Day Dreaming
Marybelle closed her eyes and took a deep breath of the of the lake air. She kept her distance from the lake, scared of what lurked underneath. She took a deep breath and slowly walked towards the water slipping her shoes off and walking into the water until it reached above her knees. There was an eerie feeling in the air that day, but she didn't seem to mind. A school of fish soon swam towards her and slowly began surrounding her. Marybelle stared at them before taking some bread that she had smuggled from the Great Hall and began feeding them. After a while, she closed her eyes and began imagining her home, and her parents she smiled for a bit getting caught up in her memories. She always had a fear of water and swimming, her mom would let her go out very rarely and she always spent her time down by the river watching the wildlife and wondering what it was like to be one of them. "HEY MOM!" she called and turned around expecting to see her mother standing behind her before she came back to reality and was again alone with multiple students now staring at her. "u-uhm" she became embarrassed before backing into the water. She screams as something trips her and her entire body gets soaked.

Day Dreaming
Amadea sat on a piece of driftwood at the edge of the lake, staring out into the vast rippling water. It was absolutely beautiful, nothing like she had ever seen before. Back home in London, the streets were crowded and life was full of hustle and bustle. Here at Hogwarts, Amadea felt so much more relaxed, despite the hectic schedule she kept to. In the distance, a flock of birds flew across the lake from one tree to another. Their caws echoed over the expanse until reaching Amadea's ears. She closed her eyes and just took everything in; the rustling of the trees, the light noise of the water, the sounds of nature. Suddenly, she heard a cry from another student and opened her eyes in time to see a body fall into the lake, completely submerged. Amadea jumped up and ran over to the spot where the girl had fallen. She leaned down and held out a hand, hoping to be of some assistance. She didn't want any deaths on her watch.
"Hi," she said to the girl who had fallen. "Do...do..you need some h-help or something? I-I'm Amadea. I-I'm a first y-ye-ar. Hufflepuff." She realized her extended hand was shaking slightly and took a deep breath to calm herself, then turned and waited expectantly for a response.

Marybelle slowly took Amadea's hand hoisting herself back up her body shivering from the change of temperature. She looked Amadea up and down, slowly assessing her. Marybelle never spoke to anyone outside her family before and was completely confused on why someone would help her, she slowly backed into the water nodding slowly to answer the girl's question. "M-My names Marybelle.... I-I'm a Ravenclaw...uhm...thank you".
She brushed her hands lightly against the water not sure how to communicate with someone new, the water rippled under her fingertips and she slowly pushed a bit of water to Amadea trying to be nice. Ive never seen someone so different from me in my life....well I mean I've never communicated with anyone different than me before she thought to herself. Marybelle looked up towards the shore and slowly too Amedea's hand trying to lead her back to the shore. "U-uhm its getting cold if we stay in here too long we could get sick....atleast I think...is that how illness works?" she asked to her confused. Marybelle's mother never taught her anything of importance, she wasn't dumb by any means just had no understanding on how the world worked, what everything was meant for. Who she was supposed to be...Who was she supposed to be?

As Marybelle took her outstretched hand, Amadea felt the cold from Marybelle's hand seep into her own. A Ravenclaw, Amadea thought to herself. Aren't they supposed to be smarter than that? She immediately felt terrible for making the assumption. She had no right to be judging Marybelle for whatever happened when she fell into the lake. Amadea didn't know anything about the poor girl, excepting of the fact that she was shivering like it was Antarctica. She looked almost as timid as Amadea felt, and Amadea felt as though she should do something about it. She took off her outer robe and held it out to the girl.
"Would you like my jacket?" she asked. "You..you look cold. And yes, I think you're right. Staying in the cold too long is not good. You might catch a cold..." Amadea trailed off, unsure of what to say next. "Though maybe there might be a spell or something that could make it better. I-I don't really know what it would be though, since I'm only a first year. Well, I guess you are too, right? I'm also a Hufflepuff. So that means I'm not as smart as you. Well, that's not necessarily true. But maybe it is. I'm not saying you're stupid." Amadea stopped talking. She always started rambling when she got too nervous. "I'm sorry," she apologized. "I don't know what to say sometimes so I just say everything."

Marybelle looked back at Amadea quietly listening to her talk. She shifted around a bit "I-I will be honest I don't know why I was put into Ravenclaw, when I lived with my parents they did not teach me a lot, I never learned simple things or socialized with others outside my own family... U-uhm I do not even know if I am making good conversation now" Marybelle looked down in shame, she didn't want others to know she was behind in basic academics she knew how to read, and spell, and other small things but did not know anything about science or math, or anything in the magical world.
"my mom said we were something called 'Purebloods' and because of that I wasnt allowed outside of my house, or allowed out when their friends were over.......all I ever had in life was Arpeggio my cat" she sighed before looking back at Amadea afraid of her judgement, maybe she will understand everything... and not make fun of me like in the books ive read, she seems nice but...what if she's faking it? Its completely possible Marybelle just smiled slowly trying to show some form of gratitude. She felt it was impossible for her to make friends, she beleived she had her chance to be normal in society ruined by her parents fear of mud bloods and half bloods

"Oh wow," Amadea exclaimed after hearing Marybelle's story. "I'm very sorry. If you're in Ravenclaw though, it's for a reason. The Sorting Hat is never wrong, right?" This was one of the many things Amadea had read about in her books before coming to Hogwarts. "And also don't worry about conversation," Amadea added, almost as an afterthought. "I've never really been good at talking to people either. Which is kind of ironic. Since I'm supposed to be a friendly Hufflepuff, you know? So who knows, maybe the Sorting Hat is wrong. Or maybe it's just trying to push us all out of our comfort zones so we become our true selves." She paused. "That's really deep, wow. Sorry." As Marybelle went on and told her about how she was a Pureblood, Amadea was struck with surprise. She hadn't pegged Marybelle as a Pureblood, mostly because she had seen how small the girl shrunk into herself when she first saw her. Usually the Purebloods were the ones who ruled the school, walking around with confidence and arrogance because their families knew so much about witchcraft and wizardry. She told Marybelle as such. "I'm wizard born," she explained. "Neither of my parents or grandparents are witches or wizards, but my great grandmother was a witch. She passed away when I was young, and didn't pass on much knowledge she had acquired about the art of witchcraft, so I don't really know that much. I guess that's why I'm here...why we're all here." She smiled at Marybelle. "Should we head inside?"

Marybelle smiled a bit a wave of calm washing over her, she quietly listened to Amadea with great interest. "My mother used to tell me how dirty and unnatural half-bloods and Muggle-borns were but I don't understand how people could have so much hate for people they didn't know; but yes... let's head inside" Marybelle got the rest of the way out of the water and started heading towards the large castle. She looked behind her at the sparkling lake, the gentle waves caressing the shore, every now and then a small piece of debris hitting the small patches of sand.
"I always went by the motto, A life without experiences isn't truly a life...I don't know if I made it up or not but... I like it" She shrugged her shoulders and smiled a bit, she wanted to fit in but knew it probably wasn't too possible. She just wanted to have friends be something, but she knew it probably wasn't gonna happen. Marybelle let out another sigh stopping in her tracks, turning around and looking at everyone who was sitting by the lake. She had never been around this many people but while this was a new experience she knew it wasn't the scariest one she would have.

"Ah I see," Amadea said. "Both of my parents were Squibs, and so were my grandparents. The most recent witch in my family's history is my great-grandmother. I don't think it's right to discriminate against those whom you don't know, but especially because it doesn't matter if you're a Pureblood or a Muggle born. You still have the same capabilities as everyone else." She followed Marybelle as she began walking back toward the castle. Behind her, she could hear waves crashing against the shore and leaves rustling in the distance. Amadea stopped with Marybelle and turned back toward the lake, looking at the glimmering water and the beautiful landscape around it. She loved it out here; she wished she could spend every minute just staring at the beautiful lake. As Marybelle spoke, her words repeated themselves in Amadea's brain: A life without experiences isn't truly a life.
"That's a great motto to live by," Amadea commented. "And it's a very true statement. What is the point of life if you're not doing anything in it...if it doesn't have any meaning is it really worth it?" These philosophical questions with no correct answer were the ones that Amadea loved to talk about. She just hoped that Marybelle felt the same way.

"The quote is what gave me the determination to come here" She smiled a bit before letting out another soft sigh. She left behind everyone to come here and she wasn't even sure if it was worth it. However, she never had the experiences that her favorite quote talked about all her experiences she missed, growing up without a proper family, without a friend. She longed to be home but it wasn't healthy and she knew that. Something about her mother's voice and her father's touch made her feel so calm, so happy. She was like a person with Stockholm syndrome wanting so much to be free, yet missed the safe confines of her home.
She started her trek back up towards the castle, thinking to herself of home, and her artwork, Arpeggio the amazing view of the forest from her basement window. Marybelle looked down at the ground and the soft tall grass that erupted from the dark dirt. She let in a deep breath as everything finally hit her at once, this is what she saw from her window and what she dreamed of in her sleep. She was finally free to go where she wanted when she wanted. Marybelle turned and looked at Amadea "Have you ever wondered what pure freedom felt like? Have you ever felt your chains fall off you and where you are now....everything seems so wrong yet so right? You aren't supposed to be somewhere yet here you are... You are living your life the way you wanted the way you planned and its all FINALLY happening?"

"That's so amazing," Amadea said. She knew what it was like to have something inspire her that much, to push her to continue on, to keep going even when things became really hard. Her great grandmother was her inspiration, her role model, and her guardian angel and Amadea was determined never to let her down.
Amadea's legs burned as she began walking up the hill toward the castle. I'm so out of shape, she thought to herself. This hill was so small and it barely took any effort to walk up. Well, here's something else that I can fix at Hogwarts. Marybelle's voice cut through her thoughts, as she asked Amadea about freedom. Amadea considered the question before finally answering.
"Yes," she answered slowly. "I have felt as though things are wrong but right at the same time. But sometimes I feel like I'm not living for myself, and I have to remind myself of that a lot." She took a deep breath. "Like I said, my great grandmother was the most recent magical person in my family. I didn't know her for very long since she died when I was little, but sometimes I feel like I'm only living to keep her memory alive, or to make her proud. Sometimes I don't do something that I wish I could do, maybe because it's not the best decision, but mostly because I know my great grandmother would disapprove. I love my great grandmother, but sometimes it feels like she's holding me back instead of setting me free."
