Once upon a time the library had been one of her favorite places in the castle. It was where she and Clifton would meet you study or she’d take in some reading while he quietly bounced a ball. It was there they would sneak in some private dances over in the one corner near the window.

Come Second Year, she did her best to avoid it like the plague but that wasn’t always possible when she was currently attending school and the school expected you to learn certain material of which you needed to locate...in the Library.

Alina did as much research as she could before she came, looking over what was written in her History of Magic textbook for some key phrases she might use to search once inside. Maybe she could hurry in and hurry out and not be reminded of last year’s past.

She came inside, seeing it all laid out exactly the same. The same few people were inside with a scattering of new curious First Years, taking in what they could from the magic filled books.

It was going somewhat well until she saw the corner window where they always sat and she quickly looked away only to find herself looking at one of Clifton’s closer friends from last year. Her eyes narrowed and she could feel her anger rising. “Oh, it’s you,” she said with a snapping tone. “Tell me, do you ever wonder if you were something other than your pathetic self that your ‘friend’ Clifton might have decided it worth coming back to school this year?” But her words weren’t truly to him although aimed at him. It was something she really had been asking herself.

Alec had been studying. He needed something to focus on this year that wasn't obsessively worrying about what other people were thinking about him or just worrying in general. And so he decided to study. He was determined to get at least E's on everything he got this year.. It wasn't perfect, but it was what he could manage in between all the other things he had going on his life.

Only just the other day he noticed his.. he wasn't sure what to call him.. but friend for a title probably works. Almost freezing to death. So that was quite an experience. I mean, it wasn't like he hadn't seen this friend all a mess to begin with. He stayed the whole summer will Alec, and there were quite a few moments where Alec had seen the boy at his worst. It wasn't a pretty sight, to say the least. But at least he was able to crack some sort of smile on his face about it. Although then again Alec wasn't a complete saint. He'd put the kid in the situation to begin with. After all, he did sort of lock the kid out of the house so.. Oops.. Yeah, umm Alec probably should've known that was a bad idea.

Alec sighed, shutting the textbook he'd been trying to focus on reading. But couldn't. His focus was limited, as it always was. It seemed he could never stay focused on anything long enough. Whether it was somebody talking or studying like he was supposed to be doing. Instead he found himself in his imagination, daydreaming. It was amazing he got any good marks in class last year with how much of that time had been spent in his mind. And not really ever listening to the professors. It may have been seen as rude. Or disrespectful. The boy wasn't sure, but he couldn't help it. One second he found himself listening and participating in class, the next moment he was in his head doing who knows what.

"-Oh, it’s you," Someone said out of the blue. Alec's head sharply turned that way and it took a few moments for him to comprehend what was going on. He blinked. Her.. he did not like her. It wasn't anything personal. But she was just scary! Clifton had tried his hardest to get Alec to warm up to Alina, trying to convince Alec in his letters. But Alec wasn't convinced. The boy started gathering his things to go find somewhere else to sit when she spoke again. "-Tell me, do you ever wonder if you were something other than your pathetic self that your 'friend' Clifton might have decided it worth coming back to school this year?" yes. "I-I'm u-um.. um.." The boy looked down at the ground as he tried to catch his stutter. He'd gotten it to stop during casual talk, but it came back every so often. It was embarrassing..

Clifton cared about Alec, ... right? You know.. At the very least he would've come back for SOATOP or Leo if he didn't absolutely have to not go. "I-I t-think.." Alec was about to go on. But he paused, frowning. Not looking down sadly at the ground like he'd done moments ago. "W-wait.. a-aren't you his girlfriend o-or now ex or w-whatever..?"[Way to put that subtly Alec] Alec asked, he knew. It just hadn't sunk in yet. That Clifton had even been with this girl to begin with.

"What's your deal..?" He asked, mustering up some sort of scattered confidence. Enough to look the girl straight in the eyes. Alec was going to die today.. He should not be doing this. He should not be engaging with her. He should've walked away when he had the chance.

"My deal is that you Gryffindors think that you're the greatest thing to happen to this school and yet you couldn't even keep a friendship close enough so that..."
but she stopped in mid sentence because just saying out loud that Clifton wasn't coming back was too difficult. She drew in a slow breath and it was rather apparent, whether she hated showing it, that there was pain in her eyes.

She could feel tears coming and no. No! She wouldn't do that now - not here, not in front of anyone. She deserved it, his words, but they were such a smack in the face. His ex. It was a term that had so many definitions, mostly being a former partner in a relationship. Ex as a prefix could also be outside of, up and a way, removal, or expression a former state. Even in Latin origin it meant 'out of.' The words stung so badly, even if they were truth.

"I um," it was her time to falter, to stutter, to stammer. She paused to stop herself from it. Did she really think engaging in a conversation with Clifton's friend that she would feel better? Did she think making him feel small would make her feel better? She was a better person than that and felt rather foolish.

"I'm uh, I'm sorry," she whispered, but still loud enough to be heard. "I'm just being stupid." It's what she did best. One only had to look at her grades for proof of that one. "I guess I saw you and it mad me think of him."

Talk about embarrassing yourself. The first encounter she had with Alec Mason was wandering around the castle, trying to get Meredith Ready to share some 'super important information' that Meredith said she had to tell her and yet she couldn't get anything out of her. Instead the girl kept deflecting by stating animal facts and trailing after mythical creatures. And now she was snapping at the boy for no apparent reason and what did she expect him to do? Of course he'd stand up for himself. He should. Clifton would have wanted him to.

"Anyway...um. I was being a jerk. He was rather fond of you, always said good things."

The greatest thing to happen to this school? This wording left Alec confused. He personally had never said such. In fact, he'd practically been cursing within his stutters when he got placed there. Although thinking about that now. It was likely because of the howler he knew was coming. "Gryffindor pride! Yay!" howlers about getting sorted into his Hogwarts house! How fun! How joyous.

Alec held back the sigh attempting to escape his throat as he looked her in the eyes still. Listening as the girl went on. Clutching his things at his side. Alec's take on the girl seemed to soften after she'd apologized, then mentioned Clifton said good things about Alec. He felt sympathetic towards her. He understood the whole getting so upset and letting things slip that you know you shouldn't say a thing. She was probably saying that to make amends, but Alec let that be. Alec was probably too soft in all honestly. This better not have been one of the reasons he was told he should've been put into hufflepuff.

And this was when Alec decided he was going to do something he had done once already with someone else. It was a childish action. But Alec thought it was helpful, nonetheless. "Let's start over. I think we may have gotten off on the wrong foot." Alec said to Alina after minutes of silence and just standing there. He held out his hand to Alina. "I'm Alec." Alec J. Mason to be exact he thought internally cringing at himself. He offered Alina a small smile. "And your name is?" He asked. Raising a brow. Alec knew he looked quite silly now. His messy brown hair all over the place, with a raised brow, and a goofy smile. Holding all his books and such at one side. His left hand out, waiting for her hand to shake his. His mind drifting even as he tried to focus on reality. Alina had gotten upset because she'd seen Alec. Out of context, the words sounded like a lot had gone down between the two and they were avoiding each other.

But it was far from the case. Alec only recently realizing that what this really just meant was he hadn't really taken the time to get to know her. He wasn't sure if Leo had either. But the two never had much of a reason. She was just Clifton's girlfriend. Well, more like Clifton's scary girlfriend. But that was beyond the point. With the odd label for eleven-year-olds pushed to the side. Alec decided it might be right to actually spend time to get to know the girl. I mean her threats were mostly empty, right? So she wasn't that scary.

She felt more foolish than ever. Here she was ranting like a lunatic in the Library at a boy for no reason at all, or at least no fault of his own. It was Clifton Troublefield she was angry at and not Alec Mason.

Still, with him starting over and introducing himself formally, it made her feel even more like a jerk. He was taking the high road and she was still there in the dirt, covered in her own verbal mud that she attempted to sling but was still too heartbroken to do so correctly.

Alina sighed and glanced down, knowing she didn't feel very good about the way she was treating the boy so yes, time to start over. She glanced up to him, her eyes meeting his. "Alina. Alina Rosier," she said as she gave a slight curtsy. It was her customary greeting but she hadn't really delivered it yet that second year of schooling. She then still saw his outstretched hand and smiled, laughing softly to herself and took it, shaking it.

"I was getting quite carried away there, wasn't I?" she said softly. "I don't really have this strong hatred for Gryffindors. It's the Ravenclaw house I'm trying to make amends with." That was another story.

Alec smiled as they made up. He'd rather not make enemies with the wrong people, anyway. Not that he had truly made any so far, and with those he had, he'd made amends. He wasn't sure if he had a vendetta against any of the houses, though. No quarrels, no nothing. "Really? Ravenclaw, huh? You'll have to tell me about that sometime." He said before letting his smile falter. "Hey um.. I'm sorry about Clifton. Never had a girlfriend or ex.." Alec paused watching her reaction, thinking he'd gone too fat at first. But eventually just going on, anyway. "Or anything, but I'm sure him not being able to come this year must've been hard. Try for the bright side, though? He might come back next year, and with a bag of plentiful stores to tell at that as well, Alina. And if he's unable, I'll ask my father for some instead." Alec said stopping before realizing this prompted an explanation. Alec rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "He's an auror. They always seem to have lots of stories to tell, he probably won't mind" He explained somehow able to offer her another smile in return. "Andddd if that doesn't work I don't have any backup plans so.." Alec said looking away but obviously finding it sort of funny, his wording, not the need for a second backup plan.
