Jane Rowle was my mother.

A sense of despair washed over Amelia and she felt instant regret for ever mentioning the family or what she knew about them. If they had gone into this conversation with the Gryffindor knowing that this was Eris’s family, she would’ve never spoken so brutally honest. ‘That’s what I get with my big, know-it-all mouth.’ She chastised herself in her head, a frown etching itself into her plump lips. This is why Amelia tried to keep to herself most of the time, for when she did speak it only seemed to bring her trouble. Looking at what she’d done to this girl, the Raven wanted to run the other way in shame and embarrassment.

The ‘was’ part of the red-head’s sentence was what kept her curiosity peeked, though, and she continued to sit there and watch the girl who seemed to go into a daze of thought. “I’m so, so sorry.” It was in a whisper this apology escaped her lips, she was unsure if she had even spoke loud enough for Eris to hear. Eris seemed to curl in on herself, a tight ball of what appeared to be despair and anger. The Lovell girl felt her pain and ached to make this stranger—though they couldn’t very well be strangers anymore—feel anything but what she was feeling at the moment. Amelia’s mother had always taught her to ride the wave of emotions out, though, and that’s what she let Eris do as she was consumed by her thoughts and emotions.

Giving her fellow student a moment, but when the tears started down her cheeks, Amelia couldn’t help but crawl a tad closer to the girl, stretching out one of her dainty hands in friendship and comfort. “Don’t apologize,” the Raven said softly, her eyes shining in understanding and empathy. “Everyone gets sad sometimes. Especially about their family.” Amelia was reminded of all the mornings she’d woken up at the beginning of the year from nightmares about her parents, either disowning her or chastising her for not doing well enough.

She could never imagine what it was like to be born in a family like the Rowle’s, though. Her parents, though strict and hard on her, would never abandon her in reality. Amelia had grown up well loved, if not spoiled, and nurtured into the good witch she believed herself to be now. “I’m sure she’s out there, somewhere.” The brunette spoke into the air more than she did to Eris, wondering very honestly where the family could be now. “Have you been trying to find your mother, then?” She wanted to help Eris, she really did. Amelia felt the two had a connection at this point, even though the terms were extremely sad.

Eris looked up slowly, exposing her blotchy face. Although she hadn't been crying long, the girl's eyes were already puffed up and there were red-splotches of color on the pale girl's face. Problems with having pale skin, it was always easier to notice when you were crying. Rubbing furiously at her already red face, Eris paused in her vigorous attempts to bring her coloration back to normal, and stared at Amelia. "I'm so so sorry." The words ran through Eris's head, as the other girl took another step closer. She was sorry. Amelia than said something about not needing to say sorry, as everyone got sad over their family but those 4 damming words kept ringing in Eris's head.

I'm so so sorry.
Her life was bad enough that some almost-stranger had to say she was sorry for Eris's family situation. Instead of a mother or father to comfort her, an almost stranger had to. That hurt the red-head's heart. Why couldn't her mother be telling this horrible information, instead of leaving Eris out on the streets to fend for herself? Why couldn't her father be holding her whilst the truth was revealed about the Rowle family , instead of Eris having to curl up in a ball to protect herself. She was sick of it. Sick of the lies, and the loneliness.

So when Amelia extended a hand in friendship and comfort, Eris took it gingerly in her own small, shaking hands and squeezed once. It wasn't a hard squeeze, more of a feeble attempt to convey gratefulness through body language. Eris's hands were shaking too hard for her to do much of anything with their clasped hands, and she had never really squeezed another person's hand. Nor had she asked for comfort before, or had anybody given it to her in years. She wearily stared at the other girl, wondering if she had assumed too much and the girl was just moving around. This was a lot to lay on one person, especially one you've just met.

Eris shook her head. The girl's assumption was far off. Eris was feeling raw already, so what was one more truth . "No. I'm trying to find the rest of my family. My mom is crazy. The whole world doesn't know who I am, but she found out I was a witch. She kicked me out, claiming I was a freak." eris's voice sounded bitter. "I just want to learn more about her. What made her crazy. Why she married a muggle?" It was more of a question. Eris wasn't even sure her father was a muggle anymore. Maybe he was the long-lost Luca Flawley. Or maybe it was just a consistence, that her father's name was Luca, and that the other lost pureblood was named Luca. Most likely that. "I just want to find any family I have out there." She said with a sad little laugh, finishing off her sentence with an imploring look at Amelia. Surely she understood what Eris was trying to say, and why she said 'was' my mother.

Amelia couldn’t relate to feeling any strong, negative emotion towards her parents. Whenever her father was strict with her, or expected more from her, the Ravenclaw only ever felt disappointed in herself. Her mother tended to be quiet like her daughter, agreeing with silent nods to whatever her father said. There was a lot of pressure on the brunette’s shoulders, though, even if her parents showed her the average amount of love for a child. If she wasn’t good enough…if one day she stopped putting in a hundred percent of her effort, how would her father react? The nightmares came often of him disowning her, kicking her from the house to fend for herself. That's probably what Eris had already experienced. A shudder ran down her spine at the thought of being in that situation.

Shaking her head to rid the thought in her mind, the first year felt Eris squeeze her hand back. Only once, but it was enough. For the first time in a long time at Hogwarts, Amelia felt like she had made a friend, and by accident. Perhaps it wasn’t such a terrible thing that she had stopped by and told the red-head what she knew about the Rowle family. Maybe she would have been the only one to give Eris clues towards her history. Being able to help someone like that gave the Lovell girl a warm, fuzzy feeling. She almost felt indebted to the girl now, though, in finding out as much as they could about her situation.

Still holding the girl's shaking hand in hers, trying to stable her, Amelia returned her weary stare with a slight tilt of her head and a warm smile. Eris seemed almost unsure about opening up so much to someone. “Stop looking at me like I’m going to run away. You’re stuck with me now.” A short giggle slipped out under her breath. She wished she could share some similar story about her family, or share something about her history, but the Ravenclaw felt like she didn't have much to complain about, or talk about. Home-life had always been mundane to her, but mundane had never been a problem to her, either.

Eris shook her head in response to Amelia’s question. Her smile drooped a little at the mention of her mother being crazy, and how she was kicked out under negative circumstances. “That’s terrible.” She spoke, voice serious, shaking her head in disbelief. How could someone be so horrible to a child? Especially a descendent of the Rowle family, who embodied magic and its culture. “Your mother must’ve been a witch, though. How could she view you that way? That’s just not right.” Falling back in the snow, lying down and staring into the clouds, Amelia contemplated. What could she do to help this girl? Finding the rest of the Rowle family would be a life-long journey, or that’s what it sounded like. A random question passed through the curious girl’s mind. “Is your dad really a muggle?" That didn't sound like something someone in the Rowle family would do, especially with their history.

Eris struggled to ground herself in reality, face bright red and puffy as she attempted to breath. The other girl's hand was the only thing grounding her to reality, and keeping the red-head from drowning in thoughts of her mother and the horrible truths about her estranged family that just came out only minutes before. Honestly, how the girl was still able to retain the ability to form coherent sentences was a feat in it's self. At the other girl's mention that they were stuck together, Eris let out a broken noise that was reminiscent of a laugh.

"I guess we are stuck together now." Eris said, in a watery voice as she started to feel her heart stop fluttering like a butterfly in her chest. The girl's comment was normal, and soothing. The fact Amelia could act like everything was normal made Eris feel a lot calmer. There was a lot of things two people could do without becoming friends, but spilling one's heart out does tend to make two people closer. Another ravenclaw friend. That would be wonderful. Even in her sadness, Eris found herself wondering why there were so many ravenclaws in the school. It just didn't add up.

It was terrible that her mother was crazy. What was even more crazy was the sympathy radiating off Amelila. Eris was so grateful that she took a minute to even hear the second question, heart soaring. She couldn't believe someone was being so nice to her. It truly felt amazing to have someone be kind to you, even if the situation was odd. Most situations in which people were nice were odd.

Was her father a muggle? Eris truly had no idea. He hadn't been around for when Eris had gotten her letter. He had always seemed in a daze of sorts. " I have no idea. He never told me, and wasn't around when I got my letter." Eris didn't mention her secret hope her father was Luca Falwey. That was too nerdy and immature for the other girl to hear about. Although Eris felt a connection with Amelia, which was an after effect of sobbing on the grass near the girl, she still didn't fully trust her with everything. Which was expected. They had just met 30 minutes ago, and Eris had just probably given Amelia a heart attack by sobbing on the grass like a little baby.

Amelia could not remember a time where she had been around another person so distraught. Perhaps it was part of her mother that was engrained in her to care for others, as Ophelia Lovell worked at St. Mungos as a healer. Her mother had taught her a sense of empathy that not many children had. The first year cared deeply for those around her, almost felt a protective sense for her fellow students. Even if she didn’t know you well, Amelia was a very kindhearted witch. She just didn’t have the social skills to open up to people quite yet.

When Eris agreed they were stuck together, the Lovell girl nodded in reassurance. How strange it was, making friends like this. She couldn’t complain, though, she’d met people under stranger circumstances. Having grown up in a wealthy circle of purebloods, there were often times where she’d be forced to hang around children she didn’t particularly like. A lot of the peers she’d met at that age agreed with their parents outdated ideals. Pureblood supremacy and the like were common and openly talked about things in those environments.

The Ravenclaw thought it was quite strange that Eris’ father hadn’t been around for the arrival of her letter, either. She supposed there were parts to this girl’s history she would never be able to comprehend, whether that be because of her age and lack of experience in that environment or because the red-head wasn’t comfortable with sharing more details with her. Her curiosity had faded about her history and started to focus on Eris as a person. There was more to her than her family, or where she’d come from, and Amelia wanted to show that to her.

Well,” The brunette spoke suddenly, straightening her posture, “I say we go do something fun.” She thought that taking Eris’s mind off of what was going on—maybe give her some time to process—would be a good idea. Thinking about the many things the girls could get up to, she remembered that they were still relative strangers, and unsure of each other's mutual interests. “I'd say we could head down to the Great Lake, but I'm not the best at swimming.” To be honest, the Raven couldn't swim at all, but that was hard to admit as of yet. "I wish I had access to the kitchens, we could bake one of my mum's old recipes down there.” Her freckled nose scrunched up a bit in thought as she debated on where they should go.

Eris had already decided she liked Amelia. She reeked of kindness, and the knowledge that most ravenclaws emulated. Although, unlike some other ravenclaws, she wasn't rude about the fact she was smart, nor did she make fun of Eris for not knowing things. The most important thing about the other girl was that she was kind. She hadn't laughed at Eris's tearful admissions or told Eris off for sharing her lifestory with a complete stranger.

It made the little-red head feel a bit better, just knowing there were good people in the world who cared deeply, even about strange girls crying near the lake about things that were better left unshared and unsaid. It wasn't in Eris's nature to follow rules, even ones set for herself. She had already predetermined before school that it wouldn't be a good idea to share about her past to other students, and here Eris was. Spilling out her guts to a random ravenclaw girl.

The more she thought about her words, the odder it seemed to Eris that she didn't know anything about her father. If he was a muggle, he would of found out some how that she was a witch. If he was a wizard, than why had her mother married him? Either way, it didn't add up. Her mother's family hated muggles, but her mother hated wizards. Just thinking about the situation made Eris's brain hurt to the point of exhaustion.

When Amelia offered to do something fun, the sadness residing in Eris's head faded away, replaced by a sense of excitement that all children felt when faced with the prospect of doing something fun. Eris had to admit she hadn't swam in ages. She lived in London, and most of he days were spent at Hyde Park, in the Princess Diana Memorial Park. Of course, this was without her mothers knowledge, after being kicked out onto the streets. One had to do something when alone in London, and for 10 year old Eris, that had been to play on the pirate ship in that park.

Eris also wished they could go down into the kitchens and bake, but that was the house elf's domain and, to the extent of Eris's knowledge, nobody but the house elves had ever been in the kitchens. Maybe they had. Eris had no idea.

Shrugging, Eris let herself smile. Not a weak smile, but a true smile of an excited child, ready to have some fun. "I haven't been swimming in a while. Although, I'm slightly worried that we'll drown in our robes or get eaten by the squid." Eris had the pleasure of meeting the squid once before, and nearly peed her pants in the process. Pushing herself up to her knees Eris's smile turned into a grin. "We could really do anything. The castle is huge."

Although Amelia knew that being a good person should just be a given thing, she had not quite understood that not everyone was like her. There were few encounters with other students that she had that were ever negative situations. Certain peers avoided her, of course. Some whispered things unintelligible behind her back, but it was nothing that ever truly bothered her. If the Ravenclaw let these things get to her, she would be weak. Someone her father wouldn't be proud of. It was a very good thing, then, that Amelia was naturally sweet to everyone, but you could also chalk that up as being naive.

When Eris appeared to be just as excited as she was at the prospect of doing something fun, it gave the first year a warm feeling. Her smile grew ever larger, threatening to show her pearly whites. The ideas they’d had so far had been flops, though, as the Lovell girl nodded in agreement as to why they couldn't access the kitchens or go swimming in their winter attire. Putting a thoughtful finger to her chin, Amelia tried to think of other ideas. What did she do for fun? Most of the time she was off by herself, lost in her own daydreams, wandering the castle.

The castle is absolutely gigantic.” Her dark gaze fell upon the castle to her back as she looked over her shoulder. ‘The beauty of it would never get old…’ Turning back to her newfound friend, Amelia spoke, “We could always go do a bit of exploring. I heard there's a Trophy Room I've yet to see with old, important plaques and such.” Trying to think of some more options, the eleven year old laughed at her train of thought and shared it with the Gryffindor, “Not to sound stereotypical or anything, but I just read and write for fun, most of the time.” A small bit of laughter followed the statement. “I do love a good practice session on a broom, though...or some dueling.” The brunette wasn't too confident in the latter, but she was running out of ideas at this point.

The kindness of the other girl was heart-warming, but the excitement of finding something to do was even more important. Eris wasn't able to feel her emotions of sadness and confusion for a long while, once the prospect of doing something fun was put out into the air. Honestly, there was nothing more that the 11 year old girl liked in the world than goofing around and finding things to do that weren't adult like and stupidly boring. Although her ideas of what was boring were quite vauge. It was part of her world, her life, to play and to live in her imagination . Playing at the park had been the only thing she had loved about her pre-hogwarts life, and the sense of happiness being something she held close to her heart, even though there were things much more pleasant than playing at the park at the school.

Amelia was right. The castle was huge. The vast Scottish castle was more amazing than any playground with it's hidden rooms, moving paintings, endless secrets, and moving stair ways. Anything you thought of was in the school just waiting to be discovered by the thralls of students walking through it's gigantic doors.

Eris's eyes lit up at the idea of exploring. There was never enough of the school to explore. Every nook and cranny led to another room, another hidden passage. Honestly, Eris loved and hated the strangeness of the school. There was always room to explore, always new places to find, but sometimes Eris just wanted to find places when she wanted too. Sometimes exploration wasn't fun. Neither was getting lost. Other times it was an adventure. Hopefully her and Amelia would have an adventure! Amelia also loved to read. That was also nice! And brooms, and dueling! Everything Amelia had suggested was lovely!

"Exploring is always sooo fun! So is reading, and flying. I've never dueled, but I bet it's fun too!"
