A carriage that pulls itself
Private roleplay with @Alina RosierBriar Fox was nervous.
She was trying not to show it, that at least Lucia could tell, but she didn't seem too sure of herself as she stepped off the train. Lucia followed right after her, and caught her by the arm.
"Come over here," she said, and steered her sister to the opposite end of the platform before giving her a hug.
"Lucy!" Briar protested, but Lucia was feeling even more nervous for her sister than Briar was for herself, and tried to give them both confidence through the hug.
"Oh, alright." The newly second-year stepped back and drank in a long look at her sister, who was fidgiting. "Go on then."
Briar was already turning to join the tide of firsties, but turned back to wave. "See you at the feast," she said, voice shaking slightly, then disappeared onto a boat.
Lucia sighed as she watched her go - sometimes she acted like a second mother towards her sisters, sometimes like a twin to Briar, and sometimes just the eldest sister. This was definitely one of the 'second mother' occasions.
Tearing herself away, she walked towards the carriages with a bounce in her step, singing what she remembered of the old Hogwarts school song to a light and happy tune. The song had not been sung last year, and she could only assume that it would not be this year, but her mother had sung it to her often and the girl managed to remember most of it.
"Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy hoggy Hogwarts, teach us something please!"
Lucia stopped in front of the carriages, inspecting them to try find either an empty one or one with some friends on it.
"Whether we be old and bald, or young with scabby knees."
She climbed onto an empty carriage and paused.
"Our heads could do with filling - with some interesting stuff!"
She sat down on one of the seats near the end, warily giving the front of the carriage a glance. She couldn't see the Thestrals, thank Merlin, but they still creeped her out.
"For now they're bare, and full of hair, dead flies and bits of fluff. Lumos!"
Taking her wand out from the pocket of her cloak, Lucia cast the wand-lighting charm. It was getting dark, and she had to stifle a yawn.
"What's next again...?" she muttered to herself.

"Hmm?" Alina asked, glancing over to her fellow Hufflepuff and realized that she had totally been lost in thought. She hadn't heard any of the first four lines of the song that the girl had been singing and was totally oblivious to the fact that she had been singing at all.
"Sorry," she apologized, not wanting to seem rude for not even welcoming the girl to the carriage. "Welcome back, Lucia. Excited for Second Year?"
For her, there had been comfort in Second Year. She didn't have to be nervous over the Sorting Ceremony like the year before when all eyes were on her. Then she didn't have to have the embarrassment that she felt when the hat chose Hufflepuff and she insulted a fourth of the school's population aloud with words that were quite cruel and ostracized herself for the first few weeks. She didn't have to wonder what classes would be like, professors would be like, or homework would be like. She knew what to expect for assignments and tests. She knew, more or less, where to go in the castle.
She had made friends and acquaintances.
And yet there was also a lot of sadness for Second Year. She was leaving behind her twin sister who decided to transfer to Beauxbatons. She was leaving behind Clifton who wasn't returning to Hogwarts. She had built a stronger relationship with her father and finally felt like she had a parent for once - only to have it crumble into nothing overnight during the Summer.
Come that entry into Second Year, she really wasn't sure how to feel.
Let your confidence shine, pretty girl.

Interacting=with=@Alina Rosier"Oh, hey Alina!" Lucia grinned to her friend. The fellow Hufflepuff Second-Year had been a friend of Lucia's since the start of the year, and Lucia was pleased to see her now. The carriage began to move, and the part-veela subconciously gripped the wooden board against her back, wincing as they jolted over a rock.
Wait, sorry for what?
"Yeah, thanks, you?" Lucia replied enthusiastically. "It's gonna be great. Plus Briar - you remember Briar - she's in first year now. Can't wait for her Sorting."
It was true - the girl was way more excited for her sister's Sorting than she had been for her own. At least, this time, there wouldn't be as much stress as there had been for Lucia last year.
"Ebony's made me a list of things I'm supposed to do though," she added with a roll of her eyes. "Can't remember most of it, but it's basically 'Go get more friends, Lucia, join at least three clubs Lucia-'"
The Lucia in question broke off with a sigh. "I think she just wants me to socialise more. Yay." The last word - yay - was definitelly sarcastic, and Lucia was almost proud of herself for using sarcasm so fluently.

"Psh, get more friends..." she muttered. "You've already got me, isn't that enough? I mean, quality over quantity and you've got the absolute best," she smiled, not really actually full of herself just trying to play around.
The joining clubs thing was probably good advice though. Alina was ready to outcast the world after Clifton walked out on her life. She had trusted him with so much of her heart and her mind and her future and her present. This wasn't right and maybe clubs would help her take her mind off her troubles.
"Which do you think would be better..." she paused, "Ebony telling you how to do everything like she does," she spoke her first name like Lucia always did, "or Ebony completely ignoring you?" She could see it both ways. But right now, Alina was coming into her Second Year once again with a father who was completely ignoring her, not there physically or even be able to be reached by letter. It was heartbreaking, especially after the bonding they shared over the summer.
But she also had that complete oversight of an adult trying to mold her into something from her grandmother before she was outcasted from the home that same Summer. It was torture as well, especially when that person would never truly be pleased.

Interacting with @Alina RosierLucia chuckled at her friend's statement."Exactly!" she said, pointing at Alina as if the girl had made a miraculous discovery. "But I can't really argue. She has a point, I made a bunch of friendships in First Year and stuck with that. Should probably branch out more," the Hufflepuff admitted.
Still, though - Ebony wasn't really one to talk. Lucia was pretty certain that her mother had had even fewer friends than Lucia herself did during her time at Hogwarts. Likely, your twin's death did that to you - made you unwilling to enter into social life. Sometimes, Lucia wondered if her mother had retreated so much because she was scared of going the same way as young River Fox did, and leaving even more broken hearts.
Huh. Lucia took a moment to consider the question, fiddling with her robe's left sleeve as she did so and trying to feel the embroidered Fox crest beneath the fabric. "Probably... Probably telling me what to do," she admitted. "If she ignored me, I'd just feel like she didn't care. I mean, I don't know whether she's just trying to forge new family connections or actually wants me to make friends, but I'd rather think it was the last one."

If she ignored her, it would be as if she didn't care. Alina thought about the words Lucia just said of her mother. Alina knew this all too well towards the end of this past Summer with her father. Yeah, probably nitpicking would be best because at least that meant something. She had that last year with constant owls about her grades and whatnot. She didn't know if she'd get that this year. She hadn't communicated with her father in going on a month now.
She was twelve years old and felt more alone than she ever had before. Her twin sister was now at Beauxbatons for the rest of her schooling and the only ones that attempted to see her off were the house staff.
"I'm kinda just looking forward to Second Year coming and going," she said truthfully. Something about all the classwork that was ahead of them just seemed overwhelming and she was afraid to get too cozy in the castle that she loved because she knew come Summer it would vanish as a reality for her for three more long agonizing months, only to do this all over again, year after year until graduation.
Alina waited as some more students came to find their way onto a carriage so that soon they could be off on their way down the path towards the castle.
Let your confidence shine, pretty girl.
