It was Molly’s first potions lesson and it had been one that she had been dreading. Despite reading through some of Magical Drafts and Potions she had been struggling to get her head around how exactly potions worked. She hoped that some actual hands on experience would help to shed some light on the subject.

After a brief introduction to potions from the professor the class was instructed to brew a cure for boils. Molly flipped her potions book to the correct page and looked at the ingredients list and the instructions. Feeling nervous she glanced around at the room. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw first years had been combined for their potions class and she was sharing a table with a Ravenclaw girl that she didn’t know.

Molly took a deep breath and pulled her ingredients closer to her. ”First step, add 6 snake fangs to your mortar” she mumbled to herself reading the instructions she carefully counted out the needed ingredient and ground them to fine powder using the mortar as the book stipulated.
Next Molly measures to the cauldron and heated the mixture at the correct temperature for 10 seconds. After waving her wand the instructions stated that the potion needed to be left to brew. Whilst waiting Molly read through the instructions again, her nerves seemed to be settling slightly and she looked up at the girl opposite her on the table, she offered a tentative smile before looking at her potion.

As her eyes settled on the potion in the bottom of her cauldron Molly’s heart jumped into her chest and the colour drained from her face. The potion seemed to be bubbling violently and the book did not say that this was meant to happen. ”No no no no….” she said stirring the potion. She was completely lost and didn’t know how she had gone wrong or how she could fix it. ”It’s not supposed to be doing this” she said panic rising. Grabbing the end of her plaited pig tail she stuck it in her mouth and began chewing as she reviewed the potions book again.

Rereading the instructions her jaw dropped as she realised what she had done wrong, the book said to add 4 measures of the crushed fangs to the cauldron, she had added all of it. Molly didn’t know if her potion was salvageable but at this point she was happy to accept a fail for this lesson as long as she didn’t cause the whole potions class to explode or something similar. ”How could I be so stupid” Molly scolded herself as she frantically started looking for a way to correct the mistake.

Riley had been nervously awaiting Potions class. It sounded fun to her, but also quite terrifying. She looked around the room, examining the students. She listened as the teacher introduced the class and opened her book, flipping to the page for instructions on how to brew a cure for boils. Well, that sounded great. She looked over at the Hufflepuff girl she was sharing a table with and noticed she had already started brewing her potion.
The first step was to add 6 snake fangs to her mortar. She pulled 6 out and added them in, grinding them to a fine powder, and added four measures of it into the cauldron, double-checking both the instructions and her measuring tool to make sure she was doing everything correctly. She waved her wand and left the potion to brew. She glanced over at the girl, who was smiling tentatively at her. She smiled back. She kept watching as the potion bubbled violently, and the colour drained from the girl's face
” No no no no….” Riley heard the girl say ” It’s not supposed to be doing this” Riley watched as the girl grabbed a pigtail and chewed on it.
Riley stirred her potion a little bit before getting closer to the girl. "How could I be so stupid"
"Now that's not true. This is just your first class, you're bound to make mistakes." She said calmly. She finished up her potion and poured it into the sample vile, before handing it to the girl
"Take this and pretend it's yours. I'll take yours, I don't mind the fail." Riley smiled kindly at the girl.

Molly really wanted to hide under the desk or even better still wake up in her bed in the Hufflepuff dormitory and discover this whole thing was actually a nightmare. She noticed that her table companion was looking at her almost like she was about to have a meltdown which wasn’t too far of the truth. As Molly peered into the cauldron she felt the Ravenclaw girl move closer to her. Was she going to laugh at Molly’s mistake or call the professor over and embarrass her, she mentally prepared herself for either scenarios.

What she didn’t anticipate was the suggestion that she cheat. Molly was far too honest to ever take credit for someone else’s work. It was unfair and completely against her nature. She was sue the other girl was just trying to be kind but the suggestion caused a feeling in her stomach that felt like someone had dropped a heavy stone. Molly shook her head vigorously ”I can’t do that, it’s cheating” she said pushing the potion back towards the girl and looking over her shoulder worried that the professor was watching and that she would loose points from Hufflepuff.

”I don’t mind a poor grade” Molly said realising that the other girl had mistook her distress for grade pride. That was not the case at all, she was angry with herself for not reading the instructions carefully enough but she would accept whatever grade she was given. Molly was more worried that the potion would explode or something more disastrous. Being nervous about potions and not having a clear understanding of the subject was just making her feel worse.

”I….” she stumbled over her words for a moment. ”Thank you for the offer but I can’t cheat, I… I’m just worried that this potion is going to do some real damage.” Molly looked down at her cauldron the bubbling was becoming more and more violent. ”I’ve never seen anything bubble like this before. Do you think we could fix it? You seem good at potions.” her last words were an assumption but also more of a hope that this lesson could be salvaged. ”I’m Molly by the way..” she introduced herself as an after thought.

"I don't know. what did you mess up on? And sorry, I didn't really think about that. You don't have to cheat, I'll try to see if I can help you." She watched the bubbling potion. Riley was surprised hers hadn't ended up like that, considering she's a muggle-born. She knew nothing about magic, but so far what she'd figured out is that it's all about paying attention and making sure you're doing the exact thing that you were told. She glanced at her own potion, it looked like she would at least get an A. She looked down at the book, examining the recipe. It said nothing about what to do if the potion started to bubble violently. Well, that wasn't good. She looked around at the class, trying to see if anyone else was having a similar problem. One girl was stirring hers violently, but nobody else's was bubbling.
"I'm Riley. And I'm not good at potions. Beginners luck I guess."She chuckled. That was what it was, pure luck that her's was as good as it was. She did feel bad for suggesting to cheat, she hadn't really thought about it, she was just trying to help out.
