General The Ravenclaw Table 2020 -2021

I stumble uncomfortably onto the bench my face going bright red. Knowing I gad just made quite the spectale of myself but since I was absolutely horrible at talking to people I don't say anything and try to pretend that didn't jusr happen. I lean over my plate trying to hide my face, feeling slightly better seeing the delicous array of food splayed out on the wooden table infront of me. when another girl, a first year who had just been sorted, walked up to me. She was tall and lanky, with dark skin and curly hair. She said sown on the other side of me.
"That fall didn't look fun. You ok?" She asks.
"Yeah, um, I-I'm fine." I say attempting to give her a smile and msking myself make eye contact instead of staring at the tablecloth.
Then realizing it was probably rude not to introduce myself I did so hurriedly.
"I-I'm Violet. Violet Tyler." I say, holdong out my hand because that seems appropriate. "And who are you?" I ask the girl trying to make my voice sound louder and more confident, not as sqeaky and shy as it usally did. I'm terrible at talking to people and always get anxiety.

Ellen offered a smile; she noted the way the girl’s face had turned red when she sat down. The best thing to do, in her mind, was to help her get over it. As if it never even happened. The smile was hopefully there to help her get over it and that it was no big deal. People stumbled; she knew she stumbled often enough, and the last thing she wanted to do was make another fresh face feel unwelcome.

Still, she couldn’t imagine something like that happening to her. Stumbling in front of everyone. She knew most of everyone was either focused on their own conversations or on their food to give the girl much notice, but a fall like that would draw eyes. And people would talk. She felt sorry, but also in an attempt to get her to feel more comfortable, she drew closer to her, as a way of solidarity almost.

“Hi Violet,” she answered, taking her hand. “I’m Ellen Thomas. I’m new here… but you probably already knew that.” She was just glad that she didn’t have to eat alone, surrounded by students and people she didn’t know.

“I’m from West London,” she offered as she began looking at the table and the wild assortment of food. Chicken, both fried and spitted, large platters of pasta with either red sauce or made with parmesan, mashed potatoes adjacent to several sauce boats of white and brown gravy. Ellen began picking out the pieces of food and placing them on her plate as she continued to talk. “I never really imagined I’d ever come to Hogwarts, which is kind of funny since my parents came here. And my mother was from here as well and…” she stopped. “Sorry, I’m rambling.”

Miranda watched the Sorting with mild interest, cheering loudly with all the rest whenever a new student got put in Ravenclaw. She also cheered when one student got placed into Gryffindor, which while it might have sounded like a mistake, wasn't actually. The newly-placed lion was Cedar, her younger brother. While many might be disappointed to have the separation between houses with their siblings, Miranda didn't mind. She'd known for years that her brother was destined for the house of the brave and the daring. Just like it had been obvious she would be placed in the house of wit and cunning.

Taking a break from watching the line of students up in the front, she glanced around the table, fidgeting slightly in her seat. Most of the faces were familiar, with the exception of the new Ravenclaws. She remembered the previous year, when she'd been one of the excited first years, her eyes most likely as round as the plates set out before them as she struggled to take everything in at once. By now, the general magical aura of the Great Hall had lost its initial glamour, but she had to admit, the myriad of floating candles reflecting off of the ever-changing ceiling still looked, well, magical.

OOC Note: Heather has been held back a year, so that's why she is already sorted into Ravenclaw!
Heather didn't understand what was happening.

No, no, she wasn't that airheaded. The girl knew what was going on around her- she could see children getting sorted, hear people cheering and, overall, know that everyone was having fun. But, even though she noticed all these things, it felt like she was viewing everything from outside; as if she was the audience who watched a movie- a movie which didn't ever seem to end.

Simply put, Heather didn't understand what was going on with her.

It was so easy to put an act though; clapping and cheering as yet another child got sorted, the blonde smiled as she saw a young girl approach the eagles' table, and struck a conversation with her, hoping to shake off the strange mood she had.

"You'll love being a Ravenclaw," Heather said, trying to sound enthusiastic. "Just wait until you see the Common Room!"

Their conversation quickly became dry, as the kid was awfully shy; Heather sensed that she needed some time alone to understand what was going on around, so she let her observe everything in silence. She could relate to her, after all; Last year, the blonde had been in the same position: sitting on that stool, getting sorted into Ravenclaw and, essentially, having her future decided by a hat. Ugh, she forgot about it, but now the memories of her ceremony came back.

It wasn't that Heather hated where she got sorted, but more like hated the Sorting Hat itself. Well, not really hate- that was a big word, and the girl had a policy against it. But she certainly disliked it; so much, actually, that if she had the opportunity, she would probably cut it and sew something else from that material.

It was so old and dirty and smelly- and yet it acted like it was Hogwarts' most-prized possession! What irked Heather the most about it, though, was the tone it used when the girl got sorted; a piece of clothing acted as if it knew what she was feeling- the nerve of it! And, of course, that mention of her dad wasn't necessary, and neither was that 'piece of advice' that Heather remembered it even now word by word: You are an old soul, who forgot how to truly enjoy the small things in life. Who does say things like that? And, of course, the statement was false too- Heather loved her life! She was only going through a rough phase now...

Last year, the girl had been so close to being sorted into Gryffindor, and fulfilling her late father's dream- but a cranky hat had to destroy everything. Well, that turned out as a good thing, since Heather liked being a Ravenclaw, but even now, her eyes wandered every few seconds towards the table of the daring; and she wondered what was like being one of them. Would she make a good Gryffindor? She hoped so, as she wasn't a great Ravenclaw. Yeah, Heather had good grades, but she got in so much trouble- she lost almost every point she won last year, and this time wasn't really going to be different. 'Cause now, thanks to her new friend called insomnia, the girl had to find a cure for boredom, and what was better than some late-night walks?

With these subjects occupying her mind, Heather finally felt herself getting distracted from her initial worry; that being said, with an easier heart, she let her eyes skim over the table, trying to read the newcomers' feelings.

Mei was nervous as she sat down to be sorted into her house. That hat was taking longer for her than it did for all the other students. She looked down her hands bunching up her robes. She could feel everyone's eyes on her. She looked down and thought "What if I don't belong here? What if I'm a mistake?". Then all of a sudden before Mei could shed a single tear the hat shouted "RAVENCLAW!" Mei was so surprised that she almost fell out of the chair she was sitting in. A wide smile spread on Mei's face as she happily walked over to the Ravenclaw table. But seeing all the faces looking at her the smile on her face slowly disappeared. She was scared again. She walked down to the end of the table and sat there by herself. She had no idea how to strike up a conversation with someone. There were so many people she didn't know. She started to think " What if they don't like me? Then I'll never fit in." Mei looked down as a tear escaped from her eye and dropped to the table. She was bunching up her robes again. Before she knew it she was crying softly. Her teardrops silently hit the table creating a small pool of water. She sat there. Not looking up at anybody. This was not how she wanted to start her first year at Hogwarts.

Ensley stood in the back of the first years waiting to be sorted. Her brothers had told her different tales of how students were sorted but as she stood here and watched as a hat was place on your head she was revived. “Ensley Rivera.” Said the Professor. Ensley shook out her hands as a way to lessen the nerves as she made her way to the stool. The hat was placed on her head as soon as she sat down. Her hands shook so she gripped her robes to keep people from noticing. “Hmm, an interesting one we have here.” Said the hat. Ensley raised her eyes to look up at it as pondered where to put her. Her brothers has been sorted into Gryffindor just like her parents. Would she follow suit? “Smart, cunning and very clever. Ahh but also brave when you need to be. Where shall I put you?” the hat said. “I do believe you will make and excellent t student for… Ravenclaw” it proclaimed. Ensley stood and slowly made her way to her house table. She was shocked. She wondered what her parents would say when they found out. Not sure where to sit she made her way to the end of the table and sat down. As much as she wanted to be with her siblings she was deep down excited for the new adventure this would bring. She just hoped she could make new friends.

First day back to school and here he was sitting at the Ravenclaw table quietly. Oh the memories it brought him of last year!

The exciting euphoria that came with new beginnings was plain as day among the new faces of the Ravenclaw students. The baby birds trickled in one by one as the sorting hat had finished calling out their house, eventually joining the flock of like minded geniuses.

Sylvain knew just as well as the other students he'd gotten acquainted with in the year past, that the sorting hat was not a very fair judge. It placed children in whatever house seemed to call to them, or they called to it. He remembered how quickly the hat had labeled him a Ravenclaw, shouting out the house before it had even touched his head. In an instant, he was seen as fit to soar with the eagles.

Dressed in his school robes, immaculate to set a good impression for the first years, Sylvain sat his satchel beside himself and watched contentedly as students rose from their seats. Putting his hand on his stomach, Sylvain felt the grumble of hunger steadily disturb his gut's tranquility. Producing a pair of chocolate frogs from his pack, Sylvain opened his to reveal b72. Just like that, he'd collected all the bronze cards from 70-79. Looking to one of the first year students across the table from him, her puddle of tears concerning him, he asked if they wanted to share his candy.

"Welcome to Ravenclaw, let me be the first to greet you with a present!"

He slid the chocolate frog, box and all across the table to them.

"You can call me Sylvain. This is my second year at Hogwarts. What's your name?"

Mei looked up to see a boy who looked maybe a year or two older than her took the seat across from her at the end of the table. The boy put his hand to his stomach as it grumbled. He reached into his satchel that he sat next to him and pulled out a pair of chocolate frogs. He looked over at Mei and she quickly looked away from his gaze. She was new and didn't want him to see her crying. But it seemed as if he was more concerned about her crying and offered to share his candy. "Welcome to Ravenclaw, let me be the first to greet you with a present!" He slid the chocolate frog, box and all across the table to Mei. Mei was surprised and didn't bother to hide her emotions. Mei wiped her tears away with her fingers and used the cuff of her sleeve of her robes to dry her tears off the table. She accepted the chocolate frog. "You can call me Sylvain. This is my second year at Hogwarts. What's your name?" So the boy was older than her and his name was Sylvain. She smiled at him softly. "Thank you. My name is Mei. It's nice to meet you Sylvain." She moved her hair out of her face and put it behind her ear and removed strands of hair that were sticking to her lips.

Watching quietly as Mei wiped the tears from her face, and then the table, Sylvain grew more curious as to what bothered her. If she was anything like himself at the start of last year, she was probably feeling impatient and ready to start making friends. Both feelings had gotten him into a whirlwind of drama and trouble, but he ultimately regretted very little of it. "Nice to meet you Mei, I hope you're excited for all the adventures we're about to go on."

Eyeing the still unopened box in her possession, Sylvain couldn't help but get a tad impatient. Desperately, he needed to know what card she'd gotten and there was no better way to oust uncertainty than to take action yourself. "Well, don't be afraid. Go ahead and open it." Sylvain said, as a warm kindness found its way into his eyes. "Though do be careful, they have at least one good jump, so if you aren't prepared it will try to get away from you and...." the wistful lad's voice trailed as he remembered summer camp and how the chocolate frogs he'd hoarded in his tent managed to escape the confines of his cocoa containment system.

"Well, let's not plan for failure right? We're too smart for that."

Sylvain watched quietly as she wiped her tears. When she finished she looked up at him when he said"Nice to meet you Mei, I hope you're excited for all the adventures we're about to go on." However he was still eyeing the still unopened chocolate frog box in her hand. "Well, don't be afraid. Go ahead and open it." Sylvain said. His eyes looked warm and kind. He then added "Though do be careful, they have at least one good jump, so if you aren't prepared it will try to get away from you and...." As he paused he voice trailed off as if he were remembering something. After a few moments he said "Well, let's not plan for failure right? We're too smart for that." Mei nodded as her smile grew bigger and brighter than ever. "Yes. I agree." Mei looked at him once more and then at the frog box he had given her. Mei was hesitant. She had never opened one of these before. Mei slowly opened the box and was surprised when the frog actually jumped out of the box and onto the table. Mei was surprised and had a look of bewilderment in her eyes and let out a small gasp. Mei quickly tried to grab the frog but missed the first time. She caught the frog right as it was about to jump onto a student's plate that was sitting near her. She laughed at herself. " I should've paid more attention and had my hand over the box." Her hair escaped from behind her ear and had fallen in front of her face.
