It was the start of term feast, all the new pupils were sorted and Jo was terrified to make eye contact. She was sorted in Slytherin. A muggle-born... In Slytherin, she had heard about their reputations of being not so nice to Muggle-borns or as to how they refer to them "Mudbloods" she thought that she might escape the name-calling when she entered the magic world, She was now second-guessing it.

She sighed and looked at who was sitting next to her, she had short red hair And compared to Jo (who is of average height) the girl was small enough to be mistaken for a 9-year-old but she must be 11 and Jo knew that. She was looking forward to talking to her Friend Charles after dinner who was also sorted into Slytherin.

"Hi.." she said her voice trembling a bit, why was she all of the sudden nervous? Must be the adrenalin from being sorted into Slytherin. The magic feast was about to begin by the clatter and chatter of everybody in the Great hall. She had never thought that There were so many witches and wizards in the Small country of England, I mean she saw what she thought was most of the magical population at Diagon Alley, but by the looks of it, she was proven wrong again.

Amelia was shocked to get sorted into Slytherin. Everyone from the girls in the Hogwarts Express to the professor that showed her around Diagon Ally seemed have disdain for Slytherin. There was apparently a wizard so evil from that house, that she only heard people call him You-know-who, despite Amelia not knowing anything about him. Did the hat think Amelia was going to turn out evil? Amelia didn’t think she was evil, but could she really argue with an all-knowing, magical hat?

Amelia walked down and sat at the Slytherin table. She was not used to the school robes, yet, so she had some difficulty getting in her seat, and the robes were still askew. The girl sitting next to her didn’t look evil, at least. She had red hair like, Amelia, and was a few inches taller. The way she said Hi, made Amelia think she might even be more nervous than her. Amelia put on a brave face, and tried to seem as confident as possible, despite her nerves.

Hi, I’m Amelia McCarthy. It is nice to meet you,” she said confidently and friendly. Then she looked around and whispered to the girl, “Hey, I don’t know much about Hogwarts, but I heard that Slytherin is the bad house. Do you know if that is true?

"That's what I heard." Jo said nervously. "I heard they don't like people like me... you know muggle-borns or something..? I think I mispronounced it" she said nervously. She at least had met some people on the Hogwarts express who got sorted into Slytherin that was nothing closer to evil then humanity was to building a space ship and sending a man to the edge of the world in seconds from when those words left her mouth.

At least the girl shared the same first impression of the Slytherin house as her. Without knowing it Jo and the girl's minds ran at the same pace, jumping from was the hat wrong, to will I become evil someday? The thought of this Made Jo fiddle with her hands and start to shake a bit. The others were still getting sorted, she just wanted it all to be a dream, but she knew she wasn't creative enough at the moment to make up the girl sitting next to her or to sort her friends and classify them as potentially evil.

"What's your name?" Jo asked trying to get her mind off the sorting. She just wanted to leave the great hall already, without the feast everybody was talking about, she just wanted to leave and curl up in her bed and fall asleep, and wake back up in her muggle home knowing that it was a dream.

So Slytherin’s do not like muggle-borns. Amelia wasn’t sure if she counted as a muggle-born. Her mother was certainly a muggle, but her dad might not have been. Her mom always told stories about her father that seemed unbelievable, so it seemed likely that he was a wizard. Amelia decided that if Slytherin’s didn’t like muggle-borns, she would have to convince others that her dad must have been a wizard. That way Amelia wouldn’t be a muggle-born.

This girl that she was talking to seemed to say that she was a muggle-born. Hopefully the other Slytherin’s wouldn’t pick on her for being a muggle-born. Amelia hated people that would pick on someone just because of who their parents were. Though this girl was taller than Amelia, she seemed more nervous, and could use some help.

The girl didn’t seem to catch Amelia’s name in the loud great hall, so she repeated herself more loudly. “I’m Amelia McCarthy.” Amelia then whispered in her ear so the other Slytherin’s wouldn’t hear her. “I don’t care one bit if you are muggle-born, and I don’t care if the other houses think we’re evil. Who your parents are and what a stupid hats says, shouldn’t matter at all. I was raised by muggles myself, so if any Slytherin are mean to you because your parents are muggles, I’ll beat them up the muggle way!” She then returned to her normal, friendly voice. “What’s your name?”
