To Find a Man
It was one of the first days of the new semester. Erin had spent her summer with Thomas and Howard, so the summer was misery. She found Howard almost tolerable, Thomas on the other hand was petulant on a good day and intolerable on every other. Home was better, quiet and sterile. She had time to think about the past several months. She ate better, trained harder. She could trust the food and sleep in a bed, so that was progress at the very least but the entire time she was there she remembered that she would have to eventually return to this place. Allegedly a school, but it felt more like a trial to survive. This thread is intended for @Kyle DeRook. While others are welcome top enter, they need to acquire permission from Kyle prior to entry.
Erin stood out for a lot of reasons. The part-Veela's purple tresses being one of them. The other being her reputation, one admittedly earned over the past three years. She solved most of her problems with violence rather than diplomacy or wit. This was a new year and she was going to solve issues smarter but still with her fists.
Her first stop was the Abandoned Bathrooms, the most romantic place in the school. Well, the most private. No, not really. It was the most honest space. She liked the abandoned baths for three reasons. First, there was no pomp and circumstance. The bathroom was what it was. There were no efforts to hide the imperfections. No effort to make the space something it was not. It was a truth. Second, she liked the sorts of people it attracted. The introverts and the emo wannabes mostly. They just cried in their stalls or thought they were being a bad ass by being someplace that was less nice than the rest of the castle. However, there was a gem in the rough that frequented here. The infamous Kyle DeRook. The third and final reason she had come here she was looking and she was waiting for him.
Kyle DeRook, an emotional and physical third year. She did not know him well but she remembered him from the quidditch pitch. She remembered him from a flier -- a bully for hire. Not meek. Not weak. Honest, unlike Jack. Fearless unlike Paracelsus. Exactly what she wanted. Exactly what she needed.
When Kyle entered, she would wait there all day if necessary, he would find her waiting on one of the wall mounted sinks with her hands folded on her lap. A half smile on her face, "DeRook I have been waiting for you."

To Find a Man
Kyle had spent the time between his second and third year at home. He spent his time alone more than anything. He was training, getting stronger. When he wasn't jogging or doing push ups or sit ups he had a couple pillows tied to a tree he punched as a sort of punching bag type set up. He enjoyed the feeling of getting stronger, he could see the changes in his body. While he was still lean he was getting muscles and they were more noticeable every day. Granted with his leather jacket he normally wore other than his frame there was little to see. Another reason he did this was it quieted the beast inside of him. He didnt notice it clawing as much inside and he was more calm and relaxed while working out and training. And it seemed the stronger he got, the stronger the beast was during the nights where he turned. He even managed to rip the chains out of the wall once before they were reinforced. If he was going to be a monster, he was going to be the biggest and baddest one anyone has ever seen.
Coming back to school however...that was a drag. He hated everyone, got into fights all the time and spent more time in detention than he did studying. Not that he really studied much anyway. If anything the detention gave him isolation which is something he valued more than ever. Being around other people just made him angry, made him want to lash out and make people regret crossing his path or looking at him wrong. He used to just target weak, or scared or pathetic students but that got boring. he wanted more of a challenge. On a whim, he made a couple of flyers with the words
Today, he was making his way towards the abandoned toilets. While he sometimes ran into people in there that deserved a good ass kicking he normally was able to enjoy the silence and solitude. he enjoyed how it was broken down and a wreck. It's issues were out in the open, nothing being hidden or covered up. Just like the scar he wore on his face. he was wearing his uniform pants, wrinkled and frayed in a few places. his button up was untucked with his sleeves rolled up and his tie loose. his messy hair was getting longer, almost shoulder length and it was clear he didnt really care how it fell. the most noticable change to his appearance would be a scar on the back of his left hand, covering most of it. The Celtic Rune for Wolf. Based on how deep the scar was something serious made the cuts, but it would not be entirely clear what.
Kyle Arched his brow and looked at the purple haired girl sitting on the sink. He had seen her around before...but at the moment he couldn't really place from where. "Well you got me...what do ya want?"

written on them and had them scattered around the school. They said to find him in the abandoned toilets if they had a job. Thinking ahead, he made sure not to use his real name. But Rook. Sure it was a nickname people called him, but it was also a chess piece and was a symbol used by others so there was no hard proof it was him."Bully for hire"

It was him, that much was certain. The scar on his face was a tell-tale sign. she had no way of knowing it was from a life-changing encounter with a werewolf. An incident that would curse his blood, give reason to his aggression and primal instinct more oft suppressed by his 'civilized' peers. It would not have changed this encounter, less the fact that she would have taken measures to protect herself from his tooth and nail. In truth she had already decided what she would earn from this encounter, Rook's compliance was entirely optional. The girl had a big head, thought she was stronger than she actually was. Had DeRook claimed that he was stronger (17 strength) she would not have believed him and erroneously thought he spoke from a place of hubris rather than truth (Erin 15).
She would slide off the sink. She was in uniform, money afforded her the boon of having well-fitting, clean, new uniforms. Despite her frequent abuses and her nights in the basement rather than her bed, her garments were in better condition. Sanity, that was a different matter. Not that Kyle was likely right in the head either. "I want to go with you to the October dance," she announced. She was not one for making a mood, for gauging his response. It was a simple statement of I want, you provide. Yes, it was a demand, not a request. The sort of request that was opposed to the ones he likely heard most often - stop hitting me/her/them/him/it.
She assumed he knew her, he didn't (per his narration). So she never introduced herself as she approached him. She did not remember him being so tall. She did not like that, she coveted power in the form of physical presence and she disliked the fact that the boys were outmatching her in height. Not in the same manner as the part-giants, but still they were growing past her. She rolled her weight to her toes unconsciously, a jealous attempt to be slightly taller. "I see you in detention enough and remembered you from the pitch" there was also the dance that she failed to mention. Fucking Quinn, busted up her hand real good. She was not looking to hire him, but she pulled out a flier from her pocket. Nothing fancy but it had been around for awhile. She had saved it from the previous year (it was last year wasn't it?) and wordlessly handed it over to him. She was not looking for a job, she was looking for something else from him. "Going to be a crap time regardless, you seem like more fun than the rest. How do you feel about just ruining some days?"

As the girl hopped off the sink and walked towards him he couldnt help but raise an eyebrow. She was pretty that's for sure. Alot Prettier than the kind of girls who normally talked to him. At first he thought this was a trap, like she was prefect who was going to bust him for something. He started to think about ways out of the situation. he could just punch her. quick and easy and run away in the confusion. he could also try-
Kyle blinked, taken completely off guard by that. The last thing he expected was to get asked to the Dance. Especially by some pretty girl in nice cloths with purple hair. Then she spoke about seeing him in detention and around the pitch and thats when it hit him. She was the Slytherin Beater. He remembered the havoc she would wreak around the pitch. He couldn't remember her name, he was always shit with names, but he definitely knew her now. he was even pretty sure he had seen her in detention himself a couple times.
Kyle thought about this for a moment. a few moments actually. The last time he was at a dance he punched out a half giant and...and she got mad at him for fighting to defend some girl from being crushed by the half giant. infact. It might have been her, now that he thought about it. he shook his head that didnt matter. The fallout from the dance ended up ruining something that was really good for him and it was still a sore spot. in all honesty he never planned on going to another school dance but. The idea of going there and ruining it for everyone else appealed to him. If he cant be happy, if he cant have nice things. Then why should any one else?
He smirked and nodded a few times, the nefarious gears turning in his head. he crossed his arms "Alright Starling. You got my attention. I'm in"

She did not have a great track record with dances either. Where Kyle was still sore about his lost friend at last year's October dance, she spent that one jealous of Jack Warren's romantic escapades with some boring little girl. Earned a broken hand for that one, that girl probably deserved the hit anyways. Then there was yet another Jack, this time Burnett at the spring ball. That somehow turned out worse, she would have preferred another broken hand to a broken heart. Still sore, there was no magic that would mend that fissure, there was no chance in hell she was going to this dance alone.
She also had no intention of having a good time. She was angry. Miserable. She wanted everyone to feel the same way that she did. They let it happen, watched it with cruel interest. She could be just as monstrous, if not more so than they. She was far from clever or wise but she was not a complete idiot. She would bring their lives to ruin, but first some feel good chaos to bring in the new school year right.
After she made her declaration of intent - she did not need him to beat up an errant love, a girl she had scorned or a bitter rival. She wanted... a date? Rougher requests have likely been made of the boy, but a date with this part-Veela would never be gentle. He gave no reply, no affirmation, confirmation or denial. She was difficult to shame, and not due to an overabundance of pride but also because there was nothing to regret. No heart to be broken. No facade to fake and what little effort she made to fit within this social construct could be cast aside without a second thought.
So she went on, speaking a truth for herself and a truth that a kindred such as Kyle might recognize. He was a bully for hire for one simple reason - to ruin someone's day. To release that pent up frustration, the animosity. It was not concentrated, his aggression that is, because he lacked a specific enemy. He lacked a purpose. Anger was a part of his nature, a diversion from his self-loathing. She could provide what he lacked and gain a powerful ally in the process, not just a madwoman but a Slytherin also.
"Alright Starling. You got my attention. I'm in"
And like that a pact was made, not that she knew who Starling was. Had he confused her for another person, much like she had confused so many others as Parcelsus, the boy with the world's most common face? "Erin," she corrected. She was not going to allow a repeat of Jack's cruel game. A name he would never remember, not that she knew that. Not that she would ever catch on more than likely without it being carefully spelled out for her that her name was Starling. She had never had a nickname before, never understood the concept. The attempt at intimacy it mimicked. The boy could remember names, just not her name but rather the one he devised. It made the connection special, unique. When someone has little, there is great value in the meager sum they were afforded.
"October parties are usually the same old same old," she made a dismissive gesture with her hand. "Fixation on the spooky, the harvest, peacocking in costumes or the moon," she explained. Not particularly brilliant, she knew people and patterns and October had a distinct and repetitive pattern that would surely not fail them this year. "We will probably be asked to wear masks if not costumes, not that I give a shit about another week in detention," she scoffed. It was her second home. "But for once... might have some fun without the march of shame to some empty classroom," she shrugged. The march was not bad, but there was power in anonymity even for someone such as her who did not have anyone left to impress or protect. "I still owe Healy an ass-kicing."

"Fixation on the spooky, the harvest, peacocking in costumes or the moon,"
Kyle nodded, her brow furrowing some. He hated Halloween season. How much attention people put on being spooky, on making light about monsters. On dressing and pretending to be monsters. Laughing, having fun, parading around. Like they were mocking him, rubbing his nose in the fact that for them being a monster was fun because they can just take off the costume and go back to being normal. To having a normal life. His plight was a joke to them. His curse, a joke to them. His existence a joke to them. It made him angry, Angrier than he normally was anyway. The idea of ruining halloween for others was an idea he could very much get behind.
"We will probably be asked to wear masks if not costumes, not that I give a shit about another week in detention"
He nodded along with this sentiment. "I been through worse than detention. Not like any of the Dry Shites can give out a punishment that means anything. Time in detention is just time away from the pathetic losers wandering the halls" He wasnt sure why it took three years for the two of them to be having this conversation. They seemed to be cut from the same cloth, or atleast similar ones. Both were violent, both were angry, both had problems with authority. Why had he been wandering the halls alone and lashing out in random violence when there was another who was like him in a way. He contemplated telling her ahead of time what he was, instead of saving that particular bombshell for later but despite how he was starting to embrace his monster nature more and more, especially with the sharpening of his nails and the scratching of the Rune for wolf in the back of his left hand, he couldnt bring himself to actually say what he was. not at the moment anyway. Years of self loathing is not an easy thing to overcome.
"Dont know who Healey is, but I aint met a person who dont need a good ass kickin"
There was still one last thing that didnt make sense however. After he said he was in, She called him "Aaron" for some reason. He was trying to figure out why, she seemed to know his name when he came in. Who knows. "It's Rook by the way" he says tapping his chest twice. Perhaps a four letter word would be easier to remember than his whole name?

She had another reason for disliking Halloween. It was simpler than Kyle's. She had the mind of a survivor, in a horror movie she would be the last one that was battered and ruined but survived. That was because she was not stupid in terms of surviving, just a lot of other things. Costumes and masks made it easier for them to hide. Made them dangerous and unknown. Left her vulnerable. She planned on bleaching out the indigo from her tresses before the ball, it was such a unique aspect of her appearance that she would be unrecognizable with a natural coloring. When something is so utterly outrageous, one stops paying attention to everything else.
"It's Rook by the way"
He announced as he tapped himself in the chest.
"Shit," she muttered. Not necessarily the response Kyle expected as he corrected her. His name was indeed not Aaron/Erin, hers was. She did not know of any Rooks. "Like the chess piece? I thought you were Kyle DeRook," she admitted as she shook her head, failing to notice the fact that he had just shortened his own surname. This keeps happening! Dammit, why do all men look alike! First Paracelsus and now the former Quidditch Captain. "When does Kyle show up in here so I can ask him to the October dance," the girl somewhat knew what she wanted. A boy with an infamous reputation with whom she might earn a sense of solidarity.
She had no idea he was a werewolf, DeRook or 'Rook' was in any case. Had she, she would have thought twice about making this connection.

Cocked an eye brow and smirked slightly. Was she messing with him? he hadn't really joked around with anyone in awhile and honestly part of it felt...nice? Or at the very least almost normal. A welcome change to how things had been for him lately. But...then she continued the bit and he began to worry she wasnt actually joking and thought he meant he was a different person entirely. First she calls him Aaron then asks to tell her when Kyle DeRook would show up. He scratched the side of his head, he was getting confused.
"Starling no...like. My Nickname is Rook. Like the chess piece yeah. And Yer Starling. Normal names are just noise that bounce around and get lost among the gibber jabber. Nicknames stick, they're real. Least to me" he offers a shrug and returns his hands to his jacket pockets. He wasn't sure exactly who this girl was yet, or what she got up to or her paranoia about things but he knew she was an ass kicker from being a beater and from her own admittance to wanting to beat up some guy named healey so she was ok in his book. At the very least this might be someone who could finally understand him and not get chased off by his temper and violent tendencies.
"Now...is there a plan or are we going to more Chaotic and break shit as it happens type route." he offered a mischievous smirk

This is the problem with having the cumulative intellect of a mouse that cannot find the cheese in a maze is that not much gets done. Well, Erin was terribly clever, but she was quite mad. The he spelled it out for her--
"Starling no...like. My Nickname is Rook. Like the chess piece yeah. And Yer Starling. Normal names are just noise that bounce around and get lost among the gibber jabber. Nicknames stick, they're real. Least to me"
She was familiar with the custom of naming but she had never participated in the practice for the sake of mental recall. The most obvious question should be what or why Rook or Starling for the matter. Hers was a bit more relevant to her unstable state, "so you are also Kyle DeRook?" Ohhhh~ she just got it. Her concern was simpler than most, was he who she thought he was. There was a sad duality to her logic, she wondered how much of it was her fault because she garnered no sympathy for her instance of mistaken identity. She should have realized that he was in a different house. That he was completely different. He never lied, she just decided it and he had no opportunity. She saw it differently, that she might have made the initial mistake but he was the one that maintained the delusion. Fed it even.
Presuming that there was some confirmation she would simply nod her head. "Some people like to keep me confused," she admitted. Moving on.
"Now...is there a plan or are we going to more Chaotic and break shit as it happens type route."
"Something like that," she confirmed as she returned to her perch on the mounted sink. "At dances people do one of three things: snog, poorly dance, or stand next to the chips n' dip like the wallflower that they are." Not that most dances end that way, she missed the mosp attack at the last Blossom Ball, the part giant attempted kidnapping at the last masquerade ball and the part giant fight the Blossom Ball before that. She had the uncanny kill of avoiding disaster. "Something will go wrong at the dance, I just want to make sure it goes as bad as it possibly can," she announced as she cocked her head to make sure there was no eavesdroppers in one of the stalls. "Lock the doors. Let whatever is supposed to happen... happen this time and hell... make it worse." A vague plan because she did not know what was going to go wrong but she recognized the pattern. "Be the catalyst even," she exhaled.
The girl was troubled.

Kyle crossed his arms as the girl talked. He remembered What went down at the masquerade ball, especially his own physical victory in knocking down a half giant with one punch. He regretted not being able to actually finish that fight however. Maybe at this dance he could finish what was started? Not the worst idea. Despite his own evening being rather uneventful having missed most of the chaos, he had heard of the events of the rest of the night and the things that went down at seemingly every other event or occasion at this school. Was there Ever* a quiet calm year at Hogwarts? Probably not.
Most interestingly however, Erin wanted to lean into the trouble that was sure to come. Not stop or avoid it. Pour gas on the proverbial fire. He couldn't help but nod his head and smile mischievously. Locking the doors, inciting panic, starting fights, breaking things, pushing people towards the trouble that was inevitably going to happen. Or, As his date suggested, Being the Catalyst for the trouble entirely. It was a brilliant, if not somewhat twisted, Idea.
He wasnt sure what was in store, but he was happy to have found a kindred spirit in Erin atleast. He could finally have someone who didn't turn their back on him because of who he was. Granted he was nowhere near comfortable telling her what he was. Not yet anyway. That was not the best way to ensure a lasting alliance.
"I come here alot, but you can also usually find me out by lake as well if you ever need to find me. Where do you haunt if I need to track you down?"
