Place: An out-of-the-way corner of the courtyard at Hogwarts Castle
Date: Monday, September 7th, 2020
Time: Evening just after dinner, but before curfew
It had been quite a while since Thomas and Jack had last talked. Even then, it hadn't been in private. They hadn't really gotten to discuss things between them properly, such as what had happened at the Blossom Ball or the Fight Club, and Jack had been so busy studying up on Binding Marks and getting Ruka settled in with his family that he'd had little time for much else during the summer. He could have sent an owl, but the things he wanted to converse with Thomas about were not things he trusted to be sent by owl. Besides, he needed to read Thomas' body language, tone, and other non-verbal communication when he talked to him about what the meant to.

For this reason, after a small meal he would have called dinner on the Monday evening of their second week back at school, Jack got up from his seat at the table and went outside without a spoken word. He walked until he was in the courtyard, dim by the fading, blue glow of twilight, and went to lean against the cold stone wall in an area steeped in shadow. It wasn't yet curfew, but by the new rules, the prefects would likely be out and about soon to patrol for stray students to be herded back to their dorms. That was what Jack was counting on, anyway, because Thomas was a prefect now. He might not have known each individual prefect's route or time, but Jack was willing to bet Thomas' would have likely crossed through or around the area outdoors he had taken Erin and that other girl to go see that hag so many months ago.

As if his alliance with the hag - or hags, as it seemed - hadn't made him look suspicious enough, there was also his behavior toward Vlad during the ball and the fight club. Jack had become increasingly curious about this, especially since pieces of the puzzle were starting to point to Vlad having something to do with the hags and the curse of the black blood. However, the boy found himself unable to condemn Thomas as a traitor or a villain.

There were little things the taller, older Slytherin had said and done to give Jack pause. When he talked to the hag about Erin feeling no pain, for example. Yes, maybe it was bad that he had meant to hand Erin over to them in the first place. And yes, he had told Jack he had planned to betray her all along. But the fact that he had worried about her feeling pain, enough to speak up against creatures he was obviously terrified of and with good reason...didn't that mean there was some compassion in him still rather than cruelty and pure selfishness? Otherwise, he would have had no reason at all to worry about what she might have felt. She would have been dead.

Thinking hard on this had deprived Jack of his usual cheerful, teasing demeanor even outwardly for the whole day. His mouth was a set line as he stared into the deepening shadows of the courtyard, watching for signs of movement and listening for approaching footsteps, himself keeping as still and quiet as he could while still breathing. It was strange...almost like being a predator lying in wait for prey; a feeling that Jack wasn't all familiar with. By now, though, his patience had run out. Lives were on the line; lives he cared about as much if not more than his own.

Of all the interesting connections Thomas Lestrange had, the most intriguing had to be Jack Burnett. Crones aside, of course. What began with a link to a girl that shamelessly threw herself after the fox, the door quickly opened for the pair of boy’s to talk on a private level. And even with his reluctance to provide his given name, Jack was not shy to relinquish information with far more value. That he was not in it for the romance, instead playing his own separate game.

Though the real value was derived from Thomas, the other boy’s connection to Erin was an in for Jack to learn some of Thomas’ darkest troubles over a series of owls. Though no official agreement was made, Thomas expected the information shared to remain undisclosed. Not that it mattered on his end. Jack gave himself up the night of the ball somehow, leaving Thomas without any more cards to play with Burnett. Which led him to move on from information, and towards...people.

Despite the many topics the pair had to uncover, Thomas was not the type to actively seek someone out. Not to mention a private area of solitude was hard to come by, even if the grounds around this castle went on for miles. Someone was always watching, or something. But as the hours of daylight waned, Thomas took solace in his new routes associated with the badge. Ironic, as so often was he the student out in the darkness when he should not be. It’s not that Thomas did not respect the rules, he just did not follow him.

New expectations arrived as he was now a representative of his house, on par with a list of agreements his mother insisted upon for the boy to return to the castle. It developed a revitalized Thomas for the beginning of this year’s term, but there was not a guarantee this dedication would carry throughout the year. Once again his mother was absent, leaving Thomas with a void of consistent motivation. The boy would simply have to fuel it himself, or rely on another presence.

Thomas passed through the massive archway and out of the great hall following his dinner to begin his patrol for the evening. He arrived at a mostly vacant courtyard, a student here and there walking past him to return to the castle’s interior. He stopped near the fountain, the courtyard’s centerpiece. Icy blue eyes lost momentarily in the blue shades that ran down stone crevices. The water, the source of an unforgettable experience that redefined Thomas’ perception. He would always be drawn to it, as if the swashing ripples called to him.

A figure in the corner stirred, revealing a shadow that drew Thomas’ gaze. It was a peculiar spot to stand alone, leading his approach. As he neared the dwindling daylight did just enough to show the reddish hair and green eyes that were not easily mistaken in contrast to the black and green. Thomas’ halted upon this realization, standing at least 10 feet away from Jack. Turning to his left, Thomas began drifting to the side as the words left his lips. “Done chasing the girls for today?” His tone was playful, indicating he was not here for a fight. But he could not be sure how Fox chose to take those words.

Henry needed sometime alone, he needed to isolate himself off and be alone with his thoughts for a while which in the end would just have made manners worse as it was already a hour after curfew and the boy stepped into the courtyard dressed in his casual and most worn muggle clothing of worn out jeans, a long grey shirt, and his favorite faded jacket but he didn't appear to be carrying any bag or book which was quite unusual for the geek and know it all not to do but yet here he was, alone in the courtyard without anything to read and not expecting to find any other students, especially from his own house there.

When Henry stepped into the courtyard he was looking forward to some peace and quiet. For some time to be alone and just isolate himself with his thoughts as he dwelled on his hidden life and family a bit more but instead what he saw was a sight that made the second year anxious but also his blood boiled at the sight a bit. Two Slytherin's whom Henry recognized a bit from last year classes meaning these two were second year Slytherin's like him and one of them he barley remembers seeing him in his dorm last and this year, a place where Henry tries to actively avoid.

Even through he was in slytherin, at the moment he rather not be in that house because that was the house where is family was in and at the moment Henry didn't want any family. He didn't want his father or mother's surname which explains why he isolating himself that night and would have preferred not to have anyone else in that courtyard but here he was with two other Slytherin's who he tried to avoid, well actually he was activity trying to avoid all Slytherin's since he never seemed to fund his place in that house or anyone to talk with either which was another reason why he would have liked to be sorted in an different house; preferably ravenclaw or hufflepuff since his group or friends were in those two houses.

Henry decided to stay there after all since there were only two others there and he could easily avoid them as he made his way to the other side of the courtyard that the two were on and lean against a large oak type tree. Henry remained standing but leaned his head back on the tree and closed his eyes as his mind started to fill with thoughts about hidden life and family even through at times he heard the Slytherin's conversation.

His mind was filled with thoughts on his hidden life and family, he spent days isolating himself from the others and would continue it as a thought entered his mind. One that he felt before and couldn't shake, he spent hours dwelling on that night at the astronomy tower and here he was with that thought again. The twelve year old while he was matured above his age and smart he also had irrational thoughts and wants, tonight one of those popped into the young boy's head and that was to run away. His blood boiled while the hair on his neck stood up on it's ends, he felt uncomfortable thinking about it but yet he was longing for it also, to just run away.

Run away from his problems and worries, not needing to worry or dwell about them any longer, he piled be free and happy. The thought made Henry smile as he kept his eyes close tight and his heart pounding, he felt anxious but in a good way as the thought fleeing and escaping somewhere where he didn't need to worry about his problems filled him up and wouldn't leave him not this time. Some would say running away from your worries and problems were a bad thing, that they would only follow you and find you but to the twelve year old that has been isolating himself for a while it sounded perfect and like a plane that couldn't go wrong. Henry would have left at the moment that night, he would have ran and never looked back but something stopped him. Something that the slytherin couldn't explain, was it guilt? Fear? Loyalty to his Logan and other friends? Or was it something else that the boy didn't think of?

Before Henry could dwell on this thought any longer he heard a thump on the tree that he was leaning on, as he picked himself up from the ground and opened his eyes that's when he saw the red head slytherin; Nico Shymane whom Henry knew was the perfect of slytherin house. He dusted himself off and felt strange, instead of how he would have normally acted when he saw the girl which would be anxious, nervous, worried, apologizing like crazy but instead he didn't care. He felt no emotions or care about getting in trouble nor getting detention so he kept a blank face as he looked at her and had his ears filled with her voice, " Mr. Knight? Planning to spend the night here? Please make your way to our Slytherin Quarters... At this rate you'll be late..."

Henry just looked at her with the thought of running away still fresh in his mind and strangely no thought or care about getting in trouble as he spoke to her with a blank face " I actually was planning to spend the night here so you don't mind I'm going to go back to my spot where I have much on my mind at the moment," Henry then gave her a quick smile as he spoke " goodevening Perfect," before he slid back down the tree and lean his head on it as he close his eyes. The last sight he saw was the prefect walking over to the two boy's not that Henry cared since he had much bigger things on his mind, like if he should run away from all his worries and troubles or stay for reasons that he doesn't know yet.

Being out on Castle grounds this close to curfew wasn't something Ruka had ever made a habit of, but this particular Monday had given Ruka reason to ponder his thoughts in the coolness of the evening air after having picked apart his dinner without much appetite. After his talk with his Muggle Studies Professor about the Thestrals pulling the carriages to Hogwarts he had found himself wandering around aimlessly, like he was going to find answers to unasked questions if only he wasn't actively looking for them.

That state had continued after dinner, had made him get up from his table to make his way outside, balancing across the short wall encircling the inner courtyard until he had reached a tree whose branches hang low enough to easily climb up on. The oncomings of autumn had rid it of a good deal of its leafs already, so it didn't exactly make for a great hiding place if someone were to look up, but at least it gave Ruka a high point to keep an eye on things from. That was if he was actually keeping an eye on things; Lost in thought he had almost missed the arrival of familiar figures huddling together not too far away, the sound of their voices carried over by the light breeze, but nowhere near loud enough to make out what they were saying.

Frowning to himself, Ruka shuffled around to get a better view of the scene. With the strict new curfew regulations it seemed unusual for a small crowd of people to gather outside this late in the evening still, though Ruka recognised one of them as the Slytherin Prefect, Nico, so maybe she was only there to shoo the other students back to their dorm rooms.

Deciding to get a closer look at what was going on, Ruka slid off the tree, back onto the short wall, and jumped down to the ground with practiced ease.

"Sorry," he mumbled as he realised that yet another boy had been sitting beneath the tree he had occupied, pulling a slightly apologetic face at the stranger just in case he had startled him with his sudden appearance.

With his focus elsewhere, however, Ruka carefully made his way over to the small crowd of people, a little smirk pulling at his lips as he got close enough not to make any mistakes in identifying their faces. Shadows were a tricky thing, but Ruka had been right in thinking the figures had seemed familiar.

"I didn't realise snakes moved in groups," he pointed out as he approached them, coming to a halt next to Nico to offer the girl a warm smile. His last encounter with her had been rather pleasant, so he had no reason to meet her with any hostility. "Unless it's for a hunt." His gaze flickered suspiciously towards Thomas, head tilted to the side in question. A whole group of Slytherins in one location, late in the evening, was cause for concern in his experience.

With his expression filling with vague worry, Ruka turned to face Jack, eyebrows raised as if to scold his brother for the company he sought out and the time of day he chose to do so.

"So in this scenario," he continued, slight amusement twinkling in his eyes as he faced Thomas and Nico again, crossing his arms over his chest. "Who's the hunter, who's the prey?"

Opeila had made herself a new plan, a routine to follow, so she would not fall into some dark hole. She couldn't afford it.
Pain, guilt and hatred were all there, she felt them inside, carefully locked behind a door, but if she kept herself busy, it was far less difficult to keep that door shut.

Part of that routine was a jog before curfew. The more tired she was when she returned to the common room, the better. No lying in bed awake, being buried by thoughts she didn't want to think, feelings she didn't want to feel.

It was that time in the evening again. So short before curfew, most students were already back to their common room, she barely met anyone, that was why she went that late. Besides, it would influence her physical condition in a positive way. That would make fight training with Selim a little easier. If he agreed to still teach her this year.

Opeila was on her way back. It was already rather cool in the evenings, the Slytherin could feel the summer ending. She wore a green hoody and the black jogging trousers with green stripes, which she had already worn in the yoga event. Her hair was tied back in a messy bun, a few strands had fallen out and were now tucked behind her ears.

Opeila didn't really meet people on her jogs, so she was not prepared for running into a group of people. Most of them she knew, only one boy she couldn't match with a name.
Jack, the guy who had switched between being a jerk and a rather important person to her, ending up with her being unable to categorize him at all. Ruka, who she had once considered a friend but not spoken with in ages. Opeila would have been lying if she said that she had thought about him very much lately. She had told her grandmother that he was a friend, just a moment before she died, that was the last time. But now, when she looked at him, she missed talking to him in private. Maybe there would be a chance the next days.
Thomas L(ak)e(thrower)strange, who she had not talked to since he pulled her into the lake.

And Dhampir-prefect-girl Nico Shymane, who she would ignore completely now, as long as she did the same. Opeila had no desire to have another conflict this evening.

Trying to catch her breath again, she removed a strand of hair from her face and wiped some sweat off her forehead.
"Housemeeting plus friends?", she asked in a slightly sarcastic tone, looking at the group of Slytherins and Ruka.

Thoughts of escaping occupied the twelve year old mind as his eyes were closed tight and his head leaned back on the tree. He wasn't expecting anyone else besides that prefect to talk take him but it's not like Henry cared since his thoughts were focus more on one specific problem yet dream, to run away and leave all that way behind. If only he could, if only the young Slytherin could run away right now and right there, so he wouldn't have to face or dwell on his troubles and worried anymore but yet again something was stopping him, something that the twelve year old couldn't put his finger on. If only he knew then maybe he could find a way around his problem so he could flee, so he could escape, so he find peace again like he did last year and when he was younger.

"Sorry," Henry heard a voice and opened his eyes not expecting to speak or interact with another for a while. As he saw a boy around his age maybe a year older smile at him a bit as he apologized for something that Henry didn't know what since he was a bit too preoccupied with his thoughts but nevertheless Henry replied " no worries, mate." Mate it was a funny word, it didn't exactly mean friend but in a way it also meant friend but Henry also used it so much, without thinking that the word could have had different meanings sort of like the problem that was spiraling around the twelve years old head as he watched the boy join the other two Slytherin's and prefect. Henry started to hear more of their conversation but couldn't care as he started to get goosebumps and the hair on his neck stood on its ends, his blood boiled and his mind was racing as the thought of running away, of escaping from his worries and troubles filled his mind and the more he thought the more he wanted to do it.

Henry however kept his eyes opened as he stared at the sky, witness funny how peaceful things could still be. Henry had barely just looked at the sky and sat in peace without a thought on his mind since meeting his newfound hidden life and family but even when things changed some things will always remain the same. Henry was about to close his eyes again anyway when he saw another girl whom Henry didn't exactly recognized with a messy bun jog over to the already formed group and mention something about a house meeting so Henry assumed that she was a slytherin who Henry never met since he tried to avoid his house.

Run away, to be free of everything and everyone something this twelve year old wanted very much as he leaned his head back on the tree trunk and closed his eyes his mind was filled with spiraling thoughts of running away. All he wanted was to escape from a life that others wouldn't have consider to be the worst but if this kid had a time turner then he would use it but he didn't so the next best option was to run away and that was one thing that this twelve year old was considering and was ready to do.

“Done chasing the girls for today?”

Jack responded to the inquiry with a mirthless smile. "Whoever said I was chasing girls? What if they're the ones chasing me? Or I'm chasing down boys?" He pushed off the wall, lurching toward Thomas and reaching out to grab him by his striped tie (presuming he was wearing such a thing). "Like you."

In little to no time at all, however, the pair of Slytherin boys was joined by a Slytherin girl who appeared to have been conversing with some other housemate of theirs resting under a tree. If the color of her strawberry hair wasn't visible enough in the darkening evening to identify Nico by, her voice certainly was. She seemed to address Thomas first, simply asking him what he was doing, before turning to recognize Jack and wish him a good evening.

Jack blinked rapidly, taken aback by the drastic change in his upperclassman's demeanor. Then he remembered his manners and smiled politely, bowing his head.

"Good evening, Shymane." he replied lightly. How ironic that most people's moods seemed to sour and their brow creased when they noticed him, but Nico was one of the few whose expression softened instead. Jack wasn't sure that was a good thing. He didn't want to be on the bad side of the prefects, especially with what trouble Nico knew he'd been in prior, but he also didn't exactly feel comfortable being thought well of, either. Not that he knew for sure she thought well of him, but even the possibility made him uneasy.

"Sorry to cause a commotion. I just needed to speak with LeStrange, here. If we're causing a disturbance or upsetting your routine, I can talk to him while he accompanies me back to the dorms rather than converse with him out here while it's getting late."

He had hardly the time to turn back toward the castle, however, when he caught wind of another familiar voice addressing their group. And then another. Ruka and Opeila. Where were they all popping up from? Jack made a mental note that the courtyard was a less convenient place for a private conversation even at this time than he'd previously thought.

"Snakes don't move in groups, even for hunts," Jack answered Ruka, trying to catch the green gaze of his adopted older brother, unsmiling. Hadn't he tried to tell all the Lost Boys about his intentions prior to leaving the Great Hall, requesting they leave him be? ...Unless...

Oh.

"Regardless, I've caught my fish, so I guess you can say I'm the hunter." He smirked at Opeila. "And no, no housemeeting here. Nor friends. Just a gradually-growing gathering of curious kids. But there's really nothing to see here, so might as well break it up and head back inside. Curfew's soon, after all."

Glancing back toward Thomas with a meaningful glint in his eye, Jack tugged on the other boy's tie like a leash (or the front of his robes or shirt or what-have-you). "Come on, darling. I've got a bone to pick with you."

In the relative privacy of his own mind, however, he was saying something different to some other audience.

<My apologies, Boys. I thought I had told this to you earlier before I'd left the Great Hall, but I'd forgotten to say the word, so none of it went through. Thus, I'm repeating what I meant to tell you then.

I need to speak to Thomas LeStrange alone in what time I have before curfew to clarify a few things. That said, don't wait up for me; head to the base asap. I'll meet you there when I can.

Understood? Any questions?

A corner of privacy was a rarity in this vast castle. Whether a fellow lurking prefect that came and went, or the Peillow enthusiast herself who also...came and went. Likely off to take another dip as she is privy to do. Then to the Lion-spider boy, who spent his time among tree branches. A dangerous game, if you asked Thomas, the Whomping Willow is the only physically moving tree---that we know of, there could be more.

Below the familiar Gryffindor, another fellow Slytherin whom Nico briefly addressed before taking her leave. Thomas may now have a badge pinned on his robes, but he would not be a stickler for students roaming the grounds later than they should. Life has a way of teaching these lessons, these cautionary tales--who was Thomas to intervene. Besides, were they any safer inside the castle than out?

Thomas’ eyes flickered over to the pair of boys near the tree briefly before refinding the chatter fox. “Maybe when you stop chasing, they will too.” Thomas was blabbing as they call it, he had no clarity on what Fox may have wanted, or what he was chasing. Though the boy has proven to be your typical snake. Always a hidden motive, an agenda. As a like minded individual, he could deduce these pursuits were sourced from self interest. But like a competitive poker player, Fox plays his hand carefully, not readily offering any clarity for his pursuits. “So your days of being a melee weapon are over?” Thomas arched a brow with an overwhelming layer of sarcasm. A reference to the ball, where Jack served as a therapeutic instrument to toss and kick around.

Of course there were many unanswered questions for Jack Burnett. A perfect example to start, his refusal to offer his name upon their introduction. Or his hesitancy to provide what he wanted from Erin when agreeing to a ruse. And how did Erin learn of his trickery? Thomas had learned from his experiences. Acquiring a straight and honest answer would be like squishing water. Thomas has learned to adapt an indirect approach, leading him to deviate from whatever questions pressed his mind.

[Bypassing Pei and Nico’s interaction as they have both opted to leave the thread].

Thomas eyed Ruka carefully on his approach. Not that Jack was not already aware of their connection. Though he would remain hesitant to reveal anything past than what met his eyes the night of the ball. His greeting would take on a different tune, one that insinuates distance--acquaintanceship. Even if the firefox’s status was steadily ascending to someone Thomas would consider...a friend. “Tan.” He issued a nod of formality, nothing more.

Like Thomas, Jack witnessed a group of snakes band together to achieve a similar task. Though the boys that currently stood across from each other diverged from this rushed plan. The scenario still supplied the theory not all snakes are alike, working together was not a foregin concept for all. "Come on, darling. I've got a bone to pick with you." Thomas’ brows elevated, the boy left looking around the courtyard, dumbfounded. His head came to a stop, glancing once at Jack, then Ruka. “I-I didn’t see Erin here…did you?

Thomas resisted the boy tugging his robes with a gentle shake of his head. “I’ll be where you should be in twenty minutes. Unless of course you wanted to catch detention as well?” Offering a self-satisfied smile, Thomas turned away towards the Castle’s entrance. It was never his intention to flaunt his prefect powers in such a manner, but he would not deny the satisfaction that came from doing so.
