Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021

Juan has been quite nervous ever since he got the admission letter from Hogwarts due to the anxiety it provokes on him knowing the fact that his world is about to completely change.

After getting all the materials he needed for his classes and waiting a few days the day of boarding the train towards Hogwarts had arrived. At first his parents took him to the 9 1/4 departure station in London and which for him was nowhere to be found, until they convinced him to run through a wall which seemed a bit confusing for Juan but that did not stop him. Luckily he made it past the wall and in front of him there was the station where he saw many other people boarding the same train he was supposed to. Juan finally said bye to his parents, gave them a hug and a bit scared he boarded the train, he waved bye to his parents right before the train left the station and realized that he was on his own now. He said hi to a couple of people, but decided to skip the journey by simply falling asleep.

After a few hours of traveling he woke up, took his belongings and followed the crowd until they all reached the doors of this huge castle, he looked up before entering this marvelous place, took a deep breath and said "here we go". Juan and all the other first year students were taken to the Great Hall where there were a lot of food and 4 long rows of tables, and at the end of the room a magical looking hat that could talk. Everyone was greeted, while the first year students were standing in front of this hat, the headmaster kept on calling the first year students one by one until he said "Juan Rivera, please take a step forward" and so he did, the magical hat was placed on his head, it took a moment to decide what it was going to say until it finally said "hmmm Juan Rivera you seem to have the qualities to be a great Hufflepuff, but I know you will be greater if I put you on Gryffindor and so Gryffindor shall be your house" Juan didn't know how to react, he was surprised and quite satisfied with the choice, he proceeded to walk towards the table filled with Gryffindor students and sat with them.

Great was certainly the word to describe it.

Tina had been told countless tales of the grand food hall at Hogwarts, but it hadn't fully registered in her mind how fantastical the room actually was. The ceiling was, just as her sister had described, a projection of the world outside, seeming to open up for the wonderful black abyss of night sky that would usually be covered, thousands of twinkling candles floating overhead like stars. Long rows of portraits lined the walls, the wizards portrayed inside them stirring, waving and watching the new students in a way that was both fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Hundreds of children, all wearing pointed hats and black cloaks, buzzed with chatter and excitement as the - what felt like endless - line of first years made their way in through the massive double doors.

It was impossible to describe her excitement at the moment. Tina felt like she might burst with all the adrenaline bubbling up inside her. Her chest was heavy with it, her legs stiff as she walked on, fidgeting hands wringing out her cloak, with a permanent smile pulled across her face. Butterflies were going crazy in her stomach, making her feel sick. She felt like the world was watching her right now: something which only encouraged those amazing things she was feeling right now. She needed some way to expel energy. She needed to talk or jump about but she couldn't. The room was so alive it was unbearable.

All of a sudden, everything fell silent.

With her short stature, Tina couldn't see the front of the room to tell what was going on. She tried to look around the person in front of her, desperate to get a glimpse. A man, who she recognised as Headmaster Lear immediately, was stood on the raised platform in front of the Professor's table, clad in a full suit of armour and holding a scroll. Must be difficult to walk in, Tina mused, almost giggling to herself. He probably squeaks when he walks.

"Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient."

Tina flinched at the sound of the Headmaster's voice. It was a lot louder than she's expected. What startled her more, however, was the immediate reply they received.

"Sentient, I am intelligent."

Tina had also heard about the sorting hat from her sister, but she hadn't expected it to, well, speak. She had sort of just assumed it would allocate students to houses by... glowing different colours or something like that. It was a reasonable theory, she thought. After all, hats didn't talk!

She couldn't dwell on this too long, however, as the sorting was about to begin. One after another, children were called up to the stage, directed to sit down on a rather small stool at the front, and the sorted into their house. Every time, the respective table burst into cheers, welcoming their new student with furious applause. Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs, Slytherins... Each one had their merits, yet Tina knew where she wanted to be.

Gryffindor was the best of them all. Everyone thought so. So many famous witches and wizards began their journey in the house of the lion, or so she'd read as much. Tina thought she would make a pretty good fit, as well! She was brave, sometimes, and was always chivalrous and kind to others. She just had to show all these qualities to the hat and she'd be set!

"Martyna Romero!"

Tina nearly leapt out of her skin. It was hard not to jump when she was so on edge. Already? It felt so strange to have her name called out in front of all those people. Still, she scrambled up to the front, her cheeks glowing slightly from all the eyes on her. She wanted to make eye contact with the Headmaster, give him a little wave maybe, but found it very difficult to do so. Instead, she just plonked herself down on the stool without looking directly at anyone.

Less than a second later, the room in front of her disappeared, and everything went dark.

"Hm? Why, another Romero!"

Tina gasped at the sudden voice, almost coughing after she breathed in a gulp of musty air from inside the hat.

"No need for that now... Let's see, it's been a while since I sorted your sister. She's a mighty fine Ravenclaw..."

Tina felt herself grow a little irritated by that. "What about me?" she asked. Her voice was sharp, but she spoke as quietly as she could, trying not to alert anyone else around them. Thankfully, the thick fabric of the hat muffled her voice.

"Yes, of course. I suppose you're the jealous type, aren't you?" When the hat felt Tina huff in response, it chuckled. "I jest, let me think now... I see you're quite worried about the way others perceive you. Deep down, you've only got good intentions. You shouldn't fret so much about it too much. The right people will like you, that I have faith in."

Tina couldn't quite tell if the hat was insulting her or not. She was confused, more than anything, trying to digest whatever it was saying, gripping the sides of the stool. How many seconds had passed since it had been put on her head, she didn't know.

"What I see most of all is that your resilient. You're a hard working, because you don't want to be average. I think it's obvious where you belong, don't you?"

The hat paused for a second, before opening its flap and booming out to the rest of the world.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
At once, the hat was whipped off her head and she was ushered over to the Hufflepuff table. There was something very conflicting about being put in a house she didn't want, whilst everyone was screaming at her saying how happy they were to have her. It was difficult not to smile at the praise. Her disappointment would have to sit in the pit of her belly, until she had time to think on it more.

"Give me five, girl!" This was the moment Hope stoped dreaming and realized the situation. The situation of crossing a big hall in a huge castle. But it didn't even seem to be a castle. The ceiling of the famous "Great Hall" looked rather like the night sky. But there were also these candles, which hung of the ceiling. All in all it looked like a sky full of candles. Very magnificent. Nearly as magnificent as the ride she had, to come here. The feeling of shaking her brother's hand, who sat at the Slytherins table, remembered her of shaking the conducter's hand, while boarding the Hogwarts-Express.

It was a long ride with no stops. Hope and her brother had forgot to bring their own food and after three hours she felt like dying. A few minutes later a woman came, who sold sweets and pumpkinpies. Luckily her brother had taken money from home. After she got out of the express, Hope and the other first graders had to go to a lake. Her brother, however, was driven away in a strange carriage. When they arrived at the lake, some boats were already waiting for them. They got on the boats and started floating over the lake, covered by fog, as if by magic. After about 10 minutes, one saw a light, which developed after about 15 into a big illumination. Into the illumination of Hogwarts. Once on the other bank they had to take a small path, but then they arrrived. In front of a gate, as big and impressive as Hope has never seen before. From one moment to the next, the gate opened and behind it, someone was waiting to welcome them all and lead them to the Great Hall.

The hall in which right now she watched the candels on the ceiling. Suddenly she noticed how someone called her name and pleased her to sit down on a chair that already had an old hat on it. Hope took place and put on the hat. Nothing happend. "Hallo?", she asked shy. After, what felt like eternity, she heard a voice in her head. No! In her mind. "Ahhhhhhhhh! I know your brother, a very joking one, but a real Slytherin.....Mhhhhhh....But you.....you.....you're different......Let's see...." She didn't want to interrupt him, but Hope had the urgent need of screaming.Scream and cry as loud as she could. "Are you crying?", the hat asked "Look, your brother knows what he wants and that makes him to a Slytherin. But you.....you're intelligent and brave." She sobbed. Hope sobbed so loudly and clearly that everyone in the hall could hear it. And the hat called out:

"GRYFFINDOR"

With all her strength, she dragged herself to the Gryffindors table. While passing by she saw her brother, the funniest and most cheerful person she ever knew. He cried.

The Gryffindors welcomed her carefully. They helped Hope to sit down and comforted her.

Stepping into the Hogwarts Great Hall was unlike anything she’d ever experienced before. The large moving and animated portraits on the walls, talking and laughing with each other, the sheer amount of students, and the Headmaster in his medieval getup. It was strange. And exhilarating. The place was massive. Or rather, it felt massive, and more. The ceiling was obscured by the night sky, or some magical effect that made it turn into the night, reflecting almost perfectly what she’d seen on her way to the boats. She could feel her heart thumping in her chest, butterflies toiling in her belly. She was finally in Hogwarts.

Her parents told her as much about Hogwarts as they could. But no matter how many photos she’d seen or how many stories they shared, nothing could prepare her for this. She greeted the headmaster with a smile and watched him with the other students as he made his way to the front and started giving a speech. She tried to listen, but was mostly focused on the moving portraits, the numerous students, and he Heads of Houses all looking down sternly at them. Then, the sorting hat sang. She knew about this too — not the song, that was new to her — but the sorting hat itself. Her mother would go on and on about it, how it set her up to be in the best House for her while she was here.

Then the ceremony began. And students were called. One after another. And she watched. Her nervousness growing with each passing name, knowing that at any moment she would be called on. And those nerves were mixed with a level of excitement and anticipation. Her mother had been in Ravenclaw whereas her father was a Slytherin and she always believed she took more after her father. His wily nature, easy laugh, and casual mischievousness. Her mother was convinced she was going to Ravenclaw however, said it had a lot to do with her cleverness, but she saw that more in her father than in her mother.

Then her name was called.

Her thoughts came to an abrupt end. Her mouth going instantly dry. Head thrumming with the sound of blood rushing through her ears. Her name was called again and she stood on shaky legs. And walked forward, eyes plastered on the writhing hat.

The Headmaster nodded to her as she passed by and settled herself on the stool. And the hat was placed on her head.

“Hmmmm,” the hat said, “let’s see, let’s see… Ah! I sense a devious cleverness about you, a most suiting trait for Slytherins.” The hat paused, considering, “but you need more than that to be a true Slythering. No… I sense that cleverness coming from somewhere else. A yearning for knowledge. For power.”

It paused again.“You wish to be a great dueler like your father. Yes, I see it. You hunger for it. I see, I see. Hardworking for sure, but that thirst for knowledge, to go through every book to attain your dreams is telling.”

The hat paused once more. Longer this time.

“Ravenclaw!”

The hat was removed from her head as she stood. Ravenclaw? She heard the clapping and shouting students on the Ravenclaw table and was directed towards it, all the while her thoughts racing. Her mother was right. She would end up as a Ravenclaw, while she was hoping for Slytherin. But, she couldn’t complain. At least she ended up in one of the houses her mother was in, so she had that going for her.

Putting a smile on her face, she sat down at the table and chuckled, letting herself grin and laugh in merriment for the first time since entering the Great Hall.

'Heart don't fail me now, Courage don't desert me, don't turn back now that we're here' was all that echoed through the mind of the young brunette female as she entered through the extremely large old wooden doors into the great hall alongside the other first-years who had all been gathering outside in the entrance hall upon their first-ever journey to the ancient school known as Hogwarts. For many this day had been much looked forward to throughout their lives so far but sadly for Orianna, she happened to be in the minority of those who could have never expected what life faced them ahead even a year ago.

Upon entry, the young girl would first realise how large in size the hall seemed to be with four large tables spread evenly down the sides students seated already who had already been in attendance, the scent of countless cooked goods of the feasts spread out along them ahead one more table thinner in size with countless adults sat patiently with smiles flickering in the direction of the first years as they gathered in the doorway in two lines with portraits that mystically moved to inspect the scene as it unravelled ahead of them.

However, One adult, in particular, caught the young girls attention the figure of a tall man clad in armour with dark eyes, grey hair and a long beard who soon enough introduced himself as Professor Solomon Lear the headmaster of the school as he started his long and tiresome speech welcoming both new and returning students for another year of study at Hogwarts before moving on to introduce the sorting ceremony and how it worked as a timed old tradition of the school life.

Listening intently, Orianna would soon be taken back a little whilst almost like on cue an old musty hat suddenly began to speak.. no not speak.. sing. Singing a song about Hogwarts and its founding thousands of years previous by four famed witches and wizards in their own right... Helga Hufflepuff, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and finally Salazar Slytherin before the whole room burst into applause as the long-haired brunette joined in the cheer the nerves setting in as she wondered what house she would truly belong but soon enough not only her but the whole school would know.

Being ushered forward along with all the rest of the first years one by one the whole of the first year would slowly be sorted into their house before joining the correct table when suddenly the nerves kicked in well and truly for the young girl as two words echoed through the silence.. the two words that the girl had both been excited but dreading to hear her name. "Orianna Lightfoot!"

Stepping forward Orianna would take the seat her heart racing so fast it felt like it would burst out of her chest at any moment as she closes her eyes tightly shut the dusty old hat being placed upon her head as it begins to speak to which she didn't really pay attention to with being so nervous all until a single word echoed loudly throughout the hall the place erupting into a cheer as she was finally sorted into her house, standing up with a resounding smile the young girl swiftly takes her leave from the view taking her place at the table of gold moments later.

The grand hall was- well it was grand! And exciting! The energy from all the older students made Edna practically buzz. She was bouncing in place as she rocked back and forth from her heels to her toes. The girl was ready to go! She wanted to be sorted! Unfortunately, with a last name like Watts, she was going to have to wait a bit! The impatient girl kept bouncing up and down as she waited for her name to be called. Edna was ready! She was going to join Gryffindor! Just like her father! Her eyes lit up, and she grinned widely when her name was finally called.

The rather quite large hat was placed of her braided red hair. Edna briefly wondered if they ever washed the hat, or if she'd have several centuries old dandruff on her hair now. Before she could ponder the thought even more, a voice reached her ears. The hat was talking. Her eyes widened. ”Bravery and a recklessness that would be fit for Gryffindor...” Edna's eyes widened. Yes! Gryffindor! Just like her father! ”You wish to carry on your father's torch... to become brave like him. You do resemble him.”

Edna was practically bouncing in her chair with excitement as the hat spoke. Yes! She was like her father. Her father was the best person in the world as far as Edna was concerned. The hat continued to make soft hmms and tsks. ”Yes, you'd fit right in at Gryffindor... you would go on many adventures and make many friends...” Edna was practically about to burst at the seams with excitement. Why didn't he just announce Gryffindor already!?

”Yes, Gryffindor would work- but...”

Edna's eyes widened. But!? What but!? The girl's eyes shifted up to the rim of the hat. ”You would make many friends but many enemies. There's something more to you than a rash but brave little girl,” he began quietly. Edna wasn't listening. She was still hung up on the 'but.' ”Yes, yes I see. A great protector- you'll need allies for this, those who will temper your steel.” Edna had no idea what any of that meant! She just wanted Gryffindor! And then the hat finally spoke aloud.

Saoirse followed the seemingly endless line of fellow first years as they all headed up to the Sorting Hat. Her sisters had explained what the hat did and how it was an abnormal article of clothing so the terrified girl both knew and didn’t know what was going to happen. Her dark eyes- covered in green contacts-flitted over to the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw tables, causing her to make awkward eye contact with the older students and her sisters alike. The pressure was always on Saoirse but it was more intense than usual.

It was less of an annoying insect flying around your ears and more so a feeling of impending doom. She currently was flooded with fear because based on the obviously biased comments on Slytherin House and how everyone there was evil in one way or another, Saoirse was sure she’d end up in the deemed horror house. Luckily, she didn’t have to wait long- thank god she had a last name within the first five letters of the alphabet, and soon it was her turn on the podium.

The nervous child forced a look of indifference on her otherwise panicked features as she tried to give off her best Slytherin vibes. If she was going to be placed in Slytherin, she might as well become the poster child of that house. Saoirse wasn’t ready, hell she’d never be ready for this- her hands were balled up into tight fists as the infamous Sorting Hat was placed on her unruly mane of hair.

Shifting on the aged and asymmetrical stool, she tried to calm herself down and did a few breathing routines when the hat spoke. Frightened nearly to death, the tiny figure nearly fell off her seat and caused what could and would have been the most embarrassing thing ever committed in Hogwarts history or at least in her opinion . The hat covered her eyes for the most part and a quick thought of dread went through her, what if the hat had lice or mites?

A shiver ran through her as the hat started speaking to her, “Hmm you think you’ll be Slytherin...yes it is a suiting fit and you’d make quick friends in the snake den...” A small and slightly terrified smile covered her face as the hat started talking again, “Snake-like and cunning are you but deep down I sense strong loyalty and a bit of a bottomless heart...Hufflepuff would be a worthy home.

Saoirse’s face curdled into a look that could only be simply described as disgust and confusion. Hufflepuff? That couldn’t be right, she didn’t know the first thing about sharing, humility, kindness, not friendships. If he to be a mistake, she couldn't be a Hufflepuff- she just couldn't be!

The hat finished its speech off with, “Your solitude is your most fatal weakness, enemies alike will use it against you, but in the Badger Burrow you’d have those who’d unite to soften your temper and solidify your strengths.” Once done the hat cleared its throat and yelled outed, much to Saoire’s disdain,

HUFFLEPUFF!

Felix entered the great hall along with his other fellow first years and was amazed at what he saw.
The hall was absolutely grand, the ceiling even looked like a galaxy. He couldn't help but look around in shock and amazement. He couldn't believe that this was the place he would be going to school for seven years, absolutely brilliant.

He realized that the others had stop walking and so quickly planted his feet and stopped before he accidentally went to far. He looked forward to see that their was a chair, and on that chair was a relatively old looking hat. He remembered reading about it somewhere and that it was called the... sorting hat. It was what decided what house each student was sorted into.

One by one, different names where called and the first years were called up to be sorted. Felix was bouncing up and down on his toes with a big grin on his face, he couldn't wait to learn which house he was going to end up in. Eventually, he heard his name called and excitedly walked up to the chair. He sat down and felt the hat be placed on top of his head.

He jumped slightly when he heard a voice suddenly say his name. "Aah young Felix Hayes, it certainly has been a while since a Hayes has come here," the voice continued. Felix soon realized that the hat was the one talking and started to listen intently. "You are almost the spitting image of your mother in terms of looks and personality, you truly are Poppy's son," the hat continued, and Felix felt his smile falter slightly. He had never known his mother and no ever really talked about her so this was very sudden. "Aah yes, a heart made of gold and the willingness to always help those in need, yes I know the perfect house for you," the hat told him, Felix held his breath slightly.

"Hufflepuff"

Felix felt the hat being lifted off of his head and he smiled brightly. He was so excited, he almost couldn't believe this was happening. He quickly made his way to his new house's table, this was the start of a new chapter in his life.

As Georgianna waited for her name to be called, she could feel her hands beginning to tremble at her sides. She reached into the right-hand pocket of her robes and clutched tightly to the flower there. She'd plucked a peony from her garden before she'd left home that morning for luck. It was comforting to have a small piece of home between her fingers, and it made her think of Grandma Anne.

Be strong, like Grandma! Don’t be a coward.

Georgianna took a deep breath and steadied herself. She didn't know why on earth she was so nervous. Her mother had explained the sorting ceremony to her more than once and assured her there was nothing to worry about. Georgianna was certain she’d be sorted into Hufflepuff, and that suited her just fine. She’d always been shy and had no desire to try to prove she was brave enough to be a Gryffindor, and though she’d always loved to read, she’d never fancied herself to be particularly intellectual, so Ravenclaw seemed unlikely. She knew Slytherins were known for their ambition and cunning, but she didn’t really see herself that way either. Both her mother and grandmother had been in Hufflepuff, and the common room sounded beautiful from what they’d described. As usual, her mother had fallen into a wistful silence when Georgianna had finally built up the courage to ask what House her father had been in.

“It doesn’t matter, G.” she’d said after a long pause. “We make our own destinies.”

Well, no matter, what, it’ll all be over soon.

She hoped she would be able to make friends with some of her fellow first years in whichever House she was sorted into. She’d never been very good at meeting people. G had always been more comfortable with her mother or grandma, or even in just the company of the flowers in her garden.

“Georgianna Spencer!”

The sound of her name ringing in the hall jolted Georgianna back to the present. She felt all the muscles in her body tense as she made her way to the front of the hall and sat upon the stool. She felt the hat being placed upon her head and forced herself to take another deep breath.

“Ah, well isn’t this an interesting one…let me see….”

Georgianna’s anxiety continued to mount as she waited for the hats answer.

“Hmmm…well, I think I know what’s needed here. There’s a desperation to prove worthy of those who have abandoned you…and a fear of not living up to those who have not…you have more potential than you than you realize, my dear! Your thirst for success will serve you well.”

Georgianna held her breath.

“SLYTHERIN!”

Georgianna stood up in a daze as the sorting hat was removed from her head and the Slytherin table erupted with applause. She couldn’t believe it. She wasn’t disappointed, exactly, just in shock. She made her way over to her new House table and found a seat at one of the benches next to another newly sorted first-year girl. The girl was very pretty, she noticed, with long dark hair and brown eyes. Georgianna suddenly felt self-conscious about her own appearance. Her wavy red hair and freckles didn’t have nearly the same elegant effect. She briefly wondered if she should say hello and try to make friends with the girl, but then the next name was called and all attention returned to the front of the hall.

The more she thought about her new House the more bewildered she became. She didn’t have what it took to be a Slytherin, did she? She wasn’t cunning, she didn’t have high ambitions for herself…there must have been some mistake. But as she watched other students being sorted and making their way to their House tables, she began to feel a sense of excitement spreading through her. Maybe there was more to her than she herself even knew.

Being told about Hogwarts and being inside the school are two completely different things. Aneira was, for the first time, nervous. Her older siblings had left her to take the carriages while she walked with the other first years to the boats. Even in the dark night sky, Hogwarts is beautiful and frighteningly huge. She wondered how she would ever find her way around such a large school.

It seems like seconds later she is walking into the great hall. Eyes wide with awe and interest. She gives a grin to the guy in armor. Headmaster Lear She remembers the twins telling her.

"He is a pretty nice guy," Nikita, her older sister, mentioned,

"Even with his slight oddness," Obsidian added, Nikita giving a nod of agreement.

"What is odd about him?" Aneira scrunched her brows in confusion.

"You will see," They say in unison, "You will know him when you see him."

Aneira now understands the oddness her siblings were talking about. He is nice looking. But, isn't armor a little old? She didn't pay him too much mind though as she was overwhelmed with the new environment she was in. Magic is such a wonderful thing.

Everything was a blur. From the speech from the Headmaster to the song the hat sang. The witch was soaking everything in. She absolutely loved trying to guess the houses the first years before her were going into. She personally had no preference for which house she goes into. She leans a bit towards Ravenclaw but that is only because she loves to read. Hermione likes to read and is in Gryffindor She reminds herself,You could be in any house.

Suddenly she heard, "Aneira Voiles!"

With a grin, Aneira skipped up the stairs and onto the stool. She saw the twins, Both in Slytherin, and gave them a sly smile. They grinned in return, giving their silent strength and confidence. Aneira and the twins may butt heads at times, they still are there for each other through everything.

Suddenly everything went dark as the hat was placed on her small head, "Well, well, well," The hat spoke into her head, "Another Voiles I see. Now your older siblings were fairly easy to place. Their intelligence and vast ambition is perfect for Slytherin."

"Now, child, where do you belong?"

The question caused Aneira to actually think about it for a moment. She has a lot of qualities from all the houses. She probably wouldn't belong to Hufflepuff though. It just isn't right for her.

" Ahh, I agree. You are kind but that is not your strongest trait. You have the wit of a Ravenclaw and ambition of a Slytherin. But your determination and stubbornness," The hat chuckled, "Yes, you are-"

"GRYFFINDOR"
