Distracted by a Novel
The sun was setting as Akari had finally left the library, taking with her Hogwarts; A History and stowed it away under her arm. She had spent the entire afternoon exploring the library and skimming through only a few of the hundreds of thousands of books that filled the shelves. She had come across this book and had decided to take it back with her. Perhaps this book could help her understand Hogwarts a little bit more. She had a very vague idea of the school grounds but was still very prone to getting lost. Even though she knew this, she nevertheless had decided not to wait until she reached her dorm to take a closer look at the book.
She gently ran her fingers down the cover of the book before opening it and beginning to read the introduction. The pace she was walking at started to gradually become slower as she proceeded to get more and more immersed in the books pages. She unconsciously took random turns throughout the corridors and climbing staircases she had never been up or even near.
Eventually she came upon a floor she never even knew existed but still had not noticed. Her small hands grasped the book tightly and her eyes were glued to the pages. Since she wasn't paying a single bit of attention to her surroundings and did not detect that there was a small step that she needed to go around to not fall. She took a step with the normal pressure that she would have if there was the regular floor underneath her, but since the step was lower it caused her knee to buckle and she stumbled nearly falling over. She spread her arms out trying to regain her balance. This obviously shook her out of the book and at long last she saw where she was. Her mouth hung open slightly as she scanned the hallway she was in. She was at an utter loss and had absolutely no idea where she was. She scratched her head and looked in every direction trying to recognise something, but to no avail. She shut the book and once again put it under her arm then wondered how she manage to get so distracted.

Miranda's day had been very productive, if you asked her. She'd gotten all of her assigned homework done over two hours in the library, on top of all the notes she'd studied from the classes she'd attended earlier that day. Now that evening was here, she was finally heading back in the general direction of the Ravenclaw tower. Unfortunately, she'd gotten turned around with all of the shifting staircases, and was a bit confused as to where she currently was.
Somewhere above the main floor, that was for sure, but not yet in one of the towers. Miranda grumbled in frustration as she walked, scanning the walls and decorations in hopes of spotting a familiar landmark. She wasn't really worried about staying out past curfew, because, for one, she was quite adept at dodging prefects and professors, and two, she was bound to get her bearings soon.
Although, this interruption would mean less time doing other things...and exploring corridors had long ago lost its luster. And Miranda didn't really feel like looking for secret passages or exploring rooms at the moment. She had better things to do than get lost even more thoroughly.
Miranda started to walk a bit faster, still going out of her way to study any ornaments in the halls. Even if she didn't know them yet, they might get in handy if she got lost again.
She rounded another corner, and noticed two things simultaneously. One was the girl that stood in the center of the new corridor, looking around as if confused - maybe she was also lost? The other thing she noticed was a memorable statue of a hunched crone that she knew from experience marked a certain area of the second floor. That meant she wasn't lost anymore, which was a great relief. But maybe the girl still was? Miranda could help with that.
"Hello?" she called out, hoping her intrusion would be greeted by a more positive response. "Are you lost?"

Akari still was gazing around the corridor and started contemplating her options. She could continue wandering around aimlessly and hopefully end up back at her dorms, but that was pretty risky since it was getting rather late and she had been warned that the perfects like to snitch on you if you’re out passed a certain time. She surely didn’t want that, she didn’t want to cause any trouble especially in her first year here. Then she had the option of staying where she was and wait for someone to pass by then ask them for directions.
After awhile of ponding Akari had decided that it would be best to stay put for a bit and hoped that someone would pass by soon.
She jumped slightly at all of a sudden hearing a voice calling out
"Hello?" "Are you lost?"
She whipped around to look in the direction of the sound and saw a girl standing there. She inhaled deeply and had a wave of relief wash over her, thankful that someone was there.
She nodded and gave her a small and nervous smile then stammered out a squeaky and embarrassed “yes”then pursed her lips.
This was not the first impression Akari would have preferred but there wasn’t much she could do about it now.

The girl spun around sharply, which made Miranda regret not announcing her arrival sooner to prevent the surprise. She herself didn't like getting snuck up on even accidentally, although if asked, she never admitted to the fact. The strange girl, who seemed a year younger than Miranda, was no doubt a first year new to the layout of the castle and the corridors within it. No wonder she was lost.
"I can help you," Miranda offered with a smile. "I know my way from here, so if you'd like..." she trailed off, still smiling kindly. This was an infinitely better way to spend her evening than studying even more of their school books for classes they wouldn't take for weeks. She could always do that later, while the amount of time she spent with newcomers...was more limited. Best to take advantage of it.
Suddenly, an idea came to her.
"You know, unless you have anything planned for the evening, I could take you on a tour of the main passages and classes in Hogwarts," Miranda suggested, her smile widening almost imperceptibly. She knew it was possible the girl might refuse, but the offer had been made, and it was the thought that counted, right? "It'll help keep you from getting lost or turned around next time," she added just to clear up any possible confusion.

Akari lips were still very much pursed shut as the girl continued to speak offering her help. The girl gave her a very kind and sweet smile which made Akari a little more at ease. She was counting her luck that someone who seemed so kindhearted had found her.
"You know, unless you have anything planned for the evening, I could take you on a tour of the main passages and classes in Hogwarts," "It'll help keep you from getting lost or turned around next time,"
The girl piped up. A grateful grin slowly spread on the first years lips as she nodded indicating that she would like that before actually speaking up
“Oh, yes please! I’d be eternally grateful. As you can see I’ve been having quite a bit of trouble finding my way around here with the amount of corridors, moving staircases, and such”
She had left out the part about the book because it wasn’t that important for the girl to know how foolish she had been. Who in their right mind would start reading a book while walking around in a huge place that they barely know?
Akari walked over to where the girl was standing then decided she should probably provide an introduction so she cordially extended her hand for the girl to shake then went on to introduce herself.

What had originally been shaping up to be another normal evening had quickly turned around, and was now looking to be much more interesting. So Miranda wasn't complaining, and showing around a first year would provide her with someone new to talk too, unless she was shy, but the girl didn't really seem to dislike talking...at least, that's what Miranda hoped.
"And I'm Miranda Everest," she replied with another grin. "Also known as your honorary tour guide for the evening." Miranda reached over and shook Akari's hand firmly, then backed up and took a look around.
"Right now we're on the second floor," she began, gesturing at a nearby window, which showed nothing but sky from their perspective. "Hogwarts has seven official floors, plus the towers. That total includes the basements and the ground floor." Miranda leaned closer to Akari, her eyes glittering mischievously. "But don't forget, there are also rumours of at least one more floor that's kept secret from the majority of the student body. I've never been able to find it...but one day I hope I will," she whispered conspiratorially, then moved back. Miranda herself had been told that rumour by one of her friends after she'd gotten lost herself in her first year. It was kind of fitting that she passed it on to another woebegone student that was stuck in a similar situation.

As they shook hands Akari cheerfully said "Pleasure to meet you Miranda"
Then as Miranda started informing her about where they were, Akari's eyes followed to the window she gestured to, then peered out before she looked around and inspected her surroundings, trying to take note in her head of how it looked, and what was there, so she'd remember for next time that this was the second floor.
"Hogwarts has seven official floors, plus the towers. That total includes the basements and the ground floor.
Miranda told her. 7 floors? Oh my goodness... so many to remember She thought to herself.
"But don't forget, there are also rumours of at least one more floor that's kept secret from the majority of the student body. I've never been able to find it...but one day I hope I will,"
Akari's eyes filled with curiosity as she nodding paying attention to every word that came out of her mouth. A secret floor? How exciting... It would be so thrilling to find it...
"But how is that possible? how would one keep a whole entire floor a secret? She asked and furrowed her brows in confusion. Probably some type of magic... but still, it's a floor!

"I assume they do it through secret passages, though I've never seen a hint of any that lead there." Miranda was careful to put an emphasize on the fact that she hadn't found any leading to the secret floor. In truth, she had found one or two secret passages around the school on various exploratory pursuits, but none led to anywhere other than places she'd already been. Wherever the hidden floor was, it was hidden well, if it even existed in the first place.
Miranda moved farther away from the window, glancing around as she decided on what to show Akari next. The second floor was more of an "in-between" place, which meant it was mostly full of corridors, empty classrooms long forgotten by the students and staff, and stairwells. But if Miranda's memory served (which she was pretty sure it did) there was some kind of study hall nearby. Maybe Akari could benefit from knowing where that was.
"Let's head this way," she called, gesturing for the first year to follow as she started down a hallway. "I'll show you the Study Hall, and then we can move to the first floor, because that's were a lot of the classrooms are. I mean, they're all pretty scattered, but there's at least three or four there."

Akari was very intrigued by the information she just learned. She was extremely fortunate to have met Miranda, or who knows how long she would have gone without knowing about stuff such as a secret floor. They only just started the tour, meaning that there was probably plenty more nooks and crannies that she had never noticed/heard about before.
Akari stared out the window a little longer before realizing Miranda was starting to move down the next hallway towards a study room and was nodding as she was told about the next few places they would visit. Although she quickly started following, she was walking at a pace that was possibly a little slower than she should have and had to jog slightly every few seconds to keep up since she kept on getting sidetracked by the tapestries and interesting looking paintings that were mounted on the walls. She chuckled at how the people in the painting scenes were acting. It was like a whole entire different world displayed in front of her, but stopped her mind from wandering and promptly began walking again.
As the two continued walking it finally registered that she never asked Miranda what year she was in. She did not look that much older, perhaps a year or two?
"I realize I never asked you, which year you are in?"
She piped up and shot a questioning look over to her.

Miranda glanced over her shoulder, glad to see that Akari was keeping up, even if she did weave back and forth from following to inspecting different hallway decorations. Miranda didn't blame her - some of the stuff was pretty interesting to look at, after all.
They continued in this way for a short while, but it wasn't long before the first year asked another question. "Oh, I'm a second year," Miranda replied with an easy smile. "Not really much older than you. But it shows that it doesn't take too long to get an idea of the corridors and how to get from point A to point B."
She led them up one staircase, then down another not much farther on. Once you got to the higher levels, you found yourself climbing up and down much more often to reach your destinations. It was an annoying yet still inescapable part of living in Hogwarts. Easy passages were hard to come by, unless you worked hard enough at finding each and every secret passage. And that was not easy. At all.
"Here we are," Miranda announced not much later. She stepped aside to reveal a small, square room filled with desks and tables. She gestured at the hallway they stood in that led to the room. Several other doors - maybe six or seven of them - also branched off of it. "Each door leads to another room," she explained. "There are eight of them in total, and they all look pretty much the same."
