Easter break was in full swing and Aaron Jones was feeling pretty great about it. At first, he had been sad to learn that his mother wanted him to stay at the castle. There was a pandemic in the muggle world and she was worried about him catching it, thinking he was safer at school. Even though he tried to explain he was immune - being a wizard and all - she was insistent that he stay at the castle. After a couple days with no classes, Aaron had found that his new routine at Hogwarts was actually amazing. Hanging out with friends and slacking off on homework 'cause there were no professors checking up on them!

On Tuesday, he'd even been able to participate in his first ever Quidditch match with some other second-string and waitlisted players. Even though Hufflepuff lost, Aaron had scored his first ever goal and he was over the moon about it. Even two days later, he still had a huge dumb grin on his face whenever he thought about the rush of that moment. Aside from that match, Aaron had Sean and Lydia to keep him company. Even when they were busy, it wasn't hard to find something to do. Hogwarts was huge and he finally had time to explore it because no classes.

Right now, Sean was off recruiting a friend of his to help with their Secret Blossom Ball planning (an idea that was still very much in the works and not fully solidified at all). Lydia had disappeared after lunch, so Aaron found himself wandering around with no real purpose. Once he was in the Entrance Hall, his urge to go outside was quelled by the fact that it had begun to rain. The only bad thing about this break was that Scotland was prone to rainy weather during this time of year, meaning he had to find activities indoors. Not hard to do, it just wasn't ideal for an outdoorsman like Aaron.

A moment later, the twelve-year-old found himself wandering into the Great Hall. In between meals, students often hung out in here during the holidays - it was nicely decorated, and the tables often housed students playing games or studying. As Aaron walked inside, he looked around for any familiar faces he could say hi to. His dark eyes focused in on the Hufflepuff table and took notice of a boy sitting alone at a wizards' chess set.

Aaron recognized him as Jack Warren - a fellow first year boy in a different dorm. He was the boy who had tried to rescue Willow when the common room had caught fire - no wonder he'd made Prefect! Aaron made his way over to the boy and stopped on the other side of the chess set.

"Hey, Jack, right?" Aaron asked, offering a grin as he waved his hand in greeting. "I saw the bulletin about you making Prefect - I just wanted to say congratulations," he said, sticking his hand in his jeans pocket. It was in that moment that he recalled Jack was good friends with George Henry - the boy Aaron had tried to punch that fateful night in the common room. Good thing Aaron had apologized to him on Sunday - he didn't think that Jack would be very welcoming of his presence if he hadn't. Did Jack even knew about that incident, though? He'd been trapped under the floor at the time.

"Your break going well?" the dark-haired boy asked, still standing at the other end of the chess board rather than assuming he could sit. If he was invited to, he would gladly take the seat.

It was a different experience being in the great hall without the majority of the student body being in attendance. Jack sat on one of the long benches, his chin resting on his arm. The past few weeks had been a blur for the boy. First the fire, then becoming a prefect. Willow had actually burned him to a crisp, and his memory was somewhat hazy after that. He knew it was accidental, so no ill feelings were being harbored. Magic may be able to fix mundane injuries, but what it wasn't able to fix was the mental scar that the event would leave. In the boy's head, it was much like a gorge through a barren desert. But like most things, Jack would learn to forgive and forget. It was only a matter of time, but until then, it was all a lot to take in. A pen sat in front of the boy on the long table. Occasionally, he would let out a stream of breath, which forced the pen to steamroll its way across the wooden surface. The power of the wind! So amazing!

Whatever scars may lay under the surface, nothing could beat the mental scarring of the idea of boredom—the biggest beast in the mind of an ADHD infected child. Jack was a trouble maker at heart, but there was a seed growing somewhere deep down in him. That seed was a desire for responsibility. The boy would never truly admit it, but it was there. He could not stop that from growing. Maybe one day, Jack can be considered a fully functioning adult one day. Maybe.

Suddenly a friendly voice pulled the young Hufflepuff out of his boredom-induced pseudo coma. Much like a dog, his name always caught his attention. Looking, he saw a boy- a grinning boy. Did he recognize him from somewhere? Like a firecracker, recognition filled Jack's eyes. He didn't know the boy well at all, but Jack always remembered somebody who had offered him aid in the past. " Oh Hey-uh thanks. I'm honestly surprised that Doc chose me. Not gonna lie. You're...uh..." He snapped a couple of times, trying to come up with the fellow Hufflepuff's name. "Aaron?" he questioned, unsure if he had found the correct name. This was the guy who tried to punch George. Jack had heard the rumors of Aaron punching George, but most likely, if it weren't George who had sealed them under the floor, that would've been Jack's reaction as well.

"Oh, my break has been okay. Boring mostly. I'm honestly just trying to do something interesting." He shrugged nonchalantly. " I hope yours has been more exciting."

"Yeah, Aaron Jones," he confirmed, nodding with a smile. It wasn't too surprising that Jack had trouble remembering his name. They hadn't directly interacted before, aside from the common room fire. And even then, it's not like they spoke. Aaron had tried to extinguish some flames to help Jack rescue Willow, but then Jack fell through the weakened floor anyway. It had been a complete mess of a night.

The only reason Aaron knew Jack's name was because he had a really good memory for names and faces. He remembered almost everyone from the sorting ceremony. His memory of Jack was solidified because they were in the same house and all. His memory of people was something Aaron didn't even realize was a talent - he just knew that he never had trouble remembering a name, but others often seemed to need reminding.

"Actually, it has been! There was an unofficial Quidditch match against Gryffindor a couple days ago, and I got to play along with a lot of other second-string and waitlisted players," Aaron shared, smiling at the memory. "I scored my first ever goal," he added proudly. If there was one thing Aaron wouldn't be humble about, it was Quidditch. He took great pride in his natural flying ability, and he was always happy to show it off.

"Aside from that, though, not too much going on," he shrugged. The Secret Blossom Ball was not a fully-formed idea yet, and it was entirely possible that they wouldn't follow through due to lack of resources. Plus, it probably wasn't something he should go around talking to Prefects about... yet.

Aaron glanced again at the wizard's chess set nearby. "Wanna play?" Aaron asked, gesturing to it. He had nothing else to do, and Jack seemed friendly enough. After all, he was in the house of badgers, where loyalty and kindness were treasured.

"Ey, attaboy. I've heard the team is on the up and up!" The boy smiled as Aaron spoke more about how he scored his first-ever goal! "Mate! That is awesome! Maybe when you hit the first string, you can put in a good word for me" Jack had been late on the draw when it came to the quidditch signups, which had landed him directly on the waitlist. The prefect stuck out his fist towards the other boy.

Leaning back on the bench, Jack stretched his arms upwards. A series of small pops sound off into the air. With a satisfied exhale, the boy straightened himself back to an upright position. "Well that seems par for the course. I'm pretty glad nothing interesting is happening, considering what's been happening lately."

Following Aaron's gaze, the scarred boy followed it to the nicely set up chess set. "I mean sure! I've never actually played before, but I know how to play chess. Is it much different than actual chess?" The question was posed, as the boy pulled the board directly in front of the two boys. Jack was in for a surprise, considering the rather violent methods the pieces dispatched one another. "White or black? I don't really care which I get."

Aaron was more than happy to return the fist bump and accept Jack's praise. "Thanks! And I definitely will if I make it to first string! What position are you trying to play?" Aaron asked, excited to hear that Jack wanted a good word put in. It meant that he was also interested in being on the team, and maybe one day, they would play together!

Once Jack pulled over the chess set, Aaron took the seat across from him a bit excitedly. Today had been a pretty boring day, maybe learning wizard's chess would be fun! "Well, I've actually never played chess in general..." Aaron admitted. "Plus I'm not too familiar with wizard games, being a muggle-born and all... Maybe we should just play normal chess?" he suggested, looking back at the pieces. "I mean, these all look like the pieces needed for chess. I'll be black, since it's already on my side." Although he had never played, Aaron had seen his father play before, and the pieces looked familiar (he leaned in close to inspect), except-

A closer inspection revealed that these pieces had faces! They were intricately detailed! And- did one of them just blink? Aaron gasped and leaned back from the chess set, his brown eyes wide and seeking Jack's. "It blinked! The piece - all the pieces - I think they move!" His eyes looked back at the board, but none of them were moving. In fact - they were standing stone still. Had he imagined it? Aaron's face became confused and he looked back at Jack a bit apologetically. "I... guess I imagined it? Er- we can just go ahead and play. White goes first, right? I think I remember that from when my dad tried to teach me."
