Sending Letters
Melissa climbed up the stairs to get to the owlery. Her father sent way too many owls that she had to go there every two days. She was so glad the Ravenclaw dorm was in the same tower or else her legs would defiantly die. When she finally got there, she looked for a specific owl. It was a little snow owl and she always like to use it because she just felt a bond or something. "Hey, little one, you know where to send this letter right?" Melissa asked. Of course it knows! I've been sending so many letters to father, she thought. The little owl pecked her hand a few times and flew off. The pecks felt ticklish so Mel giggled a little. Then she turned around to go back to the dorm.
Halfway down the stairs, she saw someone she least expected. It was her friend, Penelope Alexander. "Oh hi, Penelope!" Melissa exclaimed. "Are you also sending an owl to your family?" It was such a surprise. Penelope never told her she was also going up to the owlery. Behind, Penelope, there was another girl. She was also from Ravenclaw because of her blue and white scarf. "Hi. Have I met you before?" Melissa asked the girl. She seemed familiar but Mel could quite remember where she was from.

Sending Letters
Mezryn dipped her quill back into her bottle of ink. School had been going for a while now, and she was sending a letter to her brother. Being the younger sibling, her brother was not yet at Hogwarts. Although it felt to Mezryn that he was at school with her. He sent her letters almost weekly, asking about how class was and what spells she'd learned. In one letter he even asked her to send a list of spells and a wand so he could try them (she didn't send either). The more letters she wrote, the more she wondered if either of her parents would send her any letters. So far she hadn't heard a word from them, and for some reason it bothered her. It was normal, she was used to it, so why did she feel so sad about it?
Pushing away the thought, she folded her now finished letter and placed it in an envelope. Stepping out of the common room, and went over to the Owlery, sealing the letter as she went.
"Ah! Sorry, Penelope!" said Mezryn as she accidentally bumped into her friend. Noticing she had an envelope in her hands, Mezryn continued on her way to the Owlery.
"Want to come with me?" she asked. Penelope nodded. With Penelope now in the lead, the two girls walked up the many stairs, trying to ignore the bitter cold air around them. No matter how many times she walked up here, Mezryn always forgot how many stairs there were. With the brisk wind making them even colder, it felt like forever before they reached the top. When they did, Mezryn saw there was another girl there.
"Hi. Have we met before?" asked the girl. She had long, wavy ginger hair and light green eyes. Mezryn thought for a moment. She had seen this girl before, but she hadn't ever talked to her.
"No, I don't think so. I'm Mezryn, but my brother calls me Mez. Who are you?" she asked, moving over to the masked owl she usually used. It’s feathers were mainly a tawny brown and it’s eyes were as black as coal. It’s wings were a dark brown and densely covered with spots. The same brown color on its wings made a circular ring around its face, and it’s beak was a light cream color. The owl gave a soft hooting noise as she gave the letter to it.

Penelope sealed her letter quickly on her way through the halls, wanting to walk up to the owlery before it became too hot. She placed the letter in the pocket of her robes, but she didn't notice that a corner of it was hanging out.
As Penelope walked through the halls of Hogwarts, she smiled at the coats of armour and waved to the students she knew. She was feeling cheerful and happy that morning, there wasn't anything particularly annoying or aggravating to be angry about.
The Hogwarts grounds were cold in the winter and warm in the summer. The days never got too hot, but Penelope still preferred the morning, where she could inhale the brisk air without the haziness taking over. The truth was she didn't like any degree over 60, so although the days were usually cool and clear, she would stay inside reading a book of some sort.
The early bird climbed her way up the smooth stone stairs, pausing for a moment to look over the edge. She felt as if she were on top of the world, at the same level as the birds. An owl's hoot reminded her that she really was at the same level as the birds, at least to some extent.
Penelope, deciding that today was as good a day as any to take a risk, leaned over the edge of the stair's railing and let a soft breeze ruffle her brown hair. She felt the knot of tension in her stomach soften, and her glistening eyes stung with tears as the wind pierced them.
Penelope felt for the letter in her pocket, and was surprised when it wasn't there.
"Quills and ink, it must've fallen down at the bottom," she muttered under her breath, but she wasn't all that annoyed. A little walk never did anyone any harm. In fact, the early bird rather enjoyed it.
Penelope walked down the stairs, found the letter on the very bottom step, stuck it back in her pocket, and began to walk back up the stairs once more.
Penelope couldn't resist another lean over the oak railing, and she peered down into the depths below. the Hogwarts grounds were beautiful as the sun was just rising. Penelope didn't even notice when Mezryn, Penelope's friend from the train, ran into her. She leapt up suddenly, and had to balance herself against the railing before she plunged to the ground.
"Ah! Sorry, Penelope!" Mezryn exclaimed. "Want to come up with me?" she asked. Penelope shook her head side to side.
"No thanks, Mezryn. I'm enjoying the view before it gets too hot. You go on ahead, I'll catch up in a moment." Penelope kept to looking over the railing taking her last breath of dawn. She then began her ascend up the stairs, and heard Mezryn talking to someone.
I wonder who else is up there? she said, and she started to walk up the stairs. Who she saw surprised her. It was Melissa, whom Penelope had met on the bay window in the Ravenclaw dorm.
"Good morning," she said cheerfully, and squeezed around Mezryn in the doorway. She called down her favorite owl, a tawny owl named Athena.
"Here you go, don't let this get lost. Send it right to Paris," Penelope whispered, and stroked the top of the owl's beak. She attached the letter quickly, and Athena flew away.
