"Agreed," Miranda replied, tucking her wand back into her robe for safe keeping. "I've spent quite enough time today being lost. It's be nice to get back on track."

She followed Cherri into the hall, glancing down the hallway they were now in. Unfortunately, no one was out and about, which meant they would have little in the way of outside help. She was so wrapped up in trying to remember whether this hallways looked familiar because it was the one of the fourth floor next to the Dueling Club, or because it looked quite similar to about a hundred different corridors in different parts of the school, that she only barely caught the end of Cherri's words. She was busy lamenting on how the paintings on the walls were no help, since she barely, if ever, paid attention to them. Growing up immersed in the wizarding world meant the moving images weren't exactly a new thing.

Miranda glanced up and was surprised to see Cherri striking at the wall with a stone. The other girl spoke, and Miranda hesitated before replying, instead hurriedly checking her pockets. "I normally do...but not today." She sighed loudly, but also made sure to memorize the symbol Cherri drew. Who knew, it might end up becoming useful later on.

As it turns out Miranda didn't have any paper or ink, however the stone would do just fine. Cherri wasn't really sure which way to go, but there were only two options, right or left. Cherri wondered how much of her afternoon had gone by, her homework was back in her dorm room, and it was unlikely she would be able to make a start on her assignments today, they would be lucky to find their way out before dinner.

"I've already gone around in a circle trying to find a way out of this corridor, so I'm not really sure which direction is the..." Cherri stopped talking, she thought she heard faint voices, but then she couldn't hear anything.

"Think I've been lost for too long, I thought I heard something. Anyways which direction do you want to try?"

Cherri started to sneeze, "The dust it's up my nose." She managed to say between sneezes. When she finally stopped sneezing she apologised.

"You don't suppose we're in some old secret passageway. Hogwarts has many hidden passageways, it would explain why we're so lost and why nobody else is around."

Again Cherri thought she heard something faint in the distance, maybe she wasn't hearing things after all.

"Is the what?" Miranda prompted, wondering why Cherri had trailed off like that. When the other girl explained why she'd stopped, Miranda was also silent for a moment, listening, since her hearing was better than an average humans. Unfortunately, she didn't hear a thing, and she said as much.

"Maybe we should try...that one?" she suggested, pointing at a branching corridor that seemed slightly larger than the rest. "If it's bigger, it might mean it connects to one of the main halls, since I seem to remember that many of the more-travelled halls tend to be larger." Miranda glanced over in surprise as Cherry began sneezing, and smiled apologetically. "That's fine. It's so dusty here that no one could ever blame you. Happens to the best of us."

When Cherri offered her possible solution to why no one was nearby, Miranda paused for several moments to consider it. "It's possible..." she began thoughtfully. "Although you tend to notice when you enter a secret passage, because half the time you have to do or say something pretty weird to open them up. But maybe someone left a door open and we got in by accident. So I guess we might be."

Miranda was right, secret passageways usually require some effort, people don't just usually wander into such passages. Her idea to try the larger passageway that branched off was good too. Cherri drew an arrow on the wall to mark the direction they were going.

The new passageway was an improvement, the pavement and walls were smooth, however, they were still dusty, but there wasn't a cobweb in sight. A knight stood against the wall it too was covered in dust and water dripped from leaks in the ceiling forming small puddles on the stone floor. What was causing the leaks, being on the lower levels, serval floors stood between them and the castle roof.

"It's certainly in better shape than the previous corridor, but still looks abandoned, suppose this corridor must lead somewhere, maybe back to the main floor?" Said Cherri.

As Cherri walked down the corridor, she noticed the roof leaked less and there was less dust present. The corridor became ever so slightly wider. Surely the exit would present itself soon. Cherri thought she heard someone on the other side of the wall.

"Did you hear that?" Asked Cherri, she was probably hearing things again, her mind playing another trick on her.

"Maybe," Miranda replied, although she didn't look too sure. "But if we can find some stairs, I can probably get us somewhere familiar. After all, the stairs are a bit easier to keep track of." As far as she knew, she could remember where each staircase led, but it was still possible there were a few she hadn't yet encountered. Possible, but not exactly likely.

The two walked for a while longer in silence, then Cherri spoke up again. Miranda cocked her head to the side and listened intently. This time she heard a quiet murmuring noise that almost sounded like when one listens to people speaking while underwater. "Yeah, I do now too." She paused, listening again. "It almost sounds like water...almost, but not quite. But why would there be water all the way up here? We're on the what, first or second floor? The Great Lake isn't anywhere close."

Miranda was acutely aware that they could both be simply hearing things that weren't truly there, driven by their desperation to reenter civilized areas. But if that was true, would they both be able to hear them at the same time? And besides, Miranda had been lost plenty of time before, and never had she heard things that weren't there...unless.... She glanced around suspiciously. It wouldn't be entirely impossible that an older student was somehow creating the noise for some kind of ridiculous joke. For the joker's sake, she hoped that wasn't the case.

It sounded like rushing water and muffled voices mashed together. Cherri wondered if they were hearing the merpeople, but as Miranda had pointed out they were nowhere near the Great Lake, though Cherri wasn't exactly sure which floor they were on.

"I was heading to the main floor from potions class when I noticed I was lost. Maybe if we follow the sound we can find our way out of here, only it sounds like the noise is directly above us. There must be a floor above us, and that means stairs!" Said Cherri excitedly thinking of Miranda's earlier idea and hoping that the next floor wouldn't be another abandoned part of the castle.

Cherri looked back, she could just make out the knight at the start of the corridor, they had walked a fair distance, surely the end of the corridor was near, and hopefully a flight of stairs too.

To Cherri's disappointment the end of the corridor had collapsed in on itself, she sighed. But then she noticed a large stone pillar blocking a doorway to her left. Cherri walked up to the door, and she managed to wiggle her arm past the stone pillar and turned the doorknob, the door creaked open. There was a tiny space just small enough to crawl through.

"Stairs! We'll have to crawl. After you?" Asked Cherri.

"Stairs would be incredibly helpful," Miranda agreed, brushing her fingers along the wall as she walked. It was a comforting, if a bit odd, little habit of hers. Books spines, walls, tree trunks. She tended to do it with all of them. "As long as we don't end up going around in circles, we're bound to find some eventually."

They walked a bit farther, but to Miranda's immense dismay, the corridor looked to have been collapsed in on itself. "How in the world...?" she murmured, appraising the blockage. How had something like this happened without anyone coming and fixing it up? Miranda was suspicious, but couldn't come up with any veritable answers.

At Cherri's exclamation, Miranda hurried over to check what she'd found. "Woah, I didn't know this was here," she said in surprise. "I wonder where it leads..." Her voice trailed off, then she got down on her hands and knees and started to crawl into the small space. Her robes would definitely need cleaning afterwards, but for now she was more focused on an exciting new discovery. This was so strange! And new!

The tunnel was quite dark, but Miranda didn't bother reaching for her wand to light it with a lumos spell. There was no way it could last long...right?

Suddenly it sloped downward steeply, and the previously rough floor became smooth. Miranda found herself skidding down it, and picking up speed as she went. Up ahead, a faint bright circle slowly began to grow bigger, most likely meaning the end was near...okay, that sounded morbid.

To her surprise, it abruptly levelled out and she found herself tumbling onto a soft pillow of...grass? Blinking, Miranda peered around, her hand over her eyes to block out the almost blinding bright light. They were on the grounds.

OOC: Maybe the collapsed hall is an illusion made by older students as a prank, since I'm not sure how a corridor could collapse withought causing huge damage throughout the school
