It was a short walk to the owlery from the Ravenclaw common room. Cherri pulled out the letter from her robes as she reached the top of the owlery. It was a cold day, the cobblestone floor was icy and the wind gusted through the hollow stone windows.

The owls were all huddled together for warmth, Cherri approached a snowy owl, and held her letter out, the owl looked at Cherri and turned away showing Cherri his tail feathers. Perhaps it was too cold for the owls, but a Barn owl stood tall, ruffled her feathers and held her leg outright allowing Cherri to attach the letter to the owls leg, Cherri gave the owl a treat before she took off to the air.

Cherri looked out into the view from the tower, it was early, fog layed low on the ground below her. She could see the forbidden forest from the tower and the quittich pitch, it was all anyone ever talked about, quittich, a game played on broom sticks, though Cherri did more falling off than flying in class.

Cherri was about to leave when she heard someone else coming up the stairs. "Oh hey, sorry I didn't expect anyone else to be here, I can leave if you like?"

Ellen climbed up the staircase, wide-eyed with wonder. Looking and staring at everything around her. The floating candles. The talking portraits. The students walking to and fro of all ages. Some of the older ones holding hands, fingers interlocked. Others walking in groups. It was like being back in school in so many ways, but this time around she didn’t have her friends with her. She didn’t have that little net of support she could always depend upon, which made things more than a little scary.

Still. She had a letter to send. And although going back to the Ravenclaw common room seemed tempting, considering how close to the owlery it was, she needed her mother to know what House she’d managed to get into. The news was sure to elate her.

She’d written the letter a few hours prior, a couple of days after the ceremony. Only reason she hadn’t written it earlier was because of how busy she suddenly was. And she thought middle school was going to be tough. And that thought brought her back to her friends. They would all be going to the same school and even though glad she was in Hogwarts, she couldn’t help feel a little out of sorts. She barely knew anyone, and all her friends were in a different world.

She couldn’t even speak to them on the things she experienced here. Maybe a few things. Like if she’d met any cute boys or saw something funny. But anything magical and they’d either think she’d gone a little insane or she’d end up in a lot of trouble. Both of which were bad.

Pushing those thoughts down however, she decided to be positive. To be open minded and let things go as they will. No use in worrying.

She walked up to the owlery and opened the door, nearly running into a girl. “Oh, no it’s fine,” she stammered in response, “I was just sending a letter home.

“Uhm.. I’m Ellen, nice to meet you.” She held out a hand a little awkwardly.

Cherri was pleased the girl Ellen was not bothered by Cherri's present, though she seemed somewhat awkward. Ellen was a Ravenclaw too and appeared to be about Cherri age, but she wasn't sure. She thought Ellen looked familiar, maybe she'd seen her at the sorting or in the common room she wasn't sure. Regardless she shook the girl's hand and introduced herself.

"My name is Cherri Walker, pleased to meet you. I too was just delivering a letter home, to my parents, my mother promised to tell me a bit about her time here at Hogwarts, but only after I had started to settle into Hogwarts. How are you finding Hogwarts." Asked Cherri politely.

Cherri started to pat a barn owl, giving the owl a treat, she knew they weren't really pets, but she missed having a pet of her own. The family estate had horses, hunting dogs, owls for her mother's work, and her cat Peper, which she missed, wasn't fond of travel.

Cherri wondered how muggle-borns managed to get letters home to their parents, she guessed muggle postage wasn't an option, their parents would merely have to learn to cope with owls delivering messages every week, she wondered how they would explain this to the neighbours.

She smiled wider when Cherri shook her hand. She took a few more steps into the owlery to get a better view, looking around to appreciate the tower-like structure. With all its alcoves, support beams and layered levels. And all the owls. The sheer number of them, flitting from one place to another and hooting about caused her to become a little nervous, since she’d never been around this many owls before. But seeing how Cherri was seemingly fine around them helped in calming her.

And, as one would expect, there were a lot of owls in the owlery. Brown ones, white ones, ones in different shaded feathers of greys and blacks, and in all sorts of shapes and sizes. What surprised her the most were their legs. She didn’t at all expect to see owls with such long legs. She’d always assumed they were like other birds, with featherless and relatively short legs; but they were retractable and it was highly curious.

Turning her attention away from them, she smiled back at Cherri. “I find it strange,” she said, “not in a bad way. Just different. My parents wanted me to grow up around muggles so being part of the magical world is all new to me. What about you? How are you finding it?”

She asked the question as she walked over to one of the owls and tentatively approached it. She was surprised to see that it accepted her easily and didn’t flinch at her nervousness. Looking into its eyes, she saw the intelligence therein, and Ellen almost felt as if the owl were seeking to comfort her, to ease her nerves when it hooted and slowly walked onto her hand. She tied a letter to its foot and the owl flew off.

Cherri was surprised by Ellen's answer, her upbringing seemed not unlike Cherri's own. Ellen had asked her how she was finding Hogwarts. The classes were so different to anything else she had experienced. Potions in some ways seemed like following a cooking book or conducting a science experiment, and history of magic was a lot like her muggle schooling history classes. The other classes though all involved performing spells. The houses and talking paintings, that was something she could get use to.

"It's certainly different, sometimes I feel as though I'll wake up and this will all have been nothing more than a dream. My mother is actually a witch, she works at Mungo but my father is a muggle. I was raised as a muggle and went to a muggle school. I had no idea magic existed, until my mother told me everything last year. It was a lot to take in. What is your dorm-like, made any friends?" Asked Cherri.

Cherri feed a snowy owl a snack and stroked the owl's beautiful feathers, she really must get herself an owl she thought. The owl nibbled at her fingers, "I'm sorry but I haven't any more treats." Said Cherri. The owl looked at her disapprovingly. Cherri shrugged in response.
