Nadia stared glumly through the window. Her parents had already left, of course. There was no way her dad could be late for his meeting.

When they had went through that wall…there had to be some explanation. Some kind of illusion? Mechanical machine, pulling the bricks away just in time? The people around seems to not notice it. Just another thing she’d have to add to her list of things to work out. She leaned back. It couldn’t be real. Magic, wizards? Nadia was faced with the harsh reality of the real world at a young age. She had no time to believe in magic. But why were her parents eating the whole thing up?

In the past, they struggled to get where they were. They were cautious of their money, and scams. They wouldn’t just believe a mysterious old man who comes up to their front door and says that she’s a wizard. It had to be some scheme. A surprise? Had she forgotten her birthday? But she knew her parents. They were much to busy, and somebody had to watch over her siblings. Hiring a nanny? She had to be in trouble. There was no other explanation. But part of her wanted to believe it. The magic. The wand. But she knew it wasn’t real. Was it...?

She looked into the hall. People were scurrying through. Some looked older than Nadia. How long had they been doing this? Falling for it? Would they have noticed? She sulked back, tucking her legs onto the chair. She took her bag off and set it next to her. She didn’t trust putting it into the cabinet above. It might be another one of their mechanisms. She sighed, looking up.

On the train from Manchester to King’s Cross, Sarah was traveling with her mother. They spoke along the way, excitedly sharing their anticipation. Both of Sarah’s parents are muggles, so this world is entirely new to both of them. Somehow, she felt both nervous and excited.

When she got her letter on her birthday, Sarah didn’t know if it was real. The professor that delivered it explained everything to her and her mom, and eventually led her through Diagon Alley for school supplies. Since then, she’s been absorbing as much as possible in her magical textbooks.

An announcement interrupted her thoughts, and after saying goodbye she grabbed her bag and hugged her mom. “I promise I will write!” exclaimed Sarah as she stepped off the train. She had no trouble finding platform 9 3/4 as she got off at platform 6. It was fairly crowded, yet Sarah knew exactly what to do. Bag in hand she sprinted for the brick wall between platforms 9 and 10.

As if she stepped through a doorway, she arrived at the platform, and was staring at Hogwarts Express in awe. Taking a moment to admire the scene, she glanced across the crowd. Witches and wizards, some dresses in their school gowns and others more casually. There was an excited buzz in the air, and the sounds of families farewells and pets of all kinds. She made her way to the train careful not to bump into anyone.

Inside was just as chaotic, students with luggage squeezing through the aisle. Sarah moves through the crowd and found a room with space. Sliding open the door she peeked inside, where a girl that looked about her age was sitting. Sarah smiled and plopped down across from her.

“Hello, do you mind if I take a seat here?” she asked. Removing her bag from her shoulder, she reached in and pulled out her Book of Spells. It had paper bookmarks sticking out all over. “Have you read any of your textbooks yet? It’s pretty fascinating. I’m still new to all this. Oh, my name is Sarah by the way! Sarah Lane.”

Nadia looked up at the girl. “No, no, it’s fine.” She tucked her bag closer, watching as the girl pulled out her books. “I’m Nadia. Nadia Arser. So um.” she reached into her bag, pulling out a random book, observing it. Magical Drafts and Potions, the cover read.

“Do you actually believe in this stuff?” she raised an eyebrow.

Of course she does, she looked down, putting the book back in. She probably had a lovely life, living happily, waiting for a magical opportunity like this. That’s what all the kids thought, when they were probably just being scammed out of their money. But Nadia wasn’t like the other kids. While the girls at her school dreamed about meeting unicorns and magical fairies in the woods, she had to take care of 3 toddlers at the same time. The most she could dream about was the day she could move out, and even that sounded crazy.

She tugged at the end of her sleeve. When she was driving to the station, her parents would say the school would give her ‘good social skills’ she thought it was crazy. She just wasn’t a people person. They shouldn’t even be trying, it was their fault she didn’t have ‘good social skills’ she looked back up at the girl.

So much for first impressions, she thought bitterly.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Nadia Arser!” Sarah said with a smile. “Is this your first year coming to Hogwarts too? I’m pretty nervous... but excited to see how big the school is in person.” She smiles at the thought of being able to live in a castle for the school year.

Opening the book she had pulled out, she began to read the first page she opened to. “The levitation charm, wingardium leviosa, is a charm used to make objects fly or levitate,” she read aloud with raised eyebrows. “No, I don’t believe it one bit.” She replied.

“I’ve been trying out some of these spells with no luck. I’m actually beginning to think that they chose the wrong person!” Sarah giggled. But she knew that some part of her was magic. Even as unbelievable as this was she remembered the times she accidentally preformed magic. Those moments were just as ridiculous to her, but has been happening more often ever since she turned 7.

After reading for awhile, Sarah gave up trying to figure out the secret to levitation. “I can’t wait to learn this one in class.” She sighed. There were so many things for her to learn and Sarah felt pretty overwhelmed. She looked out the window at the moving hills and forests and imagined this world full of magic. All sorts of creatures and spells all unknown to her.

“Where are you from? I took the train in from Manchester. It was pretty far.”

She sighed. “Yeah, first year.”

She had never actually preformed magic. The sound of levitation and magic sounded crazy. But a feeling in her stomach told her she had. Things popping up right where she needed them, lights flickering. Cabinets opening when she swore she didn’t lay a finger on them. But that wasn’t magic. Was it? She shook her head. She was normal. But until she got to this school, she couldn’t confirm. A small part of her wanted it to be true, and she decided to give it a chance. She decided just to go with it.

“Sorry. I’m just not the believer type. Supernatural stuff, magic. Never really had to to believe it. But I suppose I’ll give it a chance,” she smiled. “I’m from London, by the way. Up north, near Enfield.”

She looked out the window then back at the girl and her book. “Er-“ she pulled out the same book. “I haven’t actually read any of these,” she laughed with a sigh. “I sort of read them as bedtime stories to my siblings, or, to myself, when I needed something a little magical in my life.” She flipped through the pages. “I tried learning the words. I memorized a few, when my brother would make me play wizards with him. Have you done any? At all?”
