First Year Entrance 2020-2021

It was the night before a full moon, and Marcus Iwasaki was on edge. He was paler than normal, and in a much more irritable mood. Being put in charge of welcoming the first years was not the ideal situation on a night like this, but he hadn't questioned the order. It was part of the job.

As a sea of students disembarked from the Hogwarts Express, a vast majority of them veered off towards the walkway to the castle. That left the shorter children standing around unsure of what to do or where to go. Marcus took a deep breath, wrinkling his nose slightly as the smell of train smoke filled his nostrils.

"Incoming first years, come this way! Leave your luggage behind!" the man called out, gesturing for the kids to come to him. His words would reach every first year, and as they made their way towards him, he would lead the group of children to the edge of the Great Lake. The castle wasn't visible from this particular spot, and the lake ahead looked perfectly still and black. The water was reflecting an image of the moon, and the sight made a shiver travel down Marcus' spine. This is something the children would not notice. He quickly turned his attention to the boats and the beautiful woman standing beside them. With a courteous nod to his colleague/friend, he turned away from the lake to face the crowd of eleven-year-olds.

"Welcome. My name is Mr Iwasaki. I am the Hogwarts Caretaker, meaning I maintain the castle and keep order within its walls. This is Professor Jensen," he then gestured to the woman at his side, offering her a small smile, although it seemed a bit strained. "She is the Head of Slytherin House, and is joining me in welcoming you all to the school. We will travel across the lake in these boats, and you'll get your first look at the castle," he finally gestured to the magical boats lined up on the lake shore, waiting for occupants.

"Only FOUR to a boat," he added, before the children got any ideas. None of them seemed to move, and Marcus resisted the urge to roll his amber eyes. "Well, go on! Choose a boat so we can get going!" he ordered, his irritation adding to his already intimidating presence.

Marcus glanced at Nora warily after the little outburst. It was the moon's presence putting him on edge - hopefully she understood that. He had a feeling that's why she had volunteered to join him in the first place. While his eyes would normally linger on the blonde, they now shifted to the sky, briefly focusing on the enormous glowing orb above them. It was a beautiful sight to most, but not to him. Soon enough, his eyes lowered back to the children, watching them take their spots on the boats.

A note that at the time of this thread, Marcus was caretaker of the castle. He has since been promoted to Head of Ravenclaw.
Marcus' Intimidation is in effect.
It is a sentiment that enters people's hearts when they are in your presence. They feel dis-ease when you are present, even if the interaction is casual or even friendly.

Today was a special day for first years. They were making their way to the castle for the first time, sure. But they also got to see the Head of Slytherin donning her witch's outfit, which was a rare sight. Of course, this was likely not a priority for any of them - nor something they would even realise because most of them would not have meet her before today. However, she knew. Even her usual witch hat and black robes were decorated and personalised to be more her. Fresh flowers were attached to her hat, with a belt around her robes to pull them in neatly and show off her waist. It was clear that appearances mattered to her. She maintained a pristine look, clean and beautiful at all times. At least, she would attempt to do that. Over the past year, she had slipped on a few occasions. But this was a new year and thus, a new chance to make a new impression.

The silver haired professor was not really one for words. She preferred the sound of silence. It was far more comfortable and soothing to her ears. Standing besides the Caretaker, she allowed him to dominate the introductions. All she did was nod her head politely as he introduced her, as though to greet the first years that had gathered around them.

There was little less she bothered to say or do, keeping a neutral expression on her face and standing still otherwise. She was not really here to entertain the students, after all. In an ideal world, she would be waiting in the feast at the Great Hall and preparing for the Sorting Ceremony that would take place as soon as the first years arrived.

Alas, she was here because of Marcus. She knew how the moon cycle would affect him, especially one day before the full moon. Of course, she would never say this. Her blank expression was emotionless, cold and often deemed as scary. The duo were likely far more intimidating than they should have been. They might not have been the best to welcome the fresh batch of first years. However, she was just not the warm friendly professor. That had never been her, that would likely never be her. But... perhaps she ought to try, since he was clearly suffering. That much she knew when he barked out some orders. Welp.

Her silvery blue eyes locked with his as he glanced over. Her expression softened a little, a small soft smile tugging on her lips as though to say it was fine. It would be alright. Turning back to the students, she spoke up, "Be careful when climbing into the boats. We'll embark once everyone has settled in," Her tone of voice was quiet but she spoke with clarity as she moved her hands behind her and waited patiently for them to get into their chosen boats. It was not a hard decision but it was a good chance to meet some potential new friends.

If any of the students tried to approach the boat nearest to them, she would nudge them towards a different one with a look that told them they did not want to choose that boat. Whilst it looked like a glare and came off cold, it was actually for their own sake. Marcus was not going to be in the mood to converse with students during the whole journey - and she was more than happy to sit in silence too. Honestly, no student would enjoy sitting in a boat with the two of them.

Starlee heard the call of the large man and knew he should follow him over to the boats. She was a very nervous first year. Her father was a wizard, but he had gone to Ilvermorny since he originally lived in the United States. They moved to Scotland shortly after he married her muggle mother, as his parents didn't approve. Because of all of this, she had no background of what Hogwarts was like. To top it all off, her older brother was a squib, so that left her to fend for herself in this new school.

Her trip on the Hogwarts Express was short. Since she was in Edinburgh, she had no need to go all the way to London just to take the long journey back up, the train simply made another stop there. When she finally got on the train, she was fairly introverted and kept to herself, keeping her head down in a book. She wasn't actually reading it though, she simply was thinking about how maybe she would get up the nerve to talk to others in her compartment, which ultimately never happened. This was partially because she had to find a seat in an already packed train, which was certainly difficult, and it seemed other students were already making friends without her. But this time, this time things would be different. She was going to talk to one of those other new kids, she wasn't the only one in this situation!

Starlee thought all of this while she followed Mr. Iwasaki and Professor Jensen. While the man seemed nice, Starlee felt some sort of unease as they walked over to the little group of boats. Starlee was first and she quickly hopped into Boat #2, hoping someone would follow her.

Jess stepped off of the Hogwarts Express, looking around herself as a loud voice boomed out instructions for the students to follow him and leave their luggage behind. Reluctantly letting go of her trunk, Jess walked over to where an adult wizard, presumably a professor, was standing next to a beautifully dressed witch. The girl's mouth opened into a little 'o' as she took in the female professor's outfit, complete with a bundle of flowers pinned onto her hat, a belt tied around her waist, and the silvery hair that flowed down her back. Did all wizards dress like that? If so, Jess was definitely screwed. She had never been particularly one to dress nice, or to know what clothes would fit her well and look good together in combination. At the sound of the male wizard's voice, however, Jess's head snapped back to look at him.

Oh, she thought to herself as the man talked. So he's the Caretaker, and she's the head of Slytherin... scary. In truth, Jess felt rather more intimidated by the both of them than she probably should have been, but then again, this was her first year at Hogwarts, so her nerves were already running high. At the Caretaker's instructions to find a boat to sit on, Jess looked around, trying to see smiles or laughs and determine if he was kidding. There was no way they were going to ride across the lake in these tiny boats, were they? But all around Jess, students stayed serious, turning to each other as they tried to find people to share the boat ride with. Jess sighed to herself. In the rush that had been getting off of the Hogwarts Express, she had lost the kids that she had ridden with. Looking around now, Jess couldn't spot anyone that she knew. Damn it.

Looking around, Jess could see that the boats were already starting to be filled up with eager-looking students. If she didn't get into a boat quick, the girl would be left having to scramble into the last possible slightly-empty boat, and she had a feeling that the people already occupying the boat wouldn't like that very much. Spotting a boat with only one other person in it (Starlee), Jess figured that this was her chance. Pus, the girl looked alone, and not as if she waiting for some other friends to join her. Jess walked over to the boat and stopped by its edge, hovering uncertainly. "Hi," she said shyly. "Can I sit here?"

Starlee looked up from her seat at the girl who started talking to her. Starlee, still a little nervous from trying to meet new people, said "Uh, yea sure..." in a light Scottish accent, sounding not quite sure of herself. She couldn't believe how unsure she sounded in her reply, was she trying to not make friends?

Starlee took note of the girl and watched as she clambered into the boat. She seemed nice enough, yet Starlee had always had trouble making friends. She desperately tried to think of how to start a conversation with the girl; maybe this is what she should have been doing on the train ride instead of wallowing in her nervousness to try to talk to new people. Finally, she came up with a question. Well, perhaps the simplest of questions, but hey, she couldn't just stay silent. She looked up at the girl and asked, "So, uh, what's your name?" She choked a little on her words and quickly fired off a round of nervous questions before letting the girl answer her first. "What do you know about Hogwarts? Do you have any siblings here? Have you heard anything from other people?" She realized this may come across a little too foreword, and she bit her tongue as she waited for the girl's response.

From the moment he left the Hogwarts express, he was uneasy. New environment, a chance to meet new people who aren't your sisters, more esteemed wizards who work at Hogwarts so it'll help you get an idea on what you want to do when you're older, just like his sisters.

The voice of his mom's voice talking about his eventually time in Hogwarts was nice, but she made everything into a lesson of the future or the constant bringing him up with his sisters. It was annoyingly painful to hear every time but even now, when alone with a swarm of other first-years, he felt like he would want to hear it than deal with being alone in a school.

However, not realizing what was happening as he was idly standing around. A voice boomed and order the first years to leave their cases of clothing and such. Before Remi could wonder who is going take their packing vassals, he felt odd. As if without realizing, his breath seemed a bit more spaced out and everything was getting stuffy.

Remi blinked, noticing in his view that one of the adults, a Hogwarts caretaker, who goes by Mr. Iwasaki. Something was un-natural about him, something how he showed himself as the Alpha, the chief made Remi uncomfortable as with Remi's father and mother, they weren't really bossy and actually someone you can go up to and talk.

But Iwasaki? He was different.

Remi wanted to know more about this caretaker that was catching his eye more than the lady with the pretty flower Witch outfit.

As he walked with two girls, both first-years, like himself. Not talking right away as he has gotten onto the boat with the others, trying to think what House be might be in.

But being uncomfortable for not introducing himself, as he didn't ask to get on the boat with the two girls, he made it his chance to do so,
"How are you both doing? I'm Remi."
He gave a little smile,
"Sorry for just hopping onto your guys' boat like that. I forgot to ask, hehe."
He gave a small giggle but really, it was more of an excuse for him to keep on the Caretaker, Mr. Iwasaki, at a closer distance.

Of course, he knew the questions weren't aimed at him but he didn't care, knowing that they're all first-years, it would be fine to do introductions!
"Well, I know Hogwarts has a bigger magical population, non-human ancestry people like the were-wolves, Dhampirs, uh - half-giants."
He said really casually,
"Heard about it on the train here. Real wild stuff for the Muggle-borns here. Even for me, it's odd. As for siblings, got three older sisters. All meanies."
He sighed before looking back at Mr. Iwasaki,
"You guys know what his deal is? He looks mean-mean."
He asked the girls, pondering,
"He keeps looking at us like we did something bad."
He snorted, while the idea of getting caught by him and his slightly scary caretaker made Remi's stomach do a flip.

Sorry, the boat's full
Leaving the Hogwarts Express made me feel happy. I was sit alone in a creepy compartment and every second made me really queasy.
I walked over to the Great Lake and found 5 boats and for some reason, no one picked three other boats.
I walked over to the second boat that first year people like me were going to. This was gonna be awkward being the only quiet person that looks like he's plotting your demise. I thought of how beautiful and overwhelming this place is.
I walked into the boat with two girls and a guy. I had a very low degree of people skills so I didn't even introduce myself. I just hopped in the boat.
I looked at an adult with near the first boat who was looking at the moon, like he would turn into a werewolf.
As I entered the other people in the boat looked at me. I wasn't nervous, but hey, neither was I an extrovert.
As I sat, I realized I had to at least say something.
"Hey, I'm just gonna sit here, thanks"
I didn't even give them a chance to reply, I just sat down.
"Wow, this is amazing"
I looked at the huge castle just on the other end of the lake.
I began to wonder what house I would be in. I was smart, so maybe Ravenclaw, I was daring, so maybe Gryffindor. Well, only time will tell.
I looked to the other kids expecting them to respond but definitely not hoping it

Jess nodded gratefully as the girl said that she could join her boat and climbed in, stumbling a bit over the edge of the boat as she went. She straightened up, now blushing slightly, and sat down in the boat on the bench behind the girl's. She looked up as, without preamble, a boy climbed into the boat behind her and sat down as well, then answered the questions that the girl had rapid-fired at Jess.

Wait- did the boy just say that there were werewolves, half-gaints, and some other sort of magical creature that Jess had never heard of at the castle? What? Wasn't this a school for wizards and witches, and not a whole variety of scary things that could kill the rest of the students? Jess shook her head at the boy's question, then, realizing that there was finally silence in the boat, decided to speak up.

"I don't know. Maybe he just doesn't like first years?" Jess suggested. "Or he might not have wanted this job... the water seems pretty cold right about now. I don't think any teacher would really want to cross it." Jess herself wasn't particularly too fond of the idea of crossing the lake in this dark. Looking back up at the boy, Jess furrowed her brow in confusion. "Um, what did you mean by half-giants and Dam- Damp- whatever the other thing you said was? Are they really at Hogwarts?" She paused for a second, realizing. "Wait- those things really exist?"

Her head darted back up from the two kids already in the boat as another boy boarded and informed them he was going to join them in the boat. Okay, Jess thought to herself. I guess that's one way to join a boat... The boy was cute, but Jess tried not to think about that or stare at him too much as he took a seat. He had a light accent, Scottish probably, as did the girl. Jess hoped she didn't have an accent, but since she had lived in New York for most of her life, she highly doubted that she sounded normal to everyone around her. She remembered that the girl had asked her some questions too, and looked back at her to answer.

"My name's Jess by the way, and I'm a Muggle-born only child, so I don't have any siblings either here or at home." Now that she was surrounded by lots of kids who all didn't know each other and at least one other girl who seemed somewhat nervous to meet everyone, Jess's own nerves were starting to ebb away. "I don't know too much about Hogwarts, but a kid I sat with on the train here said that whatever biases people have about the school Houses aren't true, and lots of people have friends in all the Houses. I guess I do too, if you count the people I met in Hogwarts summer camp as my friends." Realizing that the other kids in the boat probably didn't care about her friends or whether she went to summer camp or not, Jess stemmed off, looking down at her feet.

Robert was excited. Nervous, but quite excited. He was about to be immersed in a totally new environment, full of magic and opportunity, similar to what he'd read about in books, but also totally different. Hogwarts would be a chance to meet new people, learn new things, and oh yeah, do magic! He walked off the Hogwarts Express and started to follow the rest of the crowd. After all, most of them had done this before and probably knew where they were going. However, he then heard a booming voice say, "Incoming first years, come this way! Leave your luggage behind!"

Startled, Robert looked around for the source of the voice. He realized that it was coming from a man called (as he would later learn) Mr Iwasaki. Robert saw that the Caretaker was standing next to a woman he recognized as Professor Jensen. Robert mentally shrugged a bit and veered off from the rest of the crowd to join the much smaller group of students gathered around the two adults. He thought about waving to the Head of House, but the blank look on her face didn't exactly scream welcoming.

Mr. Iwasaki explained that they would be traveling across the lake to Hogwarts, bringing the first-years' attention to the five boats floating on the water. "Be careful when climbing into the boats. We'll embark once everyone has settled in," Professor Jensen added to Mr. Iwasaki's introduction. Robert saw that a couple of the boats already had some first years in them, so he boarded one of the empty ones. Robert wasn't great at starting interactions with people, but he hoped that someone else would join his boat and start them for him.

Akari hopped off the express and stood still and was inspecting her surroundings with wide eyes, but then was nearly swept up in the crowd of students that were rushing and scurrying around the platform. She heard a deep voice call out something about first years but hadn’t completely heard due to all the commotion around her.
She tried her best to squeeze past all the students and make her way towards the loud voice then was relived to see other new students that looked her age on the other side.

She stopped for a moment to take in all the sights, for this was something she’d been waiting for since she was a young witch. The Great Lake shimmered, and the reflection of the moon ripped in the waves. She took a deep breath and sighed softly at the lovely view then squinted into the distance trying to see if she could catch a glimpse of the castle from where she was standing.

She continued gazing for a few more moments before forcing herself to pay attention to the instructions so she would know what to do.
She looked over to the students that were filing into the boats and quickly followed to make sure she’d get a place.

She walked up to a boat that there was only one other child and then put on a friendly grin and asked
“Hey, can I join you?”
