Vast Waters
Penelope sat, gazing out at the vast water in front of her. The Great Lake at Hogwarts was nothing compared to the ocean, but she had rarely visited the ocean, so to her, the lake was just as breathtakingly wonderful.
She could smell the scent of freshwater, and beneath it, the scent of magical creatures.
Over her time at Hogwarts, Penelope had noticed that magical creatures smelled slightly different than muggle creatures. Although she was pure-blood, she hadn't had many run-ins with magical creatures, other than the occasional household pesk that was bound to show itself once in awhile.
Penelope had a reason for sitting out by the lake this fine evening, and it wasn't just because she wanted to watch the sunset. She wanted to see if she could catch a glimpse of the giant squid which was rumored to be in the great lake.
Although the giant squid was known to bask on the shore in the warm months, there had been barely a glimpse of it throughout the whole summer, at least to Penelope. She was guilty of spending most of her summers indoors, reading books and lounging around. The most she ever really walked the Hogwarts grounds was to go to herbology, although she wanted to change that now.
The young Ravenclaw eventually sat up, turning her back to the lake and looking back at the castle.
They're probably eating dinner now, she thought. She didn't want to give up her watch, for the squid might show itself and then decide it was time he turned in for the night.
Penelope sat back down, and although her stomach rumbled with the feeling of hunger, she kept her gaze firmly fixed on the great lake. She would think of anything but food. Of course, her mind being the strange but wonderful thing it was, thought of all of her favorite foods including cooked carrots covered in gravy and sugar quills.
Behind her steady determination, she felt a pang of amusement. She often felt this when she reflected on what she was doing, like a mother does to their small child. It was rather strange, really, but she didn't know that, or quite possibly she didn't care.
Only the occasional ripple would tell her that something was really there beneath the lake's large amount of water. She exhaled slowly and started to think of another plan, because obviously sitting here and doing nothing would not help anyone or anything, including herself.
Penelope crunched her foot into the pebbles beneath her, and picked out a good rock. She found more of it's kind, not too big, but definitely larger than a pebble, and began to shape them in the shape of the giant squid. (At least, what she thought to be the shape of the squid) When she had finished it was a rather contorted, strange version of the squid, but to a bystander, it would obviously be one.
After a few moments of looking at her creation, she turned back to the lake, the setting sun now blinding her as it reflected off of the water.
Ouch! she thought, and turned her gaze back to the castle. It wouldn't quite be time to go back to the castle yet, but the young Ravenclaw was tired and she yawned widely.
Squid or sleep? she thought, and then decided squid. She stood up and walked over to a tree, sitting behind it so that she wouldn't be clearly visible, accept to the most keen eye.
I wonder if anyone else is out tonight? she thought drowsily, and her eyelids began to droop. The lake was just...to...peaceful.
