A steeled brown gaze swept the board as the Queen scanned the white team's ranks for her next victim. Her previous failure had been irksome, even if she refused to let it show, and to repeat the performance would be simply disgraceful. But to make her mark, she'd have to act fast, since people had already begun making their next moves. It was probably a good thing that things were running so quickly, as the Thunderbird lacked the focus and logic to plan out which spell to use and the possible consequences of such. After all, she practically operated on spontaneity.

"Flipendo!" Karilyna directed her spell towards a redheaded girl a few squares away. Though both the wand motion and incantation seemed right, and light made its spiraling way out of her wand, the girl managed to dodge in time. Ugh. This whole duelling business really shouldn't have been this difficult. Perhaps she could chalk it up to lack of experience or nerves, but whatever the case was, this was slowly getting worse and worse. She could certainly handle a miscast, or perhaps loss, if it had to come to that, but she'd honestly ought to do better. So, try harder she would do.

Johannes made it out of the quickly-dissipating smoke without a hitch and a good two-lungfuls of fog to make up for it- for that he was grateful, there was very little visibility in there and he would have never seen a spell coming his way if he tried. But now that he was out in the open, coughing into the collar of his shirt, it was very clear that things were not going well. Well damn.

At least he was covering Alexei from one side, but that was the only decent thing about this whole fiasco. From the corner of his eye, it didn't look that their team-named "queen" seemed very happy about how things were going either. Johann didn't blame the dude. Awe man, what was there to do? He had already placed himself on defence and he hadn't been able to do anything productive since that really bad decision he made to smokescreen himself, all there really was left to do was attack. Attack, but who? What a predicament.

Well... his plan hadn't worked so far. He moved spaces which wasn't helpful but he thought it would help him avoid being flamed again. Boy was he wrong. That girl just wouldn't leave him alone. Her wand was a match and he was the kindle. The boy kind of glowered seeing that no one on either side had really taken as much damage as he had. Not to mention his clothes were ruined and his energy was pretty low. The blonde boy's confidence also wavered due to him only being able to cast 1 successful spell that seemed to not even affect the girl in the slightest. Right now he was pouting but he'd have to ask her later about her amazing spell casting.

He looked over at their Queen and nodded his head slowly, understanding the plan. "Here goes nothing, let's try to stay alive for a few more rounds yeah?" The boy joked lightly, but the words seemed hollow as he gripped his wand with less of reassurance as before.

Chess Combat, Game TWO

Team Black had to repeat their blitzkrieg, hoping to get more impact from it this time. One spell hit this time (Karilyna's), quite hard upfront to be honest. Well, two spells, basically: the massive assault resulted into Katrina's backfiring from trying to dodge them, so she hit herself with her own spell as well, considering the fire burnt her skin a bit before fading away (this must have had its impact on the spell's success as well). Well, three spells, actually, but one target (Bridget) was not the desirable one. Everything seemed to go well, but something happened to her casting, maybe some irritation from previously missed spells. Her spell backfired and hit her with decent power.

Neculai had an idea, it seemed. The Levitation charm sent Milosh's way went... not Milosh's way. The target put slight effort to evade it and moved to protect his Queen as Raine moved to the side to protect the Durmstrang boy. Johannes manage to send a strong Knockback Jinx towards Erik but missed just a little bit.

While everyone was busy casting and moving, Evanore, who kept her ground for quite a while, made a silent step towards the centre of the board.

What the actual bloody hell was going on?! It was like the other team had carefully thought out each move and were trying to kill her. Katrina noticed that several people were sizing her up, but she didn’t expect her own spell to backfire again!

Thinking back, Katrina could only remember two times that her spells had actually cast and hit someone. First was a tickling charm in the SWAG game, Two Flags. The second was the smoke charm from the Blossomball that was the most unhelpful thing anyone had cast that night. So she shouldn't have been surprised that her spells were going to also backfire now.

Her own Knockback spell hit her in the chest and she careened backward through the air landing heavily on her shoulder. Thankfully, she didn’t hear anything crack, but her shoulder would certainly be bruised. It took her a moment to catch her breath. But when she was actually able to stand again, another bloody Flippindo spell hit her, you guessed it, directly in her chest. This time, Katrina went limp in the air and landed flat on her back. She struggled to catch her breath, laying there for several seconds while her vision swam. She felt like she was going to die, but refused to accept that and struggled to her feet.

There was an angry glow in her eyes. She was not going down again.

They say third time's the charm. They were wrong. Third time was most definitely not the charm, as the third Flipendo Bridget sent at Katrina did not hit. It didn't even simply miss. No, it just had to backfire.

One minute she was saying the incantation and the next she was on the ground, the wind knocked out of her. It wasn't hard to figure out what had happened: unless Katrina cheated, which the brunette couldn't imagine her doing, no one on the other team could hit her. So she'd hit herself. The blow to her pride was admittedly far worse than the force from her failed Knockback Jinx. She could take it. She could get back up, and she did. But right about now she needed to do something right, because three fails in a row was not going to cut it.

Alexei sighed slightly. Why couldn't he cast anything successfully other than that single Extinguo? And even that hadn't been very helpful, since the boy he'd extinguished had promptly caught fire again. He half wondered if just punching out all of his opponents was an option. Probably not, but he would keep it on the back burner for if this game continued to go this way.

Long story short, I survived

For once he didn't get attacked or anything. He wasn't on fire or in danger and he was able to move around the board. Milo blinked in shock at how lucky he was to still be alive. Well at least for now. He had just taken the step in front of their Queen to help protect but now the pain was going to come. The boy sighed and whipped out his wand ready to fight back.

Milosh looked over to his left to see another girl taken up a defensive position for their Queen as well. Alright maybe we got this? We can come back, the smokescreen is gone and we have an okay defense right now, let's just hope their plan isn't two steps ahead or anything.. He shuddered and shook his head to clear up his mind, his wand still gripped tightly in his hand.

He glanced to his right side and saw the girl sneak closer and braced himself. What was she planning? The boy focused his attention in front of him to the boy who was on the opposing team. Sorry about this but you'll have to get past me first, also please don't hurt me too bad my health has already been drained a bit. Milo was talking to himself again but blinked his eyes and brought himself back to reality. What was he doing? Oh right chess combat..

Erik felt exhilerated. Oh, what a rush it was to see a perfect spell being cast and inflict so much hurt on another and it seems he hadn't been the only one to target her. Her spell had backfired yet again! How amusing and utterly pathetic at the same time., he thought to himself as he grinned at her. There was no warmth in it. No joy. Just a cold and sadestic sneer. How he loved to watch his prey struggle. That's it, little one. Just crawl back onto your feet. Face your demise with some dignity. Again he aimed his wand and made the wandmovement without thinking as he spoke the incantation out loud. Have a good look. This will be the last face you'll see before I will force you out of this game.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Everything went perfectly! The marmer white right hand that held the wooden wand made the movement that he had practiced 'oh' so many times whilst studying. The pronunciation went flawlessly, emphasizing the parts that are needed, for the incantation to take effect. The last part of this recipe was the one who could make it a success story or a failure... Focus, it wasn't a secret that Neculai was fighting an inner demon. He had to divide his focus as it was. But as a miracle it happened!

The Ravenclaw boy had actually managed to cast the charm and use it in a duel! Excited as he was he almost jubilated! Yet then realisation dawned to him and he saw the charm missing his intended target. Although his excitement lessened a bit, he still was proud on this achievement. Next time, he would be successful.
