Reed held his black wand in front of him. His right hand held the wand in a sight grip, and his left was behind his back. He had a timer that would set off every 30 seconds at his right, and a training dummy about 15 feet in front of him with a piece of wood in it's hand, most likely acting as a wand. Reed Took a deep breath as he heard the timer slowly beep with each second. Beep. Beep. Beep. beep. Beep. BZZZZZZ

At the moment the timer went off Reed flicked his wand and white light blasted from it. Reed yelled "Expelliarmus!" and it formed into a blast of magic....only to fizzle and vanish 5 feet away from the dummy. Reed got frustrated, as he's been trying to use this spell for weeks now, reading it was a key spell for duelists. He read over a few paragraphs on the spell in his charms book, before seeing the timer hitting 10 seconds. He got into position. Beep. Beep. Beep. His grip tightened, and he grit his teeth. Beep. beep. Beep. He stood with his left foot pointed at the dummy and his right to the side. Beep. Beep. Beep. He raised his wand! BZZZZZZZZ!! He did the final motions just for.....nothing.

"What the hell, that wasn't even as close as last time!" He growled, sitting back down and turning off the timer. "I don't see what I'm doing wrong here...." He was getting so mad he didn't even realize that he was sitting on someone else's textbook.

"Excuse me," Adam began politely, "I think that might be mine." He pointed to the textbook under Reed Wesley, one of the Ravenclaw first-years that achieved quite a lot in the short span of his time at the school. Adam didn't want to make the boy angry -- partly because he seemed ready to slam someone with a curse at any minute. Smiling at Reed, Adam nodded at the training dummy and laughed. "Those things are frustrating, huh? I swear the ones in the Dueling Club mock me."

Adam had never seen someone work the way that Reed worked. He had developed quite an interest in Charms, passed down from his mother, most likely. Whenever Adam began to practice a new spell, he would go through the motions a few times, and if the magic wasn't working, he tended to let his emotions take over. He knew it probably wasn't the best thing to do, but if it helped him be a better wizard, he didn't see the harm. Reed, however, looked to be going about it all much more strategically. He had a timer and everything -- Adam had never seen such a structured practice session. Wondering if he could benefit from this new method, Adam asked, "Mind if I join in? Maybe we can figure it out together."

Reed slowly looked up at the new boy who was trying to get his attention. He was mostly invested in the book, but he pryed himself away and smiled. "Oh uhm. Hello!" He says, before realizing he was sitting on a book. He stood up, and made sure his wand was in his holder, before hearing the other ravenclaw speak.

"No, actually I find them to be....charming? Simple, blank, expressionless. A blank canvas. It let's you help paint a better picture of yourself without imposing on someone, you know?" He rambled, most likely not making any sense to the other Ravenclaw. "And I'm cool with trying this out together." He then went behind the teacher's desk since they were not in the room yet, and grabbed a 3rd year book containing the expelliarmus charm. he put it onto the same page his was one and handed it to the other boy.

The prefect then read over it one more time and did the wand motions explained. 'much like the swish and flick motion of the levitating charm, this spell contains two main movements. the SWISH which is primarily used to target an object, in this case an item in someone's hand, then the FLICK which is a movement that applies force in a desired motion. However, with the disarming charm, both the swish and the flick action are in one single wand movement, and must be very precise.' is what the book said following images of a student casting the spell in frames.

Before Reed got lost in studying this he realized he never properly introduced himself. A ravenclaw would probably know who he was, but he thought it would be polite regardless. "My name is Reed Alexander Wesley by the way. I've seen you in the ravenclaw dorms....uhm....Alex, right?"

"Close," he replied, laughing. "I'm Adam." The Ravenclaw prefect in front of him had at least made an effort, even if he had ended up guessing his own middle name. It was a big school, after all. Not every student could be expected to remember everyone else's names! Motioning towards the book on the table, he asked, "Hey, are you sure we should....." Trailing off, he decided against bringing up the book's advanced level to the other boy. Obviously, he knew what he was doing, and while they may not officially be able to learn the Disarming Charm until their third year, it couldn't hurt to get some extra practice in, right? "Never mind."

Taking a look at what the book had to say, Adam studied the wand movements depicted and the incantation written beside it. The Disarming Charm was a pretty common spell, but Adam had never actually looked it over in a textbook. This was probably the best place to start. Pulling his wand from the pocket of his robes, he raised it into the air and pointed it at one of the dummies, rehearsing the incantation under his breath and checking the textbook one more time. Before he fired off the spell, he raised an eyebrow at Reed and asked, "Are you sure we won't get in trouble for this?"

Reed shrugged, and smiled. "Ya know, why not? This spell is hard, but the worst thing that could happen with a failed spell is being pushed back a few feet....From personal experience." He chuckled for a moment, then continued. "If we weren't supposed to have access to them, why are they practically in the open? Trust me." Reed then went over the hand motions one more time. Started with the raise of the hand, or flick of the wrist, followed by a small circle as you flicked the wand again in the desired location.

Reed tried one last time. He waited for the timer to start buzzing before trying to cast it once more, and actually gets a small amount of light out of his wand in response. "ARG! I didn't want light, I want that wand to go flying!" He runs his fingers ran through his black locks, and went back to the book, reading it over time and time again. "It actually doesn't give any more info....none..." The Ravenclaw said, before turning to Adam. "What can you get out of this?" He asks the other 1st year. "Because I don't get any of this. I'm doing everything right...."

Adam glanced down carefully at the instructions on the textbook page. Reed was right; he was doing everything correctly, and the spell should have been working fine. Hesitantly, he pulled out his own wand, and turned to the training dummies a good distance across the room. "All right, Wesley, I trust you enough. They wouldn't have made you prefect otherwise, right? It looks like you are doing everything right in theory, so it must be more of an emotional thing. Sometimes, when spells don't work for me, I try to focus my frustration on them. Let it all channel through into the wand and letting the anger and the anxiety casting the spell for you. It sounds bad, I know, but it works, and I'm five by five over here. Let's give it a try, shall we?"

Lining himself up with the dummy and holding his wand out in front of him, he maneuvered his wand through the movements a few times without speaking to get in some practice. When he was finally ready, he tried to dig up some of the same feelings he had used when casting the Levitating Charm and the Obliterating Curse (though the latter had had some disastrous results. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes for a second. He was ready. Slicing his wand through the air, he yelled "Expelliarmus!"

A red flash of light burst from his wand, and a second later, the dummy's arm started to waver back and forth. It could have just been a sudden breeze through the room, but he thought that that was unlikely. Turning to Reed excitedly, he exclaimed, "That was something! I did something! Right?"

Reed shook a fist in the air, and smiled. "I think it was! That was great!" He said in a hyper voice. "Now let me try!" Reed then held up his wand, and took a deep breath, calming himself. He ran his thumb over the orbs carved into the wand's handle, and smiled. He hasn't seen a wand with a similar design to his so far, so he felt a bit...special. He felt like the wand chose him for some reason. Well, every wand did, but this was...an interesting case.

Reed had gone over 14 wands when trying to find the one for him. The old man Olivander said it wasn't that uncommon for someone to clash with so many wands, but the last one he brought instantly had a positive response. He was told it was made of chestnut with a dragon heartstring. Both of those factors make for a strong wand that is unbelievably hard to control, on top of being very picky with it's user. Maybe Reed just wasn't ready yet? For a wand like this, he may just need to stick with the painfully slow classes, and lessons.

But Reed wasn't wanting that. He set the timer and wait for it to count down. With every beep a new thought raced to his head. One of when his dad saved him from a doxy attack. One of his dad taking him to Diagon alley to see all the magic the world held. Then the pictures he got from his father recently. He was a powerful wizard. Almost good enough to be considered a prodigy! And here Reed was not knowing how to cast a simple spell. Before he knew it, the timer went down and he felt all the determination surging through his body like an electric current.

"EXPELIARMUS!" He yelled violently whipping his wand in the required motion. Then in a single instant, instead of sending a wave towards the dummy like planned energy kept forming at the end of his wand, forming a small orb. Reed began to panic, and his finger twitched. This was the trigger.

In an instant Reed was sent flying back into a wall, and all the nearby desks were pushed aside. He let out a gasp as the air was knocked out of his lungs. He felt pain all over, but luckily nothing....concerning.....Reed felt dizzy. Really dizzy. He then winced and felt liquid running down his back. He shakily stood up and looked for the other boy. "Adam, are you okay!?" He asked. He would get so much hell from bloom if he hurt another student.

Standing aside and watching the other boy step up for a try, Adam wondered if he had given the best advice. For Adam, an overall happy and excitable person, anger wasn't that big of a deal; the only times he really did get angry were when he was with his brother. Because of that, the tiny bit of frustration he did carry around with him was easy to access and didn't take much to tap into. He could let his mind wander into darkness for a split second, work up enough feeling to cast the spell, and spring back into place afterward. But Adam didn't know Reed. Though he seemed nice enough, there was no way of knowing if his personable demeanor was real or if it was just a front. Taking an already-enraged person and telling them to reach down inside themselves, to wield their inner anger -- that was a catastrophic idea.

So Adam was already prepared to call the whole thing off when Reed shouted the incantation. Panicking, he stepped forward in one smooth motion, preparing to knock the wand off course and maybe figure out a better way to cast the charm. He found himself frozen in shock when a ball of energy started to grow rapidly at the tip of Reed's wand instead. He turned his head, opening his mouth to tell Reed to shut it down. He never got the chance.

When the energy gave, Adam was thrown violently through the air and over a row of desks. He hit the floor hard, rolling across the wooden surface for a few feet, and finally came to a rest clutching his side. Coughing, trying to catch his breath and recover from the impact, he rolled himself onto his back and stared up at the ceiling. There was silence for a minute, and Adam started to worry for the fate of the other boy. When he heard Reed call out, he sighed in relief, and then tried to respond as steadily as he could.

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a little -- cough, cough -- winded. Trust me, this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Thought you were supposed to have things under control, prefect!" Not hearing any laughter, Adam hoped that Reed hadn't misinterpreted his joke. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Everything's okay. Think you'd better get that wand checked out, though."

Adam attempted to pull himself up from the ground, seeing that Reed had already stood, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. Letting his head fall back down to rest by the disheveled desks and papers now occupying most of the room, he shook his head ruefully. Bet no one else gets hurt this much at the castle. Calling out to Reed again, he made sure the other boy knew he wasn't in critical condition. "I think I'll just stay down here for a bit, if that's alright with you."

Reed winced at a pain in his left shoulder, and shook his head at the other Ravenclaw's joke. "I don't mind...the first response to shock is sometimes to make a joke....that's what my dad said at least." Reed tried to push a desk back into place, but the pain in his shoulder wouldn't let him. "I think we should go to the hospital wing. There may be internal damage." He insisted, holding his right hand out for Adam. "I'm sorry for bringing you into this. I shouldn't have been trying that spell anyway."

After waiting a second, he quickly ducked down, and picked Adam up forcefully. In the case of a medical emergency, there wasn't any time to wait. He then put his hand on his back oner his rob, and winced. Yup. He felt the cut right on his left shoulder. He looked to where he landed and saw a small piece of stone jutting out of the wall slightly in the rest of the brick wall. It was almost unnoticeable, but that had to be the case. The bleeding wasn't crazy, but it probably needed bandaging.

The prefect opened the door, and let out a sigh. "Come on. It's my job to make sure everyone is healthy, so I'm not gonna fail already."

Adam barked out a surprised laugh as Reed lifted him up from the ground. "Whoa, there, Superman. I can still walk." He smiled goofily and punched Reed lightly in the shoulder as soon as his feet met the ground. Holding the door open for the prefect, letting him rest his probably-incredibly-aching arm a bit more, Adam noticed the blood smeared on Reed's hand and grew serious. "Hey, you alright? It looks like you got the worst of it. They should really straighten out that wall, huh?" Following Reed out the door of the Charms classroom, Adam made sure the both of them were walking normally and started to prepare a reasonable explanation for the hospital staff. Just to be safe, they probably shouldn't tell the exact truth, but it had to sound reasonable enough.

Resolving to solve that problem when they came to it, Adam walked in silence for a moment before he remembered what else Reed had said. An apology? He didn't need to apologize. "Just so you know, I got myself into this, Reed. It's not on you. I didn't have to cast that spell, but I chose to. So just remember that this is not your fault. I think it's awesome that you were trying out that spell, and I probably would've done it anyway if I hadn't seen you practicing." Looking over Reed's torn robes and bloodied hands, he laughed. "Besides, don't take this the wrong way, but right now you're the injured one. If anything, it's my job to help you. Quite honestly, you look like you've just narrowly avoided being the victim of a horror movie."

Approaching the hospital wing, Adam realized how glad he really was to have been able to strike up this friendship with the Ravenclaw prefect. It may not have been the most ideal of circumstances, but at least no one was seriously injured. With all luck, Adam and Reed would be in and out within a half-hour.
