Paisley could see the surprise in the girl’s face at the Bellweather’s comment. A startled “Oh!” escaped her lips, her cheeks flushing pink. Kinda cute, the Slytherin girl thought absently as she waited for a response. It hadn’t been a serious question, because, honestly, she didn’t really care if she’d disturbed the other girl. Okay, maybe she did a little bit. Paisley wasn’t malicious, she didn’t scorn others who didn’t do something to her first. She actually preferred to keep to herself and keep out of trouble if she could help it, but since coming to Hogwarts that didn’t seem to be something that was in the cards for her.

A sudden jumble of words came out of the Hufflepuff’s mouth, the first bit causing her to lift a brow. She thought Paisley was cool? That almost got a chuckle out of the normally placid girl. She supposed she might understand the sentiment to an extent, but at the same time she also felt that others were too much of a pushover at times. Bullies only wanted to bully others when they thought they could get a rise out of them. They lived to know and experience the misery that they inflicted on others, and if you stood your ground and showed them you’d give it right back, in her experience, they weren’t as likely to continue. Bullies, in Paisley’s mind, were absolutely, one hundred percent cowards.

The prospect of an alliance was mentioned and this time, a laugh was actually pushed out of her mouth. Wow, that had actually surprised her. She hadn’t expected the meek seeming girl to just outright ask something like that, especially after seeing her reaction to the previous events. The Hufflepuff was distracted by the miscreant again, who seemed to pull a cigarette out of her pocket. It was so small and she was so far away before completely disappearing through the door that she couldn’t tell if it was real or fake. “If she wants to kill her lungs, I guess that’s her prerogative,” she said with a shrug. As long as she didn’t do it near her, they wouldn’t have any problems.

Paisley sat for a moment, considering the prospect of an alliance. A part of her felt like it was a hassle. After all, that meant lots of interaction and coming to the rescue and all that mucky business. But, on the other hand, she had promised her parents she’d try and form some relationships. Plus, if there was anything she’d learned during her life it was that she was quick to make enemies, so having someone who was also willing to watch her back might not have been such a bad thing. She sighed, tucking her hair behind her ear again as it had fallen across her face. “Sure, why not. My name’s Paisley Bellweather,” she introduced herself, moving to gather her books and papers in a more organized manner so that the other had enough space to sit down instead of just standing there awkwardly.

When Jess finished talking, she looked back towards the Slytherin and saw with some dismay that the other girl was laughing. Jess blushed even harder, looking down at her shoes. Maybe it had been a bad idea to ask the other girl to form an alliance with her...who spoke like that anyways? Alliance. Dammit. She really had messed up, hadn't she?

Daring a glance back up at the girl, Jess saw that she was also looking at the older Slytherin, who had just left the library. She commented about how it was up to the girl if she wanted to kill herself or not, but Jess silently disagreed. It would be one thing if the older girl had been smoking alone, outside, where the wind could carry the smoke away. But here, in the library? There was nowhere for the smoke to dissipate, not to mention that the girl was surrounded by dozens of children who were also being harmed by the cigarette's toxic fumes. Why would she be smoking at such a young age, anyways? Jess shook her head to clear her thoughts as she saw the younger Slytherin open her mouth and begin to speak.

Holding her breath and hoping against hope that the girl would actually accept her offer and not just mock her for her words, Jess looked up at the girl with shining eyes. "Sure, why not. My name’s Paisley Bellweather," Unable to help herself, Jess pumped her arm in victory, then blushed furiously. Did she actually just do that? What was it about this particular situation that had Jess acting so weird? It wasn't even as if this was the first person she had tried to befriend at Hogwarts...oh well. Jess figured it was still her brain overreacting from the silent threat she had received from the older Slytherin. "I'm, uh- I'm Jess."

It was almost startling how open the Hufflepuff was with her feelings and thoughts. Watching her face was like looking through a kaleidoscope. With each turn there was a new view, a new color, a new image. It was intriguing, to be sure. It felt a bit like watching her mother or brother, two people who she knew wore their hearts on their sleeves for the world to see. It was both foolish and admirable.

When Paisley conceded, the girl pumped her arms in excitement like a little kid then blushed even harder. This time she stifled her laugh, seeing as how last time she’d let it slip it had seemed to bother her some. See, considerate. She wondered for a moment how an alliance was going to work between two people who were so clearly different. The Hufflepuff, true to the color of her house, seemed like a little ray of sunshine while the Bellweather was a rain cloud coming to block her out. Maybe she’d learn to let a few strands through.

"I'm, uh- I'm Jess."she introduced and the Slytherin nodded in acknowledgement. “Nice to meet you, Jess. What year are you?” she asked. She looked to be around the same age as herself, but looks could always be deceiving.

Jess could feel the girl- Paisley, watching her, studying. She fidgeted, uncomfortable, and wondered in the back of her mind what the girl was thinking about her. Perhaps she was regretting having agreed to the alliance, or was lamenting having spoken to Jess at all. No, Jess told herself. I'm not doing this. I am not just going to stand here and doubt myself! I've already talked to some people, so I can talk to Paisley too. It's just words, isn't it? No need to stumble over them and blush and make a complete fool out of myself. And yet, Jess couldn't shake the feeling that the other girl was judging her, looking right through her and weighing her heart on a scale like Anubis in the ancient Egyptian stories she had heard. Sincerely hoping that the girl would find her heart to weigh less than the feather and trust her to turn out to be a good friend, Jess looked at the other girl, gazing into her eyes and trying to discern any hint of what she might be thinking.

"Nice to meet you, Jess. What year are you?" the girl asked, snapping Jess's attention back to the present. "I'm a first year," she said, grateful that that had been what the girl was thinking about. Or at least, Jess chose to believe that it was. "What about you? Is this your first year too, or...?" She let the unfinished question hang in the air, supposing that though the girl looked her age, if her behavior and the assured way in which she carried herself meant anything, she was probably a bit older. Realizing about two minutes too late that while Paisley had introduced herself with a last name but she hadn't, Jess's face turned slightly pink again and she blurted out, "My last name is Malters, by the way...just in case you were wondering." There was a pause. "Oh! And nice to meet you, too."

Jess’ mind seemed to be going a mile a minute. Sometimes Paisley thought she wanted to know what was going through someone’s head, but she pointedly decided that that wasn’t the case here. The Hufflepuff’s mind felt like it would be a raging river, she’d dive in and be sucked under the current. Paisley’s thought processes were more like a steady stream with the same constant pressure and flow. Sure there were times when it would rain and the stream would swell, kicking up the tides, but in the long run she was steadfast.

Her new ally confirmed she was a first-year then rounded the question back onto the Bellweather. “I’m a first-year as well,” she replied. True, Paisley was mature for her age. Her mother had always said she was a little…stuffy, but not in a derogatory manner. It didn’t offend the girl because, well, she knew the woman was right. Perhaps when she’d been younger she’d been the slightest bit more comparable to others her age, but all in all she’d always been one to bang to her own drum. Her brother had always been the only one to bring her out of her shell and she missed him terribly. She felt a pang in her heart at the reminder of their separation, not just because she was attending Hogwarts but because he hadn’t inherited any magic.

Jess inserted her last name a little late to the game but Paisley just nodded in affirmation. Though, if they were going to be allies she felt her counter-part needed to not feel so…intimidated was it? Hufflepuff or not, they couldn’t watch each other’s backs if the other was going to be afraid and turn-tail. “Look, I’m not going to bite you or anything. I don’t put up with anyone’s crap, but you have to be the first one to throw it before I’ll do anything to you,” she inserted, brown eyes meeting brown eyes and she tried, and probably failed, to coerce the other. She’d never been one at pep talks anyways. “Have you seen her before, by the way?” That was probably an odd question, coming from the girl who belonged to the same house as the bully. But she was new and she figured this wasn’t the first time the older girl had kicked up some mud.

Jess gazed at Paisley as the other girl said she was a first year, relieved that they were the same age. Silent for a moment, Jess thought she saw the girl seem sad for a moment, but then Paisley nodded. She must have imagined it. She smiled a bit at the girl's words of comfort, glad that she was making at least a bit of an effort to be kind to Jess. She shook her head at the girl's question, and said, "No, I don't think I've ever noticed her around before...."

The truth was, Jess hadn't really been paying much attention to the students of Hogwarts in her brief time there. True, some of the kids seemed really interesting, involved in some dramatic moment like Paisley, or simply seeming exceedingly pretty or powerful, and Jess had spared them a glance. But mostly, the girl's attention was caught up in looking at the castle itself. The soaring towers, the green of the grounds, the sounds of the Forbidden Forest at night.

The owls as they swooped through the air, clutching letters adorned with shining ink as they flew about the castle, delivering messages. The suits of armor, polished to a gleam, standing in the hallways like proud guards at their posts. The moving stairways, making an obstacle course, a beautiful mess of steps, through the halls of the castle. The swish of cloaks and the flash of lights as spells were cast, incantations muttered too far away to be heard. The candles of the Great Hall, lighting up the tables with their soft, shimmering light as the roof above them displayed a perfect image of the sky beyond it. The portraits lining the walls, each with their own unique person captured within them, talking and moving about. The ghosts, floating through the castle and wrapping students with their cold, yet welcome presence. The splash of the water as the giant squid in the lake raised a tentacle and then disappeared into the depths of the waters. The fire in the Hufflepuff common room, warming everyone up before they climbed into their four-posters, surrounded on all sides by others retiring from the events of a long, magnificently magical day. Magic. All of it, even as Jess was living through and experiencing it, felt like a dream.

Even now, as she stood talking to Paisley, a part of the girl's mind was with the rest of the room surrounding her, watching the books whizzing through the air as they sorted themselves on the shelves and hearing the whispers of the novels in the Forbidden Section. She turned back to the girl, snapping herself out of her thoughts. "I mean, school's only just started, so it kind of makes sense that this is our first time seeing her." Her brow furrowed slightly. "Do you think she'll like...come after us?" she asked, voicing her concerns.

Sorry for writing so much lol, I just watched a bunch of videos about Harry Potter and really needed to get my love for the whole wizarding universe onto paper...or a computer screen, technically.
