The Expected Messages
Serena sighed as she walked up the stairs, taking them two at a time. She made her way up the West Tower, surprised that she had actually managed to find it without getting completely lost in this maze of a castle. This might have been one of those times that she didn't mind getting lost but sadly, nothing ever goes to plan. Her mother had written to her earlier, telling her to make sure she sent a reply to every message within a reasonable time period. Unfortunately, for her mother, that meant reply straight away - which, of course, was unrealistic. Even if Serena wanted to reply straight away, she had classes to go to and people to see. She can't drop everything the minute an owl comes by.
Trying to keep her family happy, she decided that an owl every week or twice a week would be suitable. So that's what she was doing - heading off to write an expected and long awaited owl to her parents, before they started sending howlers.
Opening the door to the Owlery, she entered it and quickly looked around. There were so many beautiful owls eagerly waiting. Serena headed over to a table, pulled out some parchment and started to write a short but sweet letter. It covered the basics - saying hello, that she was well and healthy, that she was eating properly and looking after herself. She threw in some words about school and studying and tried to find some nice thoughts to share with her parents. They didn't really care if she made friends or not. More than she ate properly, stayed out of trouble, got good results. All of that boring stuff. Things that she cared less about. Serena would love to get into a little trouble now and then - it would make life a bit more exciting, at the very least. And who cared about grades? What mattered was that she was happy. Happiness was more important than grades... but try telling her parents that!
Sitting by the table, she penned her letter slowly. Just trying to think of what she could add to her boring short letter to make it a bit longer and of interest. She didn't want to have to send multiple letters so if she could get it all in one, that would save her a few return trips to the Owlery this week.

James slowly pushed the door open. He stuck his head inside and his view was dominated by feathers.
The room was full of life! James looked around at all of the owls flapping around and shifting onto perches along the walls. He saw a screech owl, a snowy owl, a barn owl, a girl, a horned owl, a-
Wait, a girl?
James noticed that there was indeed a girl here in this room full of owls, and James noticed that she was Hufflepuff too. He couldn't see her face, because it looked like she was bent over a paper, writing something...
James wondered if he should say hi or not, due to the obvious fact that she was busy. James had just been exploring the castle, trying to find new and interesting things. So far, the castle had not disappointed. James was about to leave, when something sharp pecked at the top of his head.
"Ow!" he exclaimed, moving his hand to the top of his head. An owl flew away from him and landed high up on the wall, looking very pleased with itself.
James gave it a glare, but then realized that the girl probably had noticed him by now...

Tapping the end of her quill onto the side of her face, Serena was lost deep in thought. She pondered what she could write that would ease her parents' tension but also prevent them from asking too many questions. Or in fact, being annoying. Her mother was bound to reply to this owl straight away, following up with questions about everything she could. So boy names were definitely not being mentioned in the letter. It would just lead to trouble and more questions.

They made enough noise to easily cover up the sound of the door opening or footsteps. She fell lost into thought until a sound caught her attention. James immediately blushed with embarrassment.
"Oh, no! I was just exploring the castle, and I found this place. I had just peeked in when that owl decided to attack me." he explained, shooting another look at the owl, who was ruffling their feathers with pride.
"Anyway, what are you doing? If you don't mind me asking... I still have no clue as to what this room is for besides being pecked by arrogant birds!" he said, hoping she found it a bit comedic.
"Are you writing a letter or something?" he asked, coming into the room fully and closing the door behind him.

Serena blinked for a moment... Did he just say... attack...? Yes, yes he did and she couldn't help but burst into laughter. She tried to control it, she really did but an owl attacked him?! An innocent small little furry and incredibly cute owl attacked him? Oh, it was just too funny. In fact, she was a little gutted that she missed it, what a sight that must have been! "Sorry, sorry, I shouldn't laugh" She mumbled out, whilst laughing. "What did you do to the poor guy?" She asked as she looked up to the owl he was glaring at. It looked very happy with itself - and Serena thought that it looked incredibly cute. It was one proud owl!
"Ah, I was just writing a little letter to my family. They expect a regular update on school life, eating habits, health and grades... all of that, you know?" She replied with a small shrug. It was her first time here too but she had no doubt that she was going to be visiting the Owlery often. If her mother had her way, it would be daily in fact. "Do you want some parchment to send a letter yourself?" She asked the boy, wondering if he wanted to write to anyone.

James was glad that she laughed. He liked it when he could make other people smile and/or laugh.
"That's okay. I don't... well... I was just exploring... buuuut I already said that." he stated, half to himself, and half to her.
He let out a chuckle and then realized he didn't know her name.
"My name's James, by the way. What's yours?"

Serena laughed a little and held out her hand for a handshake, "Hi, I'm Serena. Sorry, I forgot to start with that", she replied after being too distracted by the amusing start of this conversation. Dropping her parchment and quill back onto the table, since he wasn't planning to use it, she quickly signed off her name on the letter and decided that that would do. No point in dragging it out when she couldn't think of anything else to write. Oh she was sure her mother would complain no matter what she wrote on it so the amount of effort she was putting into it would go to waste nonetheless. Whilst she wrote, she looked over her shoulder back to James, "Have you seen anything good in your explorations then?", wondering if there was anything she should go check out later.
Serena took the finished letter, rolled it up and sealed it. Then she walked over towards the owl that had peaked James so proudly and held out her arm. The owl flew down towards her and perched itself on her arm, she replied by stroking its head, "Aren't you a little cutie?" She said, directing it to the owl and dropping a kiss on the top of his head.

James watched the owl with a hostile look, knowing that Serena was only teasing him. James wasn't one to tease or enjoy teasing in general, but this didn't bother him.
"Well," James started, "I haven't seen much yet..." he thought for a moment before replying further.
"He! Would you like to explore some more with me?" he asked, hoping she would say yes. James wanted to make more friends and find some more adventure, and exploring with new people seemed like a good idea. Plus, exploring wasn't as fun by himself.

Serena gently stroked the beautiful owl on the head before dropping another peck on the top of his head. Leaning close, she whispered her family's address, telling him where to deliver the letter to. She then attached the letter to his leg and walked towards the open window to let him take off and fly out. Smiling, Serena watched him flutter his wings and soar into the sky - off to deliver her letter to her parents. "Thanks little guy," She said quietly as she watched him go. He looked beautiful as he fluttered away, off on official business. Grinning, she noticed that the owl still looked very proud of itself and clearly happy with his own behaviour, which resulted in lots of affection from her anyway.
Turning back to James, she grinned and nodded, "Yeah, definitely!" She loved exploring and meeting new people was definitely something she should do, "Is there anywhere you'd like to go?" Serena asked. She wasn't sure what was around here and really needed to see more things and visit more people. In fact, she needed to make some friends in general! Her list of people she knew was pretty short right now - it was kind of sad how short it was! So she was really glad that James had invited her to join him.
