A Wizard's Park (and Recreation)
He took in the new information with much less salt than he had before. Burnett, he now knew, showed so much disdain for falsehoods that it seemed if the hazel-eyed were to tell one himself he'd end up punishing himself. A new pavement of thinking, from those he'd known. There was only one who harbored anything like it, and she'd lied to Leonard in their first meeting. Or maybe he was just an exception. While rules were not rules if they were to be selected whenever it benefited, he wasn't the best partner in conversation. Luckily, Burnett hadn't noticed. Either that or he was just incredibly desperate.
"Well, Mum says I've always been an all-or-nothing type of sleeper. Apparently that also includes cursed arachnids," he said, trying not to think about it too much. The image of that made sure he'd be a nothing sleeper for quite a few weeks.
"I am absolutely interested in that spell. Imagine, if you will, a duel between you and, let's say, a Ravenclaw. The eagle is winning, having you in a position where there's nearly nothing you can do. Then you remember a certain conjuration, one that sends the little creatures everywhere. They freeze, you take the opportunity and win, you're hailed as a hero."
Upon the request of a surname, Leonard figured that Burnett was surely different from the others he'd talked to previous. It was a level of formality usually reserved for military, people you wanted to be passive aggresive towards, and businessmen, but he wasn't complaining. There were worse things one could ask for, such as being a test subject for the newly learned spell of spider summoning.
"You can call me Oaksworth, then, Burnett. Weird name, I know. Postman thought it was a fake. And, you seem to know a big deal more than me about last year, so, if I may ask, what do you know about what happened?"

Snickering lightly at Leonard's mention of what his mother thought of his sleeping, Jack waved a hand. "Definitely better you slept all through the night that one time. Only the souls curious enough to get out of bed and break curfew to collect in the common room were subjected to the arachnid attack. Trust me, you were much better off physically and mentally by sleeping through the whole thing."
Though the scenario the other Slytherin spun caused Jack to laugh, he shook his head, still beaming. "'Hailed as a hero'?" he echoed. "Sounds more like a coward's tactic to me. Provided the Eagle opponent is as uneasy at the thought of spiders as you make them out to be, that is. But I guess that's when it pays to know your enemy."
He dipped his head in acknowledgement at the surname given, sneering at the comment accompanying it. "Sounds fine to me. Since being enrolled at Hogwarts, I've heard weirder," the redhead chuckled. "Makes me wonder just how many wizard families your postman actually delivers to."
Upon being asked what he knew about what happened the previous year, however, Jack's merry disposition dwindled.
"Heh...it's...difficult to know where to start," he admitted. " So much happened. I came face-to-face with a hag that tried to eat me. I was with the group during the spider attack, of course. The Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws got into their own trouble on two separate occasions. I got helped by one of the three students who sent this invitation," Jack added, gesturing to the paper, "...only to watch him somehow get burned alive at the secret Blossom Ball that some students thought would be fun to put on despite the teachers having cancelled it." His gaze lowered with his spirits.
"He almost died, then...and there was so little I could do to help. At least with this invitation, I'm hopeful he survived after being sent to St. Mungo's." Looking up once more, he realized what a downer he was being and tried to smile again.
"There were some pretty fun times too, though. I got mistaken for a third year's boyfriend, so I played along for a few months." Not that that had really been a laughing matter for him. His smile wilted sadly when he said it. "All in all, my dorm mates in particular seemed to get in on a good deal of the action. If you're looking to be more in the know in the coming year, I suggest joining the Severus Snape dorm."

The hazel-eyed joked about the event and how he was one of the lucky ones, to have fallen asleep and be unaware of the chaos. Joked being a term used loosely, since other than the smile that gave the impression of being completely stuck on there and a bit of a laugh, the part of it about mental health and changing blood colours was worrying. When his father said Hogwarts had been a stranger school, he'd taken it that it was the charms, alchemy, and methods of transportation that involved cleaning supplies that made it stranger, not incidents borderline of being straight out of a Stephen King film adaptation. Well, he knew firsthand by then that the castle was full of surprises, and occasionally good ones sprouted among the vampires and elitist Gryffindors. Such as Burnett, it seemed.
"It always pays to know, in every situation. That's what makes us Slytherins top tier wizards, with our cunning and all that," he interjected as the snake expressed his opinions on his little story. A highly functioning moral compass was yet another surprise, one that hadn't proved to be good nor bad in his admittedly short life. A coward's tactic? He hadn't met a single person who bore contempt for underhanded tactics as well as the title of a serpent. No matter, as long as he made sure to not get on the bad side of such a person.
"Not many, I don't think. Haven't seen any signs of magic in any of my neighbours, no floating vases or anything." Leonard answered as Burnett pondered on just how many residents of magical abilities the mailman delivered to. "That would be fun, though, if there was another in my neighbourhood. Would make summer a little less boring. Unless, of course, the vase decided to become a homing missile and chose yours truly as a target."
Leonard nodded along as the boy recounted his own experiences in the school. School also being a term used loosely, since with every word that came out of his mouth he was more sure that they were indeed in a production of an unpublished manuscript of a horror author.
"My year was certainly less troublesome than yours. That makes it look like I've just been standing still the entire time, idle while you and your companions play with pyrotechnics and weird spiders. I met a few people, hated most of them, tolerated a few, plotted split dominance over the world with a future dictatorial leader in the common room. I claimed the south of France before he could, so you'd better head over there in a few years if you want to be safe from his reign of terror," he said, trying to match the level of lighthearted dissonance the other had. He probably failed.
"I chose Merlin for first year, not sure whether I liked it or not, so I'll give your dorm a try. That's the one with the bat and the hide and seek games every year, right?"
