Leonard was decidedly not known for looking things over.

No, he looked things right in the eye, daring them to break his plans that were founded in concrete. If he had not performed his daily ritual of selecting specific shapes of Lucky Charms for breakfast, it was safe to say he had been possessed by a poltergeist of some sort. So, no, it had not been ignorance that led him to choose the emerald tie. It had been his father's delayed trip to Frank's Laundry and Dryclean Services, which rendered half the clothing in the house (mostly his father's, ironically) smelling like a garbage bin had rolled all over, after being smashed repeatedly by lighted cigarettes. Not good, in other words.

Luckily, today had been one of the few days he could get out of the house. Usually, he would be annoyed, since the job required him to be awake at six-thirty in the morning and, well, get outside. Most children would rather being sleeping in during summer, or playing video games, and Leonard was no different. But the incentive had been raised from zero to one pound, and that was enough.

He selected the only clean clothes left in the house, his Hogwarts uniform, though without the robes. He would look absolutely mad, no doubt, if he'd been seen like that. And he figured nobody would recognise him. Even then, what was the worst to happen?

And so there he was, watering calamints and poppies to his heart's content. He spotted a boy with auburn hair that looked about his age near. If he ever got bored, at least there was someone to talk to.

Place: London, England
Date: July 14th
Time: Around 7am in the morning; Summer vacation
Though he was on summer vacation with his family visiting London, the Welsh redhead woke up earlier than the rest of them on that particular morning. He'd felt like going exploring on his own for a bit, and as long as he had GPS on his phone, he doubted his parents would mind.

Jack figured his new adopted brother could use some time alone with them for a bit anyway - if not to spend sleeping in, then perhaps getting to be more comfortable with them without Jack around. Just for a little while, at least. They could call him whenever they felt like regardless.

So, after leaving them a note explaining he'd gone out and letting them know he had his phone on him, the twelve-year-old began to traverse the early morning streets of England's capital city on his own. He wondered how strong the presence of wizard-kind was around those parts, as it made him think back to the invitation he'd woken up to in his hand on the last morning he'd been at Hogwarts.

The invitation had told him to be at London Stadium, July 19th, at noon. While it was all still very enignmatic to him, Jack decided not to worry about it until he needed to. There were still several days until the date mentioned and he had a vacation in London to enjoy in the meantime. He wasn't about to spend it brooding over some ominous note if he could help it.

As Jack forced his mind away from the subject of the invitation and tried to focus instead on his surroundings, he noticed an interesting-looking individual about his own age watering some plants nearby. The boy appeared to be alone, and while that in itself peaked Jack's curiosity in regards to why the kid would be caring for flowers so early on a school-less summer day with no one else around, a few other details also caught his interest.

Mainly, there was the fact that his peer appeared to be wearing the exact formal uniform that Jack's fellow housemates wore while he had attended Hogwarts - minus the robes, which was understandable with the increasingly warm weather. The rest of his outfit, however, from his green-and-silver-striped tie to his green-and-silver-accented sweater vest, was distinctly Slytherin.

Could it have been a coincidence? Perhaps, but several of Jack's favorite intelligent characters - a few of which included V, Bartimaeus, and Batman - made it a point that they didn't believe in coincidences. Thus, Jack felt compelled to walk up to his peer in the hopes of discovering the reason behind his chosen attire.

"Hello," he spoke up merrily, rasing a hand in greeting. "Fascinating choice of plant-watering garments you have there. In fact, I daresay your plant-watering is a fascinating choice of pastime for a kid on summer vacation in general."

Jack grinned cheekily, leaning forward as he went from inspecting the flowers to the stranger tending to them. "Planning a garden tea party, perhaps? I wasn't aware snakes enjoyed that sort of thing."

Curse his father’s negligence of clothing.

There had been novels Leonard read before, wherein the protagonist were not complete angels with no sense of temptation, choice, or humour, but instead cocky and intelligent with no sense of friendliness. If this boy, most likely one of his peers, were to have a book written about him, he would distinctly fall into the last category. In the same books, the wily main character had used the information of others to get what he wanted. A similar situation to here, no doubt. Leonard was expecting it to happen to him eventually, only in a place that was less mundane as a muggle park.

He turned to face the other, who had the sort of smile that irritated most living beings on the planet. Such company would be fun.

“Hello, there. It’s quite rude to call somebody a snake, don’t you think? Unless,” he grabbed an embroidered rendition of the Hogwarts crest from his pocket. “You recognise this. In which case, you’d think we’d be doing more fascinating things than watering plants. Like, plotting for world domination. Anyways, it’s rather early, don’t you think? Shouldn’t you be in bed, or watching television?”

He was careful with his words, since there was always a chance that the other hadn’t a clue about Hogwarts, and was instead going around insulting random people. He’d met quite a few of those, and had been, at some point. Though, a fellow wizard would have been welcome, especially if he did attend Leonard’s school. Then they could discuss a certain piece of parchment they’d both received, assuming he was a Slytherin, since the other houses hadn’t seemed to be given any. With the mischievous grin he’d seen being worn by many fellow snakes, and the sheer brazenness of his act, it seemed to be the case that he had met another familiar with magic.

"Oh?" the redhead beamed as he straightened back up, raising a thick brow in response to the other boy's comment. His smile faltered in momentary surprise, however, when the plant-waterer withdrew from his pocket an embroidered Hogwarts crest. Jack stared at it a moment, then laughed aloud.

"Well," he chuckled once he had regained enough breath with which to speak coherently, "I was going to ask what made you think I was calling anybody a snake, but I think you just answered that question. Not that some would find it any less insulting to be called a snake at Hogwarts than in any other context, but I take it you don't mind," Jack sneered.

"Regardless, who says one can't plot for world domination while watering plants? Heck, for all anyone knows, that seemingly mundane act could be the key to taking over society as we know it," he pointed out, winking.

Then, smiling slyly, he crossed his arms over his chest and wagged a finger at his new conversation partner as if to scold him. "Now now, what right do you have to question me about what I should be doing when you yourself have yet to explain your own actions so early this fine summer day? Unless you really do just love watering flowers," the boy continued with a lop-sided grin.

“Well, I’m going to play a little game, if that’s alright with you. Don’t tell me your house just yet, guessing’s more fun.”

Leonard looked the redhead up and down. The most obvious choice, and most likely correct, was Slytherin. The smirk was that of someone most shrewd, and he clearly loved controlling the conversation. Observant, as an unfeeling scientist was. In other words, one of his mates from the dormitories. Of course, Ravenclaw was always a choice. He was coldly intelligent, and the words he used were recognisable from the olden days of royalty and playwrights. Well, not exactly, but advanced nonetheless. Hufflepuff would be a stretch further than Pluto. Then again, expectations were to be demolished, if he learned anything from his stint at Hogwarts. Gryffindor was a strong perhaps, since, while his attitude was rather brazen, it was most surely calculated.

“First off, greetings, fellow Snake,” he said. It would be embarrassing if he got it wrong, but there was no time for that now. He was in an open area, so running away was always an option. “Hope you wouldn’t mind my saying that.”

“Your view on watering flowers is much appreciated. In fact, I’m disappointed that I haven’t a notebook on me. If this truly is a catalyst in the controlling of the world, documents will be expected. No matter, we’ve eyewitnesses. Sleeping eyewitnesses, but we can twist the truth a little,” he deadpanned. Emotion was not to be shown to other serpents, he’d known. At least, to the ones he’d met previously. “I’m sure you’re used to that.”

“To answer your question, yes, I do indeed love flowers. Though what I love more is the money they’re paying me to do it. Now, since I’ve explained my actions, it’s your turn. Hoping to sneak out to Diagon, perhaps?”

At his peer's proclamation that he was 'going to play a little game', the redhead clapped his palms together once in delight. "Awesome! I love games." Intrigued by the other boy's self-imposed challenge, Jack smirked, holding his tongue until the other seemed to come to a decision. This didn't take long at all if his following words were anything to go by.

His smile only broadened at being addressed as a snake in return. "Mind? On the contrary, my housemate, I'm impressed. If anything, I'm actually on the verge of being disappointed in myself, since I'm surprised it seemed so obvious right off the bat. I've clearly got to work on that..." Jack scratched the back of his head sheepishly, though his cheerful demeanor hardly appeared affected.

"...Then again, I suppose it takes one to know one, doesn't it? So maybe others might not have guessed so easily," he reasoned, regarding his new conversation partner with a certain fascination.

He listened as the brunet responded to his previous comments with a good deal of high-class vocabulary, cleverness and wit, laughing lightly in mirth. The delivery of his words was just as if not more important than the words themselves and Jack found himself admiring the way the boy could keep a completely straight face while he spouted such silly banter. Somehow, however, that only made the statements all the funnier.

"But of course," he chimed in enthusiastically, his fellow Slytherin having touched upon one of his favorite hobbies of 'twisting the truth'. "Twisting, loop-holing, circumventing, implying, suggesting, evading, omitting, bending, but never breaking. Never lying," he added, his eyes glittering almost dangerously. "That's only for idiots. Far too easy to do and even easier to see through."

His countenance softened then, pleased by the brown-eyed snake's display of intelligence and honesty.

"I see," he answered, nodding in acknowledgement of the information he was presented with as well as the request to provide his own in return.
"A worthy endeavor, to be sure. As for myself, that would be nice, but I'm afraid the territory which I seek to conquer is a little more...uncharted."

The redhead's smile finally waning, he pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and held it out for the other boy to see.

The Cursed, the Eye and the Spider.

"I woke up with this in my hand on the last day of school," Jack explained soberly, staring at the mark. "I'm not sure if anyone else got one, since a great deal of them went to Hogwarts' Summer Camp instead of taking the Hogwarts Express back like myself, but...regardless, I don't like the look of it."

Hazel eyes tearing away from the invitation, his seemingly default smile returned to his face when he looked up once more at his acquaintance.

"The truth of the matter is that I'm neither very familiar with the wizarding world, nor London. My family's from Cardiff in Wales, but we're here on holiday after my first year at Hogwarts. I'm also a mudblood, so my parents are muggles. Smart as they are, I figured there wasn't much point in showing this to them. It'd probably only cause them to worry."

He turned his head, gazing off into a dense thicket of trees. "Anyway, the 19th is still some ways off, so I figured I had time. Thought I'd go around and explore a bit while the rest of my family was asleep. See what I could find."

Jack glanced back at the uniform-wearing boy, realizing he hadn't yet asked why he was dressed in such a manner. However, when he opened his mouth to speak, an entirely different question came out.

"Would you happen to know anything regarding the events of last year at our school?"

Leonard grinned. The newest victim of his conversation turned out to not only be willing to put himself in the truly wretched state of talking to him, but was also, surely, a brilliant partner in crime for later happenings. After all, they were both Slytherins. It came to them naturally, making trouble. And besides all that, it was a true mystery as to how he hadn’t noticed the boy during his time at Hogwarts. This was a much more delightful discussion than most he’d had previously. For once, the other’s top priority wasn’t to find the next knife they came across and stab him. A brilliant day.

If Leonard were to conduct a study on him right that moment, there were many positives, a nice surprise. views on lying only being for idiots were interesting. All the other methods he’d listed were most definitely what the he had used previous, which made it better, and though he hadn’t been sure of returning the title of snake, he was absolutely certain of that. There was also the added bonus of another devious mind to take over the world with, not that he hadn’t had enough for two.

“Yeah, I’d say that,” he interjected as the redhead expressed his disappointment for the uncovering of his own house. “Great minds think alike, after all.”

He examined the paper, slightly creased at the edges. The two of them seemed as curious as Leonard was the day he’d gotten his. Somehow, he was still as puzzled.

“Well, I’m from a halfblood family, and my parents have no idea what it is. Dad thinks it’s a friendly game set up by some London wizards, Mum thinks it’s a ritual to summon the great lord Cthulhu. And, I haven’t any idea about what happened last year. Not really privy to that sort of information. All I know’s that it involves dhampirs in some way, which is kind of awkward. I mean, one of the staff is a dhampir, I think, and I know a few students who’re also one of them. I think covens were also mentioned?”

Jack's thick brows show up in surprise when the other boy explained that, despite his own family being half-bloods, he and his parents were just as clueless as the muggle-born's. The theory about the ritual 'to summon the great lord Cthulhu' caused the redhead to snort involuntarily and he put a fist over his mouth to try to muffle it along with concealing his grin.

When his fellow Slytherin confessed to not really having had any idea what happened last year, Jack nodded, but the mention of dhampirs sharply drew his attention. There were many things he knew had happened involving hags, spiders, and black blood, but dhampirs? Was that a piece of the puzzle he'd missed somehow? He'd thought they were connected briefly when an older student had mentioned a rumor that full-blooded vampires had black blood, but everyone else he'd asked seemed to think it was red. What, then, made this boy think dhampirs were involved?

"Yes...there are covens of hags about," he responded. "The professors only confirmed the presence of one, but I have reason to think there may be two on school grounds; each a coven of three hags. They eat children and from I've learned, they seemed to be a bit more of a danger to Hogwarts students than dhampirs."

He tilted his head curiously at the handsome brown-eyed, brunet boy. "May I ask what makes you think dhampirs are involved? I don't recall hearing such a thing, but maybe I missed it. I had thought for a bit that one of the students who are part of this group -" he said, pointing to the symbol of the eye on the invitation, "- was a vampire, but I'm starting to think I might have just been overreacting. Maybe." If there was information about dhampirs being involved, though, perhaps he might not have been so mistaken in his guess after all.

Hoping to lighten the mood, he smiled and reached for the other boy's tie. "So...any particular reason why you're watering the flowers in this of all things? You really planning a gathering of some sort? Or maybe trying to draw as many of your fellow housemates to you outside of school as possible?"

He shrugged, dismissing the subject of children-eating monsters with much more nonchalance than the comment warranted. Leonard’s circle of acquaintances was small, and the amount that were reliable sources of information was smaller than science allowed it to be. No matter, they were in the house of Slytherin. Not having any good subjects for gossip was a greater sin than not having any at all. At least, so was the philosophy of many more students during classes than the teachers would have preferred.

“Just heard some people my year talking about it in the corridors. Of course, they could always be lying. Some people don’t share our values. But there were others who think one of the people of the cursed-eye-spider cult thing is a vampire. I mean, the spiders and curses have to be for something, right? Then again, that could be any old wizard or witch. And even then, there are holes. I know there are curses, and there are curses for the eyes, but is there a curse for summoning spiders? That’s be a right fun one to whip out during duels.”

He pointed at the neckwear. “And moving on to this, well, it’s sort of embarrassing. You know how I said my dad was clueless as a muggle was to the invitation? Apparently he’s also that way when it comes to washing clothes. He got lazy, and I’ve got nothing else left in my wardrobe. I’m Leonard, by the way.”

The conversation, now he thought about it, was an anomaly from the few he’d had before. He’d never gotten this far without mentioning his name, fake or otherwise. Leonard put this down to the fact that the others were conventionally friendly. The type that went around in parks picking flowers and petting every dog that came into their vision, the type that waved and hugged strangers as if they’d been friends until they reached the age of eighty. Not to say the green-eyed boy wasn’t friendly, but he knew Slytherin nature better than most, and if he’d look around the back of the other, there’d be a knife dripping in poison waiting for him. In other words, his usual classmates.

With a small sigh, the redhead determined that from his fellow housemate's apparent lack of concern on the subject combined with his doubt regarding the validity of his sources, he must have not gathered evidence sufficient enough to be of use to him. It was a shame; for a minute, there, Jack thought he might have been on to something.

"Ah...yes. The idiots who lie, are too stupid to know any better, or to at least get their facts straight before spreading around rumors. Typical." He shook his head until the brunet mentioned curses and summoning spiders. Hazel eyes glanced up in surprise.

"Oh...you must not have been awake that night the spiders attacked us in the common room, huh?" he realized. "We're pretty sure they weren't any ordinary spiders, since they started flying, they disappeared with light, and anyone they bit seemed to be cursed because their blood turned black. You're lucky you're one of the ones who slept through that, because it was an absolute nightmare for everyone else."

Jack chuckled softly. "Regarding a curse for summon spiders...I don't know if it's a curse, and it certainly wasn't what brought about the spiders in the common room that one night in February, but I did read about a spider-conjuring spell we're supposed to be taught in our third year if you're interested." 'Fun to whip out during duels' indeed.

The redheaded Slytherin grinned in amusement upon being told the story behind his peer's school uniform. He nodded in sympathy, understanding what an easy mistake that might have been to make, but he was still curious as to why the other boy had decided to wear the tie when all he probably actually needed was the white dress shirt. Well, no matter. It had brought about an intriguing topic of conversation just the same, so Jack wasn't going to complain.

Upon being told his new acquaintance's name, Jack nodded again and extended a hand. "I'm Jack Burnett. But, if you don't mind, I prefer going by last names. First names seem a bit...intimate to me." He tilted his head with a small smile. "That said, what might I have the pleasure of calling you if not by your first name?"

It wasn't that Jack had forgotten to ask for a name or to introduce himself that he had neglected to say anything on the matter prior to Leonard's introduction. It was simply that Jack wasn't in the habit of providing information about himself that wasn't asked for or that wasn't given by the other party first. Since Leonard had offered his own name, Jack felt it was only fair to provide his own. However, if they had gone the whole conversation without ever having exchanged names, Jack wouldn't have minded that, either. He was sure he would have learned the other boy's identity one way or another in the school months to come if he hadn't just then.
