"My wand has a Troll Whisker core. It's great for duels, although I don't plan on getting into many of those." she laughed quietly, not wanting to disturb any of the other students.
She struggled a bit more with her homework, and then, realizing Mel looked as if she was having trouble, set down her quill.
"Well, it's getting late. We should be heading to dinner, don't you think?" asked Penelope, checking her watch.
The scent of dinner wafted through the whole castle. She loved the smell of a fresh meal, it reminded her of Ireland.
"I wonder what we're having tonight." Penelope sniffed. "It smells to me like it's a casserole of some sort, what do you think?" asked Penelope casually. She liked being able to do this: have a conversation with someone without worrying what they were thinking of her or if they were going to stick around. It was a wonderful feeling; that of being herself.
Penelope smiled briefly and turned back to her work, awaiting Mel's reply. She wasn't very hungry, so it didn't matter to her if she and Melissa went to the great hall or not. She just wanted to spend time with her closest, and only, friend.

Sorry for the late reply! I totally thought I sent this before.

Melissa looked at the clock on the wall. It was already 6:30 pm. They've been studying for three hours straight already. Well, they talked quite a bit so more like two and a half hours or so. She then agreed to go to the Great Hall. The smell that was everywhere in the castle made her hungry. She started putting all of her textbooks back in her bag. Mel was grateful to have a new friend. Everything felt a lot easier ever since she met Penelope, just like studying. She didn't even notice it was three hours because she enjoyed it. She liked the fact that she had a friend to study with. Studying alone was just boring and just sad. "You know what? I'm really glad we're friends," Melissa said. She didn't have to keep to herself anymore. She could share her knowledge and experiences now. All the joys and memories came flooding back. When she moved, she locked them all in the back of her mind. because she thought she would never have a friend again. She didn't need to be reminded over and over again that she needs a friend by both herself and her parents. "Come on Penelope, let's go eat dinner," Mel said when she finished cleaning up.

"You know what? I'm really glad we're friends. said Melissa after agreeing to go to the great hall. Penelope grinned at her friend. No words could describe how happy she felt in that moment, so she just kept on smiling as she packed up her things.
Glad we're friends...Goodness! A friend. That's wonderful. And she's glad, too! Man, what I would give if I could see her over the Summer. I'll have to mention that, later though. I don't want to say too much too fast. Although her thoughts were out of order, jumbled, and downright strange, Penelope knew what she was thinking, and that was all that mattered.
Penelope gave the strange, tattered book one last mystified look, and then, pulling her thoughts away from it, placed it carefully in the top of her bag. Penelope started looking for her favorite quill, one that looked like a peacocks feather. She found it on the floor along with a spare piece of parchment.
After the two girls had finished cleaning up their mess, Penelope looked around. the sea of red, yellow, green and blue didn't seem so big anymore. Not when Mel was there. Not when a friend was so surely there to help you, nothing could go wrong. Nothing. Penelope nodded as Melissa spoke.
Come on, Penelope. Let's go eat dinner.
Together, side by side, the two girls walked out, their legs matching the other's stride for stride. It could've been coincidence that they met that day in the common room, but neither one of them believed it. No, surely it was fate. Fate had brought them together, and it was only their hope fate wouldn't isolate the two of them yet again. Because truly, that would be worse than a textbook being ripped apart.

Ahh! I got exactly 299 words. This was a fun roleplay! Thanks!
