Interacting with team black
Size did not translate to magical ability. It might've been an obvious statement to some, but it would be admittedly hard to believe that a nearly-4'5", slightly underweight weakling could wield her wand with the ease of a swordsman with his weapon. Karilyna was only fresh out of her first year at Ilvermorny, true, and was practically unable to sit through an entire lesson without fidgeting, but still, she'd quickly proven herself to be an adept witch. Well, she wouldn't be able to recite a single thing about magical history or spell etymology, but she could certainly cast a mean spell--according to past experience, that was. Anyway, win or lose, she was going to prove herself. Ilvermorny, Hogwarts, and Durmstrang would learn that Karilyna Kawahara was not a pathetic shrimp.

The raven-haired girl had watched the previous match with unusual intent, exhibiting focus that typically wasn't at all present. Why? The answer was simple. It would soon come time for her to step up to the stage, along with her team, and though she highly preferred reckless spontaneity over calculated moves, even she knew that strategy would be key to victory. A little brain power here, a spell fired there--it was supposed to be easy, right?

Finally, it was time.

Upon hearing her name called, Karilyna scrambled onto the board, joining her other four teammates… and found herself staring upwards. The pain of being short had always been present, and though the Thunderbird chose to ignore the inferiority it brought, she still realized she was several inches shorter than everyone, of course. Whatever. People could judge all they want--they'd only be proven completely wrong as the duel continued. Their loss.

The object of the game was to take out the queen. Of course, she ought to be queen; she could take some serious damage and smile through it, after all. And--she did appear rather princessy, did she not? But her stature was not news. Who would actually choose the weakest-appearing child to be the one a victory depended upon? No one. Absolutely no one.

But surprisingly, after very little discussion, it was decided. It would be her. Strategy decided, Karilyna took her rightful place on the board with an air of satisfaction, crossing her arms as she surveyed the opposition with a glint in her chocolate brown eyes. Despite some of her opponents appearing slightly scary, both in height and demeanor, she was not scared in the slightest. It did dawn on her, though, that it seemed she was the youngest on the board. A couple of other first years from Ilvermorny had been in the first match, she remembered, and perhaps the others in the preceding game had been her age as well, but the same certainly did not seem the case here. But that didn't matter, did it?

"'Kay, let's do this, guys," she finally offered her teammates before turning back to gaze across the board. A smirk spread its way across Karilyna's face as she readied her wand. She was ready to fight to the death not about to give up without a fight.

A game of Chess Combat... What on earth had he be thinking to sign up for anything like it?! The Ravenclaw shouldn't have done that. Last time he got in a spell fighting game he had well... Shaking his head to remove the bad memories he wanted to forget. Yet, it was like the memory followed him everywhere. What if it happened here as well? Was he better, yet? Would he be able to restrain himself?

It didn't matter anymore, the Dhampir would find out soon enough. While lost in thought it was like he moved on automatic pilot and only just now realized he was already on the field. Finally taking the time to look who was on his team, he smiled as he recognized a familiar face. Erik Tharaldson, the blond Slytherin boy who was a troublesome and foolhardy kid, yet Neculai couldn't wish for a better friend next to him. Confidence seemed to seep back into the pale boy. Scarlet eyes hovered over the other members of his team. One other familiar face, yet not like Erik. This was another Slytherin girl who he had seen around but never talked to. Yet he remembered her being present during the last SWAG game he had attended. The other two were people he had never seen before. So it could only be some of the new students of the other Wizarding schools. A clean state. Is what the second year thought to himself. This could be a good practice moment to help me get better in spells or this could go horribly long. A concerned expression took place. Cold, pale fingers were placed around his cherry wooden wand. It was almost show time and people would either be in for a fun game or something disastrous...

Chess Combat, Game TWO

The first spells and the first moves were executed as soon as the start was announced. Four bishops quickly moved to adjacent positions, but one of them (Katrina) got herself into an unexpected trap caused by her team member (Johannes), who just got blindfolded by an opponent (Bridget). He will be surprised to find himself in the smoke, once the blindfold is off. Maybe it was a trick to confuse the opponent's team and reduce their vision, but we'll see.

Six spells were shouted in the air, but only five made their ways out of the wands. The handsome White Queen (Alexei) was too busy distracting everyone by his undoubted handsomeness that there was not enough concentration to conjure the flame properly.

Black team's spells were landed nicely, two of them were almost avoided, but maybe next time. The only directed spell of the White team (Milosh's) landed precisely where it was targeted (Evanore) and will cause the target a bit of unpleasantness for quite a while. But instead, the lovely rook will need to deal with the fire he managed to catch.

Hogwarts Summer Camp Chess Combat, Game 2
The game began, a flurry of spells quickly flying across the board. Their Queen quickly proved her worth with a flawless Curse of the Bogies that nailed the White Queen in the chest. The opposing queen, however, was clearly not the best duelist, his spell not even leaving his wand. It could be a fluke, but perhaps the Durmstrang boy was just that big-headed as to accept a role he wasn't fit for. Either way, it was a good thing the short Ilvermorny girl wasn't on fire.

What should she cast? There was only one person she could hit, what with being only able to send spells vertically and horizontally as a rook, so she at least had her target. How about something to incapacitate him with so she could follow it up with a more powerful spell? Readying her wand, she saw Neculai and Erik moving out of the corner of her eye, likely to a square from which they could actally hit someone, and the older Ilvermorny girl sending a perfect Incendio at the other rook, only to be hit with Mucus ad Nauseam. Alright, focus. "Obscuro!"

Her spell worked perfectly and the boy across from her was blindfolded for the time being. It really was an excellent spell, one she was glad to have gained over the course of the year. The boy she blindfolded then cast the Smokescreen Spell, although clearly not where he'd intended it. Instead, the smoke furled around him, which, once he got that blindfold off, would be yet another impairment of his vision. And then, Katrina just had to step into her line of fire and in front of the Durmstrang boy. Cue internal groan. Seriously? The Gryffindor did realize she was the only person Bridget could currently hit. It was like she was asking to be targeted. The really annoying part was that she was in between Bridget and the blindfolded boy, who she'd intended to hit with something while he couldn't see.

Well, she couldn't change what Katrina had done. All she could do was ready her wand again, think of the most strategic action, and keep playing.

Milo had taken a deep breath once he was in position and flicked his wand towards his opponent, a girl across from him whom he didn't know the name of. "Mucus ad Nauseam!" The blonde boy shouted the spell, directing it towards his target. He didn't tear his eyes away as the spell hit her directly. At first he felt guilty for being successful, but then a surge of happiness and confidence flowed through him. He managed to land a spell on his first attempt which made him feel proud.

After recovering from his shock he felt a burning pain, literally. Milo looked down to see the sleeves of his long sleeve hoodie on fire. His shock was entirely now replaced with panic. Oh woah I need help, the fire is climbing me like a vine and uh I guess there goes my hoodie, it's now a thick t-shirt" The boy's mind whirled in a frightened and confused state. Milo tried pushing aside the bad thoughts and focusing on the match at hand.

I can't go down this easily. No I won't go down this easily! Theme music started playing in his head which gave him courage. He shook off the fact that he was literally aflame, I mean worst he would get burnt and and best it looked really cool. The boy let out a small chuckle at the thought before whipping out his wand again. "Round two, bring it on."

So, that was an absolute mess for his team. One of his teammates was blindfolded and had cast a bunch of smoke in the squares around him, including the one that a redheaded girl occupied. Another one had successfully cast a curse of bogies, but he was now on fire. Alexei's own spell had been a failure as well, which irritated him more than he wished to let on. He mentally cursed. This was not the way he wanted to start off the game. Still, it was the first round, and he wouldn't allow this to throw him off of his plan.

"Let's do better than that," he said as encouragingly as he could to his teammates. He was sure his annoyance was notable in his voice, but he was being as positive as he could. He wasn't normally someone who actually cheered anyone on ever, so he was doing his best. He ran a hand through his hair before mentally resetting and preparing for the next round. They could absolutely still win this. It was one bad round and they had still managed to hit one of the other team's rooks. He spun his wand around in his fingers like a drummer might with a drumstick before beginning his next move.

Long story short, I survived

Charmer & Fearless
The game was on, and even before Evanore could fully register it, spells were being flung across the board like there was no tomorrow. As the first sound of the game erupted, the girl quickly cast her intended spell which she had decided previously would be incendio duo. As the successful spell swiftly left the tip of her wand, a rush of excitement washed over her as she watched the flames beginning to eat the hoodie of her opponent. No hard feelings right? He knew what he signed up for.
Though, there was no time to celebrate her success, the game was far from over. And right after she’d landed her own spell, she was hit with a sudden impact and the feeling of really needing to sneeze, or blow her nose for that matter.
*ACHOO* *Sniffle-sniffle* Realizing she’d just been hit by the curse of the bogies spell, she couldn’t help but curse quietly through the many sniffles. She had a bad history with this particular spell, and had no intentions of letting the boy across from herself get away with it.
Sure, she’d hit him with a flaming hot incedio, but that was only some fire, shouldn’t really be an issue to put out right? Thinking fast to decide her next move, she looked over at the boy with a slight smile on her face, as she sniffled on.

It was a miracle! She had managed to survive the first round without being hit by a spell!! To tell the truth, Raine felt useless since she didn't have many spells to use. She couldn't even clear the Fumos away from her teammates. Of only she had studied with Professor Vernatis a little harder. Well, next year school year would be different.

Raine shook her head as she returned her focus back to the duel. She saw one of her opponents staring at her with an intent before she turned to discuss what to do with her team. They all agreed on what she should do and Raine nodded in return. Turning back to the opposing team, she just hoped it would all work out.

Katrina had moved spaces, although, she really had no clue what she was doing. She had made it! Nope, thought too soon, a burst of smoke erupted from the other side of the field and landed exactly where she was. Katrina stifled a cough as the dark air got caught in the lungs.

She had to keep her head in the game. It seemed like she was one of only a few that had been actually hit by a spell. That was good, right? She surveyed the rest of the game board, still trying to figure out what her best move was. Should she cast a spell even though she was in the smoke still? Was it best to leave the smoke behind and get closer to the other team?

Eventually, Katrina made up her mind what she was to do next. Hopefully it would be the best thing for the team. She really wanted to win this and be able to brag over Bridget for a while. She sized up the other team, smirking at Bridget. Was she giving crossed signals? Did she really intend to cast something to her friend. Only time would be able to tell.

Time to win this thing.

With the game commenced, spells were swiftly cast and moves made. "Mucus ad Nauseam," Karilyna incanted, directing her spell towards the boy across from her. The other team's queen. As the light from her wand connected with the opponent, the girl registered a small wave of satisfaction. Spellcasting really was an amazing thing. It just brought so much power and potential that didn't involve size or strength─two aspects in which she was more than lacking. Though there was a twinge of regret at watching the magically induced snot begin to run at unusual speeds, it was quickly gone as the Thunderbird surveyed the rest of the action.

Being the queen, and thus one of the two key players on the board, Karilyna was fully expecting a spell or three (or five) to veer her way. So, she didn't miss the uttering of an incantation meant for her, coming from none other than her own victim, and so ducked instinctively. It would've been an awful shame to be set on fire, since, well, her objective was to remain standing and conscious for as long as possible for the sake of the team; still, would it not have been just a tiny bit cool to go up in flames? But it seemed that no spell would make its way out of the wand of the opposing queen. No fire yet, then. She raised an eyebrow as smoke appeared, seemingly from nowhere, enveloping a couple of the other team's players. Hm, interesting. At least it didn't seem to be threatening her own team.

Her team's two bishops stepped forward to take new positions, while the rooks made themselves useful firing off spells. The raven-haired girl grinned as both girls' spells hit their marks perfectly, leaving one opponent blindfolded and another burning. "Wow, nice," she offered Evanore and the girl-whose-name-she-didn't-catch [Bridget]. Everything was going exactly to plan.

But all good things came to an end sometime, which was made obvious as a spell from the white team met its target. Karilyna winced as the other Ilvermorny girl's sniffles reached her ears nearly immediately, eyes immediately moving to the opposite side of the board in search of the offender. It seemed the boy in flames─the only one of his team to land a spell so far, in fact─had cast it.

So far, it had seemed as if Karilyna had made no mistake in putting her trust in her teammates. Though a round was far too short a time to judge by, she saw no problem in it. They clearly were the better team, having executed this first volley of spells perfectly. It had better remain that way.
