Chess Combat, Game 2
10th of July 2020, 01:00 pmThe stage had survived the first game pretty unscathed - to be expected with the amount of precautions they'd taken and the participants of the first match would have left the stage either on their own two feet toward the small med station they'd organized or they'd been levitated over [depending on their status]. Once everyone had been taken care of and those that wished had taken a seat on one of the warded benches to now watch the second match, Zahid called the second pair of teams to take their places on the Chess Combat arena.

Chess Combat, Game TWO
Once the first match was over, they still had time to clean the field and prepare the arena for the next match. Professor Vernatis did a great job and now it was her turn to moderate the arena. She learnt all the rules by heart, they were not difficult. Her goal was to be vigilant and make sure the duel was as fair as possible and only the legitimate spells were cast. It was a bit more difficult compared to regular duelling she had attended before. But her duties of a prefect made her a moderator in the out-of-school events as well. She stepped in the middle of the arena with the list of students and started to call them in, showing them to the left or to the right —dividing them into the teams.
Once the students discussed their strategy and positions and announced their readiness, she asked them to greet each other.
"Remember that only the legitimate spells are to be used and no physical attacks are possible. Please, make it fair and good luck," she proclaimed and coughed to cleared her throat before announcing the start, "Let the game begin!"Team Compositions

Bridget decided it was high time she reconciled her current duelling record. It had been nearly a year ago now that she'd lost her first, and so far only, duel and for the competitive girl, it was not okay to be devoid of a single win under her belt, as was the current case unless you counted Aurelia's S.W.A.G. club. Today she was determined to fix that.
The first duel concluded and the arena reset, Bridget made her way onto the chess board and stood waiting, wand held loosely in her dominant left hand. Honey-colored eyes surveyed those that would soon make up her team or opponent and went to the side she was directed to when Prefect Silmataurea addressed them. The first thing she realized was that she was up against Katrina. The brunette wasn't all too thrilled about that, since sending harmful spells your friend's way wasn't high on her to-do list, but it would be fine. They'd been up against each other in S.W.A.G. before, anyways. She wondered how the Gryffindor would hold up--fire seemed to be a staple in duelling, or any Hogwarts event where spells were cast for that matter, and the lion was understandably deathly afraid of it. How could you not be when it was the thing that had wiped out your entire family and destroyed your childhood home?
Hopefully Katrina would be alright. "Good luck!" she called to the redhead. With a smirk, she added, "You're going to need it. No hard feelings." It was kind of nice, just being able to joke with a friend. Her concentration needed to be on the duel now, though, if she wanted to win.
Turning to her team, she could at least recall seeing all of them before. That meant the two girls that were relative unknowns were from Ilvermorny and she'd seen them back in the fall. The other team had several Durmstrang students, evidenced by the fact she didn't know them at all. The Slytherin wasn't too thrilled with the members of her team she knew by name, Erik Tharaldson and Neculai Lazar. Yet another thing she knew from S.W.A.G. club--they couldn't exactly be trusted to do what was best for the team. In fact, there was a pretty high chance they'd forget the rules and start attacking the White Team.
Well, whatever. She couldn't do anything about her team now. The small Ilvermorny girl was nominated as Queen, a choice Bridget wasn't completely sure about. It wasn't that she thought she was some weakling because of her size--Thora had proved shortness did not mean frailty--but of course she had doubts, what with not even knowing the girl. Still, it was unlikely she was so big-headed as to accept the position of Queen if she knew she couldn't take a few hits and was no good with a wand, so that was a small reassurance.
Now, the most important thing was her own performance. With any luck her teammates would have some amount of skill, so if she did her best, that would have to be enough. Squaring her feet, eyes narrowed slightly, Bridget readied her wand. It was time to play chess.

Katrina was pretty excited for the game to begin. She had never played wizard chess... or any kid of chess for that matter. However, she was strategic and a quick learner so hopefully she would catch up quick. There wasn’t much worry on her side of things, after all, there were older people around to make sure no one got really badly hurt.
As they got sorted into teams, Katrina couldn’t help but puzzle. She knew no one from her team. Hopefully that wouldn’t be an advantage, but she would have to deal with things as they came. Surely they were from the other schools, at least, Katrina assumed they did.
Bridget called out to her and Katrina smiled at her friend’s face. She hadn’t put two and two together that she would be against one of her only friends. Hopefully she could put everything aside for the sake of the game. It was a game after all. Katrina decided she would avoid doing anything to her, but if they had to, she would.
“Be ready to lose!” Katrina smirked, an air of play acted confidence was portrayed from her silly upturned nose, “I can’t wait to win,” her acting fell away and Katrina gave Bridget a look that clearly said, ‘stay safe’.
It wasn’t that Katrina was worried about her getting hurt. In fact, she was really looking forward to having an excuse to practice some spell casting. But anything that had more than three Hogwarts students in one place often ended with someone hurting or unconscious or bitten or on fire. Katrina dearly hoped that the latter one wouldn’t happen, she still wasn’t sure how she would react when fire was around her. There had been a while where she was fine with it, but now she seemed more sensitive then ever after having to plan a summer without having a home.
Alright. Time to get her head in the game. Katrina walked up to her spot and looked around at her team. They all looked ready to win. Katrina took out her wand and spun it in her hand, feeling the grooves down the length of it. Don’t you dare fail me this time wand. She was ready to win this thing.

In a sense, Raine had to wonder what she was doing here. She had planned to go home for the summer and spend it with her family, see her mother at St. Mungos, and be with her brother. But somehow she got roped into staying another bloody summer under Hogwarts rules and she was even pulled into a dueling competition. She hated this. She wasn't prepared. She didn't do nearly enough studying over the school term to learn her spells as she was skipping classes for most of the year. How she even managed to pass her exams was a miracle even to her!
But here she was. Standing in her position as a Bishop with her little to no spell history under her belt and not knowing anyone on her team. She hardly saw them around the school! It was a good thing she was capable of working well with others but it didn't help that she knew that she would flop everything! Self-doubt was creeping up on her and Raine had to take a few deep breaths to calm her nerves. She wouldn't be much help to her teammates magic wise, but she definitely wouldn't be much help to them if she passed out from a panic attack that was preventable.
Looking over at her team, she nodded at them letting them know she was ready.

The blonde boy had hugged close to his other Durmstrang friend's sides the entire time but this "Chess Combat" interested him. Milo was considered shy and quiet but his curiosity outweighed his fear. He took a small but deep breath and looked around at his teammates. He was sorted into Team White with a mixed group of Hogwarts and Durmstrang students from what he could tell. Nobody he personally knew that well but it gave him comfort that he also wouldn't be the only clueless one when it came to the game.Mentions: @Astrea Soleil Neptune, @Anastasia Beckett @Katrina Walker & @Raine Sage
As his team discussed their strategy and positions he just nodded along silently, liking the idea. He was excited but not confident enough to go and voice his opinions especially if they were bad ideas. The boy turned his attention to a louder girl on their team, Katrina was her name? She seemed to be teasing her friend who was on the opposite team which was unfortunate but a little friendly battle was always good fun. He smiled at the thought before a small pang hit his heart that he was away from his friends right now.
To shake off the feeling he shot a smile towards the Hogwarts girl. "We've got this, I believe in our team!" He nodded, his confidence coming back, all he needed now was hope and luck. A ton of luck. The blonde went to take his position on the board as a Rook, his wand at his side. His eyes sparkled with excitement and he shot a thumbs up to the students across from him, none of which he knew but still he was feeling happy and wanted to encourage the other team.

Today would be better though, she was set on that. When the arena was reset after the previous game, Evanore quickly made her way to her decided spot and held her wand firmly in her hand. Her team was made up of mostly people she didn’t know. Especially the Hogwarts students she had no clue who were, other than seeing some of them around here and there. Karilyna was at least from the same school as herself, which made her a little less nervous.@Bridget Collins @Thora Larkston @Neculai Lazar @Erik Tharaldson
No wait, she wasn’t nervous, just excited. That was at least what she hoped to convince herself as she stood there, opposite of the other team.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like duelling necessarily. She found the adrenaline and excitement to be quite fun, she was just not very skilled in it. Also she would usually find other ways of having fun than slinging spells at other students and potentially hurting someone. A part of her never really liked the idea, but she knew everyone eho’d signed up knew what the risks would be. Including herself.
Glancing over to her teammates, she nodded and have them a quick «Good Luck», before she turned her attention back to the game.
The girl quickly revised the spells she had available to her usage and the rules she would need to apply. Evanore subtly tightened the left strap of her overalls and pushed her hair behind her ears. The game was soon to be on, and she had no intention of losing this time.Action: Doing as Strategized

Erik was excited and simultaneously nervous. He hadn't been doing in of these kind of activities since the last time he had participated in a game from the Spells, Wands And Games club. It hadn't gone well. Like at all... Not only had he single handedly derailed the game, but he had made sure that his team had lost. That and he had physically assaulted another student, but to be fair. He shouldn't have stepped in and caught the blow with his nose. In all fairness they had it coming. They had antagonised him after all. Not the other way around. Why? Erik had not a single clue.
When the game finally started the young werewolf was pulled out of his daydreaming. He shook his head and then steeled himself. As he looked over to his team he recognised them all from the S.W.A.G. games. Neculai Lazar, a good friend of his? Bridget Collins a fellow Slytherin and River Dewlight a fellow participant of some S.W.A.G. games. So they were all familiar with his last performance. Just great. Come on, Tharaldson. You've got this! Don't let this team down! Prove to them that you're more then some hotheaded knucklehead., with that Erik pulled out his blackthorn wood and clenched it so hard that his knuckles turned white. The werewolf was ready to show his worth. With a determined look in his face he looked over at the opposing team.

And if Johannes was anything like his great uncle Anselm in habits- which he was, very much so- he was an adrenaline junkie. So as much as he felt like summer camp was a bit of a drag, when he had seen the signup list for 'chess combat', he didn't waste any time scrawling his name down in dark, flat letters. After all, he had a very short bucket list at that moment and actual duelling was high up there, followed very closely by learning the drums and getting an ear piercing or two.
Anyway, it was a nice day out in London to practice his spellwork- the temperature mild as the sun peered out cheerily from behind white clouds. Oh, that sun would be their silent spectator to an event that Johannes had silently looked forward to from the moment he had left his mark on the page, a watcher from above as their regular, human-shaped actual spectators stared.
Teams were announced, roles set in place, and he just now realised that out of his own team, there were only two he recognised. A decent amount, considering the fact that he hadn't really gone out of his way to actually talk to people since he arrived, which was literally the whole point of living in a small area in the same vicinity for things like this but still. Clever Alexei, the boy whom it seemed that every Durmstrang girl Johannes had ever had the pleasure of talking to complained about, and carrot-topped Milosh, who- he'd never admit it- had one of the softest looking hair that he'd ever seen, and this came from a similarly curly-haired bugger. The other two, probably from Hogwarts or something.
Alright, introductions were a no then. Great. Fantastic. He'll have to find out who exactly who he's going to deck, and whos going to deck him. Because one, he didn't listen much when names were being called up, focusing mostly on the faces, and two, he's not going to get out of this as unscathed as the playing field did, will he? Certainly not, if the other team was going all in. Heck, certainly not if his team was going to go even half in.
He stepped into his designated cell with all the grace of a strangely smug cat- or perhaps a falsely innocent cub looking for trouble- rolling and stretching out his shoulders obnoxiously with his wand in a deceivingly loose grip in his left hand, the chipping black polish blending into his outfit. A rook he has become and a good one he will be- Alexei was their queen, which seemed somehow fitting. But no matter, because the other team looked just as determined as he felt inside, hidden behind the smirk he's come to call his signature.

Action: Doing as strategizedAlexei liked to think he was excellent at things involving strategy. Being the youngest of a family so full of people that were so excellent at everything else meant that he had to be good at something. He was athletic, but not as athletic as his sister. He was smart but not as smart as his brothers. He was decent at magic, but nowhere near comparable to any of his siblings. So that left cunning and planning for the youngest Petrov to master and excel at.
Sure, in real life, his strategy when it came to women was highly questionable and not exactly getting him the best results, but other than that, he thought he had a pretty good plan when it came to dealing with life. Chess was probably one of his favorite pastimes, as it involved outwitting other people and often was a nice activity to do with a pretty girl.
His team looked somewhat decent. He recognized several of his schoolmates, which was promising. While the Hogwarts girls seemed to be the prettiest he'd ever seen, Durmstrang was still far superior to any of the other schools, and he liked the idea of having teammates of a similar caliber to himself.
"Let's win this," he said confidently to his teammates as he approached his spot. He wasn't going to bother introducing himself until they had won the game. If they were a bunch of losers, he didn't much want to make any of their acquaintances.
Long story short, I survived
