An Interesting Request
Interacting with @Selim Faust
I got permission from Selim to write him in already training.
Crystal had gotten out of class, and was feeling extremely bored. She wanted to do something, anything at all. She had already changed out of her robes, wearing a yellow t-shirt and some black sweatpants. After classes were over she never saw the point in wearing her robes. Normally, she would be fine sitting in the common room, reading a book or talking to housemates. But right now, she needed to do something else, what she needed was some fresh air. A though popped into her head, about a specific tree in the courtyard. It was a willow tree, and it was extremely beautiful. If she wanted to get outside and do something, maybe she should go and draw that? Even if she didn't draw, getting out of the castle would be a lot better than whatever the heck she was doing right now.
Her mind set, she hopped up from her chair and ran to her dorm to grab her sketchbook and a pen. She debated bringing more but decided against it, she didn't wanna have to deal with a lot of things. She tucked the sketchbook carefully under her arm, stuck the pen in her pockets, and left towards the courtyard. As she stepped outside into the fresh air, she looked around for the tree she wanted to draw. She spotted the large willow tree and smiled, starting to run towards it. But when she looked to what was around it, she noticed someone underneath it. It was a boy, she couldn't get a good look at him yet, but he seemed to be doing something. She walked closer, observing him. He had pale skin, jet black hair, and seemed to be practicing some kind of martial arts. But it was such an interesting thing to watch, it was like he was fighting against an invisible opponent. But there was a rhythm to it, and he was going at such a fluid and steady pace. He clearly knew what he was doing, and knew it well.
Crystal always found martial arts interesting, and had always thought about learning some. Mostly for self defense reasons, but also because it would probably be a good way to get rid of some of the excessive amount of energy she always had. But she never got around to telling her parents she wanted to learn, and instead would just go out in the forest and run around to get rid of her energy instead. Watching this person made her wonder, would she be able to get him to teach her? For most people, they wouldn't bother asking. Crystal always felt that it was always worth taking the chance that they might say yes, rather than regret it later. Forgetting her original reason for coming here, she set her sketchbook down in a place she would be able to see it.
She headed over to the boy, continuing to be in awe at just how smoothly he was going through the motions. She was thinking of different ways to get his attention, and felt that tapping him was going to be out of the question. So she tried to get in his line of view and waved at him, "Hey, uh, hi. I was just watching you and I was curious, would you mind if you could teach me how to fight? Well not really fight, but martial arts. But I guess that is technically fighting, anyways!" she tried cut herself off from starting to ramble. "I want to learn, and you seem pretty good at it. You don't have to of course! I just thought I would ask," she quickly shut her mouth. At this point she wouldn't stop trying to explain herself, so she just held her hands behind her while looking at the boy. Hoping for an answer, preferably a yes.

Selim paused his kata as a girl approached, getting his attention and briefly rambling about wanting him to be her teacher.
Slowly he lowered his fist, watching her blankly for a few moments, catching sight of her yellow T-shirt and black pants. Along with her outgoing attitude, Selim deduced that she was probably a Hufflepuff.
Idly, he wondered why Hufflepuff girls seemed drawn to him whenever they saw him practicing his martial arts.
Selim himself was wearing nothing that gave away what house he was in, having immediately changed out of his stifling robes when his potions class had ended with him, again, finding the potions professor rather irritating, if good at his job nonetheless.
Now he was wearing a loose white T-shirt, unable to wear his usual long-sleeved one because of the stiflingly hot summer day. As consequence, the gnarled scars on his arms were out for people to see if they bothered paying attention to him.
Along with the shirt he wore light grey sweatpants, and no shoes or socks.
Thrown to the side were his dark hoodie he habitually brought with him, no matter the temperature, the scarf-like piece of clothing he wore on his casual days, and some simple combat boots stuffed with his socks.
His bookbag was discarded further away, books and sheets of paper poking out and reveling its contents... along with what seemed like the hilts of two knives.
"If you're interested in martial arts, why haven't you gone to the martial arts club and ask to be taught there?" He stated in an apathetic monotone.
He wasn't interested in gaining a student, and he doubted that, if he trained her, that she could handle it. He'd have used the way his father and sensei taught him, which, in his early days, often ended with him unconscious on the ground from exhaustion.
Such a tactic would probably be unwelcome at this school.
Though, after that disastrous ball, some might've been freaked out enough to learn how to defend themselves (aside from simply using magic as a shortcut) regardless of the consequences,
Still, this girl, who hadn't bothered to even introduce herself before blatantly asking him to teach her, seemed that she wouldn't even take such training seriously.
Selim had no use for an undedicated student... if he accepted her as one, that is.
Besides, he had to focus on training for his initiation... Though, he didn't really know how to prepare for something like T&I... there probably weren't books for such a morbid thing in the library, aside from perhaps spells that one would use to extract information more humanly.
But Otou-sama was not looking for 'humane' he was looking for ruthless apathy.
Selim tried not to think about the fact that he had already trained for that part of the initiation, before even knowing what the test would be.

The boy had paused, and Crystal smiled as she realized she managed to get his attention. Now that he was not moving around as much, she could get a much better look at him. Her eyes glanced at his arms before looking back up to his face, she didn't want her gaze to linger and be considered rude. It wasn't her place to ask about what she saw, and it isn't her job to bring attention to them. Unfortunately though, he didn't seem very interested in teacher her. "If you're interested in martial arts, why haven't you gone to the martial arts club and ask to be taught there?" he questioned Crystal, though the way he said it made her hopes drop slightly. He didn't seem super inclined to teach.
She had thought about joining the club, but there were multiple reasons why she decided not to do it. "I didn't want to be a burden, with me joining so late," more hesitation slipped into her voice than she wanted, but it was kind of hard for it not to. In her mind, clubs are for when you know a lot about something. She had a good idea, knew some basic things, but at the level others are at she would be behind. She could catch up easily, but she didn't like the idea of a large group watching her be so far behind. Joining now would mean that the people who were at her level at the beginning of the year would now be ahead of her. She would've joined at the beginning if she knew it was a thing, but she didn't. So she just, never got around to doing it.
Crystal shoved the negative thoughts and insecurities aside, she could sulk when she was alone. Right now, She had to convince this guy to teach her."It's not cause I didn't think I could learn though! I'm a fast learner, I pick up on things quickly. I don't like doing things halfway either," she quickly tried to switch her mood into a more confident one, hoping to be able to show him that she wan't lacking in ability. "I know its a ridiculous reason I didn't join, but I still want to learn. So please do consider teaching me," she insisted.
She paused, nearly slapping herself when she realized that she still hadn't said her name. Seems like this is turning into a bad habit. "I'm Crystal Jagger, by the way," she introduced herself, hoping her blunder didn't effect his perception of her. But honestly, it probably already had. She wanted to keep talking, instead of leaving it there. But crystal didn't think that continuing on a rant would make her seem more capable. So she just looked carefully at the boy's face, an attempt to see any reaction to anything she had said. Back once again to waiting.

Selim stared blankly at the girl as she spoke, his face seeming to be a mix between unimpressed and completely uncaring. When she finished with her name, he blinked, and out of habit, answered.
"Selim Faust." His voice was curt, and he turned away, beginning to practice once again limbs fluidly moving in perfect symphony together. Why do you need to learn muggle self-defense if you have magic? Use that."
If he was going to train this random girl, then he was going to put her through a wringer of questions first, see if her logic lasts long enough to match up to her words. There was a reason there weren't many students doing martial arts, it was because they had a much easier and more convenient way to 'defend' themselves.
Fools, disarming one's wand was easy, and if you didn't have your wand, what then?
Still, not many could think that critically, because they lived in relative safety, beyond the apparent dangers of this school.
Slowly, he ended his sequence of strikes, and walked away, sitting down by his age and pulling out a water bottle, quenching his thirst, then abruptly dumping some on his head to bring his overheated body back to a relatively normal temperature.
Would do no good for him if he got a heatstroke.
A frown curled down his lips as water dripped from his hair, his white shirt becoming more transparent, revealing a hint of the scarring underneath.
But at least he wasn't as hot now.

Selim Faust, that was a nice name. Crystal watched as he went back to his routine, but he still didn't seem interested. She sighed, wondering if this is actually going to go anywhere. At least she was finally getting past the initial nerves. "Why do you need to learn muggle self-defense if you have magic? Use that." Selim spoke, surprising Crystal. She honestly assumed he was going to ignore her, but maybe she actually got his attention. As far as questions go, that was an easy one. "I'm not always going to have the option of magic," she stated simply, to her it was obvious. "I might not have my wand, or I might be in a place where magic isn't allowed. If I put all of my trust into magic, I'm going to get hurt." she explained as she watched his movements, wondering why he even asked the question. People have backup plans for a reason, because the first plan doesn't always work. "I mean, its why I have multiple colored pencils of the same color. It might break, or I might run out," she mentioned, thinking back to all the times she snapped one. It didn't happen often, but she made sure to avoid the crisis of having to find a workaround.
Crystal noticed he seemed to be stopping, and followed him as Selim went to sit down. She plopped herself down nearby, not wanting to give up on this. She glanced over to her sketchbook, making sure that it was still there. It was, but the sound of splashing water made her jump. She glanced back over to Selim, who was now drenched. Was it that warm? It must've been, considering he didn't seem to happy about being soaked. She tried to think of something to say, not wanting to make a fool out of herself. But she didn't really know what to bring up. So she just sat there patiently for a bit, listening to the sounds of birds chirping. "How long have you been practicing for?" she asked Selim. It wasn't a super interesting question, but it was something she was curious about. It would definitely give her a good idea of how he practices, not just the routine he's been doing.

Selim listened to her response, betraying nothing of what he thought of her answer. Perhaps she did have some intelligence, no matter. He still wasn't swayed.
The girl then asked a question of her own, wondering how long he'd been practicing.
"If you mean just today, then around an hour or so." He had gone down to the kitchen to grab a few bites to eat from the house elves that were cooking, effectively skipping the dinner hall and the excessive number of students enemies that milled about while loudly speaking to each other and munching their lunches.
He stared up at the willow branches swaying in the breeze, feeling at ease. Then he spoke again, "And if you mean how long I've been training in martial arts in general, then since I was five." His gaze drifted over to the girl, "Otou-sama started training me while I was young, expecting nothing less than perfection from his only heir."
A hint to what he'd expect from this girl if she convinced him, which was doubtful. He'd scare her away by reviewing just what his training regime pertained. He doubted an eleven or twelve-year-old girl would look forward to training until he dropped, feeling sweating and all-around disgusting... most girls didn't like that.... right?
Honestly, Selim didn't know much about girls, other than that they scientifically had a higher emotional response to things, as opposed to males. They also matured faster, though had less muscle strength than boys, due to their ancestors mostly taking care of their offspring whilst the males protected and hunted for them all.
Of course, such a thing wasn't necessary these days, but that didn't mean that biologically, females and males changed.
He looked away once more, yawning, as exhausted as usual... the next class might end up being a time to nap instead of feigning paying attention...
Luckily his nights were spent catching up and doing homework.

Interacting with @Selim Faust
Crystal thought about the new information she was given. A whole hour, that would explain how tired he seems. She wondered briefly if she would be able to train for that long, but decided that she wouldn't know until she tried. It was interesting that Selim had been learning since he was five, though the way he talked about it was kind of strange. Crystal didn't know what Otou-sama meant, she assumed it was a different language. Though Selim mentioning being an heir made her think it might be family related. It was also strange because it sounded personal, and Selim hadn't said anything remotely personal until then. Crystal felt that it would be awkward if she didn't say something about herself in return. "I don't have any training like that for anything, but I've always explored the forest near my home," she mentioned to Selim. It wasn't as interesting as martial arts at five, but it was something.
As silence fell over the two, Crystal took the pause to think about a few things. She still wanted to learn, even if it was going to be hard. She didn't care if she would be exhausted by the end of the day, in fact that was perfectly fine. But she knew that if she wanted Selim to give her a chance, she needed to get him to know that. Crystal watched as Selim looked away and yawned, hopefully he was still paying attention. "I don't mind if its difficult, Selim. I'm fine with pushing harder to keep up with you. I still want you to teach me," she explained, determined to get her point across. Crystal wasn't sure if she should say something else, but there wasn't anything to add that hadn't already been said. So she just sat there silently, listening to the leaves shift in the wind.

Selim stared at the girl for a few moments, before speaking, tone still seemingly unconvinced. "And how exactly would this benefit me, Miss Jagger? I'm rather busy, and training someone will eat up more of my time. I have goals to meet by the end of school, things to think through, tests to study for, and personal training to keep up on."
His eyes remained blank, unfeeling, calculating. He did not want to train a child while getting no benefits. There was a reason dojos cost so much money to go to, a lot of time and effort goes into training children, half of which probably don't want to be there.
It was also the reason why dojos weren't common, many people didn't want to put up with that despite the good pay.
Selim wasn't one to give away his time for free.
He didn't owe her anything, perhaps if it was a favor then he'd do it, but it wasn't. This was just a girl who came up to him and, bluntly, asked him to teach her how to fight. He didn't know her beyond her name and what house she was in.
And he was busy. He had to prepare himself for returning back to his clan, a place that many would see as being worse then Hogwarts when it came to danger and overall care of the children housed in such an establishment. It was a much crueler place to stay at, many normal children probably wouldn't last long in the.... 'tender' care of the Faust Clan.
He saw no benefits to teaching this girl, no matter how many angles he looked at it.
So she'd have to offer him some.
