Normally Miranda liked to explore. In fact, she loved it. However, if one finds themselves in a dark, creepy corridor that wasn't somewhere they'd been before, they probably won't like it as much. That was very much Miranda's case.

Originally, her plan had been to check out the kitchens, since the house elves didn't object to visits during the day, but somehow she'd gotten turned around and was now wandering a considerably gloomier hallway that Miranda had never seen before.

Of all the rotten luck, she grumbled silently. Now what? I don't even know who I could ask for directions. There's no one here.

Still stuck as to what to do next, Miranda randomly took a right turn into a large room that was lined with small bricks that were wet with water. That meant she was probably somewhere under the lake, or nearby. Even worse, shackles and clamps lined the walls.

This place is giving me the creeps, she thought, shivering at the cool air that blew past her in slight eddies. It looks like some kind of prison. A dungeon, maybe? Didn't some third year mention that there was one?

She moved farther into the room, and found herself in another hallway that led to more rooms. Then, much to her fright, a loud scraping noise echoed out of one of the seemingly empty areas. Unable to help herself, Miranda let out a muted yelp, and jumped backwards until her back was pressed against the damp wall.

Who was there?

Altair was lost. She had originally intended to visit the potions professor to ask some questions about her homework, but ended up lost in the twisting corridors of the dungeon. She leaned against the wall to take a rest, but jumped back when she felt it was damp and moldy. She looked at the vial of her failed potion and was going to set it down, when she tripped and it scraped against the wall and broke.
Luckily, none of it spilled on her. She heard a muted yelp.
"Hello? Who's there?" said Altair. She looked up and down the hallway and turned the corner to another hallway were she found a girl who looked very frightened. "Oh, um, sorry about that. I accidentally dropped my potion." Realizing it was quite dark, she held up her wand, "Lumos." the tip lit up. She could now see the girl had blond hair and looked her age. Another thing was the girl was wearing blue, so Altair guessed she was probably a Ravenclaw. Better introduce myself. "Are you in Ravenclaw? I'm Altair, first year Hufflepuff." She shivered, even though she was wearing many layers of clothing and tugged her yellow scarf tighter around her neck.

"Hello? Who's there? Oh, um, sorry about that. I accidentally dropped my potion." The other person whispered a spell under their breath, and their wand-tip lit up. "Are you in Ravenclaw? I'm Altair, first year Hufflepuff."

"Miranda. First year Ravenclaw," Miranda replied with a small nod, her expression still half-terrified. "And it's fine." She offered a slightly strained smile. "We all make mistakes sometimes."

She carefully peeled herself off of the wall and wiped at her damp back. "Sorry if I overreacted at first. This place gives me the creeps."

That was an understatement. Even the echoes of their voices gave her cause to shiver, and Miranda was normally much braver and more confident. Although, she'd never reacted well to being trapped away from the outdoors. The general atmosphere of the dungeons didn't help much either.

"If I could ask... what exactly are you doing here?" Miranda was curious - she always was - but was also wondering if Altair knew the way back. Because if she didn't...well, getting out was going to be difficult. Who knew how far the dungeons extended into the ground.

See, this is why a map of Hogwarts would be useful, she couldn't help thinking. Then I'd stop getting stuck in ridiculous places.

"Miranda. First year Ravenclaw, and it's fine. We all make mistakes sometimes."
said Miranda. Altair smiled back in response. She watched Miranda extract herself from the wall and remembered how wet her own back felt.
"Sorry if I overreacted at first. This place gives me the creeps." Altair saw her shiver, "If I could ask... what exactly are you doing here?" Miranda said.
"Well, I had to brew a potion for potions class, but it turned out to be a big mess. So I'm trying to find the professor's room to help me fix it. And now... I'm lost." Altair wished she had paid more attention to where she was going, but now she was lost. And out of all the places she could get lost, it was the dungeons. She wondered how it felt to be a Slytherin. Do they eventually get used to their common room down there? Altair didn't think she ever would, it was really creepy and cold. Good thing there was someone else down here with her. Perhaps they could find a way out together? But now, there was another feeling that overrode her fear. It was the spark of adventure, and a dungeon seemed like a pretty good place to explore around. Monsters around every corner, finding secret treasure, dodging traps. Yes, it wasn't the worst place to get lost. But she was getting ahead of herself.
"Now my turn, what are you doing down here?" asked Altair.

"Oh," Miranda replied, trying not to look too disappointed. "I'm lost too..." She glanced around at the gloomy surroundings. "I must've taken a few wrong turns..."

Altair seemed to absorb that, then asked a question of her own. "Now my turn, what are you doing down here?" she asked.

"I went looking for the kitchens. I've gone there before, but only at night, so it looks a bit different when there's sunlight."
Miranda grimaced. "And trust me, you don't want to go there at night. Some of those house elves just don't like students out at night..."

She frowned at the damp walls, and reached over to push at a coil of chains that was pressed against the walls. They made a loud clanking sound, and Miranda startled slightly. Everything was so loud down in the dungeons, where sound could echo for ages before fading out. Even ones footsteps sounded eerie, because their echoes made it sound like someone was following you.

Altair asked her what she was doing here.

It did make some sense she wasn't able to find the kitchens. She was a Ravenclaw after all and the Ravenclaw common room was in a tower. She remembered the Hufflepuff common room was very close to the kitchens. She had heard many students sneak there to find things to eat. Altair chuckled, "At least we are lost here together, right?" she looked around at the pressing darkness. And jumped when she heard a clanking sound, but it was only Miranda touching the chains on the wall. "Well, now that both of us are down here, it should be easier to find the entrance. We split up to cover more ground." but that just reminded her of the movies she watched where every time the characters split up something bad happened. "Never mind, splitting up never turns out well." she ran through her head the list of spells she had learned in class, but none of them were very helpful in this situation. She started to panic, thinking they were going to be stuck down there forever.
"Let's just make the most of this. Are you up for an adventure?"

"Well, now that both of us are down here, it should be easier to find the entrance. We split up to cover more ground." Altair paused as if thinking of something, then changed her mind. "Never mind, splitting up never turns out well. Let's just make the most of this. Are you up for an adventure?"

"Always," Miranda replied, a bit of her normal bravado returning. Even if she was lost, at least she wasn't lost alone. "Maybe we should head deeper in? I mean, I think the dungeons have multiple exits. And for all I know, I've been walking through them for a long time and never noticed." She sighed. "I know, I should have paid more attention."

Miranda slowly turned in a circle, taking in all of the different directions they could take. There were five separate passageways, including the one she'd come from. Since she was quite positive the one she'd taken wasn't an exit, at least not for a while, that left four other options, and they all looked the same. "Which corridor did you come from?" Miranda asked Altair, wrinkling her brow in confusion. "I wasn't paying attention..."

Actually, she kind of had, but since they all appeared identical, she'd forgotten which one it had been. Well, that and the fact that she'd been a little preoccupied with talking and taking in all the details of the dungeons.

Altair watched Miranda turn around in a circle, and she noticed there were actually five passages, strange, she didn't know there were so many. But the big problem was not that there were five passages, it was that they all looked identical.
"Which corridor did you come from? I wasn't paying attention..."
She thought back to the path she was walking and tried to think of which one she had entered from. Altair frowned, "I forgot too, this whole dungeon is like a maze." she paced in a circle around the stone floor. "There is one thing I read about in a book, it said that if you keep your hand to the wall and follow the wall without lifting your hand you are bound to get out. But that is too time consuming... Or we could mark the entrances with something every time we search it... but there is nothing to mark them with." then Altair remembered her spilled potion, "Oh, I remember! I spilled my potion on the way here. If I can find which corridor the potion is in then that would leave three corridors for us to search." she walked down each corridor and finally found which one the spilled potion was in. She kept track of the passage in her head and decided to clean up the mess. "Scourgify." then she walked back to Miranda, "That's the one I entered from."

"Oh, I remember! I spilled my potion on the way here. If I can find which corridor the potion is in then that would leave three corridors for us to search," Altair said aloud, before moving over to check all of the other hallways. Miranda heard her murmur a spell, then watched apprehensively as Altair walked back. "That's the one I came from," she announced, and pointed to one of their options. Miranda breathed out a sigh of relief. That left them with three other options, which, while still quite a few, was two less than before.

"Do you want to choose one, or should I?" she asked. "They all look the same, so that isn't much help." Miranda glanced around the floor, before picking up a clamp that must've fallen off of some kind of chain. She took it over to the nearest wall and slammed the two together, leaving a faint white mark where the clamp hit. "And we can use this to mark the ones we've already taken."

She quickly made her way over to the two already nixed corridors and bashed the clamp against both of the arches in several areas. "There, now we know."

Altair watch Miranda mark the two corridors they knew were not an exit with a clamp. "There, now we know."

She looked around at the corridors, thinking which of the three remaining she should choose. Finally, she decided on the one that looked the least scary. "That one." she pointed."Let's go." The passageway was quite dark, the light from the tip of her wand only lighting up the area in a four foot radius. Several times, Altair almost crashed into a wall. Another recurring encounter was puddles spread across the entire path, requiring them to leap over it. But at least there was one path to follow, until they hit a split in the road. "Darn it." she looked down both ways, straining to see through the dark for any signs of an exit. It seemed the only light other than the one on her wand was the eerie green glow. Bright enough to be seen, but dark enough that it did not illuminate the corridors. "Should we split up or go down one together?" asked Altair. She hoped that Miranda would say they should stay together, because even though there was the thrill of adventure, there was also the creeping cold of fear.
