Midnight Adventures
7th June 2020
Looking around the corner, Heather made sure that no one was there before she continued her walk. It a little bit past midnight, and, as usual, the Ravenclaw girl couldn't fall asleep. Instead of moping around her bed while trying to ignore her roommates' loud snoring, she decided to visit probably her favorite place out of the entire castle, the kitchens. Or at least that was her initial destination- while she was in the mood for a snack, her curiosity got the best of her, like always, and Heather found herself choosing a different path. She knew it was forbidden to walk around at night- but Hogwarts was such a big place, with so many corridors and secrets! It would be a shame if no one dared to try to discover them and, even at the cost of the detention awaiting her, the tall girl decided to take the risk.
As she advanced on the unknown corridor, Heather took in the paintings (all of them were sleeping, so the girl made sure to be extra quiet) and the other decorations. Needless to say, she was in awe: how beautiful everything was! Ever since she was a child, art as a whole was Heather's passion: from painting, to singing, to doing ballet and even more, the girl loved expressing her emotions through them. Thus, being surrounded by so many beautiful things made the Ravenclaw happy- not her usual cheerfulness, that was sometimes forced, but a real joy she rarely felt.
Being so caught in her own world, though, the girl let out a small squeak when she heard something moving closer to her; quickly hiding after an armour, the Ravenclaw prayed that it wasn't a Professor, nor a Prefect. While she wasn't scared of owning up to her mistakes, she still didn't enjoy getting caught.

The castle was beautiful at night. Miranda knew this, and didn't hesitate to take advantage of the beauty. Although some people would say it looked eerie or creepy, Miranda didn't agree. There was something about the way everything seemed swathed in shadows and one could leap from one bar of silvery moonlight to another that drew her, even though it was forbidden.@Heather Blair Moretti
According to her sense of direction, she was probably somewhere near the kitchens, which meant she could try to get a midnight snack. However, Miranda ultimately decided against that because not all the house elves that worked there were friendly when it came to students out at night. She'd learnt that from her previous excursions, much to her dismay.
Maybe I should head back, Miranda thought, mournfully glancing out a window at the dark sky. Only a sliver of the moon was visible, so the hallways were darker than normal. One had to be careful if they didn't want to bang into something and cause a ruckus that would undoubtedly summon several teachers at once.
Sighing, she kept walking along the corridor she'd found herself in, trailing her fingertips lightly along the cracks between the stone bricks in the walls. Hopefully this will take me somewhere familiar, so I can get back to the common room.
However, the night had other plans for her, because a flash of movement behind a suit of armor caught her eye. In a flash, her wand was out, and she prepared herself to cast a spell or make a run for it at a moment's notice.
"Who's there?" Miranda murmured, keeping her voice low, although a hint of nervousness tainted her voice."Show yourself."

Bloody hell, whoever is here had noticed me! Cursing herself for her lack of agility, Heather pondered her options. She saw the mysterious person move their hands towards something- no doubt, they must have taken their wand out. If she said nothing or tried to run, the chances that she would get away without being jinxed were slim. And, if it was one of the teachers, it could be even worse!
Sadly, Heather thought, I have to show myself to the- "Who's there? Show yourself." Oh. Raising an eyebrow, Heather felt her worries disappear, but only slightly. The voice didn't belong to a Professor- obviously; still, it could be one of the Prefects, so the girl had to be careful. Although, the Ravenclaw felt a small tint of worry in the person's voice, so maybe she was just another student that wandered around the castle at night.
Moving a hand slowly to her back, where her wand was sitting in a pocket, Heather left her hiding spot, coming face to face with a blonde, blue-eyed girl. From the looks of it, she wasn't a Prefect, so Heather let out a small breath of relief. Smiling a bit, she moved her hand away from the wand, waving at the unknown person.
"Hey! So, um... I guess I wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep." Rubbing her neck sheepishly, Heather let out a small laugh. The girl was really pretty, and Heather felt like she had seen her somewhere, but couldn't figure out where. "I'm Heather, by the way." Holding out her hand, the taller girl awaited to shake hands with the unknown person.

To Miranda’s surprise, it wasn’t a house elf or some other creature that stepped out, but a girl.
“Hey! So, um... I guess I wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep,” she said, waving her hand and smiling.
“I guess so,” Miranda replied, still a bit nervous. “What are you doing out here at this time?” If she says she’s going to the kitchen, she thought. I’ll have to warn her about that no-good, annoying house elf.
Before she answered, first the other girl introduced herself as Heather. Miranda reaches over and shook her hand, more confidently now. She wasn’t in trouble, so what was there to worry about?
“I’m Miranda,” she replied with a quick nod. “From House Ravenclaw.”
If she had to guess Heather’s house, Miranda would probably say either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw (because of either the urge to explore or the curiosity and need to learn each house was known for) but it was too dark to see any indication from her clothes. The nearest light came from a faint glow outside the window, as well as a sputtering torch on the end of the corridor. Neither one illuminated their area very well, leaving much wreathed in darkness.

“What are you doing out here at this time?” As she heard the girl's question, Heather grinned, albeit a bit embarrassed. "Please don't laugh, but I have this strange habit of going to eat in the middle in the night. Though, I saw this corridor, and, realizing that I've never checked it out, I decided to do so now." Hoping that she wasn't coming off as awkward, Heather bit the inside of her cheek.
As the blonde girl shook her hand, the Ravenclaw let out a small smile. Though, it was soon replaced with a surprised expression. So, Miranda was a Ravenclaw too! Now it makes sense why she seemed so familiar, I must have seen her around the dorms, thought Heather. "I am a Ravenclaw too! What a nice surprise, finding one of my housemates here!" She replied, looking down at her feet.
She was barefoot, as she usually was whenever she sneaked around the castle. Though, the girl was also dressed in her pajama shorts and a large t-shirt, which, sadly, now she realized it was a bad choice of dressing up, considering the chilly breeze coming from outside.
Deciding to momentarily ignore the cold, Heather looked back at Miranda. "By the way, how come you are out at this time too?" For the tall girl, sneaking around at night was part of her routine; though, she had rarely met up with other people who were just as curious as her and decided to explore the castle. Though, now that she thought of it, maybe she just didn't search hard enough.

"I am a Ravenclaw too! What a nice surprise, finding one of my housemates here!" Heather said, glancing down at her feet, which were bare.
Miranda thought a moment about what to say, then grinned. "Birds of a feather flock together," she replied. "Sorry, I just felt like saying that. It fits, right? Since we're both in Ravenclaw, the house of the eagle. Right?"
Okay, that was a strange thing to say, Miranda thought. She's going to think I'm some kind of weirdo. Although, what do I care if she thinks that, really? It barely affects me.
"...by the way, how come you are out at this time too?" Heather asked after a brief pause.
"I was just going for a midnight walk. The castle looks amazing at night, and I couldn't really sleep, so I figured why not?" Miranda shrugged nonchalantly. "And now I've met you."
We'll see whether that turns out to be a bad or a good thing, she continued in her mind. All it takes is a tip of the scales to turn a friend into an enemy. A tip of the scales... Miranda paused, then amended her thought. Although, we might just end up as acquaintances. Or we might end up getting busted right now and we'll be strangers. Unless we meet up later... which isn't very likely.
She shot a look at both ends of the corridor, suddenly nervous that her thoughts were about to call forth a professor or prefect. Luckily, no such think happened.

"Birds of a feather flock together." Miranda replied, stopping for a moment before she continued. "Sorry, I just felt like saying that. It fits, right? Since we're both in Ravenclaw, the house of the eagle. Right?" Sensing her slight embarrassment, Heather smiled reassuringly at the girl.
She was just about to tell her that she didn't think it was weird, and that even if it was, she liked weird things, but before she could do so, Miranda answered her question. "I was just going for a midnight walk. The castle looks amazing at night, and I couldn't really sleep, so I figured why not? And now I've met you."
Nodding, Heather moved a bit closer to the girl, so they could hear and see each other better. "You're right, this place is wonderful even during the day, but when you walk through it at nights... It's a charming experience." Looking around and quietly listening, Heather didn't hear anything suspicious, so she continued. "How about we continue walking together from here? After all, adventures are better when you have a partner to have fun with!"
Grinning, Heather rubbed her arms a bit, in an attempt to warm herself up and waiting for the girl's answer.

Miranda nodded in agreement to Heather's words. "Also, it's often full of students during the day. It's much better when you're alone - or almost alone, that is."
"How about we continue walking together from here? After all, adventures are better when you have a partner to have fun with!" Heather suddenly suggested, and Miransa couldn't help but smile broadly at that, though she tried to hide it.
"I'd love to," she replied, still fighting to hide her smile. She didn't want to be too enthusiastic - it might scare Heather off. "So... where to, then?"
Miranda tried to remember the mental map of the school she'd worked on recreating. It was patchy and probably missing whole blocks of space, but it could probably get them where they wanted to go. Well, maybe.
Let's see, the kitchens are obviously nearby, so that means we're in the basement...then the potions class room and the dungeons are close. Miranda shivered a bit at the memory of her last trip to the dungeons - she'd gotten lost, and it had taken forever to get out. And that had been during the day, so it probably wasn't the best place to go at night.

"I'd love to." As Miranda accepted her offer, Heather grinned at her new companion. "So... where to, then?" The blonde girl stopped for a moment to wonder; Miranda was right, they couldn't say that they were going to explore the castle and then have no idea where to go.
Let's see, wondered the girl. Walking around the corridors without a real destination might seem funny, but it gets boring at some point. Mentally visualizing the castle, Heather came up with a few ideas. "We could go to the kitchens, as they are pretty close to us. Or, we could go to the other floors and take a peek the Library, or even the abandoned toilets!" She replied, a bit excitedly. "Then, of course, we can choose to visit the Duelling Club, the Ballroom or the Rehearsal Room! But, since we are currently in the basement, exploring them is also an option."
Shifting on her feet, Heather continued. "So, which one do you choose? Or if you have other options, feel free to share them! I may not be thinking outside the box." Looking down at her feet, the Ravenclaw hoped she didn't scare her new acquaintance off; everytime she spoke about possible adventures, Heather got quite excited.

"So, which one do you choose? Or if you have other options, feel free to share them! I may not be thinking outside the box," Heather concluded, then glanced down at her feet.
"Well, I haven't been to the Abandoned Toilets, or the Duelling club yet, and they both sound interesting. Also, if you don't mind me asking, why exactly are the Abandoned Toilets abandoned?" Miranda asked in the voice she always used when she was gathering information - it sounded inquisitive and hopeful and excited all at the same time.
For her, the castle was like one giant adventure factory. You never knew what you might find, and there were so many corridors and hallways and rooms and secret passages that you could explore forever and still have more stuff to do. It was fantastic, that was what it was. Miranda's heaven on Earth.
"Wait, there's a Duelling Club around here?" she suddenly asked, Heather's earlier words finally registering with her. "And I haven't joined yet?"
Although, maybe there was just a room and no Duelling. That was possible, if annoying. What was the point of a room like that if no one actually fought? Miranda had only seen a duel one before, when her parents had done one for the entertainment of their children. That had been back when they'd done more with Miranda and Cedar. Before they'd become secluded hermits in the eyes of their offspring.
