Coming upon @Xio Arcana on the Grounds

On that first day of his employment at Hogwarts, Cassian Mercer had decided that there were more ways to be lost at Hogwarts than there ought to be. He found such a notion embarrassing given that he had attended the school himself.

He spent the remainder of the day after unpacking his belongings and preparing both his personal quarters as well as the Caretaker's Office by walking around. Some might think of this as wandering, some might think of this as roaming, some might think of his as meandering but no - it was because of his determination and plan that made this a walk-about of the castle. With a notebook in his coat pocket and a self-inking quill, he began a growing list of things that needed looked into.

There were hinges that needed tightening, sections of stonework that was weathering away, doors that didn't want to close just right. All such things were to be expected in a castle as old as Hogwarts. Still, it seemed wise to learn what required attention and jot down to fix them relatively soon before something fell on somebody.

The castle was his responsibility, relatively speaking, and he had walked the length of it and then some on that first day, refamiliarising himself with its layout the best he could. It was approaching half past five when Cassian finally made his way onto the grounds.

Out here, he wasn't sure what belonged to him or what fell under the responsibility of the Groundskeeper. The exterior stone walls were surely his, and the staircase....but what else?

He had just reached one of the garden paths when he noticed a moving figure in the flower bed. Cassian stopped and observed what was before him. A Ravenclaw girl was kneeling among the flowers with both hands in the soil.

The new Caretaker shifted his head slightly to one side. There was a certain amount of digging and there was a certain amount of rearranging. Several of the flowers in that particular flower bed have been moved from their original positions.

His observations turned to a smaller detail in the situation - there was enough dirt on the girl's hands to suggest that this wasn't an accidental encounter. Glancing around, he thought perhaps he would see the Groundskeeper around and maybe this girl was acting as a current apprentice or assistant but for that moment, on that patch of Grounds, there was only himself and the girl.

"Good evening," Cassian said as he stepped at the edge of the flower bed. "I'm curious. What, precisely, are you doing?"

It wasn't said in a scolding tone, it wasn't said sharply. Instead, the Caretaker sounded genuinely interested, and he was.

"It appears that you've either decided to redesign the flower bed or you've made a rather unfortunate enemy of it," he said as his mouth lifted into a bit of a smile.

"Oh, and before you decide whether I'm about to tell you to stop, you should probably know I'm new here - still getting my bearings." New here? Would she even know what that meant?

"Cassian Mercer," it was best to have a more formal introduction. "The new Caretaker."

A respectable use of an evening with @Xio Arcana

Cassian surveyed the area that was before him more closely, not the layout of the garden beds, not the girl, but the flower bed in which she occupied. It had been years since he had taken Herbology and while magical plants weren't his area of expertise, he still knew what he saw before him. "Atropa belladonna is a rather bushy perennial," he agreed.

On the outskirts of the flower bed he could see where they were planted quite close - perhaps they navigated that way before seedlings from harsh winds of the Scottish Highlands. Perhaps it was a fox or squirrel who came and in trying to work some up nudged them closer together when first planted. Maybe someone helping the Groundskeeper had thought they were giving the plants ample space. Some plants could easily grow in the space designated for but not these, not adequately. Sometimes to thrive, certain living things needed more in their lives.

"All sorts of problems could occur as they grow. Competition for nutrients, too much shading and thus a reduction in flowering and fruiting. They could become spindly in their growth and tangled," all things the girl might have thought of. He was analyzing the situation, as some Ravenclaws tended to do, more than telling her the information.

Once a Ravenclaw, always a Ravenclaw. It was very much keeping with her house that the young student wanted to ensure the plants weren't too close together, but what impressed Cassian more was that it was commendable of her to admit her first statement - that she wanted to play in the dirt and look for bugs.

The upturned earth at their feet certainly was providing a rich sensory experience. Everyone had a natural urge to explore, create, to test the world around them. Cassian had done much of the same as a child, and still did to this day, but his experiments involved the dismantling of perfectly innocent objects to see how they worked and then often included attempting to put them back together again.

There was something to be said for allowing children the opportunity to discover things without worrying if their hands or clothing would get dirty or whether they might get themselves into a little trouble along the way. The girl before him was an explorer, at least from what the Caretaker was gathering in this brief encounter, and she was one who threw herself into discovery with wholehearted enthusiasm. It was a quality that he could appreciate, being one to follow one question to another simply to see where they might lead. Life should be all about discoveries, one way or another.

"That's a perfectly respectable use of an evening,......"
There was a slight hesitation. It was then that he realized that not only did he not yet know the girl's name but he hadn't given much thought to how he would address the students at Hogwarts. From his own time at the school, and from what he had overheard while walking the corridors earlier that day, it seemed that most members of staff formally addressed students by their courtesy title and surname. "A perfectly respectable use of an evening, Miss......." He hesitated again, hoping the girl would take hint and fill in the gap for him. His tone was warm enough, he hoped, that she would understand there was no cause for panic.

Cassian tried to lighten the situation a little just in case she was unsure. "You needn't look as though you've confessed to a serious crime. You were looking for bugs, not plotting to overthrow the Ministry." But then he gave a somewhat skeptical look, though the amusement in his kind eyes gave away the joke. "....You weren't secretly plotting to overthrow the Ministry while playing in said dirt and looking for said bugs, were you?"

Cassian's gaze fell on the said dirt before glancing upward to the darkening sky. There was still light left but he doubted enough for the girl to finish replanting the belladonna on her own.

The Caretaker began rolling up his sleeves. "Do the flowers require assistance or are you managing quite well on your own? I don't mind getting my hands dirty and you've established it can be a perfectly respectable use of an evening."

His gaze lingered over the disturbed earth and he found himself genuinely interested. "Did you happen to find anything interesting while you were at it? Any fascinating bugs or a curious little object that decided it belonged among the flowers?"

If they simply replanted them all, even if spacing them out, there still wouldn't be ample space for the belladonna to thrive.

"Miss Arcana, I think that is an excellent idea. I imagine Professor Asmaralaya would appreciate having a few additional plants at their disposal. So yes, we shall give these a little more room to grow and see whether the Potions professor would care to adopt the extras. You've been quite productive this evening."

They began to work and evening settled further around them. The sky beyond them was now a darkening blue signaling the approaching night and the windows of the castle began to glow against it. She worked the front half of the garden bed and he did the back and it wasn't before long that a few of the plants were uprooted nicely and placed into the grass while the others found new homes into the upturned earth with more space between them. At the halfway point, they began placing some of the extra dirt and somehow, without words and a stated plan, they both began shaping it now and again until it looked to a figure of a somewhat impressive mermaid.

"There, a little breathing room," he said when it seemed they were putting their last plants into place. "An underrated luxury sometimes to find."

Cassian glanced toward the castle. There was a great deal of things waiting for him in the Caretaker's Office, including a collection of keys who's purpose still remained a mystery. They would be there whenever he returned to them though he supposed and keys rarely minded being kept waiting.

"I'd say this is a respectable evening's work," he said and looked back to the Ravenclaw girl with a smile. "We improved a flower bed, identified a possible destination for our surplus belladonna, and we became quite the artists. Oh, and let us not fail to mention your preceding over the insects, your Honor."

He gathered the container holding the extra plants. "Thank you for the suggestion, Miss Arcana. It was a good one. If Professor Asmaralaya agrees to take them, I shall be sure to tell them who thought of it."

"If you happen to discover anything else of curiosity or importance around this place, inside or outside of the castle, I hope we can meet again for a discovery - as long as those plans don't involve overthrowing the Ministry," and he raised his index finger toward her. "As a former employee, I must should uphold some loyalty to it."

Cassian than offered a small smile before beginning to make his way back toward the castle. She could finish up, although it was mostly finished, or accompany him back as she pleased. He wasn't a professor, he wasn't a prefect, he wasn't an older sibling or her parent - and he wasn't planning on telling her what she should do. Xio Arcana was quite the free spirit and he liked that about her.
