Mentioning: @Xio ArcanaWord Count: 331The familiar syllables which made up his name faintly echoed through the halls numerous times until he was sure he was going mad. She could not possibly be so determined to torment him... what had he ever done to her anyway? A left turn took him to a long, empty stretch of wooden boards with a staircase at the far end; a blur despite Atlas' perfect vision. He'd been on the second floor for a while, and if his suspicions were right, Xio was circling in on him fast.
The boy felt his senses sharpen as he began the long journey to the staircase. There were no more than a couple students present, when previously he had handfuls to hide within. He felt exposed. A total of two doors were on the left wall while large arched windows filled the right. The immense autumnal sunlight provided him no shadows to lurk in if Xio were to strut by, and it was terrifyingly certain she would.
Tippity-tap, tippity-tap. A familiar set of footsteps that did not belong to him thumped quietly in his ear. Then louder. And louder, until he was absolutely sure this was not his imagination but cruel reality. He could not stay here for much longer.
"Atlas? Atlas Woodrow! Have you seen him? ATLAS!"
It seemed as if his eyes were pulling in opposite directions, examining each and every potential escape route less than carefully. He couldn't make it to the staircase in time. The suits of armor were poor hiding spots. Smashing a window and hurling himself out of it was not ideal either.
The boy's darting gaze locked onto a tall stone statue of a wizard striking an authoritative pose a reachable distance away. He threw himself at the statue's base and swung around to its right, the side away from where Xio was expected to arrive from. As Atlas crouched into his hiding spot, he swore she had appeared in the corner of his eye for an instant.
This wasn't going to end well.

Mentioning: @Xio ArcanaWord Count: 327"Like a predator stalking its prey." was the first thought that flashed through Atlas' head when Xio came bouncing down the hallway. It was a cruel, dehumanizing simile he did not enjoy dwelling on, but perfectly encapsulated how he felt—like a pathetic piece of meat, praying it would live to see another day. The "predator" being a bubbly, eleven-year-old girl did not help.
Then he heard a sniff. Peeking past the statue's foot, it was clear it came from Xio. People don't breathe like that. The sniff had to have been intentional, but why? She couldn't seriously be trying to smell him when it was doubtful she even knew what he smelled like... unless she did, somehow. He shuddered in disgust at the thought. This really was like a predator hunting its prey, wasn't it? Just what he wanted.
Atlas swore to himself he'd never do this again, never hide because of his cowardice. The dreadful feeling of helplessness was no better than facing Xio like he'd inevitably have to, anyway. Only now it would be worse. He could not imagine the embarrassment that came with being caught. It was like admitting she absolutely terrified him, and in some ways she did, but none were reasonable enough for anyone to see eye-to-eye with him.
Xio's mocking voice echoed through the corridors as she called out to him, prompting Atlas to temporarily pull his knees in, cover his ears, and squeeze his eyes shut. If he couldn't see her, she couldn't see him either, right? Whatever. He didn't like this stupid game of hide-and-seek.
The slight noise of shifting robes could be heard when Atlas repositioned himself to the statue's right. Too bad his wand just had to roll out from his pocket, and the little thump that followed would draw anyone's attention, especially Xio's. Instinctively, he lay flat against the floorboards without bothering to retrieve his wand. Oh, why must this happen to him of all people?
