They were supposed to climb that? Seated in the pavilion, cool for the first time in what felt like a week (it had been a day--they'd only just arrived the day prior), Owen stared up with mixed awe and dread at the rocky wall that would provide this day's challenge. How in the world had he gotten himself into this? (It was @Josephine Byrne. She'd signed up for the competition, and for some reason, he'd felt compelled to do so as well.)
Training the day prior had been fun. He'd been able to play with knots and carabiners and practice scaling the rocky surface much like how he imagined squirrels ran up trees. The vertical course that loomed above them now, however, seemed like an altogether different animal. He'd never really before felt afraid of heights, but he couldn't deny the little pit forming in his gut at the idea of falling, safety equipment and magic or not.
He hadn't been the only one from his tent to sign up, though. In truth, that was probably why he'd found himself there in the first place. It only took a glance over towards @Demo Chatura to feel some of the excitement he'd felt earlier returning. His peer might have been a bit strange (understatement), but there was no denying the infectiousness of his presence.
"Ready for a challenge?" Owen asked him (and the others from his tent if they were close enough to hear him), inspired by how invigorated the boy had seemed about the climbing competition. "I don't think I've ever climbed anything as high as that." He turned his sights back to the end goal. "I bet my brother hasn't even flown as high as that!" he added almost as an afterthought, grinning slightly at the idea of being able to hold such a feat over his brother's head for a change.
Nevertheless, while competition for the sake of proving one's aptitude against one's peers might have been on the minds of some of the others, winning the contest really was far from front and center for Owen. As they sat there, listening to the preamble and preparing to rise to the challenge, his goal was a simple one: just make it to the top.

Brave Your Way

22nd September
It was good that he was not as 'locked in' as he was with the tents. During the tent set-ups, he could not for the life of him remember the time between picking up his first tent tools, and being made to ruin them again with glee. But here, he was able to easily pick up the sound that seemed directed to him.
His head turned towards the source of it, showing a face that earned a blank staring look from Demo. Processing what he said, meanwhile trying to stare into the depths of his eyes. It was only when he realised who it was that his facial muscles remembered to move. " Oh! It's you! 5757-C " He briefly grinned, proud of his own ability to remember this boy despite it only been a month-ish since they last shared a tent. Though now there was an awkward pause since he was struggling more to remember what humans say after recognizing someone. " You don't look like you're feeling poor! Nice!".
And the conversation would've likely died there if Demo hadn't buffered 5757-C (Owen's) previous words.
" Challenge..." he looked at 5757-C (Owen) from his shoes to his wavy tuffs of brown hair. " Well, you look weak as hell" Blunt, though he gave a big grin a second later and showed a thumbs up. " GREAT! I'd love to see you win! You got a brother? You have... like.. a competition with him?"
Why else would he have mentioned a random brother?

The rock music was heard before Zephyr could reach the pavilion. He was not sure whether it was supposed to motivate him or it’ll put everyone in a competitive mood, but if he would based it on the noise around him, it doing both. He was not really interested in the snacks… for now. His attention was fixed on the cliff from the moment he arrived. His gaze travelled upward. It looked more intimidating than the easier section he had practised on yesterday. That was useful for getting accustomed to the equipment and learning where to put his weight and learning that climbing a cliff was nothing like scrambling up one of the trees back home.
Trees were familiar to him, he knew how branches behaved beneath his weight, where the trunk gave him something to brace against and how to test a branch before trusting it. A cliff doesn’t provide any of those. All it does was provide bits of rock and expected him to be grateful for them. Still, he couldn’t stop the grin threatening at the corner of his mouth. Now this is what you call a wilderness trip. The days of trekking was already enjoyable especially after spending so much time outdoors. In here, there was a finish line and other students would be trying to reach it before him. It only made things more interesting.
Strength and agility, those words of the Headmaster was more promising to him than a competition involving complicated spells. He spent most of his childhood climbing things he shouldn’t, doing physical work around Aelwyd Vale using his own strength was more familiar to him than relying on magic. But he wouldn’t underestimate what was waiting for them. His eyes returned to the cliff when the Headmaster mentioned the safety net. There were small grips somewhere up there and Merlin knows what else they haven’t been told about yet. If something went wrong, he would use the red sparks they’re talking about. He’s not going to cling stubbornly to the side of a mountain until someone had to scrape him off it because he didn’t want to quit.
When the assistants handed out the climbing equipment, he accepted his gear and wore it carefully. His dad would’ve had something to say if he saw him trusting his entire body weight to equipment he didn’t check himself. Only when he was satisfied did he follow the assistants to the starting point. Up close, the cliff looked taller. He flexed his fingers and took deep breaths. There was another possibility too which involved cheating. They technically could. There were spells that might give someone an advantage, and he knew well that some students would take the opportunity if they thought they could get away with it. But where was the fun in that?
If he was going to lose, he would rather lose because someone climbed faster than him and kicking another climber off the wall was out of the question. He moved into position at the start and rubbed his palms together. His excitement returned. The whole point was to reach the top before everyone else. He grinned, he didn’t sign up for a climbing competition to take his time getting there. Once the signal was given, he reached for his first grip.

This thread is part of the EXPLORE THE WILDERNESS EVENT.
You must have participated in the tent set up errand to participate and have signed up.
With the students geared up and in their places at the bottom of the cliffs, the start of the climbing competition finally began. Today's competition was sure to be an interesting watch for the spectators with the students' basic skills and the rough obstacles the mountain would undoubtedly throw at them.First One Up - Climbing Competition
MOD POST 1
All of the students made it through the first leg of the competition, although being a straightforward climb with no obstacles it would be sad to see someone drop from that low. Once past the first section, the climbers would notice their first challenge, small grips. Well someone had to be the first climber out, but no one expected it to be this early on in the climb. The eager Demo had made it up through the first leg decently but then when faced with the small grips it proved to be too difficult. Demo reached to try to climb higher but to no prevail. He slipped off the cliffside fully after bonking his head on a rock leaving a staff member to have to come to his aide. Maybe he can at least enjoy some more candy while recovering?
Two students representing the two host schools were also seemingly having a difficult time trying to get up to the third section of the cliffs. While Theodore didn't seem truly interested in the competition itself, Chuki on the other hand was ready to fight to get to the top. After some minor trash talking from Chuki, her and Theodore as well as Elara, Azzure and Zephyr were seemingly having a hard time getting past the small grips. Sad that so many were stuck on a lower level when there was still so many harder obstacles to come yet.
Hopefully the students who made it to the 3rd level of the cliff would have a better outcome for the rest of the climb, although you never know what could lie ahead and maybe those who were behind could come back again. Many students were able to still climb up a good amount but some that really stood out so far was Millie, Alfie and Ivy. Millie by far seemed to have gotten a comfortable start to the climbing competition with Alfie and Ivy following closely behind. All three seemed to be leading the charge of the students who had made it up higher to the 3rd level of the cliff.
But the question remains, who will be the first to reach the top of the cliffs to win the competition?

1. Speed= (1-3 units possible) (Determines number of units)
2. Older students will find this easier due to natural height and strength.
3. Obstacle rolls.
4. Damage: Everyone starts with HP (Stamina x 100); Easy obstacles - Damage = (Speed*5 - 4)* 10; Medium obstacles - Damage = (Speed*5 -3)* 10; Hard obstacles - Damage = (Speed *5 -2)* 10, Very Hard obstacles - Damage = (Speed * 5 - 1) * 10
5. If HP reaches 0, you will be levitated towards the top and your race is over, for safety reasons.
Cheating
You may choose to cheat if you feel it gives you an advantage. Look at the possible options. A d20 will be rolled to see if you are caught by the professors. You must get 11 or higher to succeed in cheating.
1. Cast Wingardium Leviosa upon yourself. Must have spell in trunk. Due to light weight, your speed + 2. Damage is limited to chosen speed. Wisdom DC = 15
2. Kick(below you)/Hit (at same level or above) opponent. Damage = 10 *Str. Opponent is hurt and needs to pause for one round. Wisdom DC = 15
3. Green Spark Charm (opponents must be at same level as you). Damage = 5* ARC. Blinds your opponent for one round as sparks occur right in front of their eyes. Wisdom DC = 151st Place: 40 sickles
2nd Place: 20 sickles

The climb started, and Bella carefully made her way up the cliff.
"Don't look down, Bella, don't look down," she chanted, as if it was a mantra that would help her survive this terrifying experience. The last time she had ever climbed a cliff was...never. This was her first time, and she thought that she was insane.
Bella was relieved that everybody made it through the first leg of the competition, and although she thought she would slip once or twice just from being nervous, she didn't (it was a miracle, she knew).
Then, it came. The first challenge. "Small" grips.
"It's small. Come on. You can do this!" she cheered herself on. It may have worked if she hadn't seen it. One of the other competitors, Demo, slipped off the cliffside after bonking his head on a rock. Bella bit her lip and tried to focus on herself.
Her friend Xio, who was slightly ahead, yelled out encouragements and warnings. Bella was ultimately SO grateful for her friend's support.
"Thanks, Xio! You got this too! We can both do this!" she shouted up, smiling as she briefly forgot how high up she was.
"Don't look down!" Xio yelled. And of course, Bella instinctively did what she was not told to do (as does everyone) -- she looked down.
"WHY did you do that?" She scolded herself, regretting it the moment she did. It was a good view, alright, though a very HIGH one.
Bella hummed to herself, trying to find good handholds and ignoring the butterflies flying in her stomach. Other competitors passed her and didn't mind at all. She didn't even want to win -- she knows she probably won't -- but honestly, just climbing this was a win for her.
Bella was just starting to feel a little bit more confident when she realized that the handholds were getting harder to find. Like Xio said, it was tricky.
"I got this! Let's do this, Bella!" she said optimistically, looking up at Xio, who was finding creative ways to climb up, and the other competitors, who each stood their own.
And Bella drew a path in her head and followed it.

____The reason why this girl seemingly so stoned face and calm despite her nervousness and doubtfulness in participating this climbing event is laid in her stubborn determination. Any can also judge by her lack of empathy hearing that one person already slipped and fall in this starting moment. Not because she was suddenly turned heartless or such, but it just because she was trying hard to avoid to looked back and down. Because if she did that, her annoying feeling named Fear would likely surfed back and won't stop mocking her for the rest of the race. She pitied whoever that fall behind her, that's why Millie tighten her grip on this so-called small grip that actually almost nothing than cliff's lump. Even so, she kept moving upward, almost hearing nothing beside the gust of wind nor even her noisy heartbeat.
____Up. Up. Up she goes. She didn't even dare to looked a little up on the cloud or sky just above her head. She didn't know who else still climbing alongside her. She also didn't know if she was left far behind or the other way around. Beside overthinking things of what would happened to her if she's the one who bumped her head and lost her grip, Millie also can't help but wonder what other obstacles is awaiting her up ahead. Although it is her first experience climbing, the girl read from many sources that higher the climbing spot is, more greater the risk that followed. She clenched her grip on the safety rope, steadying her footstep even more.

Elara heard someone call her name over the noise. She turned her head, trying to see where the voice was coming from. Then she realised it was Bella. "Hi—" she started, about to wish Bella good luck, when the signal to start was given. All of the students began climbing at once. Elara turned back to the cliff and took a deep breath. She reached for the first grip and pulled herself up. The first few grips were easy enough. She kept moving, one after another, without looking down. She tried to focus only on where to put her hands and feet next. It helped. She didn't think about the height as much when she was concentrating. Then the grips became smaller. Elara slowed down. She looked at the next grip and reached for it carefully. Her fingers barely fit around it. Just keep going. She moved one hand higher, then searched for somewhere to put her foot. Her fingers began to hurt from holding on so tightly. Elara glanced to the side. A few students were already higher up the cliff. She looked back at her own grip and felt a small knot form in her stomach. They're already past this part. She tried to reach for the next grip anyway. Her fingers caught it, but her hold wasn't very steady. She pulled herself closer to the rock and stayed there for a moment. She didn't want to look down. She took another breath and tried again. The grip was small and awkward under her fingers. For a moment, she wondered if she could actually get past this part. But stopping here wasn't going to help. Elara tightened her hold and looked for the next place to put her hand.

So far so good...The first part of the climb was easy, or so he thought. He made it through the first section nicely and found his rhythm easily. To make this easier for him, he made sure to calm his breathing and take it one at a time. The ground was already several feet below him, and he reached over another section, deciding where to place his hands next. He couldn't just grab and pull himself up but he had climbed this far, to be safe, maybe small grips would be better. He curled his fingers around and pushed himself upward. Initially, he thought everything was fine but then his grip slipped. His stomach dropped with him as his hand lost hold, and his other hand tightened around the rock as he tried to stop himself from falling. His shoe scraped against the cliffside, as if searching for something solid, but there was nothing there. He managed to catch himself before he dropped too far, but not before his palm dragged across the rough rock.
"Ow!! Bloody Merlin." A few scratches with bits of dirt could be seen against his palm. It was not anything serious, but it still stung because it was annoying. More than the scratches, he was irritated with himself. He rushed that grip instead of making sure he had a proper hold first. Giving himself some time to adjust, he stayed where he was. He could hear the noise around him and knew there were other climbers still making their way up above him, but he was not going to check. It wouldn't help him at all. Neither would getting angry and trying to make up the lost distance by climbing recklessly. He learned his lesson once on a broom.
He tested the next grip with his fingertips, making sure it was secure before pulling himself upward. His palm still stung whenever he used it, but he could work around it. He was not yet out of the competition. It may have slowed him down, but there was still plenty of cliff left to climb. The harder the obstacles, the more challenged he became. He kept his eyes on the rock in front of him. One grip at a time, there's no need to rush. It's still a long way to go.

Date 22.09.26 words 275And they were off. Hand over foot, he climbed. The thought of possible cheating was gone from his mind in the pure enjoyment of doing something physical. It was a bit different than what he was used to. In a way it was easier than the climbing he usually did. No need to stop and look for a branch that could hold his weight. The rock wouldn’t give. If his grip held, he wouldn’t fall. It was that simple.
The first stretch went rather smoothly. He found a couple of decent dips and cracks that aided him along the way. The second patch was more challenging. The holds that were so easy to find just a minute ago seemed to disappear in front of his very eyes. All that was left was small spaces where he shoved his fingers for a decent grip. He couldn’t help but snicker a bit as ahe noticed @Zephyr Deakin struggling. «Gonna have to get more speedy than that if you wanna beat me Zeph!» He called out with a laugh. Then the gnawing feeling of guilt arrived not even a moment later. But they were in a competition. Thrash talk was just a natural part of it! That was at least what he tried to convince himself of.
He continued upwards, the climbing once again going easier. He shoved his arm around a suitable rock that stuck out and took a quick moment to get a breather. It seemed to him that we was pretty much as far up as most others. Some where a shorter stretch behind them. He breathed deep as he positioned himself to climb anew.
