Hidden Beneath the Carnations
In all honesty, Vale was sure her father doesn't believe in holidays, or vacations or anything that signifies a form of mandatory leisure. She was awfully sure that he completely forgot that Vale is extremely intolerant of a complete change of scenery and weather. Taking long walks and avoiding most magical travel networks for a 'secret job.'December 28th, 2026
???, Spain
At this rate, Vale was sure the day she inherits the family business will be the day she drops it altogether and just survives on the massive generational wealth built for the rest of her life. Alas, not even her newfound disability discouraged her parents from keeping her in check.
As usual, anywhere outside of Hogwarts and home, the bodyguards stick to the family like glue. Vale was used to having some form of bodyguards throughout her life, but now it appears her father was increasing the amount these days. Was it because of Vale's official status now as heiress? Her brother stuck deep down in prison? Who knows. She just knows she was getting dragged around by her father for the holidays.
Spain.
Aren't the people required here to take naps or something? Man, if only Vale could nap right now after so much traveling. She had to ask her father to rest constantly until their tallest bodyguard, a man who says nothing but grunts, made her take a piggyback ride all the way to their destination; some sort of old, abandoned potions factory? They had to jump through a few walls and secret passages to get to it.
"What is this old, gross place? Things are scurrying about that even Familia would not eat." Vale bluntly declared, her head upside down in the dimmed space full of cobwebs and weathered damage. In a gentle manner, the giant man let Vale down onto her feet. She fixed her black robes, cracking her neck and groaning out her distaste for the lackluster aesthetics of a bygone past.
"An old family workshop. We didn't need it anymore." Vale heard her father answer. He had a lazy smile, looking as if he was cherishing some sort of fond memories. "Today will be your first day experiencing the old family trade, hands-on. Our friend is of the nicer variety, so it'll be good training."
Vale's father was always such a strange man, but it was common for any Ashwood to be strange. Today, he didn't paint his tribal marks on himself, but still had his long dreadlocks. Was it to hide his identity better? Vale had zero clue. But over the years, Vale noticed her father's hair starting to turn gray. Change was inevitable, and so was fate. Maybe her brother's imprisonment had made her father grim with worry about the family's future, especially Vale's shenganians that had caused her to now be ridden with burn scars.
Whatever it may be, Vale knew her father was getting old. And one day, she'd have to consider his grave plot. She'd have some form of practice once it was her grandmother's turn. Though Vale was quite sure that woman was bound to outlive everyone in existence.
Vale raised a brow, "Do they have horns?" "No." "Tentacles?" "No." "They sound boring." Her father only chuckled. "Trust me, the 'boring' ones usually guarantee payment. A requirement to keep up with our wondrous lifestyle, and we have guaranteed food each day besides that strange sauce spell."
Vale swears she hears something, and is ready to eagerly investigate; whatever made that sound was very unlikely to be more dangerous than Vale herself. "Oh! A victim!" Before she could bolt, forgetting about the slight aches she was having, the giant man easily grabbed the back of her collar and pulled her back. Vale glared up at him, even if it proved futile for the man who didn't seem to have many emotions.
"Rule number one of the business." Her father waved a finger, "Always keep your friends at arms' length." Vale peeked around the shadows as best as she could, still finding the lighting difficult to see through. "Okay...so how can you be sure you have friends?" Her father didn't answer, keeping his typical smile. Honestly, that man seems like an airhead at times.
"Ah, the wondrous Morte family. Always a pleasure doing business with you. Did you kill off anyone special these days? Any chance of giving a discount for being a long-time old friend, hm?" One of the bodyguards, a scarred woman who stuck with the giant man like glue herself, carefully dropped a heavy crate that contained glass vials of various mixtures. Mixtures Vale was sure the British Ministry had very much told her father to stop making. Annoying pests as usual. Vale frowned, folding her arms and staying put just as her father silently demanded.
"Oh! And this is my brilliant daughter, Vale. She's in training, so...expect her to take over the family trade sometime in the future."
Whatever this meeting entailed, Vale could only hope she could still get along with this 'Morte' family for generations to come.

VALE
ASHWOODNote: Vale has achromatopsia and uses special contact lenses to see. She is also a burn survivor.
Vale took note of her father's stiffness to act 'proper,' shaking Rafael's hand. She tapped her nails together, as if to distract herself from the ramblings she was soon to hear, only to snap to 'Julien's' greetings to her. Her red eyes scanned his dramatic gesture, and soon enough she ignored her bodyguard's small grunt and circled Julien to observe. She swiped her black nails together repeatedly, looked him over with curious, gaunt eyes, then stopped behind him.
"That hair...is it a modern style?" Vale was blunt, scanning Fabricio and immediately taking note of his hair. She smiled, grabbed her braids in a bundle, and re-enacted them like his own, pointing them up before giggling. Her eyes eventually turned back to Julien. "Bleak circumstances? How can any of this certainly be bleak? You never know; someone might just make a move and decide a duel to the death is inevitable. It could be anyone here, even me. Even you. Would you be willing to take a life? Right here and now?"
"Vale, stop teasing the boys. Remember, we have work to do first." "Yes papa." Vale slithered back into position, moving to open the crate on her own, pushing the wooden panel off with a burst of dust to follow on the floor. She rummaged through, making sure everything was inside.
"Oh! Congratulations on losing your parents young, young man! Most kids at your age don't get such an opportunity. Some of them even have to do it themselves. I used to be an axe-throwing champion back in my days, but my mother is quite slick with her movements. Always caught them and threw them right back-" "Papa, we're missing a streeler shell." Vale's father snapped his head and quickly looked through the crate. He put on gloves and pulled out a single streeler shell in his hand. "Huh? We counted this multiple times. Well, always an inventory miscount. We'll give them the supplies with a discount. Check the rest."
Vale pulled through the rest of the crate. She confirmed everything else was there. With affirmation, her father gave her head a small hug. "Well, a slight misstep on our part. We're just missing a single steeler shell. Everything else you listed is all there. Hopefully you don't need those shells right away. I'll send you the shell and some bonus ingredients in appreciation for your patience on the next run." He rubbed his hands together.
Vale was long gone from the crate, picking out cobwebs with a smile from Fabricio's hair using her nails, sticking behind him. An annoyed grunt could be heard before her tall bodyguard grabbed her by the scruff of her collar and carried her back in place. "Wonder what made this one. It's a large one..." She rolled the cobweb she had in hand into a small ball.
She made a short peek at her father, who raised a brow. Oh, right.
"200 galleons. Discounted down to 175 for the issue of missing an ingredient and time inconvenience." She was granted a head pat from her father before he turned back to Rafael. A smile laced her lips. "So...how is 175 galleons for you, Mister Morte?" Vale stared at the two boys with unblinking eyes, keeping her smile as she kept rolling the cobweb between her fingers until it disintegrated into nothingness.
