The day was young and Cricket thought it would be nice to take a stroll down to the Great Lake and work on a song she's been thinking of. She quickly slipped on a light blue hoodie, grabbed her ukulele, and fled down the bright red stairs of the Gryffindor common room. Eager to get to the lake, Cricket had tripped and fallen on what seemed like thin air. She wearily got to her feet and dusted herself off. Maybe I should walk a bit slower, she thought to herself as she walked in between clusters of students.

As soon as she was out of the crowded castle, Cricket took a deep breath of the cool, crisp air and casually walked to a silent destination. The pale Gryffindor felt a sharp breeze against her neck and decided to put the hood of her jacket on. She made her way down to the dark flow of water and found a tall, thick oak tree, perfect to sit under. When Cricket arrived to the shady spot, she found a piece of parchment. She set her instrument down and picked up the golden sheet.

The parchment embedded a picture of a tall, lanky figure with bright eyes standing next to various trees in a forest. It was clearly drawn with a thin quill and with very few smudges. It wasn't a masterpiece, but overall it was a magnificent, yet spooky, sketch. Cricket's eyes made their way down to the bottom left corner of the sheet which in tall, spidery letters was written the name STARKEY. "Bloody hell," the girl whispered out loud. She has heard rumors about the Starkey kid, how he was mischievous and feared of. Cricket thought the right thing to do was return the sketch to it's rightful owner.

Cricket put her instrument in a backpack she had brought and started asking anyone she could find if they had a clue where the Starkey boy was. "I saw him by the courtyard, I think," said a second year Hufflepuff. Cricket calmly walked towards the courtyard. She saw a slim boy about her age with raven coloured hair and dark eyes leaning against a stone wall. Cricket took a deep breath before approaching the tall figure.

"Hello, I found this sketch down by the Great Lake. Are you its owner?"

Before a pale, blonde girl walked up to the Slytherin, he’d just been thinking. The Snake woke up quite early that day, stressed out. He was assigned far too much homework the previous day that was due on Monday, and he wasn’t so thrilled about it. Naturally, he avoided doing it. He leapt out of bed and walked down to the courtyard. He stood by that wall for a while. Wyatt was a master at entertaining himself with his own thoughts and memories. He could’ve been standing there, leaning against that wall for hours.

"Hello, I found this sketch down by the Great Lake. Are you its owner?"

Wyatt blinked a few times before meeting the girl’s icy blue eyes with his own dark, lifeless ones. She was about his height, so he didn’t need to look up or down or anything. She looked cold, hence hoodie, but it was getting to be around that time of year. Looking down at the parchment, he noticed that it was, in fact, his. The horrible and familiar feeling of embarrassment kicked in, though he hid it with his infamous emotionless, unreadable expression. No one else was supposed to see that drawing.

The snake ripped the parchment from the nameless girl’s hand and crumbled it up before shoving it in his pocket. It wasn’t exactly a sketch someone in a good mindset would draw, and he wasn’t looking for an interview on it from some random girl. But this girl had some nerve. She must be a Gryffindor, he thought. Only a Gryffindor would have this much nerve. His emotionless expression melted in to a look of subtle anger. He was used to Gryffindors like this who would tease him for the way he breathed.

Wyatt crossed his arms defensively. “Thank you for coming to my rescue,” he sneered. This Slytherin wasn’t in the business of making friends or getting along with people in general, especially Gryffindors.

The boy looked up and met Cricket's eyes. She was able to read him better now that she saw his full face. He looked stressed and a bit embarrassed. His messy, dark hair covered his lifeless eyes as he was awoken from his train of thought. The Gryffindor stretched out her arm revealing the mysterious picture. It wasn't soon before the boy snatched the parchment out of her hand and crumbled it into his pocket, a small hint of anger spread across his corpse-like face.

“Thank you for coming to my rescue,” he sneered. Starkey's raspy voice was caught in Cricket's ears as she has never interacted with him. The pale girl would usually jump at a remark like his, but there was something about this boy that just made her want to snap back. I heard a rumour that he threatened a third year Ravenclaw near the abandoned toilets, she remembered over-hearing while she was reading a book in the Gryffindor common room.

Cricket looked down at her hands which were tinted with dirt from picking up the golden sheet from under the tall, oak tree. She wiped them on her dark blue jeans, leaving a chocolate brown handprint on them. She pulled her hood off, crossed her arms, and slightly raised an eyebrow as she said, "I was going to say it was quite nice, actually. But if that's the game you'd like to play, then I'd be happy to join," as a small smirk cracked at the ends of her lips.

"I was going to say it was quite nice, actually. But if that's the game you'd like to play, then I'd be happy to join."

If this was the way this girl started the conversation, he’d have thought her a Slytherin. Wyatt’s scowl went back to its resting unreadable state. He thought maybe he should observe this girl a little more seriously. To Wyatt, she was interesting. She was kind, but she packed a punch. At first glance, she seems kind and caring, fragile almost. But Wyatt had a feeling he shouldn’t tick her off. Still, he would, even though he knew he shouldn’t. Over her shoulder, Wyatt spotted a ukulele. With two guitars and a bass, he didn’t think he needed to learn the ukulele. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t afford another instrument, so it was out of the question.

The snake was baffled but he hid it well. For once, he wasn’t exactly sure what to think. This girl seemed to have more personalities than one. Something about her intrigued Wyatt, so he didn’t walk away like he normally would have. I have to think of a reply, he thought. For once, he wasn’t exactly sure what to say. And he usually had a witty comeback for everything. “Do you always stick your nose into other people’s business?” That was all he could think of. Quite cliché in his opinion, but it was something. He liked to have the last word, so if he couldn’t think of anything to say in the beginning, there would be no last word to have.

“Do you always stick your nose into other people’s business?”

Cricket couldn't remember the last time someone had a snotty attitude towards her since it didn't happen very often. If someone is ever mean to you, just walk away. Nothing bad will happen if you walk away, she remembered her mum saying before she boarded the Hogwarts Express. The lion glanced at the boy's cheek, and then at her hand. She hopped Starkey hadn't seen her. He crossed his arms and looked at her in an insulting way. What if I- no. Don't do it. You have no history of hurting people and you shouldn't start now. But it's one simple- NO! Cricket Aila Mercury you can not slap a harmless boy! Cricket's train of thought was out of order and she was stuck on what to do, or say.

Cricket felt that she should obey her mum's orders and simply stay out of trouble. She spun around and watched the laces of her black boots drag along the concrete floors as she solemnly stepped away from Starkey. But she stopped. The Gryffindor looked up and closed her eyes. I'm sorry mum, but I'm done being the nice girl. She went back up to boy as her body turned cold. She stared at him and gathered up all her might into her right hand.

It was over faster than it was started. She did it, she had hit someone. Her hands were thrown over her own mouth in shock as her eyes widened. "I-I didn't mean to- I mean...I'm sorry for what I did. But I just had to show you that I shouldn't be messed with."

Wyatt didn’t see it coming. That girl (he didn’t even know her name yet) was walking away! At the time, he was disappointed. This girl was interesting, and Wyatt wanted to know what made her tick, and how she would react to his comment, but it wasn’t long before he got his reaction, although it wasn’t one he wanted. He didn’t expect anything else from this girl as she began walking away. He should’ve seen it coming. He could be so dull.

The Slytherin wasn’t a stranger to being slapped, or pain in general, but that didn’t mean he was begging for it. Maybe he shouldn’t have said what he said, even if it wasn’t that mean. Maybe he used a certain tone? Still, he didn’t think he deserved to get hit. He felt himself tearing up but blinked it away slowly, as to not look suspicious. He was not going to cry in front of this girl. Her voice broke the silence. He held his cheek.

"I-I didn't mean to- I mean... I'm sorry for what I did. But I just had to show you that I shouldn't be messed with."

Wyatt scoffed, still holding the left side of his face, where he’d been slapped. “Just when I thought you might have been different- maybe even better than your Gryffindor peers,” he paused as he struggled to piece together the right words. “You’re just like them. A cruel, selfish, horrible brat.” He took a few shaky breaths in. “Your apology means nothing to me. You’re pathetic.” His voice quivered on pathetic, still, he would not cry.

Not once did Wyatt think of hitting her, but he was ruthless with his words. “If one small comment makes you angry enough to hurt people then you’re one cowardly lion.” When Wyatt was saying this, he was basically dumping the things he’s wanted to say to every person who’d ever hurt him onto this one Gryffindor girl. He didn’t even know for sure if she was a Gryffindor, but she definitely acted like one, the brat. He swallowed.

Cricket felt like she had come off too strong. You don't have to hit someone to show them that you shouldn't be messed with, she repeated to herself. The boy's face looked hot and tinted with fury as he tightly clasped his hand over where the young lion had hit him. “Just when I thought you might have been different- maybe even better than your Gryffindor peers,” said Starkey as Cricket, still in shock, could feel her throat start to run dry.

“You’re just like them. A cruel, selfish, horrible brat.” Cricket could feel her nose start to turn red as she heard the boy's words of wrath. “Your apology means nothing to me. You’re pathetic,” he replied, voice quivering on the word 'pathetic.' He's right, was all Cricket could think. “If one small comment makes you angry enough to hurt people then you’re one cowardly lion.” Her heart burned. Her legs a weak feeling. Her eyes were hot. Is this what pain felt like? How could words hurt from a boy you've never met? Cricket's voice was shaking and her focus was all upon the wall the boy was leaning on.

"You're right. I am a brat. I grew up getting bullied and harassed by my peers at Muggle school. My mum and dad were always there to tell them off. My parent's spoiled me and treated me like a princess because they felt bad for me." She felt a single tear run down her left cheek. "I never learned to use my words to solve a problem. I've always depened on my actions to solve them for me." Cricket looked up and stared into the boy's eyes. "Thank you for putting me in my place. I deserve everything you said to me. I'm sorry for hitting you, and I understand if you won't except my apology." Cricket had whispered that last part. She realized that she was now not fully crying, but on the verge of doing so. As fast as she could, she straightened herself up and tried to wipe away the tears that had fallen.

"I'll leave if you'd like."

Just because Wyatt meant every word he said, doesn’t mean he said it to the right person. He was unloading all of this garbage and hate he felt during his time in the world onto this girl. Everything his father had said, everything those muggle bullies did, everything Wyatt endured from those Gryffindor bullies dumped onto this one girl. Wyatt was the villain of this story and he was well aware of it. He stood up straight and put his hands in his pockets. “I-”

"You're right. I am a brat. I grew up getting bullied and harassed by my peers at Muggle school. My mum and dad were always there to tell them off. My parents spoiled me and treated me like a princess because they felt bad for me." The girl started crying blood-red tears. Apparently she was a dhampir, interesting to note, but what Wyatt really didn't like was the fact she was crying at all. He always wondered how people let themselves cry. There was always the option to hold back. It was harder, but he didn’t want to look like an idiot so he did it anyway. This girl had no shame.

"I never learned to use my words to solve a problem. I've always depended on my actions to solve them for me." Cricket looked up and stared into the boy's eyes. He immediately felt wildly uncomfortable. Wyatt was never a fan of eye contact, it was a little scary. Even in the movies, when a character would break the fourth wall and stare into the camera, it made him uncomfortable. It brought him into something he was happy being detached from. Wyatt was happy being detached from situations.

By the time the girl began talking again, Wyatt’s gaze had long averted to the ground. He thought that look made him look like an injured dog- well that’s what he’d been told. He thought it was pathetic of himself, but he didn’t want to be uncomfortable... Wyatt tapped his foot twice as he thought of what to do. Eventually, he raised his head and looked the girl in the… between her eyes. He would avoid meeting her eyes, but he could still pretend. He was concerned she would notice, but he didn’t want to be uncomfortable.

"Thank you for putting me in my place. I deserve everything you said to me. I'm sorry for hitting you, and I understand if you won't accept my apology." Well, now he was expected to make a choice. This was one of those times Wyatt wished he could just disappear, or sink into the ground. Like the times when just melting into the universe was easier than having to live in the moment. Those little moments made up most of the day for Wyatt. He never really cared to be alive at all. He was here because he had to be.

"I'll leave if you'd like." Though he heard what she said, he ignored it completely. A therapist could say he heard what she said but he didn’t listen. Wyatt tended to ignore little things people would say if he didn’t like what they were saying. For someone who had to learn to deal with reality from such an early age, he certainly did a good job of avoiding it. Or at least ignoring it half of the time. He could have had a more interesting outlook on life if he tried. His mind just didn’t work that way. Too young.

“I don’t regret or take back anything that I said,” he began, as he buried his hands further into his pockets. “I think it’s… good… that you can own up to being a brat. Still, you can’t just go around hitting people before they even know your name. Maybe I started it, but I never hit anyone. And I never will, if I’m lucky.” Even though Wyatt Starkey had no trouble lying, he didn’t lie once, there. He didn’t want to be anything like his father, and so he never hit anyone. You may not have believed it if you saw Starkey, but he was telling the truth.

“I deserved to be hit just as you deserved to be told off. This doesn’t mean I’ll stop being an awful person, that’s too deeply rooted in my personality.” If you couldn’t tell, Wyatt Starkey wasn’t a big fan of Wyatt Starkey. “And I’ll still be terribly rude to you, after this. No doubt about it.” He took a deep breath in. “Anyway. Thank you for hitting me, probably,” said the snake, ever so quietly. Almost as if he thought someone was spying on their conversation. Though, in fairness, him saying “thank you” to anyone or anything would ruin his reputation.

“Though, you should know if you ever so much as lay a pinky on my skin again, I will…” He paused. He took this time to meet her icy blue eyes, even though it made him uncomfortable. He needed to be intimidating. At least a little bit. “Personally…” He paused again. “Skin you.” He wrapped his threat up with a small, uncharacteristic grin that lasted half a second.

Cricket's shock had moved from slapping the boy to crying in front of him. The girl checked her hands and saw a few trickles of blood. Why would I do that, why would I cry when it wasn't necessary? Why would I cry in general? And in front of such a cute bo-, Cricket had flinched at her thoughts. Did she really think this boy was cute? After what he had just said to her? She quickly tied the laces of her black boots and was about to leave when she heard the boy speak.

“I don’t regret or take back anything that I said. I think it’s… good… that you can own up to being a brat. Still, you can’t just go around hitting people before they even know your name. Maybe I started it, but I never hit anyone. And I never will, if I’m lucky.” The boy seemed to be digging for something in his pockets. Cricket understood what he was saying. You can't just hit people because you don't know what to do, take note of that, Crick.

“I deserved to be hit just as you deserved to be told off. This doesn’t mean I’ll stop being an awful person, that’s too deeply rooted in my personality.” The young lion giggled at his words. “Anyway. Thank you for hitting me, probably.” Cricket couldn't make out all the words of his sentence since he said it in a low whisper. She could only understand the words 'thank' and 'hitting.' She realized, even though she would look him in the eyes, Starkey wouldn't return the favor. Not that I have a problem with that, he might just struggle with that sort of contact.

“Though, you should know if you ever so much as lay a pinky on my skin again, I will…” He paused. Leading his eyes from wherever he was looking, to meet her ocean eyes. “Personally…skin you." Cricket's eyes widened as the boy was threatening her. She had snickered a bit. He really thinks he can scare me, can't he?

The Gryffindor crossed her arms and stood up straight. "Oh, to be skinned by the infamous Starkey. You can skin me anytime you'd like." As soon as she realized what she had said, her face went red, and her pale skin wasn't helping. Trying to stay tough, she ignored what she had said and spoke in a brighter tone. "I like you." She stuck out a hand which was covered by a few rings, "The name's Mercury. Cricket Mer-" Cricket started to feel a bit queasy. She glanced at the sky and noticed the sun was out. She had been given a scar, not once, but twice due to the sun. She rushed her next sentence as she looked back down at the so called, 'intimidating' boy.

"Mercury. Is there uh- a shady place to sit? I'm quite sensitive to the sun and I wouldn't want more accidents."

"You can skin me anytime you'd like."

That was definitely a strange sentence, but Wyatt didn’t understand what her intent was until the girl’s face went red. Was this dhampir… flirting? The Snake blinked. No one had ever flirted with him before, it was a strange thing. It made him feel uncomfortable, he wasn’t used to someone looking at him the way the dhampir looked at him now. She didn’t seem phased by his intimidation either, which was different. This girl was different. Wyatt was so confused, he forgot to mask how he felt.

He just stood there, eyes squinted and confused, and his head slightly tilted to the side like a puppy. He knew he wasn’t going to say the next word. "I like you." The dhampir said it like she meant it to be a friendly thing. Wyatt blinked again, and by the time he opened his eyes, his mask was back on. The unreadable expression had returned. Desperately, Wyatt tried to convince himself that the girl wasn’t flirting, and she was just being funny. Friendly, even. This girl couldn’t possibly like Wyatt Starkey. Who could?

"The name's Mercury," said Miss Mercury as he stretched out a hand decorated with rings. Wyatt shook it politely. "Cricket Mer-" she stopped abruptly, and tilted her head to look up at the sky. Oh right, he thought. The dhampir can’t be in the sun this long. She looked so uneasy, Wyatt almost felt bad for her. Keyword, almost. This was still the girl who slapped him because she didn’t like what he said. Wyatt somehow didn’t hate this girl with a passion though. Her name was Cricket, apparently. He’d comment on that later.

"Mercury," she finished. "Is there uh- a shady place to sit? I'm quite sensitive to the sun and I wouldn't want more accidents." Wyatt was desperate to know about other accidents. Being a parselmouth, people with “special talents” interested him. At Hogwarts, everyone had a “thing.” A talent, an interest, something that made then different and Wyatt needed to know everyone’s thing. The thing was, he didn’t want people to know his. Wyatt Starkey is a huge hypocrite. And he’s well aware of it.

Wyatt answered with a short nod. “There’s about a million trees surrounding the castle, I’m sure they’ll allow you to sit under one of them,” said the Snake, as he shrugged. He jerked his chin to the shadiest tree near them and walked past Cricket. He got to the tree first and sat under the shade. Remembering he never told Cricket (hah) his name, he introduced himself. “My full name's Wyatt Starkey... but I think you knew that.” There was more talk about him in the school than he'd like, mostly about the way he acted to his peers. He wasn't the nicest person.

“You don't want any more accidents?” The Slytherin asked curiously, with one eyebrow raised.
