Tessa smiled. As she read the invitation, she knew exactly what she was going to bring.
It had all started since she was a baby, her grandmother cooking her famous glazed sweet potatoes whenever she visited. They tasted like home, like comfort. Until her grandmother passed, then it tasted bitter, like she would never taste it again.

But how hard could it be, it was just sweet potatoes. She started methodically. First, mixing the sauce from my grandmothers recipe book. First the sugar, caramel, salt, vinegar, cinnamon…..the ingredients went on and on. Soon, after half an hour, the sauce was ready.

Tessa then cut the sweet potatoes, right into hearts, just like her grandmother used to do. Finally, she was done! She figured there would be a lot of food and had only made 10 portions. She tasted a little of the food. It tasted so alike it sent shivers up her spine. It felt as though she was young again, her grandmother cooking for her in her kitchen.

She made her way down to the potluck. Happily swinging her dish. She couldn’t wait for the potluck. Suddenly, crash. She tripped over something and crashed to the ground. Bringing the dish down with her. Tessa groaned. Her hand had a cut and her knee was scraped.

Curse her clumsiness, since young, Tessa was clumsy. Like unnaturally clumsy. From, tripping over her own two feet or dropping anything in her hands, it was safe to say this was not her first time. However, this time it didn’t seem to be just her fault. A blue notebook laid on the floor. Tessa inwardly grumbled, wondering how weird it would look if she started talking to the book out loud.

Tessa knelt down, picking up the book and turning it over in her hands. It looked like a plain old notebook. Half the students at Hogwarts had this notebook which was sold at diagonal alley. Tessa turned the first page, expecting a name or anything that could help identify the owner.

Turning the page over, Tessa gasped. Inside was relentless mean comments. Like a bully in pages. There were about 3 different handwritings. Of one, Tessa recognised. Her roommate. How could she do this? The comments were about another classmates and were downright cruel.

One of the comments called her poor, ugly, and friendless. Tears welled behind Tessa’s eyes. Hurriedly, she grabbed the dish which had miraclously been unscathed. She ran down to the grounds, not knowing what to do. She stuffed the notebook in her robes, and frowned.

She knew her roommate was a little bossy, but they had bonded and Tessa had never imagined she could do something as mean as this.
What should she do. Wait. She was still in disbelief. Could it be a prank.
A practical joke planned to be harmless. It was near Halloween after all, the possibility was possible.

How could she find out? Maybe the best way was to ask her. Yes, that was the best way. It prevented misunderstandings and could clear up the issue. Yes definitely a misunderstanding. She chided herself for thinking otherwise.

She made her way to the potluck, and upon arriving, immediately locked on her roommate. What a coincidence she frowned. Just the person I was looking for. She quickly sat the sweet potatoes on the picnic area with the other dishes and tried to make her way to her, this was unfortunately not easy. As she slipped through the crowd, her friends spotted her. As she tried to mingle and escape uncomfortably. She caught her roommate in the corner of her eye, smiling and laughing while talking to her classmate, that she had been bullying in the notebook.

Tessa heaved a sigh of relief. It was just a joke then!

Aster smiled happily at Maya. "Thank you! I made the sweater myself." She looked down proudly at her sweater, then took a big bite of the cinnamon cookie. It was amazing, with the perfect amount of cinnamon and a delicious texture.

"Those cookies are so good! You did a great job on these!" Aster was tempted to go back for more, but there were so many people that she didn't want to take too many cookies. "I brought lentil and vegetable soup. My mum always makes it when it's harvest time, so it reminds me of fall. Fall is my favorite season. What's your favorite season?" She took a sip of her cider.

"Xio made pumpkin juice cider. It's over there in that big barrel." Aster gestured towards the barrel of cider. "Do you know Xio Arcana? She's a Ravenclaw, like me. It's really good! We can go get some if you want to try it."

Aster quickly finished the rest of the food on her plate. She especially enjoyed the apple crisp, but the cinnamon cookie was her favorite. "Do you want to get more food? Or would you like to play a game? Or we could just stay here and talk!" Aster was just happy to be outside, enjoying the fresh air and spending time with her friends.

The Fall Equinox was one of the many events Ophelia had felt obligated by herself to participate in, which were held in Hogwarts. Ever since her first year, the raven had realized that the creativity and fun activities planned by the prefects and professors of the castle ought to be never-ending. She'd basically lost count of the times she was a participant at any of the events. If the activities were fun, and if the people weren't killing each other, then there'd be no problems; with the event, or with the participants between the organizers. The Fall Equinox wasn't just another occasion, though; it was the first one where the attendees were meant to bring the dishes with themselves. Extraordinary, yet challenging and thought-provoking. Of course, Ophelia didn't have the slightest idea about how she could cook something. If someone wanted her to do so, they'd lost their minds! You could give the raven the whole kitchen and tell her to cook a basic dish and you'd receive no kitchen at all, let alone a burnt down one! But again, give her the whole kitchen and tell her to bake the most complex pastry; she'd give you the most delicious baked good you could imagine from her.

With that ability, she managed to decide on making cinnamon rolls. These she'd done only three times, but she was confident she could manage to make them a fourth time, and hopefully they don't settle to humiliate her and turn out good looking and tasty. From her previous experiences with different pastries, some that looked hideous didn't necessarily taste as bad as they appeared. So, now that she knew what she wanted to bring with her to the potluck, she had to think of how to supply the ingredients and where to bake.

Where to bake, where to bake. I need a place to bake.

Had the wall suddenly not opened up a random door with a big, supplied kitchen right in front of her, she wouldn't have believed something like this would, or could, happen at Hogwarts... or the magical world in general. So, the third problem was also solved, now the second one. She wrote an owl to her mother, asking for the ingredients to be sent to her in a parcel. For so many people there, Melika had to owl all the ingredients twice. Many guests meant you had to be prepared, baked a bit more in case someone wanted a second piece. Nevertheless, more cinnamon rolls were always better.

After baking lots of rolls for the potluck, Ophelia found herself marching toward the Hogwarts entrance with the containers in both her hands, somehow the rolls weren't sliding off, but she wasn't complaining. When she left to the grounds and bumped into a first-year Ravenclaw.

"Ah- yes, no worries. The rolls have proved to be tough." She joked, obviously the rolls weren't hard. "Are you alright? What do you have there?" The raven asked curiously, trying to peek to see what the Ravenclaw -Adrian? Aaron?-, yes, Aaron she believed he was called, had with him.

Note: Vale has achromatopsia and uses special contact lenses to see. She is also a burn survivor.

Vale realized, perhaps too late, she'd end up coming across a school of fish rather than one singular one. Her words drowned out amongst others. And just like so, she lost interest in the rumbles of noises-

"Might that cauldron belong to you? It's crushing my cookies."

Vale's eyes snapped up, twisting quickly to find a younger girl feeling courageous enough to even direct a comment towards Vale herself. Vale stood up from the table, staring down at the girl with red eyes. A blink, and Vale twisted her head once more to observe her cauldron. She didn't speak, slowly dragging herself off to the table that held her cauldron, and gave it a lift to confirm the crumbles of cookies that lay at the bottom, and the delicate plate that was choosen.

Oh.

Oh dear.

Vale kept looking back and forth from the smashed cookies to the bottom of her cauldron. Eventually, she turned her head back to @Calypso Lovelace. "Uh...oopsies! Guess the contacts still need some light adjusting! Uh..." Vale snatched one of the smashed cookies, in hopes of finding some manner of solution to the err. Those that wander up to Vale willingly usually were the ones Vale watches for.

She hurried to eat one. Hm, sweet. Not going to be good for Vale's stomach later.

But still, Vale faked a smile. "Very delicious! Erm! What a shame that I made such a vicious error! Uh...what to do...what to do..." Vale scurried about with her cauldron, hoping for an empty spot on the table. Ah, the plate matched the table in lighting. Well, she was sure now as to why she didn't see them in the first place.

With a quick hand wipe to make sure absolutely nothing lay on the table, Vale plopped her cauldron there. She clapped her hands clean and almost already forgot why she did so in the first place. Vale froze, only turning her head back to the younger girl.
"So, uh, I'm sure your smashed cookies will be a hit with the crowd?"

A Glimpse Beyond

──── ✧ ────

By the time Diana made her way outside the last traces of daylight were already beginning to soften the grounds. The air had taken on the unmistakable chill of autumn but was cool enough that she was glad she'd brought her cardigan along after classes. She tucked a loose strand of dark brown hair behind her ear as she followed the path which lead toward the gathering and her muted grey green eyes took in the scene ahead. It was rather difficult to miss.

Fairy lights have been strung between splintered poles with their gentle glow beginning to stand out as evening approached. Dried orange and yellow leaves had been woven among the fairy lights with some occasionally caught in the breeze before fluttering back toward the ground. Picnic benches stretched across the grass in uneven rows with each being covered with long tablecloths that were quickly becoming crowded with dishes.

As she looked over everything Diana slowed for a moment. There was something strangely comforting about seeing so many different foods gathered together. She could already spot pies, pastries, cakes, cookies, and plenty of other things which she couldn't quite identity from where she stood. The smell of cinnamon and baked goods drifted through the crisp air which made the whole gathering feel warmer than the temperature actually was.

She carefully adjusted the dish that she was carrying in both hands. The cheese and herb scones had been one of the simpler things she could've brought but she'd still spent enough time making sure they turned out properly. They were arranged neatly on a plate with their tops being slightly brown and with the faint scent of herbs rising from them. Diana carefully placed them down on the table when she finally found an open spot. "There." she murmured quietly to herself. She glanced at the other dishes and couldn't help briefly wondering if anyone would actually choose one of her scones given the fact that there are so many sweeter options available. Despite this she'd still brought them to share and that was what mattered.

With the food taken care of Diana finally allowed herself to look around properly. There was plenty to do. Corn hole had been set up nearby and miniature summoner's court caught her attention next. She wasn't sure exactly what to expect from either activity but that only made her more curious. A little farther away students were gathered around the leaf pressing station and were examining different leaves and deciding which ones they wanted to preserve. That one seemed to be particularly interesting. Diana had always liked autumn leaves. There was something about them that made the changing season feel tangible. Every leaf seemed to have its own shape and its own pattern and even its own little imperfections because no leaf is perfect. She wandered toward the leaf pressing station and paused just before it to look down at several leaves scattered across the grass.

One of the leaves had landed near her shoe and its edges were slightly curled inward and its color being somewhere between gold and orange. She crouched down to pick it up. For a moment she simply turned it over in her fingers and studied the veins running through it. It was an ordinary leaf well she assumed it was. Diana faintly smiled before she stood again and carried it with her toward the activity. She wasn't sure how long she'd stay at the leaf pressing station. There was plenty of evening still left after all and the quilts that were laid out for later star watching had already caught her attention. The thought of sitting outside beneath the autumn sky once it grew dark sounded rather nice. Though for now she was content to wander.

She carefully tucked the leaf between her fingers and glanced around at the other students arriving and settling into celebration. She didn't recognize everyone but that wasn't unusual even though it's her second year at Hogwarts. With so many people gathered together there were bound to be familiar faces mixed amongst strangers. Diana wasn't particularly bothered by either. She had come to enjoy the evening and to try something new and perhaps even learn a little more about traditions which surrounded the equinox. And if someone happened to approach her along the way she certainly wouldn't mind the company.

"You made the sweater yourself? That's amazing and very creative!" Maya said to Aster while she was looking at her sweater proudly.

The slytherin grinned happily, also proudly when Aster said her cinnamon cookies were amazing. "Thank you!" she said to Aster's compliment "I'm glad you like it and i did a good job" She said then took a bite of her own cinnamon cookie. "Guess we are both creative in our own ways"

Aster said she brought lentil and vegetable soup for the fall event and Maya considered silently if she should get a soup from her. But she felt like she had so many things on her plate already.

"Fall is my favorite season too" Maya beamed when she was asked her favorite season.

As her friend gestured towards the barrel of cider Maya squinted in thought. "You know, I don't think I had pumpkin juice cider before, or at least I don't remember. And I do know Xio! I talked to her before, are you guys friends?"

Maya said that she indeed wanted to try the Pumpkin Juice cider. "Lets go!" she said. "I wanna try the pumpkin one and maybe we can play a game later!" She then looked around the see what type of fall related games they could play. There was corn-hole, a court and leaf-pressing. She was unsure what she wanted to play. "Um, what would you like to play? I guess I am conflicted between the corn-hole and the court, or we can play something else?"

Jada, as had happened before, had heard of the event through word of mouth before having encountered the poster. She remembered thinking it was very pretty, whoever had made it had not put much effort into it but it still had a certain charm to it. The hand-drawn leaves framed a poem half obscured by notes and papers posted up beside it. Not usually being one for poetry, it had taken her a minute to decode it before coming to the conclusion that it must be an invitation. An invitation for an event where one should "bring food". Even if she wasn't thrilled by the idea of having to share her food with others, she sure wanted to try what the others had brought.

Going back to her old habits she had picked up the apron and whisk she'd neglected for so long and gotten to work. Baking was something the girl had always done. For birthdays, gatherings or simply as a little treat for herself she'd made everything from cakes to cookies to macarons. An hour of scouring the library had won her a recipe book, a few more minutes had landed her on fall flavoured goodies. Apple strudel, pumpkin pie and all the good stuff. Eventually, she'd settled on cinnamon rolls. They weren't easy to make but easy to share and therefore the perfect "food" for the gathering.

She'd searched the school from head to toe for some secret entrance to the kitchens or someplace that would offer her an oven and ingredients. Her search had landed her on the fifth floor corridor, desperate, she must’ve walked past the door three or four times before noticing that it had appeared. Jada could’ve sworn it hadn’t been there earlier. The room of requirement she thought to herself. The room that reveals itself only to those who need it. She opened the door with a click of the handle to find a fully stocked kitchen filled with everything she could dream of needing.

After hours of mixing, kneading, baking and decorating they were finally ready. Admittedly, they weren’t perfect but if people were gonna complain they could go find themselves someone who would listen. She covered the tray in with a cotton cloth before heading out to the grounds where the others were supposedly gathered.

The trip had proved more challenging than expected, balancing a tray of cinnamon rolls down five flights of stairs without running into people and dropping it was harder than it had seemed it her head. She spotted the people already gathered on picnic mats with low tables as she walked across the grassy ground. Maybe she was late. Maybe they were all just early. It didn’t really bother her, she wasn’t here to meet people she’d just wanted to pig out fall-themed foods, hopefully mostly unnoticed by the other attendees.

Joining a group seated more to the side, she put down her tray alongside the other dishes. Turns out she wasn’t the only one who’d thought of cinnamon rolls because there was already a half empty rack of them there. @Ophelia Vanderbilt Having nobody to talk to she just sat awkwardly for a while, watching the others and smiling politely whenever anyone looked her way. As the minutes passed, she started waking around and looking for familiar faces. She found a few she knew from class, quidditch or other encounters. Munching on a cookie somebody or other had brought with them (There was a surprising amount of them), she absently sat back down. Closing her eyes momentarily she felt the autumn breeze on her face and the chatter of her classmates merged into the background. It was peaceful sometimes, to be alone even when not actually isolated.
