This thread is part of the EXPLORE THE WILDERNESS EVENT.
You must have participated in the tent set up errand to participate and have signed up.
Gather in the Wild- Potions Competition
This was the first competition the students would participate in, and this reality was especially clear in the nervous buzz that vibrated throughout the crowd. Every school was present here. Though this competition was not meant to be a space where each school presented their best and showed off their magical prowess, perhaps it would turn out this way.

Emery stepped onto the stage that had been set up for him and the spectators and casted the classic amplifying charm. He spoke to the competitors with a strong, firm voice,
“Welcome to the first competition of this exploration experience. In front of you are the cauldrons and heating tools that you need. However, your job as competitors is to find ingredients or replacements for these ingredients in the wilderness of Uagadou. You will be digging, cutting, and fighting for these ingredients, so hopefully you brought the right clothes and tools. You have three hours to find and brew these potions, competitors. You may begin.”

With the competition started, Emery walked over to the judges, the headmaster and headmistresses of the respective schools, along with a few revered potion masters who had graduated from Durmstrang and Uagadou. He winked and said, “Are you ready for a mess of potions? These students have likely never done bush brewing. It’s quite fun to mess with them though.”

Elara stood near the cauldron with her hands resting at her sides. She looked around at the other students, wondering what they had brought with them for the competition. When Headmaster Albrecht began explaining the rules, Elara turned her attention towards him. Three hours to find the ingredients and brew the potions. She looked at the cauldron in front of her, then towards the wilderness beyond the competition area. It was a lot to do in three hours. Hopefully, that's enough time. She checked her bag before leaving. Once she was ready, Elara headed towards the trees. She had no idea where the ingredients might be, so she started by looking at the plants growing nearby. Some were familiar from Herbology. Others were not. She stopped beside a few of them, trying to remember if she had seen them before. Nothing came to mind. She moved on, walking a little further into the wilderness. The ground was uneven, with fallen leaves and small branches scattered across it. Elara stepped over a fallen branch and glanced between the trees. There were bushes on one side and taller plants on the other. She took out her notebook and wrote down a few things she remembered from Potions. It might be useful later. I should probably start with what I know. Elara put the notebook away and continued along the edge of the trees. She checked beneath a few leaves and around the roots of the nearby plants, but nothing seemed useful yet. She stood up and looked further ahead. Maybe there is something there. Elara adjusted her bag and continued along the trees, still looking for anything that might be useful.

Bella wasn't competitive. Well, she wanted to win, but more than that, she wanted to have fun. That's what she was telling herself nervously the morning of the first competition -- the potion one.

Bella could see so many students from different schools, and she marveled at how events like these brought students from all over the world together.

As Headmaster Emery stood up to the stage, Bella fell silent. She looked at the cauldrons and heating tools in front of her, and she knew what ingredients she needed to get.

2 Drops of Lethe River Water, 2 Valerian Sprigs, 2 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 4 Mistletoe Berries

She was making a Forgetfulness Potion. And she had three hours to find everything she needed, come back, and make the potion itself. That seemed like a long time, but it wasn't.

Bella glanced at the judges, who were the leaders of the schools, along with several famous potion masters that Bella may or may not have heard of.

Seeing everybody rush ahead, Bella grabbed her small notebook and her quill, jotting down quick notes on everything she remembered on those plants before she forget them. After finishing, Bella decided that she should start off on the path heading into the trees, as it seemed more likely to find the berries and sprigs there. If she was lucky, she might find the other ones as well.

Bella froze when she heard a noise ahead of her, only to realize that she recognized the girl who's footsteps made the noise.

"Hey! Elara! Wait up!" she called out to her friend, rushing forward. "I know it's a competition and everything, but would you like to work together for finding the ingredients? We can go our separate ways after we find the ingredients we need, but we can help each other for the foraging part! Especially if we see some animals we may need to fight off...What do you think?"

Rosamund didn't really know what made her sign up for the competition—she never even liked competing in anything—but she would be damned if she didn't put her best effort to it.

At least she already knew how to brew the Forgetfulness Potion. They've already covered it in Potions, and she did make an effort to have extensive notes on it; she's pretty sure it would just be poetic irony to forget about something like a potion that would make you forget.

The real challenge, as the professor said, was the foraging of the ingredients needed.

Luckily, she made the fortunate decision yesterday to cover as much grounds as she could within the accessible areas. She wondered whether it was intentional to have them trek the areas freely knowing that some of them would be signing up to basically locate potions ingredients out in the wild. How clever, she thought.

She recalled whether she'd seen mistletoe berries or valerian sprig yesterday. Based on her path yesterday, she decided that her best bet would be the western areas where the giant heather trees were located and the southern areas where the bamboo forest was. She'd take her chances with the denser, foggy forest due north when she's exhausted those areas.

And not more than one and a half hours of foraging too. She still had to brew the potion correctly, and she'd want extra time for that.

Strategy in mind, she immediately took off to the west as soon as the professor gave them the go-ahead.

As Emery explained the rules Diana stood quietly amongst the other competitors with her attention fixed onto the cauldron and heating tools which waited for them. Three hours. Find the ingredients and return and then brew the potion. It sounded straightforward when he said it that way but Diana suspected that the wilderness would have other ideas, just like how it did when Diana was at Castelobruxo last year for the Capture the Flag tournament.

She glanced down at the list of ingredients which she had to memorize. She needed Lethe River Water, Valerian Sprigs, Standard Ingredient, and Mistletoe Berries. The potion itself was familiar enough. She had studied the Forgetfulness Potion last year and the brewing instructions were something she'd worry about later. For now her problem were the ingredients.

Diana adjusted her bag and started away from the competition area the moment they were given permission to begin. She didn't rush blindly into the wilderness instead she took a moment to look around and allowed the first wave of competitors to spread out ahead of her. Uagadou's surroundings were still unfamiliar and she didn't want to overlook something useful simply because she was too focused on moving quickly. She followed a less crowded path into the trees while her eyes moved from the ground to the surrounding vegetation. Some plants were familiar from Herbology while others were completely foreign and most likely native to Uagadou. Diana crouched beside one particularly unusual cluster of leaves and studied its shape and color before deciding it wasn't anything that she recognized from her Potions notes.

She continued onward and carefully checked beneath leaves and around exposed rocks and along the edges of bushes. Every so often she paused to listen to the sounds around her. The wilderness was far louder than Hogwarts gardens and was filled with unfamiliar rustling and distant calls which made it difficult to tell what was harmless and was wasn't. Diana still kept moving. There was no point in panicking over everything which she didn't recognize. She simply needed to continue being observant and remembered what she knew and hope that somewhere ahead there was something useful. With that in mind she continued deeper into the wilderness and kept her eyes open for anything that might help her complete her potion.

As Headmaster Albrecht explained the rules Latoya listened carefully with her attention shifting to the cauldron in front of her and the wilderness beyond the competition area. A potions competition was exciting enough on its own but having to actually search the wilderness for the ingredients made it even more exciting. This'll be Latoya's very first time brewing a potion outside of Tenūsa and despite her being Half-Veela she a muggle-born witch so she hopes to not mess this up. She glanced down at the list again. She needed to find Lethe River Water, valerian sprigs, standard ingredient, and mistletoe berries. She knew some of those from Potions though finding them out here was going to be a very different story. Knowing her, she might get sidetracked by all the nature around her!

Once the competition began Latoya basically happily ran toward the trees. She was in her element, she was in what she called her second home (Tenūsa is technically her fourth home because her actual home is her first home, second is nature, and third is the ocean). She definitely wasn't interested in rushing through the wilderness and hoping she'd stumble across something useful. There were far too many unfamiliar plants around her (which she'll take her time admiring) and she didn't want to accidentally pick something that looked like an ingredient. Instead she moved slowly but happily along the edges of the trees and occasionally crouched down to inspect the plants which grew near the ground. Her love for nature made the search feel almost like an adventure on its own. She carefully brushed a few leaves aside before examining the steams and berries beneath them before deciding they weren't what she needed. "Curu mai...""Come on..." she murmured before glancing at her list again. "E dodonu me tiko e dua na ka veivakayagataki e na yasana oqo.""There has to be something useful around here."

She continued deeper into the wilderness and kept her eye out for anything familiar. Valerian seemed like a good place to start since she remembered studying it in Herbology. Mistletoe berries would hopefully be easier to recognize as well as they are a common Muggle plant found during Christmas! Latoya paused beside a cluster of plants and studied them carefully before reaching for her notebook. Rather than immediately picking anything she made a quick note about their appearance. If she couldn't identify something then there was no point in taking chances.

Potions Competition Explore the Wilderness
OWEN LOCHRIDGE seer
\\ Irish Accent | English [#a9882d] | Gaeilge [#a77406]

09.24.2026
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Owen had no business signing up for a competition in potioneering. His idea of potion making involved scavenging the gardens around his family's estate, throwing things together haphazardly into a cauldron, and chancing fate that the entire thing might just blow up in his face. And in the very unlikely circumstance when it did not, the next challenge invariably involved trying to figure out how to slip a dose into his brother's food without the governess finding out. He had yet to be successful in that endeavour, but it didn't mean he hadn't continued trying even as recently as the summer camp in an effort to get revenge for being publicly pushed to the ground.

Perhaps it was the fear of missing out that had driven the youngest Lochridge to pen his name as a contestant. Or maybe it was the delicious notion of being able to stick it to his brother if he somehow managed to place—or better yet, win. Anrai would be furious. Owen could already hear the tirade of how undeserving he would be. And on the flip-side, Owen would bask in the irony of how he, a novice with a significant disdain for study, had fortuitously managed to not only make a small name for himself, but produce a fully functional potion so soon into his first year.

It was with that scene in mind, a preemptively triumphant grin plastered across his features, that Owen arrived on scene. That smile widened even further when a man—presumably one of the professors—explained the twist of the contest. "You're joking!"

The words blurted forth before he could stop himself, and he found himself looking around to see if the other students (mostly others who had been sorted at the beginning of the year at the same time he had) shared in his enthusiasm. What a stroke of luck. This was just like what he did at home! Of course, he hadn't the faintest idea regarding the local flora and fauna, but neither did he possess any real knowledge of it back home either. Trial and error and a not-so-insignificant dose of lucky intuition: Owen's recipe for success.

There was no hesitation when the call to begin sounded. He raced forward, sandals slapping happily between feet and ground. Twigs snapped as he barreled through some sparse brush, beelining it for the denser bushes. That was definitely where he was more likely to find the good stuff. Squatting, he started digging around, prying branches apart to stick his head into the shaded areas. A few beetles skittered out of the penetrating rays of sun. Owen swiped one up, bringing it to eye-level for inspection.

It had an almost auburn carapace that flecked copper in the light. He definitely would have used it in a potion back home, but sense reminded him that he had been provisioned with a list. He dug it out of his pocket, unfurled the crumpled parchment against his leg, and... no beetle. Hm. Almost disappointed, he considered tossing the critter back into the bush, but tucked it into a vial at his waist instead. For good measure. Then stood to inspect the list, turning on the spot to survey his immediate surroundings and see if anything captured his attention.

Alfie didn’t like competing in contests he couldn’t win. So naturally a potions competition seemed like a good one to pass. His early performance in Potions class had been promising, but realistically he'd been at it for less than a month now. What hope could he have in a competition open to all ages?

Later, however, when he saw the sign-up list, he couldn’t help but notice how many of the names belonged to his own classmates, some of whom Alfie knew to be much worse at potion brewing than he was. (Owen? Seriously?) It was then that he had a change of heart about competing. After all, he didn’t have to win the competition to be celebrated among his peers. He only had to beat his peers. That set the bar lower.

On the morning of the competition Alfie arrived well rested and as prepared as he was able to be. Professor Lesmana was a stickler for preparation and punctuality as well as a bunch of other Type-A sorts of things. Luckily, Alfie was pretty Type-A himself. Unfortunately, he had a feeling that bush brewing would involve a lot more improvisation and creativity than Professor Lesmana approved of, not to mention a whole lot less cleanliness.

Alfie was relieved when he saw the brewing set up and read the potion that the younger students would be preparing. Forgetfulness Potion was the very first (and one of the only) potions Alfie had learned in Potions Class. Some of the ingredients were going to be a problem Alfie thought, but he had a hunch he knew where he could find some mistletoe. (At least he hoped what he’d seen was mistletoe.)

action: finding ingredients
The oppressive heat of Uagadou weighed on Denisse's back, glueing the dust from the brushy landscape to her glistening, sweat-moistened skin. Three hours was a generous amount of time for a simple forgetfulness potion, especially when she was used to preparing such a common potion in the comfort of a climate-controlled classroom-but "bush brewing" was an altogether different game.

Her cauldron was placed on the uneven ground, flames licking at its bottom, as she took two drops of Lethe River Water and gently heated it. Twenty seconds later she took the Valerian sprigs, spun her wand three times clockwise, and reminded herself to wait for the long brewing.

Round one was just set-up and gathering, but first round was loud and chaotic and from the get-go, it was a battle of focus. Shouts echoed in the clearing as the other students darted through the jungle line, desperately searching for missing ingredients and wrestling with tools they've never seen before. Denisse kept glancing at the jungle line nervously as the snaps of twigs and branches kept echoing through the jungle line. With her attention distracted from the mind-melting sound of the crowd and the crowd of other first round competitors, Denisse took a deep breath and focused her attention onto her mortar, expertly grinding the mistletoe berries and Standard Ingredient she'd picked up from the jungle line.
