Formal meetings never stopped even after his father had passed. Kullervo had learned to wake up each morning and expect a new person coming to the house to inquire about things he no longer had the patience to pay attention to. Sometimes, meetings required them to travel and Kullervo would be dragged along against his will and forced to behave while simultaneously feeling like his eyes were dried up and bulging out of his skull from the sheer ennui. Even around Christmas time, it never ceased. Within the first week of his school holiday, Kullervo had been informed this morning over breakfast that they were taking such a trip for such a meeting. Not asked. Informed. As such things went. Although, it was not for the conventional business as usual. His mother announced it with a certain sort of enthusiasm that he had never before seen on her. They were set to travel to Scotland to meet with an antique seller as they were selling an antique she had apparently been chasing after for quite some time. Kullervo listened to all the details in silence and with a growing unimpressed expression. Antiques, of all things... It was not as though he objected to his mother having hobbies. In fact, he had noticed she seemed rather lighter as of late. Less restrained. She travelled when she wished, spent time indulging in things she enjoyed, and no longer had to justify her spending her time on frivolous things to anyone. His father certainly would not have allowed it. He supposed that is why she was determined to enjoy it to its fullest. Regardless, that did not mean he wanted to spend an entire day in a different country looking at old furniture... By the time they reached the Portkey, Kullervo had already made his opinion on the matter abundantly clear from the particular brand of silence that comes with the suggestion that one was enduring a personal tragedy. And the journey itself did nothing but further dampen his mood. When they emerged in Edinburgh, his hair was tousled and there was a faint throb of nausea in the pit of his stomach. He groaned quietly and smoothed his hair back down with a single swipe of his palm. And the weather... dreadful. Of course, it was winter, it was to be expected. But he'd much prefer the cold in Finland than the United Kingdom. In Finland, cold was cold. Here, the cold settled deep into his bones and genuinely sent a chill up his spine. His mother, however, appeared utterly delighted. Kullervo groaned quietly again, taking sideways glances at her as they began walking. "You are aware... you could have bought something at home." Kullervo muttered, only making his mother smile. "I wanted this one." "Of course..." The boy sighed, although there was no genuine irritation in his voice. Not yet, at least. Not entirely. And he followed her regardless because he was not about to make his mother upset in a foreign country. Kullervo had never been to Scotland, but he had visited numerous other countries to the point where being somewhere new no longer excited him. He would not get to find any amusement in this trip, it was not a holiday. It was still, technically, a business meeting. Only, it was not one that could be of any use or benefit to him, there were no significant names to make notes of, no potential leads on the one responsible for his father's murder. So it may as well have been a punishment. Kullervo could at least concede that the Scottish landscapes were aesthetically tolerable. Depending on how long they were here for, maybe he could find the time to set up an easel atop a hill and have an afternoon between himself and his paints. He could see himself letting hours dissolve unnoticed as he painted the Scottish Highlands without a single other soul in the vicinity constantly reminding him of his responsibilities. He'd say he needed a proper holiday in between his studies and external expectations if it didn't make him sound like he aged a few decades within a few months. The walk was short, courteous of the Portkey, and they came to a stop in front of the residence in question. Kullervo took a moment to absorb the impressive architecture of the grand estate. Surely, there were at least a dozen rooms in this place. And he didn't know whether to be impressed or insulted. At least he could tell these people were of some status, therefore the antique should be of decent quality. But he decided not to comment. For now. Kullervo's mother stepped forward first while Kullervo lingered by the stairs for a moment, eyeing the flower arrangements critically, before joining his mother's side at the front door. His hands remained tucked neatly inside his coat pockets and his gaze wandered over every detail engraved into the door as his mother smoothed her own coat before reaching for the knocker. Kullervo was wondering how long this entire affair would take, if he would be forced to accompany her for any more outings following it, when they would get to return home... Perhaps his thoughts were louder than any amount of whining or complaining could be because his mother gave him one final expectant glance and a clear nonverbal warning. Behave. Kullervo sighed quietly, rolled his eyes, and his mother knocked on the door. |

Kullervo glanced at the girl, then briefly at the drawing room, where his mother had already settled into a seemingly thorough and engaging conversation with the host about things that certainly were of no interest to a boy his age. He doubted either of them would notice his presence nor absence anytime soon, even if his mother seemed to somehow always have a pair of eyes at the back of her head. Perhaps a small mercy, he thought. His attention then returned to the girl heir, taking in her appearance with the same scrutiny in which he could afford to cast upon the rest of the house. She seemed pleasant enough, although he had little intention of forming any kind of alliance, let alone attachment, to her based off of first impressions or formal greetings. Anyone can fabricate pleasant personalities to mask their hideousness beneath with courtesy and formality. He had met plenty of people who were perfectly charming for the first five minutes, then proceeded to become insufferable. Namely, a certain Russian boy back at Durmstrang who had the very annoying tendency to follow him everywhere. "We shall see about that." Kullervo stated with a light air of dry skepticism. His mother, as previously stated, apparently had ears as well as eyes at the back of her head. "Kullervo, käyttäydy behave." Ainikki called from the other room before falling back into the flow of conversation. Kullervo sighed inaudibly and rolled his eyes. Nevertheless, Kullervo would fall in step beside the girl, taking his hands out of his pockets as he began to closer inspect the decor. He had little interest in antiques as much as he did artworks. If they had any renaissance pieces, he may just be tempted to tap into his own funds. Afterall, through the decor arrangements and furnishing, the residence looked as though whoever had designed it had a refined taste in architecture, or just an unfathomable amount of money. Probably both. Maybe these people would be useful, maybe not. "Do you even enjoy all this?" Kullervo asked as he gestured to their surroundings, eyes fixed on a particular vase that seemed to be doing nothing but collect dust. His English was fluent, spectacular, but he had a clear yet almost understated accent and that became more apparent the more he spoke. "The antiques, I mean. Or have you also been appointed to entertaining visiting strangers against your will?" There was no malice in his question. Instead, there was a faint hint of jest, as though, despite being dragged halfway across Europe with no choice in the matter, was still a... non-foul mood, unlike usual. He seemed completely composed, perhaps by courtesy of the calibre of his surroundings. Had it been anywhere less opulent, he would not have come quietly. But Kullervo glanced at her, expecting an honest answer, appropriate of a Finn. "Because if we're both being held hostage by our respective families' interests, I should like to know whether or not I owe my condolences." |
