Em gave Bella a kind, soft smile as she talked about how not every Slytherin was like his grandfather. And it was very true that Em was happy to be in Ravenclaw. He loved his dormitory, and the views from the common room. Not to mention, it just felt overwhelmingly like a better fit. He had a brief thought about his cousins, the three of them were older; and very much fit the typical Slytherin stereotype. They were bold, more brawn than brains, and excitedly took up anything that surrounded itself in the dark arts. He was thankful they didn’t attend Hogwarts.

Em shook off the thought of his cousins, which raised the fine hairs on the back of his neck. Instinctively, he reached into his robes to break off a piece of chocolate, which separated with an audible snap, given the cold air around the two students.

“Oh, my birthday was in October; on the twelfth. My mum sent me a nice stack of honeydukes chocolate, if you wanted some,” he pulled out the chocolate bar, offering a square to his new friend.

“Well, what about you Bella? When is your birthd-” but he was cut off.

Suddenly, a jet black raven dove through the tower, startling the roosting owls. Trills of hoots, and ruffles of feathers echoed in the stone tower. The raven dive bombed Emmanuel’s head, heaping him hard on the back of the head; before dropping a scarlet letter at his feet and flying away.

It took a moment before Emmanuel realized what sat on the cold floor: a howler. It was slightly vibrating, a small trail of smoke began to emanate from under the lip of the ruby red envelope. Written on the outside in golden letters:
“To: Ickle-manny-kins Love: Reggie, Emur, and Seth Bourne”

Em’s eye went wide, and his skin became pallid. His bottom lip started to subtly quiver, as he mumbled under his breath “Merlin’s beard… no…”

Bella listened curiously at Em's reply and was just about to reply when she suddenly saw a flash of black. Quickly, she stepped back just in time for a black raven to fly into the tower, hooting loudly. The raven heaped Em hard, making Bella wince just by looking at it, before she saw the scarlet letter at his feet that seemed to make his face grow pale.

Bella was confused for a second before she realized that it wasn't just a letter, it was a howler. On the outside, she glimpsed the words "Ickle-manny-kins Love: Reggie, Emur, and Seth Bourne”

Bella recalled that they were probably the annoying cousins and family members that Em had mentioned earlier, and she sucked in a breath, preparing for the yelling that was about to come.

She could see her friend's lip tremble, and she quickly stepped forward to squeeze his shoulder once in support before stepping away, letting him have his privacy.

"I'm going to be right outside, okay? I don't want to invade -- if you don't want me to hear this, I'll go,"Bella told him. "No pressure, and don't let this howler get to you too much, okay? I know it's hard to hear stuff like this but just remember that these are the awful cousins you were telling me before. From just this meeting, I can tell that you are an amazing friend to have, and whatever they say couldn't change that. They're jealous, most likely, of how awesome you are to get to go to this school! In Ravenclaw! And make your own path!"

Em’s eyes moved from the quivering, smoking envelope to the tender hand that squeezed his shoulder. Kindness radiated from his new friend, and he could feel himself soften, and find a bit of courage from her words.

He straightened up his back, and offered a smirk he hoped came off as reassuring. “I appreciate that, Bella. But, frankly, I think you’re going to hear this no matter what.”

His attention turned back to the envelope on the floor. It had started to smolder, the threat of ignition was eminent. He reached down toward the letter, briefly pausing. “Thinking about it, it might be best for you to get a bit of distance. See, my cousins aren’t known for, let’s say, holding back. I just worry that there is something more than just the yelling.”.

As he said so, he leaned down to grab the letter. It felt hot in his finger tips. With a quick, deep breath; Em tore the envelope open.

From the inside of the scarlet parchment came a screeching, annoying, but most importantly: Loud voice.

“TO OUR WEAK, UGLY, AND FRANKLY SMELLY COUSIN:
DON’T COME BACK TO THE MANOR THIS HOLIDAY, OR YOU’LL REGRET IT! WE’VE BEEN PRACTICING JYNXS YOU COULDN'T EVER IMAGINE, AND ARE EAGER TO TEST THEM OUT ON YOU!

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME, YOUR BLOOD TRAITOR PARENTS ARE NOT WELCOME. YOUR RIDICULOUS APE IS NOT WELCOME!

PS: HOPE YOU DIDNT FORGET YOUR TEDDY BEAR, WE KNOW YOU CANT SLEEP WITHOUT IT! HAHAHAHA….

The words came out explosively, antagonistically, and echoes around the stone tower for a few moments, before succumbing to the cold, morning breeze. As the letter concluded, it burst into flame; and began emanating a stinking, green cloud. Em’s nose shriveled, recoiling at the awful smell.

“Damn, I think they put a dung bomb in there,” Em grumbled, moving quickly away from the growing disgusting cloud.

Even with Em's warning and the preparation Bella had before the opening of the letter, Bella still wasn't expecting what was going to happen. She had moved away slightly, but she didn't leave the room, wanting to support her friend now that she knew he didn't mind.

"It's fine. I can handle whatever is inside the letter...I think," Bella responded, staring at the smoking envelope like it was a ticking bomb. In a way, it sort of was.

Bella winced at the voice that came out of the parchment. She wanted to put her hands over her ears, but out of respect for Em, she didn't. She bit her tongue and listened through the whole thing, trying to not make a remark or yell at the envelope. Bella knew that there was nothing she could do to defend Em from his cousins, but she wanted to rip that parchment and let it fly away in the wind. Of course, she didn't do that.

Bella was still thinking of how much she hated Em's cousins just by that letter alone, as well as what Em told Bella of his family members, when she smelled something. It was more than gross. It was putrid, disgusting to the core.

“Damn, I think they put a dung bomb in there,” Em grumbled. Bella nodded, agreeing as she grabbed Em's arm and pulled him out of the room, shutting the door, as well as the smell, behind her.

She took in a breath of clean air and gasped.

"Wow," was all she could say at first. "Wow. Okay. Poor owls. Oh, that smell..."

Em followed Bella out of the Owlery, happy to be led by her. He wasn’t sure if his legs would work properly on their own right now; he was a flurry of emotions. Embarrassment despite his friend’s understanding, frustration at his cousins taking their time to do something like this, nervous about the not thinly veiled threats made against him, and guilty. Guilty for subjecting Bella, and the owls to a moments discomfort. Logically he knew that he was a victim too; yet the guilt slowly crept its way through him.

As they stood outside of the tower, he could hear the flapping of several sets of wings quickly fleeing the permeating smell. Em couldn’t help but imagine the avian mass exodus; and the cloud of owls swarming from the tower.

He looked at Bella, he could feel shame in his cheeks, making them rosy. “I don’t know a spell that could help them, I feel terrible.” Em used every ounce of willpower to not let his eyes get watery. He took a step down the stairs; briefly slipping before catching himself. A moment passed in quiet, before he turned to Bella again.

“I am really very sorry about that. This should have just been a nice morning walk to accomplish a quick errand. That raven must’ve been flying all night, though I suppose it’s slightly better it found me here, instead of my dormitory.”

Bella realized her mistake of words as soon as they slipped out. She hadn't meant to accidentally make Em feel more guilty than he already seemed to feel.

"Hey, no, it's fine! The window is open, and I'm sure the smell will let out...soon!" Bella replied, trying to look at the optimistic side of things. "Besides, you didn't put the dumb bomb there, they did! How would you have known? It's not your fault at all!"

Bella watched, alarmed, as Em took a step down the stairs and almost slipped before he caught himself. That told her a lot about how upset Em was, although he tried to hide it.

Em then turned to her and apologized about how it wasn't supposed to be turn out like this. Bella simply shook her head and chuckled.

"Oh, imagine if it was in the dormitory? And in a way, it was a mostly nice morning walk! I got to know you better, and it is truly a beautiful day outside! Come on, Em! Let's get out of the tower?" Bella exclaimed. She took one step before turning to look at Em's face, still full of shame and trying to hide his tears, despite her words. She sighed and stopped.

"Forget about them. If they don't want to know you better, that's their problem. They will regret it when you grow up and graduate and become this awesome wizard with an awesome job and stuff. Don't take their words too hard. Like my mom used to say, just let the words in through one ear and out through the other. Who needs them when you can have your friends here at Hogwarts, right? And over the break, if you would have to stay here, it would be an amazing experience!"

Bella shot him a smile.

"Like I said before, let's get out of this place, yeah?"

Emmanuel looked out into the corridor outside the Owlery. The morning light had finally caught up with the two early risers and bathed the stone walkway in a golden light. Out through the windows, he could see the morning frost begin to lose its battle to the faint warmth of the winter sun. The silhouettes of the shadows of owls danced in the golden light, as the birds were still exiting en-mass from the dung bomb.

Emmanuel looked kindly into Bella's eyes as she said such encouraging words. He was very happy to have happened upon the Slytherin. It was true that not all Slytherins acted like his tyrannical grandfather, and Bella Light was living proof. At her suggestion of relocating, he gave her a hearty nod and took another more careful step forward. As he did so, his stomach have a hearty rumble.

"Well, I think I have an idea of where we can go," Em laughed. "I think it's time for some porridge and some marmalade toast, don't you think? " He suggested, beginning to steer them towards the Great Hall, where breakfast surely awaited.

"I won't be spending the holidays with my cousins, fortunately! My dad, he's a magizoologist, has been researching Auguries for a while now, and recently was approved for a grant to go on expedition. My mum and I will accompany him, so will Chica of course," Em smiled, mentioning his family's demiguise. "Do you and your family have any plans for holiday? Will you stay at the castle?"

Bella was eagerly following Em to the Great Hall for food and was about to answer his question when she saw a ravenclaw girl. She thought the girl seemed familiar, but her face was completely blocked by the HUGE pile of scrolls she was holding.

When the girl tripped (or crashed?) and fell to the ground, Bella concernedly leaned over to check if the girl was alright. That was when she recognized her.

"Xio! Are you okay?"
Bella picked up a scroll that was laying on the ground and handed it to Xio. Glancing at Em, she introduced her new friend. "This is Em. Well, Emmanuel, but most just call him Em. He's a second-year Ravenclaw, and we just met and became friends at the owlery. Em, this is Xio, one of my closest friends, a first-year Ravenclaw. I met her on the Hogwarts Express and we became really good friends!"

Bella listened, interested, as Xio explained what she was doing with the scrolls.

"It's so cold, though! And won't somebody miss those scrolls? They will get all wet and ruined in the snow! Wait, where did you get those, Xio?" Bella tilted her head and laughed. "Well, I know you won't tell me. It's always a mystery with you. But Xio, can we go with you to the courtyard?"

Bella turned to face Em.

"Would you be fine if we go with her to the courtyard? I mean, I know it's cold and stuff, but this is a really unique experience!"

Emmanuel walked in tandem with Bella, making their way to the Great Hall for breakfast. The smell of eggs, bacon, sausages, and warm bread wafted through the corridors; welcoming all in the castle to a new day. Em’s thoughts drifted between being present with Bella, and of spreading marmalade over wheat toast.

As they rounded towards the Great Hall, Em saw a Ravenclaw girl with black hair, and fair skin. She looked very familiar, both from the sorting, and in passing in the common room. She was laden with an abundant score of rolled parchment; which scattered around the area like marbles on tile flooring as she tripped over her own foot.

Emmanuel followed suit with Bella, who reacted quicker than he did. She apparently knew the girl, Xio, quite well.

Emmanuel collected a couple scrolls that had strewn farther than the rest as Bella greeted her friend, and Xio introduced herself, and asked for assistance.

“Good to meet you officially, Xio! I’m Em, Em Bourne. I’ve heard of your family before. It’s nice to meet you properly! Here, your scrolls,” he placed the couple he collected back atop the precarious pile. “Yeah I’d be happy to help you guys, if you don’t mind me tagging along!” Em flashed them both a charming smile, as he extended his arms to help carry the load.

“What’re we setting up for?” he asked, curiously pondering Bella’s comment about Xio’s proclivity to not explain.
