Cassian Mercer | Caretaker

Often found in worn clothes with his shirt sleeves rolled up while engaged in some task, Cassian Mercer can cleanup well and become quote polished when he wants to or when the occasion calls for it. There is something old fashioned about his appearance and he fits the "tall dark and handsome" archetype. He is tall and broad shouldered, with thick naturally tousled dark brown hair, striking gray blue eyes, dark brows, and a strong angular jaw.

There is very little about Cass Mercer that demands attention. He is not loud, boisterous, or charismatic in standing out. He's just fine not being the most interesting person in the room and would rather be on the sidelines noticing what is going on around him. He has an attentive sort of nature, one that helps him remember small things. He's curious by nature and likes to understand how things work, where they came from, and why they have become what they are.

He is reserved but not cold. He takes time to warm to people and keeps the more private parts of his life guarded yet everyone feels the genuine kindness behind his quiet exterior. He has a steady temperament and a large amount of patience, especially for objects. Cass can be stubborn and will try to mend something rather than discard it.

He does not particularly care about status, recognition, or impressing anyone. He's got a confidence about himself and likes to help where he can. He is all about trying to leave a place a little better than he found it.

Cassian Edmund Mercer grew up learning the value of being useful. Good manners were encouraged and competence and discipline were expected and left no room for making mistakes or causing trouble. He became self-sufficient early on, comfortable in his own company and accustomed to finding something useful to occupy his time that wasn't disruptive. As a child, he did not learn what it was like to feel chosen or to be wanted simply for being himself rather than for what he could accomplish. This would be something he would seek in later years.

Perhaps that is why Cass has always been drawn to things that have been overlooked. Even in his youth, he would see something broken or needing mending and wonder what happened to it, what had it once been, and how might it be saved.

Upon graduating, his first two jobs were unremarkable affairs - ordinary positions that wouldn't be considered particularly remarkable. Both felt terribly mundane but did give him more practice in noticing small inconsistencies and remembering small details.

Such instinct eventually became more than an interest and became his way of seeing the world. Under the guidance of his mentor, Arthur Bellamy, Cass learned that restoration wasn't just repairing what was damaged but was an act of understanding - as some things could be restored, some could only be preserved, and some things were simply gone.

Arthur's death left Cassian with a workshop of tools, books, unfinished projects, and more memories than he was prepared to part with. For a time he remained there, attempting to preserve everything exactly as Arthur had left it However, he began to understand that his life was not progressing in doing this. He was stuck in limbo and needed to find a way to move forward.

In time, he found his way back to Hogwarts; the first place where he had ever felt entirely at home. He would return to Hogwarts, giving himself a new project to focus his attention on and take a hiatus from the workshop back in Bristol.

Cassian Mercer feels that everything should be given another chance at life, to be understood and perhaps here at Hogwarts he could find himself while helping others feel noticed, welcomed, and like they belong.

One mid-morning when he was five years old, at his home in Northcumberland, England, Cass was with his mother in her potions kitchen. He was expected to help at the beginnig - handing her things, holding things, fetching things. So he'd hand her the blue vial. He'd hold this while she measured that. He'd go gather that over there. As her potion progressed, she dismissed him.

This potion had been a particularly long brewing potion and five year old Cassian began to stir. He pulled a sparkling blue vial toward him to examine more closely but was snapped at. "Cassian, I said over there, please." He was meant to go sit at the table and be quiet and still as possible.

He waited and waited and waited and waited. It seemed like forever. Somewhere in forever he remembered he didn't have to wait alone and that he had tucked away his small wooden rabbit toy into his pocket. It had a small winding key that protruded from one side and when wound, the mechanism made the rabbit shuffle forward in a hop. Cassian had named him Hopper.

Setting it down on the table, he turned the key and bounced a little in anticipation but nothing happened. The rabbit was as still as could be. "Mummy, look...." he said in a low sad voice, his large eyes filled with disappointment focused on the rabbit. What was wrong with Hopper? "In a moment," he heard his mother's voice, but it trailed off in that way that he knew a 'moment' was never going to happen.

"But...." he interjected but was cut off quickly and sharply with a "Cassian." He went quiet from there. He was upset and he wanted to cry but he only knew that would be more bothersome and bring more scolding.

"That's my good boy. You always listen," his mother said but he wasn't really listening. His mother wasn't going to help him with Hopper and Hopper wasn't going to work.

Starting to feel overwhelmed looking at the room around him - things he didn't understand, things he wasn't allowed to investigate or understand, a broken toy that needed his help but he couldn't understand what was wrong, his mother not willing to stop and help him: he felt so powerless.

The frustration grew more and more inside him. The anger built and without thinking he dropped Hopper and just as he had, everything that had been on the table jumped. Bottles rattled and pieces of parchment scattered across the floor and nearby a mixing spoon crashed to the ground. The chair across from him had scrapped across the floor slightly. Cassian froze. His mother looked over his shoulder at him and froze.

His mother was staring at him. "...Was that....me?" he asked. "Did I do that?" and he watched his mother, waiting for her to yell but instead saw the slightest of a smile begin at the corner of her mouth. "I did, didn't I? I made it move. I made it all move."

His mother just turned her head back around to stir her potion and Cassian leaned down to pick Hopper up off the floor. "I can do magic," he whispered to the bunny, as if telling him a special secret. And then, knowing he could do something like magic gave him the confidence he needed to feel he could fix Hopper. After some investigating, tweaking, and playing around with the toy, he was able to nudge gears back into place. He set Hopper on the table and let go and the rabbit began to hop forward.

"I fixed you!" he smiled. He wasn't some powerless little boy. He was both a wizard AND a smart boy. He could learn things and he could fix things and both of those things made him happy.

Cassian's first professional appointment puts his observant nature to practical use. Working as an investigator, he learned to follow evidence, ask questions, and notice important details. While this suited his careful nature, his interests would eventually lead him in another direction.

A growing fascination with history brought Cassian from investigation to the work of research and preservation. He examined old records, catalogued historical materials, and tended to the preservation of magical documents and artifacts. The work itself was more interesting but working at the Ministry itself was far too mundane.

Career Change - [Apprentice Restorer Proprietor]
Third position | Bellamy's Restorations | 2020 - 2026
His work with historical materials eventually led him to Arthur Bellamy and his restoration workshop. Beginning as an apprentice, Cass learned the patient and meticulous craft of restoring magical objects and furnishings. In time he became a restorer in his own right and following Bellamy's death, took ownership of the workshop and continued the work.

Back to Hogwarts - [Caretaker]
Fourth position | The Caretaker's Office | 2026 - Current
Cassian eventually returned to Hogwarts in an entirely different capacity. As caretaker, he obsersees the upkeep and prservation of the castle and its grounds, drawing upon the practical skills, historical knowledge, and eye for detail developed through his earlier work.

Cassian Edmund Mercer was born to Graham and Judith Mercer, a well established pureblood couple whose respected careers placed them firmly within the world of magical medicine. Both in their pofessions were meticulous by nature and their household was one in which knowledge, precision, and respect for skilled work was valued early on.

JUDITH ELEANOR MERCER (Mother) ~Overview~ Judith Mercer (née Marvell) is a Master Potioneer whose work has taken a rather different path. Judith works mostly at home. Surrounded by various magical ingredients, she possesses a keen understanding of them and their magical properties. Her work has always demanded patience, precision and the ability to notice the smallest change in a mixture. Cassian spent much of his childhood around her work and many of his earliest memories are from her potion kitchen.

GRAHAM ALISTAIR MERCER (Father) ~Overview~ Graham Mercer is a Senior Healer at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. His work has been demanding and exacting, requiring both a steady wand and a through understanding of magical ailments. Graham is practical and measured, with little patience for carelessness. His dedication to his patients is unquestionable and often leads him spending much time away from his family. His profession gave Cassian an early aprpeciation for the importance of observation.
