Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027

Donna stepped into the Great Hall, amongst other first years that she’s seen back at the train. She looks around, at the wide ceiling with.. floating candles? And she almost trips onto someone from the distraction.

She looks at the students sitting— probably older students— and their cloaks. Her father told her about this, the many houses of Hogwarts, something that always made her curious. He never got into detail with it, because he always refused to tell her anything about the school. It wasnt news to her that he was ashamed of his own time here. As for why, she isnt sure..

Something was happening up front, though she couldnt really peek over, being at the back. Honestly, she’s sure this is just an orientation, right? It doesnt really matter if shes at the back or not..

But then her name was called. She awkwardly pauses, when they call her out again, and she realizes she has to be up front.

Darn.

“Excuse me- sorry..- excuse-“ she says as she weaves through the other first years, feeling her cheeks burn up. She stands, looking at the staff— probably the professors?, then at the weird looking hat. She gets told to sit on the stool. The hat is placed on her head, and she avoids looking at the many students watching her.

“How curious,” the hat says, and she jumps. The others dont seem to hear it. “I sense a lot of wisdom and creativity. Id say Ravenclaw, but you have quite the assortment of what you value.”

Was that an insult? She gripped her skirt by her knees, grumbling. She didnt feel comfortable that this sentient hat knew her deeply.

“Let me see.. a lot of ambition, as well. But.. oh! I see. Now, i shouldve seen that immediately . You have a lot of traits, but your heart, as it calls.. you’re fit in HUFFLEPUFF!”

It yelled outloud, and the Hufflepuff table started applauding as she gets ushered to their table.

When I stepped into the great hall, I was shocked. The candles, ceiling, tables, and amount of people were overwhelming. The names were called out and I heard "Ravenclaw! Hufflepuff! Slytherin!" and "Gryffindor!" multiple times. What strange names, I thought to myself.

Finally, my name was called. I walked forward, but tripped on my robes and almost went down face-first! I felt my cheeks going hot as I sat down on the stool. I felt the hat get placed on my head and a second later, all I could see was the raggedy old inside of the hat.

"Interesting." it said. "lots of wisdom, but loyalty too. Not Slytherin, I can tell you that. Too much love in that heart of yours."

As it sat there humming, I wondered if it was supposed to take this long. The hat continued.

"Ah, I think I know what to do. You are a HUFFLEPUFF!!!"

I saw a table with a black and yellow tablecloth cheering me on, and I walked off the stage after placing the hat back on the stool. The rest of the sorting went by fast, and the food was delicious! I cannot wait to be a part of this school!

Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027
Every new area of the castle they'd been guided through had been met with it's own awe and adulation, though it was only here, in the Great Hall that she could truly begin to understand the sheer size of Hogwarts, both in architecture and in the amount of students that were all eyeing the new firstyears with a cornucopia of expressions. She'd heard more than a few stories of her two older siblings, both of which attented Hogwarts as well, but it was still very different to see it all with her own eyes. One student had almost tripped into her as the group briefly came to a halt, as there were many things to look up at, from the vast hall itself to the floating candles and countless amount of portraits on the walls, to the tall, armored wizard that she now knew was the Headmaster. The speech was as imposing as the man himself, yet while her attention was undoubtedly fixed on the ceremony, and all the first impressions, she was beginning to feel how tired she was from the journey.

Name after name was being called. Another one. And another one. And... and if it wasn't for the intermittent segments of applause, she may yet have begun to doze off. But then, it was as if lightning struck, a surge of adrenaline spiking through her body as she heard the booming: "Morigwynn Mulcair!" In an instant, she went from having a slumbersome, possibly slightly weird or even unintentionally eerie stare at one of the professors sitting beyond, to an attentive glance at the scene in front of her. **No one noticed she was dozing off, right? Wait, no, don't think about that right now! Think of clever things!**

The hat was steadily placed upon her head, it's wrinkles bending in a pensive manner.
"Hrmh, yes... I can sense curiosity, drive... maybe even... cunning, or ambition...", said the hat. She herself had no real preference for which House she ended up in, though perhaps a part of her subconscious wanted to succeed by her own merit, and not because 'one of her siblings helped her through it all', for she'd never hear the end of it. But the hat continued: "There's wit here, yes... and a great thirst for knowledge. I know just where to put you..."

"RAVENCLAW!"

She softly smiled at the brief whelm of applause, as she joined the Ravenclaw table with slight redness in her cheeks, and a sense of joy as she looked over the faces of the many others now sitting around her at the table. Engaging in polite little hellos and thankyous, she simply quietly hoped that the sudden surge of energy from being in the spotlight was enough for her to stay more awake, this time. Just a few more names, right?

Walking into the Great Hall was a surreal moment for Idalia della Torre. As she shuffled in with the rest of the first years, her dark eyes took in a room that had been described to her many times. Her sister would be at the Ravenclaw table, and her cousins would be at Slytherin, but trying to find them in the sea of seated students would be near impossible. Especially given she had to focus on not tripping over people's robes. The first-year crowd was full of kids getting distracted by the room, and she scowled a little when one girl stopped dead in her tracks to gape at the ceiling. That forced Idalia to awkwardly step around her. Muggleborn, maybe? Idalia was grateful she didn't look quite so dumbstruck, because all the upperclassmen were currently watching their progress across the Hall.

When they came to a stop at the front, they were introduced to the Headmaster of the school. Solomon Lear. Idalia knew that he was a Magizoologist once upon a time, but that was the extent of her knowledge. According to her sister, he wasn't a very present figure in the school halls, so the person to focus on impressing would be her Head of House. Of course that depended on where she was sorted, but given Idalia's newfound friends, all of her hopes were on Slytherin. Her gaze located the Head of Slytherin up at the staff tables, recognizing Professor Sauber based on reconnaissance from summer camp. Is he a nice man?

The Sorting Hat suddenly broke into song, interrupting Idalia's train of thought. She knew that was part of the yearly tradition of the Sorting Ceremony, but it still caught her off guard - watching the decrepit hat sing and appear so animated. Despite her magical upbringing, this was the first sentient, singing hat she had ever seen. It was surprisingly entertaining, and she had to suppress a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Soon enough, students were being called forward. Alphabetical order, as expected. She knew that this meant of her friend group, she would be first. No pressure, but also, all the pressure. They had made plenty of plans on how to decorate their rooms, coordinate weekend outfits, and claim a permanent spot in the common room. Getting sorted into Slytherin together was an essential aspect of these plans.

Before summer camp, Idalia wouldn't have minded any of the houses. Well, maybe not Hufflepuff, since her cousins constantly talked about how lame they were. Of the adults living in her home, there were several Slytherins, Ravenclaws, and even a Gryffindor. And right now at Hogwarts? Her sister was in Ravenclaw, and her cousins were in Slytherin. The reputations of the houses didn't particularly speak to her in any way. Bravery, intelligence, loyalty or ambition? What if she felt like she was none of those? Or what if someone was all of them?

"della Torre, Idalia."

The brunette felt her heart leap into her throat at the sound of her name. An unexpected bout of nerves flooded the young eleven-year-old as she walked up to the stage. She had never experienced hundreds of eyes on her like this, and Idalia quickly realized that she didn't like it. She took a seat on the stool, and the Headmaster placed the hat upon her head. The following ten seconds of silence were almost painful, but then-

"Slytherin!"

The relief that flooded through her probably showed on her face. She was quick to compose herself, but she was still beaming proudly from ear to ear as the hat was removed. Her gaze sought the vibrantly red-headed Kahira in the first year crowd, and Idalia offered a little grin when they made eye contact. Do you see? Slytherin! Idalia made her way to the table of cheering snakes, striding past her snickering cousins so she could choose a spot towards the emptier end. There was plenty of space here for the other three girls.

Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027
The Great Hall felt completely unreal, especially with that massive, bewitched ceiling. Michelle Elodie Graveline looked up at the floating candles and the swirling night sky, her mind going totally blank. Her hands were sweating, and her stomach was doing actual flips. Honestly, she didn't care which house she got into because she was just happy to be at Hogwarts. In the back of her mind, though, she kept repeating a quiet prayer. She kept thinking, please just not Hufflepuff. Anything but Hufflepuff. It just didn't feel like her at all.
When the professor finally called out "Graveline, Michelle Elodie," her heart completely dropped. She walked up to the stool with shaky legs, terrified she might trip over her own robes in front of the entire school.
Sitting down, the heavy old leather of the Sorting Hat slid over her eyes, instantly blocking out the hundreds of staring faces. The darkness inside the hat was suffocating. Then, a small, gravelly voice echoed right inside her head, making her jump.
"Oh, another Graveline," the hat murmured, deliberating thoughtfully. "Difficult. Very difficult. There is a quiet ambition here, yes, and a mind that doesn't quite fit the mold. Where to put you..."
Michelle gripped the edges of the wooden stool so hard her knuckles turned white. Her breath caught in her throat as the hat seemed to dig deeper into her thoughts, weighing her options while the silence in the hall stretched on forever. She was terrified it would sense her anti-Hufflepuff thoughts and put her there anyway just because.
"No, not quite right for the badgers," the hat muttered, making Michelle’s heart soar with sudden hope. "You need room to question, to seek out your own answers. Yes, better be..."
The hat ripped open and shouted to the entire room:

"RAVENCLAW!"

The relief was instant. Michelle took a massive, shaky breath as the heavy knot in her chest finally loosened. She pulled the hat off and hurried over to the cheering table clad in blue and bronze, sliding into a seat next to her new Ravenclaw peers. Everyone started clapping, high-fiving her, and introducing themselves all at once. Smiling back at them, the butterflies finally flew away.
