The new term was beginning inside a whirlwind for Emmanuel Bourne. The Bourne family had barely made it to platform nine and three-quarters prior to the train’s prompt departure at 11 o’clock. Having missed their alarm which was turned off by Chica, the family’s resident demiguise, Em and his Father had to travel through the floo network to get near the station.

They hustled through the busy streets leading toward King’s Cross; Em’s cart ricketing noisily as it zoomed over the concrete (by itself, mind you. Em’s father had enchanted it after a wheel got lodged in a sewer grate). They had to sprint through the platform barrier, and Em’s trunk and caged owl were tossed onto the train just as steam billowed, and the cars started moving along their tracks.

Em wiped sweat from his brow, and heaved his owl’s cage down the tight corridor looking for a free compartment. Colleagues, and long term friends reunited after the summer holidays filled the train car with a constant buzz of noise. Em saw some students showing off their new instruments for their magic, trading chocolate frog cards, and setting off various trinkets purchased in Diagon Ally. Yet, the compartments seemed awfully full, and Emmanuel’s anxiety kept him from entering a busier seat.

Clunking down the aisle, Em finally came across a compartment with a single occupant. She had tan skin, wavy black hair, and wore golden jewelry. She looked to be a bit younger than Em, likely venturing to Hogwarts for the first time.

With a kind smile and a twinge of empathy, remembering his first journey to the school, Em reached out his hand and gave a gentle knock on the glass door.

“Do you mind if I join you? Ewin here is heavier than he looks,” Em laughed, lifting up the agitated owl.

Em smiled at the girl, as she accepted his request to join her for the ride. He entered the cabin, leading with the large cage Ewin the owl was perched in. As the glass door slid closed behind him with a soft clunk, the owl quickly beat his wings; a demand for a treat. Em swiftly fished one out of the pocket of his lapel, eager to satiate the owl.

Em took in the girl before him, she liked kind and eager. She was wearing a cute outfit, with blue jeans and red joggers. It seems that she had made herself comfortable; as if she had arrived early. Em, on the other hand, felt rather disheveled. He was wearing a dark blue blazer, a black button down shirt, and the slacks his grandfather had picked out for him the night before. As a Bourne, he “couldn’t be seen as common rabble”. Gosh, he was happy to be going back to Hogwarts.

Cassi was very welcoming, and a deluge of questions fell before Emmanuel.
“I’m Emmanuel, Emmanuel Bourne. But you can call me Em. I’m in Ravenclaw, this is my second year, so I’m 12,” Em reached out his hand to shake hers. He couldn’t help for a small smirk to cross his face as the witch asked about his wizardry lineage. Somehow, something like this was always brought up; it didn’t matter if it was other students, or the older wizards that visited Bourne Manor occasionally. Em’s grandfather put a lot of stock in blood status; though his father and mother never put stock into it. “Oh, yeah well I guess I’m “full-blood”,” as the words crossed his lips, he felt a shiver cross his spine. He was not ashamed of being a wizard, nor of his lineage; but he couldn’t help but feeling a little yucky.

“What about you? Did you grow up in the wizarding world? Is there a house you’re hoping to be in?” Em leaned back, and grabbed a chocolate bar he had hidden in his pants pocket. He broke a corner off the bar, and offered it to her.
