Julien Morte。Beauxbatons。Second Year

𝕿he salty wind of the Mediterranean brushed against Julien’s face. The boy’s dark brown hair flowed backwards, him not caring at all about his appearance. A beautiful woman peeked out from behind the cabin’s white door, observing the boy with a soft smile on her face.

“Julien, it’s time for dinner.”

“Okay, mom. I’ll be there in a second.”

The boy wore an expression of pure joy. As his uncle Ben always said, life on the seas isn’t for everyone. However, it was enough for him. In fact, Julien wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Tomorrow they’ll arrive in Marseille. Julien loved the sea, but touching land once in a while to reacquaint himself with the outside world is nice too. Julien just loved “experiencing life” in general.

The setting sun painted the clouds in a lovely hue of pinkish orange. After his lingering gaze was more or less satisfied, Julien left the railing he was leaning on and joined his beloved family. A family of four: mother, father, uncle, and himself.

The happiness on their faces grew even more as they noticed Julien’s arrival. Even his father, someone he knew all his life as a neutral-faced man, looked at his son with endearment in his eyes.

The Fols had each other. That alone pushed them through numerous storms that came their way with the intention of sinking their ship.

Julien loved them. He still does. He always will.

The boy had hoped that they would remain together forever, joy everlasting. Yet a sea has its currents: constant, inevitable, forever changing.

—Prologue of A Sailor Boy's Tale, author unspecified

The gentle rocking of the ship drowned him deeper and deeper into his memories. Now a man with his own ship, Julien started revisiting his past more often. He's not even remotely old, no, he still has decades in front of him. He just experienced so much, so many bizarre and hurtful and delighting events that it all feels like a story to him. A sailor boy's tale. His tale. Julien picked up the excerpt, read it a couple more times, then put it on the top of a stack of documents and crinkly books. Someone called him, and as the captain and a working member of his own crew, he is obligated to answer. Happy to do so too.

Note: The underage wizard Julien Fol is now formally registered with the Spanish Ministry of Magic as Julien Morte Escobar, more commonly referred to as Julien Morte. The following information has been transferred to the relevant persons via the Department of International Magical Co-operation. However, this Ministry remains authorized to view and update the wizard's profile in its internal systems.

Note#2: Courtroom Archivist Bastien Fol is denied access to Julien Morte's personal files due to his familial connections with the wizard.

————————————————————————————————————————

Full Legal Name: Julien Morte Escobar
Status: Pureblood human
Sex: Male
Age: Twelve
Date of Birth: September 19th, 2013
Function: Student at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic
Nationality: French-Spanish
Residence: Toledo, Spain
Languages Spoken: French (native), Spanish (native), English (C), Italian (B)

————————————————————————————————————————

Physical Description: Julien Morte has slightly curled dark brown hair that seems to be continuing to grow darker just beneath his ears. He has light blue eyes and a relatively straight nose on his soft facial features. The wizard's complexion is of an easily tanned light beige, and he is 150 cm tall as of age twelve. He has relatively strong physical strength due to a childhood spent helping out on his family’s boat. His arms are especially strong, a trait he repeatedly expressed pride in, along with eyes he say are the color of his "spiritual home", the Mediterranean.

Typical Presentation: Acquaintances have described Julien Morte as a "free spirit", and they often cite his clothing when asked to provide a reason. His preferred outfits include basic hoodies in Muggle environments and fantastical pirate-like costumes in magical or otherwise appropriate settings. After being adopted by his paternal family, the wizard wore more elegant garments commonly associated with pureblood prestige. Specifically as a prideful Spanish house like the Mortes, he is most seen in black suits with subtle silver decorations at formal gatherings. Occasionally during more casual events, one can see him in different shades of blue, though still aristocratic in nature with a knightly look.

Mental Description: The wizard exhibits a constant smile in public. He is commonly perceived as charismatic, whimsical, and adventurous. He is generally well-liked by his peers. Julien Morte's true nature is to be determined, however, as others have expressed a conflicting sense of familiarity and alienation about him. Student A recounted that their interactions felt genuine, but she has "no deep understanding of the boy." Student B claimed to be a victim of the wizard's many pranks, disliking him for that very reason. According to the student and relevant school authorities, there was no tangible harm done to the so-called "victims", they were "merely humiliated in a playful way, but it still didn't feel right" and even felt "weirdly ruthless."

General Trivia: Julien Morte prefers savory foods over sweet ones unless the sweetness in question came from fruits. His side of the room in Beauxbatons is decorated in rustic maritime elements with a pirate academia flare. Not uncommon in the generally artistic student body, but his depiction of sailors is more grounded compared to many of his peers who only focus on the aesthetic. Werewolf students have reported smelling a refreshing scent coming from the wizard, with salt crystals and bergamot as the main distinctive characters, while rosemary and cedar wood provided a base that blended everything together. “One always has exaggerated ideas about what one doesn't know.” - Albert Camus

Julien Morte。Beauxbatons。Second Year
𝕿he boy picked up his quill and dipped it in ink. The power of stories is as infinite as one's imagination, and infinite power is what he now needs.

Nobody knew that Julien was a snake, so they put him in a cage designed for innocent, oblivious, and defenseless sheep. They harvested his wool, not seeing the scales and poison underneath.

Oh, but they will know. They will see.

The boy pressed his quill on a piece of paper, and he wrote, he drew—

A map of his story, from beginning to end.

To understand his narrative, one must first see how he arrived at the crossroad. Not an unusual story for those deemed unusual, just a sailor boy with the background that pushed him towards greatness, forced him to plot, and ultimately returned him to his long awaiting freedom.

Born to pure-blood Squib Javier Morte and pure-blood witch Béatrice Fol in Marseille, France, Julien had a uniquely adventurous childhood. Béatrice was already pregnant with Julien at her and Javier’s wedding. Shortly after recovering from childbirth, she decided for the family to live on the seas under her family name. Javier Morte changed his name to Javier Fol, and their son’s original name was Julien Fol. This was partly due to her husband’s confession that he was running from the Mortes, but also just a spur of the moment idea. The couple had no experience with ships or boats, but Béatrice’s older brother served as deckhand to a magical ship after graduating from Beauxbatons, later sailing his own boat around the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic Ocean. Benjamin agreed and became the captain of their sailboat, then Julien’s mentor when he started to walk and talk.

Ever since he had a memory, Julien’s home was the sea. The family only stocked up once in a few months in Marseille as their boat had enchanted iceboxes capable of preventing food from rotting for a long period of time. Life on the sea was perfect for Julien, you can often find him mesmerized by the deep blue hue of the Mediterranean, staring down into the depths or straight at the horizon for hours. Apart from an abundance of free time, Julien was also educated on the basic structure of the wizarding world by Béatrice; elementary magical concepts and theories by Javier; and everything one needs to know about life as a sailor by Benjamin. They roamed the Mediterranean for years, pointing out magical creatures and plants to the young Julien whenever they saw one, solidifying his awe for the open waters.

Javier doubted if his son would be a wizard. Before the storm, he held on to the possibility that Julien would be a squib, just like him. That even though the boy's heritage is pure-blood, he would not need to enter its world and be caged by whatever chessboard awaiting him. Once they discovered that he was indeed a wizard, Javier felt both proud and uneasy. They had been avoiding the game for so long and he hoped it would continue that way, but there is no denying the probability, however slim, that the family would be found even after so many years. Additionally, because of their avoidance, Julien had no pieces to deploy if the need of a political chess game ever came their way. After a few days of intense debate, Javier finally decided to give Julien his own copy of the Morte family notes.

Four years later during a stop back at Marseille, the family was greeted by an unfamiliar face that claimed to be their boat mechanic’s apprentice. The man said that their usual mechanic could not come to this check-up because he grew very ill over the week, gaining the family’s trust and entering their boat. Afterwards, the man introduced himself as an agent of the Morte family. Benjamin immediately took out his wand but was held down by Javier. If the Mortes sent anyone other than Rafael, it meant that this would not be the last visit, violence would only aggravate the problem.

The agent then started explaining that the Mortes would have known if he sold the notes. He did not, but still the family was furious and would see him thoroughly punished. This meeting was supposed to take place a few months ago, the last time they stopped at Marseille, but the agent saw Julien. The boy was hanging his legs over the boat, looking down into his own reflection. At some point, the water beneath his feet that he did not touch moved. A small whirlpool formed, and Julien himself was startled, jumping back down on the deck. The agent left the scene and reported back to the Morte family, telling them that Javier’s son was a wizard. The patriarch Mateo Morte, Julien’s grandfather, modified his ruling of the traitor Javier and his new family. He said that they would be forgiven, on one condition: Julien Fol shall exist no longer, and Julien Morte shall be born. Julien Morte will serve the family faithfully in the form of attending a wizarding academy and excelling in both studies and social life to remedy his father’s damage to the Morte family’s reputation by merely existing. Durmstrang would have been their first choice, but Julien had no time to become a resident of the included countries before the Institute’s foundation year starts. Therefore, Mateo decided that his grandson should attend Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Despite the drawback of not being able to focus his studies in the Dark Arts, the family would now also have a member closer to their home country and form relationships that might easier affect the family’s standing in Spain.

Béatrice and Benjamin were ready to argue, but Javier stopped them once again. He agreed to all of the terms, but then the agent clarified a point: Julien Morte, as the name now suggests, will be living with the Morte family in their mansion in Toledo, Spain. The Fols, now including Javier, will only be able to visit occasionally and secretly. Julien was silent during this whole exchange. He sensed the seawater around their boat retract a little, and felt the salty wind blow stronger around him. He was on the verge of releasing magical power due to his strong emotions, but he tried with all his might to press down the urge. He heard from his father about the Morte family, he also read the notes himself. He knows that they have mysterious ways of cursing anyone who crosses them, even if they were their biological family members. His father was constantly fired upon with magic back in his youth, then immediately healed so that guests would not see any evidence of abuse. Julien knew what the Morte family was capable of, so he knew that the only way to protect those he cared about was to obey.

Later the same day, Julien arrived at the Morte family home. He had a trunk with all his belongings with him, the only things he had to remind himself of his bygone happiness. However, his story will not conclude with a puppet’s monologue—he will play the chess game he missed for years and win it. The stakes? Survival. The prize of victory? Reclaiming what he lost to the villains of his story, and write his own ending without the coercion of the all-powerful author known as Mateo Morte.

Anecdote of a Storm—the first instance

On a night when Julien was six, the family encountered a moderate storm. The Fols stayed inside the cabin while Benjamin was navigating through the rain at the helm. The ever-so-curious Julien, however, decided to go outside and see for himself what a storm is like. The present Julien would think back to that moment, amused by his own idiocy, saying that the arrival of his First Instance of Magic was the only reason he lives to tell the story. That day, Julien lied that he was going to the bathroom. By the time his parents realized, he had already snuck out on deck. Benjamin needed to keep his hands controlling the ship, and Javier could not allow his wife to be in danger, so he went out to fetch his little troublemaker himself. Javier walked onto the deck, grabbing anything he could to stay on board, his whole body soaked in both rain and seawater. Then he saw Julien, standing near the bow, unbothered by the storm at all. That was because he was dry—the waves that would otherwise swallow him whole were stopped before they touched his body. It was like he had an invisible shell around him. Javier called out to his son and Julien turned around, with the most innocent smile on his face. They returned to the cabin and Julien was under the mercy of his family’s wrath. After warning him repeatedly of the dangers of his actions, they sat him down and explained that his encounter was magical in nature—that he was indeed a wizard.

Anecdote of a Snake—the parselmouth awakening

The Morte family of Spain is a traditional pure-blood family specializing in combining the Dark Arts with Herbology. They were originally two families—Morte and Alcaraz—respectively the pioneers of Dark Arts and Herbology research during later years of the Crown of Aragon. A union between them birthed a strong Parselmouth wizard: Sebastián Morte Alcaraz. He was quite active in the muggle world, participating in wars and later serving as military advisor to the king. Sebastián was granted the title of Baron for his diligent work, and his descendants inherited the privileges associated with it. The two families maintained a close relationship over the centuries, combining their knowledge to create spell combinations that produce peculiarly vile outcomes. However, since their research was never found to be used for the purpose of inflicting harm, it was permitted by Spain’s magical authorities. On a side note, there have been suspicions that the family was not fully open with the Spanish Ministry of Magic after it became the main governing body of the country's magical society. People whisper that the family's most heavily guarded formulas are extremely dangerous and might even qualify as restricted spells or potions. Some say that their secrecy is the only reason they have not been purged by the authorities yet.

The current patriarch of the House Morte is Mateo, a ruthless and calculating figure with a near-impossible aspiration. Over the centuries, other Parselmouth wizards have been born, but their numbers waned from the intermingling of—still pure—but non-Parselmouth bloodlines. The man's father hoped that he would be able to speak Parseltongue, and when that never happened, he was disappointed for the rest of his life. Mateo, though eventually learning to listen to the language on some basic level, will never carry on Sebastián's legacy. However, he has a new goal. He will personally see that a Parseltongue adept heir be sent to the patriarch's seat, and he will not give up his position until that vision is achieved or his life is gone with the wind.

After the storm, the Fols docked at a Greek port to replenish supplies and do a quick check to see if anything was damaged. Ever since his First Instance of Magic, Julien felt a strange power within; As if something had entered his brain without permission, that somehow, some sort of knowledge was squeezed into his skull. Though it was certainly alien, it also felt natural. When they arrived at this port, Julien was sitting on the side of their boat, boredly kicking his feet. Suddenly, a snake appeared in the corner of his eye. It slithered in front of him and talked to him in a language he never learned, yet understood perfectly. Hissing sounds and unearthly syllables flowed out of his throat when he thought of the words to reply with, and thus the boy discovered that he was a Parselmouth. Based on his homeschooled understanding of the wizarding world, those who speak Parseltongue are closely associated with Dark Magic and the “evil” side of history. In fear of losing his peaceful life, Julien told no one.
