━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━sta 06|eva 07| str 03| wis 09| arc 07| acc 08━━━━━━ Prodigal Astronomy Learner | Wandmaker ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Some would call it stupidity what she had done. But frankly she hadn't really stopped to think her actions through before she acted. Then again, she wasn't exactly known for patience. There was a reason she resonated with a phoenix feather core wand over her old snallygaster one. She sat down in the corner still crying over her broken hand. The pain was blinding.
@Aislin Darragh Aislin had come up to her to check on the hand. She held out her hand slightly, just enough for her friend to examine but not far enough that someone may hit it on accident and further injure her. Fawkes had begun to hiccup by this point. Truly she was a pitiful sight to see right now. Her mind barely processed the question about if she wanted to head to the hospital wing. Fawkes shook her head. N-No.... D-dont wanna go.... She mumbled closing her eyes as the pain began to build again.
She felt bandages wrap around her hand a few minutes later. Fawkes opened her eyes and looked up to see her roommate @Tina Carillahad casted the spell. It was a bit messy, clearly not refined, but it did prevent further bleeding which she was glad about. She really didn't want to deal with getting out blood stains from her robe. Granted Scourgify existed but still. She'd rather just crash in bed directly then have to deal with it.
Fawkes watched her roommate attempt to answer the riddle just as she had prior. She flinched at the tone of voice Tina had used as she answered the riddle. The young Ravenclaw had never heard Tina use such a tone of voice before. She had to wonder, what exactly had the girl gone through that she resorted to talking about friendship like that. To refer to it as if it was an inconvenience, an act, a way for someone to take advantage of you to get what they want and then dump you like nothing ever happened.
The girl had to admit nothing like that had ever happened to her before so she didn't quite understand how Tina felt. But to have such a negative view on, in Fawkes' opinion, one of the most beautiful forms of love.... It was concerning. Fawkes had to think for a moment. Was that how Tina thought about her as well? Did Tina also think that she would dump her like whoever it was that soured her view on friendship? Fawkes hoped not. She had always done her best to try and be kind and not offend anyone. Not on purpose anyways.
Tina's voice directed towards her snapped her out of her thoughts. Y-yeah the bandages are helping.... She responded. She hoped Tina couldn't tell that she was lying through her teeth. The bandage work was sloppy and even if it was perfect, a mere bandage wasn't going to stop the pain of a broken bone. Well atleast it stopped the stinging she had felt from the air running over her open wound. It hadn't stopped all the pain but it was definitely more bearable now.
Aislin's voice cut through next. Fawkes was a bit surprised by the blunt tone but at the same time she couldn't help but agree. If Tina didn't consider her to be a friend... well maybe Aislin's statement held some truth to it then. If Tina did consider her to be a friend thought, then Fawkes felt a bit hurt honestly. Considering one person changed the girl's view on friendship, then to Fawkes, that meant she wasn't exactly doing a good job of being a friend. Either outcome resulted in the same answer. But she wasn't going to mention any of this to Tina. Not one bit.
@Jeremy Slater The next person to show up to their little group outside the common room was a first year. Fawkes recognised the boy, he was the one who had been holding a fact booth during the summer camp. It seems he had gotten his wish and was sorted into Ravenclaw. It was always nice to see people get the house they wanted. It was even nicer to see someone else attempt the riddle and try to get them all inside.
She noted the look of worry he gave her thanks to the broken hand. She simply just smiled back with this tired, wry smile. Quite frankly, she didn't want to alarm the younger students with her antics. Well Mari had already been subjected to them but that was hardly the point. Fawkes watched Jeremy work through trying to solve the riddle. In her sleep addled state, she had completely forgotten the whole point of the riddle was exactly that. It was a riddle. It was supposed to have an answer you needed to wrack your brain for. It wasn't simply a term that had to be defined. So they had to use their brains and think. What exactly was friendship?
The door can't be broken. Bit confusing? Yes. Broken? Nah. Fawkes piped up from her place on the floor. The pain was becoming tolerable now, as long as she didn't move her hand that was. If she did move it she was met with a fresh wave of pain, so she was trying to avoid moving it. She did look around for her wand though. Maybe she could use it as a... what did her cousin say it was? A splint? It was used to hold broken bones in place if she remembered right.
Fawkes paused as she heard clapping from another first year behind her. @Xio Arcana Was she... was she really clapping at the fact Fawkes had broken her hand? That was rather rude honestly. She understood the first years weren't exactly acquainted with most of them but to clap at a broken hand? Didn't people these days have basic empathy? Or if not empathy then atleast manners? Both seemed to be a rarity. Well not everyone had grown up with needing to learn society etiquette like her but basic manners was something people should have learnt from their parents.
Damn.. clapping at someone's injury... that's... something... she mumbled. Was the girl making a tally now? The girl was standing rather precariously now. You're gonna fall... Fawkes said quietly. If she had more energy and didn't have a broken hand, she would have stood up and dragged the girl back from the banister. But she had no energy to deal with it at this moment. Her head was throbbing from a mix of the pain and her sleep deprivation. She winced when the girl began to speak at a decibel level that was far too loud for both the hour and Fawkes' throbbing head. Geez.... were we also this loud as first years-? she asked no one in particular.
She perked up when she saw an older student @Aurora Ranviercome by. Finally! Now surely they would be able to enter their common room. An older student was sure to have more experience with this stuff right? Fawkes couldn't wait to get into her nice warm bed and snuggle with her darling cat. But as she watched the older girl go through the riddle, the hope in her eyes began to fade. Their senior couldn't solve the riddle. In fact, she seemed to be leaving them to deal with it themselves. Vaguely she processed Aislin asking for healing spells. Ah right. Her hand still needed medical attention. And she refused to go to the hospital wing. It wasn't as bad as it looked right? Her hand just needed to be bandaged properly for it bit and it would be perfectly fine! right? RIGHT!?
Fawkes could feel herself dozing off at this point. She was beyond exhausted by now. She noticed another person join the group of stranded birds @Andrea Woodsburn. She somewhat recognised the girl as a fellow second year but by this point she couldn't be too sure. What she was sure about however was that the girl either attempted the riddle and had gotten it wrong or had just not attempted it at all. Perhaps she was trying to think it over? A significantly smarter decision than what the rest of them had done.
Ah now here was someone she did recognise. @Nick Jameson Nick Jameson. Fawkes had duelled him once before. It was not the most pleasant experience truth be told. Poor Paul had gotten badly injured from the duel and Nick's taunting really hadn't made life any better. Fawkes decided to just ignore him. If he was able to solve the riddle then good for all of them but if not she was going to have to deal with him joining the rest of the crowd.
What she didn't expect was what he did instead. If she could be considered stupid for trying to punch the door, what Nick did was even stupider. She watched, eyes wide, as he slammed his head into the door. ARE YOU NUTS!? she yelled horrified. It was a miracle his head wasn't bleeding, or worse, split wide open right now. He probably had a concussion now though, no way ramming one's head into a door was going to leave you unscathed.
You probably have a concussion and your first concern is someone taking your guitar-? Fawkes asked confused as she saw the boy soon passed out. Looking closely, he was still breathing thankfully. That meant he was alive. She looked at Aislin I think if anyone needs to go to the hospital wing right now, it's him. she pointed to Nick with her good hand. Unlike her, he couldn't exactly protest about going to the hospital wing so it wasn't going to be much of a problem to take him.
The girl with the tally marks seemed to be rather indifferent to Nick's stunt as a whole. Was this truly how people acted these days? It was one thing to clap when Fawkes had broken her hand but to move past a guy with a concussion? Genuinely what is wrong with you? she asked the girl she had aptly named 'the tally girl'. He's just passed out and most likely has a concussion from slamming his head into the door and you're just treating this like it's some movie!?
This was the first time Fawkes had felt such anger. Yes she had been angry numerous times prior to this, but the anger she felt now was different. The feeling was more intense than anything she had felt before. She did not like Nick, not one bit. But what she hated more was people dismissing severe problems as if they were nothing, as if it was just a casual inconvenience in their daily life. Fawkes could only hope the girl would one day learn the importance of empathy. Until then she was just going to have to deal with the girl's lack of it.
She frowned as Tina corrected the tally girl regarding how many people the eagle door had defeated. I may have been injured but im still conscious! Fawkes remarked glaring at her roommate now. It surprised her how spiteful she could actually sound. Was this really her? Why was she acting like this? She never considered herself to be spiteful, especially towards people she considered friends. It was most likely just frustration right now from everything going on.
I mean I would hope you lifted his body in instead of dragging it- Alternatively, drag him to the hospital wing. He clearly needs medical attention. Fawkes stated ignoring the fact she also needed medical attention. Tina then ran off to the library. Few minutes later, she had returned with a stack of books. Did her roommate truly believe they were going to be able to find the answer in a book? The door would hardly be adequate enough to guard the common room if the answer for the riddles could simply be looked up in a book. But if it brought people even the slightest bit of hope..... she wouldn't mention that fact then.
Aislin was right about the fact to solve the riddle we had to use our brains. They couldn't brute force it.... or could they? Logically they couldn't. Logically, Fawkes was aware of that fact. But she wasn't thinking logically right now. If she was she wouldn't be injured right now. So what was the next best thing? Attempt to brute force it even if it wouldn't work. Fawkes looked around. She still didn't have her wand with her.
Another senior student had shown up now. Fawkes recognised him as being one of the Broom racing captains. @Zach Zaphiere He seemed to also be as stumped as the rest of them. Were they going to end up being outside this stupid door for the rest of the night? She hoped that wasn't the case. She watched the older boy crouch down in front of her and offer to check her hands. She allowed him to do so, since he was a healer intern after all. It seemed he was also of the opinion that Nick had to be taken to the hospital wing.
One by one more ravenclaws joined the group. @Mikaela Foundling @Aster Gillespie Two more first years had made their way over to the group. Neither had any luck with the riddle. Though the girl gave Fawkes an idea. What if the answer is just friendship in another language? Like Friendship is just that. Friendship! Amitié Friendship in French. No? uh... Amicitia Friendship in Latin. Also no..... Yeah this was a stupid idea. she grumbled.
@Aaron Schwartz Another first year boy came up to the door and unsurprisingly, failed the riddle. Though his suggestion caught Fawkes off guard. Potions on the door? Well maybe it would work! She waited to see what potions the boy would suggest. But his suggestions just confused her. Cure to common poisons? The cure to uncommon poisons? Veritaserum!? How in the world would that work? The door is not a poison. And veritaserum? Firstly, the door is not lying, it's giving us a riddle. Secondly, it's not a person, it cant drink the potion either!
Just then the door creaked open. Fawkes looked up excitedly. Finally! They were going to get into the common room! She watched their head of house @Jessamine Lancaster exit the tower. Fawkes felt like she could cry from happiness. She couldn't wait to get to bed and snuggle with Seren. She couldn't wait to drift off in her warm bed. She couldn't wait-
Thunk. The loud noise snapped her out of her thoughts. Her face paled. The door had closed and they were all still outside the tower. Fawkes could feel tears well up in her eyes once again. The pain from her hand had returned, the reality of them being stuck outside all night was starting to seem more and more likely now. She just wanted to go to bed. Was that so much to ask for?
Fawkes flinched slightly out of habit when she heard her last name. Regardless how many times someone called her by Chaos, it never sat right with her. She had always disliked the formality of going by last names instead of first. But this was a formal situation right now. Her head of house was calling out to her. It was natural she used the girl's last name. She let the woman take her hand. She heard her mumble to breathe. Breathe? But she was breathing. Why-
She yelled out in pain as her bones began to mend themselves from the spell. It was blinding pain, a miracle she hadn't passed out from it. But as it began to fade, she found she could move her hand again. Granted, there was still lingering pain, but it was useable and that was the important part. She simply nodded when Jess told her to inform Zach about any further pain and to not punch anything. Yes Professor. Fawkes said sheepishly. Well she was most definitely not going to attempt to punch the door again that was for sure.
Nick was finally being taken to the hospital wing. Hopefully he would be alright. Jess said she would be back in five minutes..... Little did she know. A lot could happen in five minutes.
@Mikaela Hendricks Finally someone she recognised had joined them! Mika, one of her other roommates. And it seemed like she had her cat with her as well. Regardless of what Mika said about her cat, Neko was a joy to have in the dorm. Seren seemed to enjoy the company of having another cat around after all. She watched her roommate try and fail the riddle. Mika seemed to just want to nap and wait till someone else solved it. Honestly, she couldn't blame her. She would do the same if it wasn't for the fact she was in pain earlier. And now she was no longer sleepy enough to sleep outside the dorm.
One of the younger girls seemed to be panicking @Saturnalia Sutton-Smith. Fawkes could feel her frustration and sadness. She reached out towards her. Hey. Its alright, im sure someone will be able to solve the riddle soon! If not then I'm sure Professor Lancaster will get the door open when she returns! She said trying to be cheerful to make the younger girl feel better. Truthfully she had no idea if even their head of house would be able to solve the riddle but she was going to be optimistic, or atleast appear to be, for the sake of the younger students.
@Brookline Quinn Once again, another older year had come by, attempted the riddle and failed. What did Fawkes expect by now? She was loosing hope of them ever being able to enter the tower now. Just then, brown entered her vision. It was her wand. She smiled at the girl and whispered a quick Thank you! before taking her wand back. Her hand still hurt yes. But it felt nice to have her wand in her hand once again.
The next person to arrive was Riley @Riley Bluescar aka the last of her roommates. Hey the whole squad is here now! Fawkes said grinning as she looked at Tina, Mika and then Riley. She was clearly much happier now that her hand was fixed and she had her wand back with her. What's happening, my dear roommate, is that none of us are able to solve the riddle to enter the common room Fawkes sighed. It was probably getting rather late now.
The next people to come @Kai Hepner @Mirada Johnson @Chatt Auclair also had no luck with the door. Tho the 3rd year's idea about flying into the common room made sense. They had no clue if the windows were open and the one person they could've asked had gone to drop Nick to the hospital wing.
The boy from the fact booth mentioned that kicking the door would have been more effective than punching it. Now that she had a clearer mind, Fawkes had to agree. It wouldn't have done as much damage as punching the door had done. But she was too tired to stand and attempt to kick the door now. Instead, she had a better idea.
Fawkes lifted her wand and twisted the alder wood around a bit before calling out loud and clear REDUCTO. The spell flew threw the air and hit the door, just about missing Aislin who was standing in front of the door. Much to her dismay though, the spell seemingly just got absorbed by the door rather than blast the door to pieces like she had hoped. She knew people were staring at her now thanks to that attempt. What... It was worth the try- she mumbled. Atleast I didn't punch the door again! Please read the OOC Note

Zach's Speech = #005075
Zach's internal speech = #005075 10th September 2026 | Evening
In front of Ravenclaw's door
One by one tried their way to solve the riddles from the damned bird knocker, but nothing really happened. Nothing. He also heard the boy who wondered if the door was broken earlier tell the injured Ravenclaws to kick the door instead of using their head or hands. But again, nothing happened when he demonstrated the kick. Zach couldn't help but let out a chuckle, mocking the boy's attempt. @Jeremy Slater
His ears were tickled by a statement from another Ravenclaw boy, who thought that the door was poisoned in a way and wanted to use Veritaserum to get the answer from it. "Are you for real?" Zach judged the boy harshly for his nonsense. But then he remembered that the boy might be just a first-year. Good thing one of his teammates, Brooke, responded to the boy well. Zach took a deep breath before adding what Brook said to the boy, "Sorry, I mean, the potions you mentioned should be administered through ingestion. I believe the door doesn't have anything that we can call a digestive system to process the potion." he responded and emphasised the basic mechanisms of the potions. To reduce his guilt from judging the boy, he added, "Nice idea, though." @Aaron Schwartz @Brookline Quinn
The door opened. A glimpse of hope was shining around the person who came out of the door. It was Professor Lancaster! Zach's eyes twinkled. He wanted to jump and dance so badly for a few seconds before... @Jessamine Lancaster
Thunk.
His eyes still widened, but now it was utter disbelief at what he was seeing in front of him. The door closed! C-L-O-S-E-D! Zach wanted to scream so bad. The boy really wanted to, but he couldn't! He was too tired. The image of him in his comfy pyjamas on his bed vanished. The most he could do was scream internally and curse the door for whatever it did to pour salt on their wound.

As the broken-fisted girl allowed Zach to check on her hand, the boy started assessing her. "It might hurt a little bit," he said. He looked around to see if he could use something that could be used as a splint. He was also thinking whether he should use Brackium Emendo or Skelegro for her. While thinking, he remembered the book from the other girl before. He grabbed the book, planning to splint the hand with this book. book mention: @Tina Carilla, injury mention: @Fawkes Chaos
Before he could splint the hand, the Head of Ravenclaw crouched around the girl with him and Prefect Aislin and cast the Bone Mending Spell. "Well, less thing to think about now," he thought and giggled in his mind. "Thank you, Professor," he said to Professor Lancaster. @Jessamine Lancaster
But the next thing surprised him. The Head of Blue House told the girl to talk to Zach if things got worse, before leaving them to bring the unconscious boy to the Hospital Wing. "Eh?" His plan to move away was prevented. Though he could just leave them, for the sake of his reputation in healing magic, he should stay. Scratching the back of his head, Zach responded, "Uh... Yes... Let me know if you feel pain. And don't do anything..." he stopped, thinking of the perfect word not to offend the girl, then said, "Unwise." interacting with @Fawkes Chaos
Another broom-racing teammate appeared with an idea that she would fly to the windows. "Are you sure? Though Prefect might close their eyes to it, I don't think any painting that sees you would shut their mouth about it. You know, using your broom outside the training area is prohibited," Zach said to her. @Mirada Johnson
Then he saw the girl who injured her hand raise her wand to the door. He wondered what spell she would use against the door. He was sure that her attempt would fail. This door is enchanted with a strong. There's no way kids like all of them who gathered in front of it would be able to use any spells against it. He was ready to mock her for her failure until he heard the spell she cast. His eyes widened, and he tried to turn his back to run in case something bad happened. He thanked Fate for whatever they did to make nothing happen. "Didn't I tell you not to do something..." he stopped again before continuing, "Unwise?!" He looked at the girl, judging her as harshly as he could. The boy palmed his face, then said, "Don't do anything dangerous again..." interacting with @Fawkes Chaos
Then he looked at the rest of the Ravenclaw; his former Prefect side appeared. "This goes for all of you too. Don't do anything that could put yourselves or any of us in danger." He looked at all of the eagle students there, while at the same time, scanning if anyone hurt themselves again.
His eyes noticed the door-kicker boy approaching a girl who curled up on the floor. The Fifth Year followed him to approach her. He crouched beside the girl and saw that she was bawling her eyes out. He sighed. "You might faint if you keep crying. Don't worry, everything will be good. I believe we will be able to solve the riddle and get inside soon," he said, forcing his smile. He opened his enchanted satchel to look for his bottle and offered it to her. "You want water?" mentioning @Jeremy Slater and interacting with @Saturnalia Sutton-Smith

Friendship is...

Saturnalia, Zach, and Fawkes feature in multiple places
Aislin really, really didn't know what to do here. @Fawkes Chaos didn't want to go to the Hospital Wing. @Nick Jameson definitely needed to go to the Hospital Wing, but she wasn't sure how to get him there safely down all those stairs. @Saturnalia Sutton-Smith was crying (badly, in a way she had no idea what to do with). The sheer absurdity of the situation caught up to her all at once; she uttered her prefect-ism about mental and physical barriers, @Zach Zaphiere laughed a tiny, accidental laugh, and she snorted. What was she even doing? Keen observers would notice watery eyes amidst her brief spout of laughter, but she got both back under control. As she stepped to the side to let a pale-haired first year (@Mikaela Foundling) take his (straightforward and overly reasonable) attempt at the riddle, she swiped at her eyes. Someone had to be responsible, and it looked like it was going to be her and Zach.
What is friendship? A ten letter word. "Something you don't have," she muttered, thinking aloud, which probably counted as an accidental use of her guess. She thought the next first year (@Aster Gillespie) approached the riddle with the necessary creativity -- Aislin never would have thought to say art -- but the knocker still wasn't satisfied. Unfamiliar with the show Jeopardy, Aislin interpreted the girl's question as just that, and answered, "I think amity just translates to friendship." Trying translations could work, but when Fawkes did, the door stood silent.
She was nodding along to the idea about potions, courtesy of one member of the original trio of stuck eagles (@Aaron Schwartz) -- any non-injuring ideas were worth trying, right? -- when the door swung open behind her. Aislin processed jump out of the way and not stop it from closing, but she forgot to be disappointed quickly because of who had emerged. Aislin's entire demeanor brightened and she even stood up a little straighter. She didn't know what to do. It was @Jessamine Lancaster's entire job to know what to do (among other things probably). She was gone far too quickly, but at least she took care of the worst, violence-induced problems and issued a warning with far more weight than anything Aislin could have said. A serious nod communicated that she had listened, that she would try to keep order.
The pile-up piled up more and more after that. With renewed calmer energy, she addressed the question of a new arrival (@Riley Bluescar), words more or less overlapping with Fawkes'. "The riddle is 'what is friendship' and we're stuck." The contemplated addition of don't be stupid or, more descriptively, don't try to punch it were left off in hopes her spot in front of the door remained enough of a deterrent for another set of two brain cells fighting for third place. Their resident over-eager eagle (@Xio Arcana) provided her own announcer-like summary. At least she'd hopped off the banister without breaking her neck.
Aislin repeated a shorter, "We're stuck," for a girl in glasses (@Kai Hepner). Pretty self-explanatory, minus Fawkes' bandaged hand. A familiar-looking, slightly older girl (@Miranda Johnson) offered to fly around to the windows, and Aislin nodded along before she thought about it. Maybe... not. Could she authorize that as a prefect? What if she ran into glass like a clueless buzzing bee and fell to her death? "You could go splat," she offered as a discouraging argument. You could tell Aislin didn't usually talk this much this late.
Only one person here seemed to really share her line of thinking, and that was @Jeremy Slater (not that she knew his name). He was attempting wordplay. He knew what billywigs were (irrelevant to the riddle but a boost to Aislin's opinion). But he had also kicked the door (risk of broken toe) and now he was asking Saturnalia to stop crying. "Mate." It was, to be clear, a very disappointed-sounding mate. "Leave her be."
As stupid as her initial move had been, Aislin was glad Fawkes was here. They were kind of like bad situation buddies. They'd officially both seen parts of each other's bones! When she was still sitting on the floor next to her, they'd mostly been in agreement once Fawkes was lucid enough to comment (the door wasn't broken, their resident over-eager eagle had some issues and was at risk of being injury case number three, Nick's situation was really, really bad). The anger in Fawkes' tone rose as Aislin rose to unsteady feet. She was almost a third semi-responsible presence (maybe fourth, @Brookline Quinn seemed older and calmer), and even had a better idea on what to say to Saturnalia than Aislin did. Emphasis on almost, though.
There were a lot of people, so she didn't notice right away when Fawkes lifted her wand again. But it was hard to miss the incanted REDUCTO. Harder to miss the sound the spell made. By some incredible luck that seemed to possess her in moments where not moving would spell certain death, Aislin dropped to the floor, fast enough to bruise her knees. The spell slammed into the knocker, which did not explode, or dissolve, or whatever the loud, violent-sounding spell she'd only heard of in passing did.
"Fawkes!" she cried, on a delay. Holy stick bugs didn't do this one justice. She was shaking, a little, she noticed it first in her fingers. That... could have been her head. "You could've told me to move."
Aislin stood back up (after another second of floor time and wishing she could curl up like a woodlouse) and brushed off her knees. "Can you be putting it away? Please?" It being her wand. She had half a mind to hold out a hand and ask for Fawkes to pass it over. "Maybe it would be better you don't try anything else. We'll figure it out." This she said more quietly. It was really only meant for Fawkes' ears, though of course the entrance was too crowded to avoid overhearers.
At least Zach handled the group-wide scolding. Aislin was still shaking. He even offered water to Saturnalia, and that seemed like a good thing to do for someone super-crying, right? She did point out, in response to Tina's comment, "You won't be getting detention." Her prefect badged glinted on the front of her shirt; she had actually remembered it this time for her short-lived patrol. Well, they might get detention for hurting themselves, like Professor Lancaster had said, but not for breaking curfew. Clearly they were trying to get in.
