There are around 241 species of woodpeckers scattered around the globe, 11 of which are native to Europe, and only 1 of which can be commonly found in the Scottish highlands.
Kennedy sat on the edge of the courtyard fountain, sketching away in her journal. Her subject was a great spotted woodpecker, perched on the tree in front of her. The bird was a beauty of black, white and red. It was not the best of models, as it kept shifting positions while it drilled the tree trunk with its beak. Kennedy made note of its movements, then continued on with her sketching, stopping here and there to make more notes, erase something she didn't like, or brush loose strands of hair from in front of her face. She hummed subconsciously and tapped her foot on the stones below while she worked. Her tapping synced up with the rhythmic thrum of the woodpecker's beak hitting bark.

It was not the most spectacular day outside, grey overhand blocked the sun and sent a slight chill through the air. Even though it was a little bleak out, people still gathered in the courtyard to enjoy the evening, not that Kennedy would have noticed. She was too deep into her work to spare a glance around.
It was her first full sketch attempt since the term had started and she had to work fast to ensure she finished before the bird decided to take off. This time last year she'd done at least three sketches, but over the summer she'd seemed to turn into even more of a perfectionist. She didn't want to half do anything, so she dedicated even more time to ensuring her art was as close to flawless as it could be. If someone were to look carefully through Kennedy’s journal they’d see a timeline of progress. She’d been given the journal for her 8th birthday, and as the years went on the research became more organized and the illustrations more detailed.
When Kennedy finished sketching in pencil, she decided to take it a step further. She reached down into her bag and fished out a small leather pouch that contained her oil pastels. She selected a vibrant red and continued forward with her art by adding shades of color.

It was an uninteresting Wednesday when Silas made his way to the courtyard, unsure what he was looking for. It didn’t tend to be the most exciting place, but it was at least better than being cooped up inside for the whole day. He needed to move, needed the fresh air to clear his head, and maybe, just maybe, he would stumble across something that could entertain him, at least for a fleeting moment. The dreary weather, while common for the UK, didn’t do much to help his restlessness, either…

He kicked at a stray pebble and surveyed his surroundings. There were enough people around that he had options for who to pick on — now, who to choose? His eyes were drawn to the centre of the courtyard, where a girl sat at the edge of the fountain, appearing to be sketching in some kind of journal. She looked entirely too peaceful, and, well, that simply couldn’t be allowed.

Silas strolled around the edges of the courtyard, half keeping an eye on her, half checking to see if anyone else looked as satisfying to disturb. She was so engrossed in what she was doing that he was pretty sure he could walk right up to her without her even noticing. It made her a good target, and likely easily bothered, especially if her drawing was of any importance to her.

Moving closer, he waited for the next time she would switch colours, thus taking her hands away from the book. As soon as it happened, he swept in with a quick motion and snatched the journal away from her, taking a few steps back so that she couldn’t easily retrieve it. Smirking, he looked down at it. “Well, isn’ this nice,” he began tauntingly, before his face hardened and his gaze lifted to make eye contact. “Would be a shame if summat were to ‘appen to it…”

When you live so long with something you often don’t think about how you would live without it. In most cases of the privileged person, you don’t constantly worry if suddenly oxygen will stop existing or drinking water will no longer be available. Of course it's a far off concern, but not one that eats for your immediate attention because in one second it could all be gone. The same could apply for Kennedy’s note book.
It was everything to her, it stood for her most prominent hobby, and one day she hoped to publish a book based on the works inside of it. Only bird watchers could truly understand the importance of a life list, and the journal was that and more. Kennedy didn’t have a diary, she instead put all her feelings and emotions onto the pages of her research. If she was feeling particularly sad then she would illustrate with watercolors and spend a lot of focus on finer detailers. When she felt angry she used sharp colors and like to draw birds with defined features. When she was calm she did her best works, ones with steady hands and light strokes.
But it all became irrelevant when the notebook was snatched from right under her nose. Kennedy’s veins turned to ice and all color drained from her face. Her eyes only saw her empty lap, so she glanced up to find her journal in the hands of a slytherin boy around her age.
“Well, isn’ this nice,” He said with a smile.
Kennedy felt her heart begin to race, she knew the book couldn’t be trusted in his hands.
“Would be a shame if summat were to ‘appen to it…” The words made Kennedy dizzy. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. She wouldn’t let anything happen to it. Kennedy stood up quickly, silent for a moment, opening and closing her mouth as if it had forgotten how to form words. The boy was intimidating, he looked as if it would make him happy just to make others unhappy, and that scared Kennedy almost as much as the threat he had made to her journal. But after a second she finally spoke
“Give that back,” She begged, “Please?”
