Cantis: Singing Jinx
Confidence was slowly building, a fact which Thora was quite glad of, as she sat through the lesson. She'd managed to greet and exchange names with a third year before the professor had called everyone to attention. Though intimidated, she'd proven to be quite kind, which was something Thora appreciated. Experience taught her that not everyone was like that, but it wasn't like she could do anything about it, right?
The lesson began in a rather peaceful manner, with neither outbursts nor spontaneity. She tapped her wand lightly on the palm of her nondominant (left) hand, hoping that the main object of the lesson--the spell, naturally--would arise soon. The brunette actually quite liked learning, and stored up whatever knowledge she came across straightaway, but she'd always enjoyed the practical part of lessons (if any) more than the length of time where the professor taught. But her eagerness would quickly be stifled, as while there was a rather delightful jinx they should walk away from the classroom knowing how to cast, it was not at all something Thora wished to be the victim of. Cantis. The Singing Jinx.
Thora Larkston did not sing. She'd joined the Frog Choir months ago, that was true, but it had been more for the people and even the frogs than singing itself. While she could see that many had no qualms about singing in public and considered it no different than talking, based on the variety of tunes she'd heard many a time around the castle, she definitely did not feel the same way. First of all, she didn't even have a good voice, and being forced to use it would simply be torture. It was scary, and it was embarrassing.
But no, the professor finished off his end of the lesson by instructing all of the students to pair up and rehearse the jinx. Thora had half a mind to stay in her seat, or hide under her desk, but she knew she couldn't. She had to be brave. Where was all of that courage, though a pathetically small amount, when she needed it? Her only comfort was that everyone would have to be doing it at the same time. Even if her partner was magically adept and succeeded, and she had no choice but be forced to break out in song, hopefully it wouldn't be too noticeable.
Stifling a sigh, she stood up reluctantly, hands turning clammy with fear. First of all, who was she to pair with? The third years seemed to know each other quite well, as could be expected, and had no problem finding a partner, getting to work in no time. Many of the other students seemed quite excited to be the victim, and before long, strains of music filled the air, the voices blending to create a strangely beautiful harmony--except, of course, for the random screeched notes which were spontaneously emitted when voices were stretched nearly past their limits.
Surprisingly, she was found by the same blonde she'd been greeted by earlier, and Thora met her with a grateful smile. "Nervous?" the other girl asked with her own smile, "Don't be." Taken aback, Thora could only nod, though she was glad the third year had been so kind. Though she attempted to keep a smile on her face, her eyes would probably betray her fear, as they had widened in panic. But she supposed this was the only way she'd know if she could actually cast the jinx properly, so she picked her wand up, off the desk, and blinked quickly for a few seconds, waiting for the light to hit her.
"Cantis," her partner incanted, and as a beam of pink light immediately appeared and hit her, Thora fought the urge to panic more than she already was as her mouth opened--but not of her own accord. Words began to spill out, and to the poor Slytherin, it felt as if her voice carried over all of the others, prominent enough to be heard by everyone in the room. She couldn't do anything to control it, though, and finally submitted to the spell, trying to act somewhat graciously for the sake of her partner. As she managed to cast the same jinx on her partner with a loud "Cantis!", while moving her wand in the rough shape of a beamed music note, she began to relax a bit. Every student in the room, as far as she could tell, at least, was singing at that point, and it really was rather amusing, once she'd come to look at it in that manner.
The Slytherin actually found her mouth curling into a smile--however possible that was given her current predicament, that was--as lyrics continued their way out of her mouth. Thora certainly couldn't say that she enjoyed the experience, but at least she had a spell to show for all the embarrassment.
