When: September, after Flying Year 1, Lesson 1

Eveline walked with the gaggle of first years toward their very first Flying Class. For once, she was uncharacteristically quiet. She didn't make any manipulative or demeaning comments about muggles managing flying just fine because of the existence of aeroplanes, despite the fact that she'd planned to do so from the safety of her dormitory this morning.

Instead, as they approached the Professor, Eveline's eyes remained on the sky above. Perhaps not today, on their first class, but eventually the first years would be up there. On their brooms. Their rickety, unsteady school brooms. One slip away from a terrible fall to their deaths, and Eveline hated that. She hated that so very much.

She could face a mountain Troll with all the sass in the world, but heights were - though she'd never admit it - her weakness. Her Achilles' Heel.

Eveline listened to the Professor's lecture before they were allowed to touch the brooms, thanking whatever God existed for every second the Professor bought them without putting them on the stupid vehicles.

Finally the moment came. Dread filled the pit of Eveline's belly. She looked down at the broom on the ground. If she could only fail to even summon it, perhaps she could go even longer. She could hesitate. But then Mother would certainly not be pleased...

"...up," Eveline said sharply. The broom wobbled tauntingly, but didn't come to her extended hand. Thank God.

"Up!" Eveline repeated, feeling confident in that, despite her genuine effort, the broom seemed intent on not obeying her commands. If she failed at summoning it, perhaps she wouldn't have to fly all term.

That was a hopeless prayer, as it turned out. On the third 'UP!', perhaps the broom heard the hidden trace of relief in Eveline's voice, because it quickly shot up into her hand. She frowned. She hadn't been the first to summon her broom successfully, but she hadn't been the last, either. The rest of the class summoned their brooms - some with more help than others - and, finally, they all mounted them.

...Eveline's legs were shaking. She was thankful for the generous fit of her school robes, because they helped tremendously to hide the fact.

As she swung her weak leg over the broomstick, clutching it with knuckles she was sure were going to splinter the wood unintentionally, Eveline thought of what this class would be like going forward. Professor Weems had explained they'd study magical sports and strategies. Surely that didn't mean he would introduce bludgers and the sort while they flew.

Just one year. One year of this... Eveline thought desperately.

She now had to push off the ground. Just a little bit, sure, but one foot or one hundred feet made little difference to Eveline. If her feet weren't touching the ground, she wanted nothing to do with this. She procrastinated.

"SWEEP," she said under her breath, buying time and hoping class ended before she had to hover. "Survey the environment."

She made a point of looking around at every detail she thought would buy more time. Every blade of grass with a bug on it, every window on Hogwarts Castle, even the clouds in the sky.

"Watch for others," she continued, eyeing all of her classmates with a frown. Some of them were actually excited for this! The lunatics! She pointedly avoided looking at the students directly beside her. If they didn't see her face, maybe she could hide her humiliation and terror.

"Examine broom, exhibit mindfulness," she said more quickly now, legs threatening to give out beneath her.

The broom seemed fine. The bristles were uneven, since it was a school broom, but it had no pressing issues that she noticed. As for mindfulness? She didn't feel mindful. She was too busy imagining herself plummeting to her death.

Then the last step - prepare to fly. She didn't say this one under her breath. She didn't say it at all. She simply pulled her wand from her robes, clutching it tightly to her chest, then held it against the broom as she gripped it.

Eveline's eyes closed as she floated mere inches off the ground. She couldn't look. She couldn't bear looking.
OOC: I wanted to use my submission to the first homework assignment for Flying as a thread! I thought it could be fun to have some in-class interactions! Feel free to join in as one of the students on either side of Eveline, or even across the class! For information about 'SWEEP', if you haven't done the homework, see the textbook!

It was weird to say, but even though Bella was absolutely terrified of heights, she was really excited to learn how to fly. Her parents had told her bedtime tales of their quidditch matches when she was younger, and she held fallen in love with the broom sport even without ever seeing one in real life.

Now, though, Bella was having second thoughts. She was wracked with nerves right before class started. She was SO excited, yet...what if she fell off and got terribly hurt? What if it was actually the most boring thing ever? Actually, scratch that. There's no way it can be boring. At least, that's what Bella told herself.

Bella saw a couple of first years already there in her Flying Class. At first, she was wondering if she was late but realized that she was actually early and everyone was just...earlier.

She placed down her broom on the first free spot she could see, next to a girl with yellowish-blondish hair. Bella tried to listen with intense concentration on the rules, but all she could think of was the fact that she would actually be flying today, the moment she had been waiting for ever since she got her invitation, and even before that.

The professor instructed everybody to say "up" and attempt make the brooms shoot into their hands.

"UP, please, broom!" Bella said. She remembered that her parents had told her to be polite to her broom, or else it wouldn't obey you. The broom seemed to know that because, at first try, it shot into her hands like an arrow.

She turned around to the girl next to her, who was still shouting "Up!" Bella wondered if she should offer to help, or if it would be awkward, but thankfully, the other girl figured it out really quickly.

Bella swung her leg onto the broomstick, clutching the broom like it was all she depended on, before she remembered to relax and calm down. She turned to look around, making sure that it was all clear. She checked her broom, making sure it's fine, and muttered, "hmm...maybe I should name you something other than 'broom.' Seems awfully classic, don't you think?" Finally, Bella took a looonnngggg, deep breath. She closed her eyes, even though she knew that was a terrible idea, and just whispered, "please fly."

The broom suddenly gave a lurch, and she flew into the air!

"AHH ---- oh. Oops." The broom had flown up to a pretty tall height, but it wasn't really as high as Bella thought it was. Her feet couldn't touch the ground, but it wasn't that scary. Bella chuckled nervously as she looked around, hoping that nobody witnessed her embarrassing moment.

That was when she saw the girl who was originally besides her close her eyes as she flew inches off the ground. Bella was concerned on how tight the girl seemed to be squeezing the broom.

"Hey," Bella yelled to the girl, trying to make her broom go back down so she wouldn't have to yell. "Wo-ah!" The broom shot back down, almost hit the ground, and then flew back up. "I'm okay, I'm okay."

After some trial and error, Bella was able to fly closer to the girl. She hesitated for a moment before asking, "Hi! I'm Bella Light. Umm...how are you? Are you okay? You are just holding the broom awfully tight, that's all!"

When: September, after Flying Year 1, Lesson 1

Eveline opened a single eye, looking toward the voice of Bella. Unfortunately, this had the side effect of reminding her that she was currently off the ground, if only by inches. Her ankle flexed as the tip of her toes almost grazed the grass, but not quite, and Eveline abruptly closed her eyes again.

"It's a technique," Eveline said. Her voice was slightly strained, and she didn't sound nearly as composed as she was trying for. "Gripping the broom this way. I've seen Quidditch players do it."

She'd never seen a Quidditch game in her life, actually. Even when her parents had offered to take her to see the World Cup when she was six, Eveline had refused to go. But she wasn't about to admit that her hands were physically incapable of loosening on this broomstick.

Still, manners were manners.

"Eveline Ashcombe. You may know the family - we export potion ingredients and certain-" The broom lurched suddenly - mockingly, if you asked Eveline, the stupid piece of wood and twig - to the side, and Eveline gripped it impossibly tighter. Her eyes shot open as she fought every instinct to lean down against the broom for stability. She leaned forward just a tiny bit. Her heart was hammering in her chest as her feet finally touched the ground again. She remained mounted, only because it was part of class and she wouldn't get a detention, but she remained on the ground.

"This broom is clearly defective," Eveline said defensively. Her cheeks were slightly pink. "Unstable, even. How are students supposed to learn on these old things?"

She looked over at Bella as if expecting agreement. It was easier to look at the girl now that her own feet were on the ground.

"Light," Eveline said as her heart began to steady itself to a reasonable pace. She took a careful breath. "I don't know that name. You must be muggle-born, then?"

Bella watched, concerned, as the other girl, who's name was Eveline, opened her eyes, then closed her eyes again as she glanced at the ground. She explained to Bella that gripping the broom that way was a strategy, which Bella couldn't help but comment on.

"That's new! I never heard of that technique before, but my parents always told me to grip the broom lightly and treat the broom politely! They said that if I do that, the broom will react better to the rider's movements," she gasped. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Was that rude? I'm sure your technique works well, too! And who am I to doubt the quidditch players?"

Bella flew closer to the ground, but still stayed in the air, as Eveline landed on the ground. She seemed very relieved to have her feet on the ground again. Eveline started to talk quite defensively at how the broom was defective and unstable, and Bella was taken aback.

"Umm...do you want to switch brooms with me? I think mine is fine, if a little on the used side! And...it really is okay if you are scared of heights. I'm too," she whispered the last part really quietly and quickly, in case she made a mistake. She had taken mental notes on the way Eveline was acting, and she was starting to wonder if her fellow classmate also had a fear of heights, just like her. Bella was starting to wonder if she was wrong, though, and muttered, "Never mind. Pretend I didn't say anything. Sorry!"

Upon Eveline's remark of her last name, Bella gave a soft smile. "Wait...Ashcombe...I think I heard your last name before when my parents took me to shop for potions. My mother is pureblood, and my father is muggleborn. So I'm halfblood, but I took my father's muggle last name. Personally, I don't really think being pureblood or muggleborn should separate people, but what about you?

When: September, after Flying Year 1, Lesson 1

Eveline's eyes hardened at Bella's insinuation that she, daughter and heiress of Cassian and Seraphine Ashcombe, could possibly be afraid of anything. Even flying on a stupid wooden death-stick. But her smile was pleasant, even if it didn't quite reach her eyes. She ignored the comment and stuck to familiar territory.

Her eyes caught on a particularly interesting pair in class - Ravenclaw, if their uniforms were any indication. The girl seemed entirely too comfortable considering she was sitting on a broom that looked as if it was going to grow a mind and buck her off in an instant. The boy, though Eveline didn't know for sure, distracted as she was by her own death-causing bundle of bristles on a wooden stick, seemed to be just as hesitant to fly as she was. At least he had proper sense.

"Yes, you probably have seen my family name. Most have. And, no, I don't believe we should be separated. I think those with privileged blood have a duty to teach and encourage those with fewer advanta-" Eveline stopped speaking abruptly as the pair called after Bella. Loudly. Well, the girl was loud, at any rate.

You know these two?" Eveline asked, and it took significantly more work than usual to keep her face calm. She didn't dislike Xio, but the Ravenclaw girl reminded Eveline of Kerfuffle. Not in looks, of course. She wasn't ugly. But she was noisy and seemed to have a rather large personality, at first glance.

Oh, what had he gotten himself into? If only he hadn't let his distrust in the rickety brooms show on his face, he wouldn't have been dragged against his will to the flying field, especially when he'd very much prefer to be finishing homework. Thanks a lot, Xio.

It had been what, hardly a week since he'd been here? He still flinched at the shifting staircases and statues, so there was no reason he'd be flying on something meant to sweep the floors. Of course, the kids who'd lived their entire lives in the whimsical world of witches and wizards would never understand. One of those kids was a not-so-fellow Ravenclaw girl who went by "Xio". He'd imagined it was short for "Xiomara", but the girl was loud and boisterous, and she would have said "Xiomara" if her full name wasn't just "Xio".

There was nothing wrong with her name, but there were plenty of things wrong with her. He'd go in detail about that later, though.

Right now, Atlas stood on a stretch of grass, eyes following Xio as she mounted the broom with a familiarity that must translate into years of prior experience. He felt... bitter... not that he was jealous- that would be pointless. He had lived a mundane life up until Hogwarts after all.

Still, trusting his life with a wooden stick and some bristles was less than desirable, but completely mandatory in Xio's presence. He was not getting out of this even if he sprinted for the tree line right this moment. His new "friend" could probably fly faster anyway. Plus, there were other students around, and he'd be socially executed by breakfast if he were such a coward.

Atlas' eyes fixated on two girls, both Slytherin judging by the robes. The two were mounted on their brooms, but the one who went by "Bella" was hovering slightly above the ground while the other's feet were planted firmly. Xio had waved to Bella while leaning dangerously backwards, almost prompting Atlas to warn her. Almost because not only would she not listen, but a fall might bring her confidence down to a healthier level. He was simply doing what was best for the girl in the long run.

Bella waved and yelled, "Hiii XIO!!!!" She turned to Eveline and smiled.

"Yeah, the girl who called my name is my first and closest friend at Hogwarts, Xio Arcana. I'm not sure who the boy is, but probably her friend," Bella explained.

"I'm not taking extra lessons. I just stayed late to talk to my friend/acquaintance/classmate Eveline. Eveline, this is Xio and --" Bella turned to the boy and waved, "What's your name? I'm Bella Light, first year Slytherin, nice to meet you! And this is Eveline Ashcombe."

Bella watched as Xio taught -- and showed -- the boy about the broom before turning back to Eveline.

"Well, would you like to go on the broom and fly for a bit? Like obviously not very high, just a bit above the -- ahh!" Bella yelled, jumping up. She forgot that she was on a broom and half-jumped, half-toppled over. "I'm okay. Sorry. Eveline? There's a rattlesnake. Near your feet. And I know I'm a Slytherin, but my parents taught me how poisonous they are, so just a reflex. Anyways, back to my question. Would you like to just enjoy the wind? Or we can just talk!"

Bella looked at Eveline, then turned to look at Xio and the boy.
