Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical CreaturesSomeone had made a mistake.
The Summer Camp planning committee had originally planned a small magical-creature-discovery-area for Department members of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. The enclosures had been prepared, food had been provided and everything appeared to be perfectly under control.
Until someone accidentally left the Niffler enclosure open.
By the time anyone noticed, the creatures were gone.
Several small creatures with long snouts and a coat of black, fluffy fur had scattered throughout the campgrounds. This wouldn’t have been that big of a deal, if Niffler’s didn’t have one particular trait that they were known for. Which was that they had a particular liking for shiny objects, such as coins, jewelry or particularly fancy pens.
While harmless, these creatures were still meant to be handled with care
The students task was to locate their hiding spots, find the cabins they’ve been causing havoc in and perhaps even catch the creature if the opportunity presented itself.
Of course, Nifflers were not exactly known for making themselves easy to catch.
Particularly when there were shiny objects lying around the camp.
The Committee had provided appropriate equipment and instructions, but the rest would be left to the Department.
And perhaps someone should check their pockets before the Nifflers do.IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
A few days ago, everyone in the Department for the Regulation of Magical Creatures learnt about Nifflers. The small, blue creatures with pig-like noses loved shiny items. It was fun – apart from the fact that they would strip any jewellery from you if they were to see it.
Today, my cabin was packing their bags and getting ready to leave, as it was the final day of the Summer Camp. I sat on the top of my bed, staring out the window… I could sense that we would have at least one more adventure together.
And I was right. Just as I had thought this, a crackling voice echoed through the room. “Can all students in the Department for the Regulation of Magical Creatures abandon their packing and go to the campfire?” Happy to get out of cleaning, we all piled out of the cabin and headed for the campfire.
That was when I noticed it. One of the cages was empty, and that was the very enclosure that was supposed to hold the Niffler! Apparently, I was not the only person who had realised this. Shocked gasps rang through the air. But, weirdly enough, none of the staff were taken aback by the Niffler’s escape. Instead, they were smiling.
Then I realised it! This was our final task, to find the Niffler! One would think that they would be easy to find, but the more shiny objects around, the harder the Niffler would be to locate and capture. “Your task: Find the Niffler and bring it back here,” one staff member called out loudly in order to be heard over the animal sounds coming from the occupied cages and enclosures surrounding the only empty one. “If you can find it, you will win a prize.”
Excited, I set off towards the Magical Sports cabin. I remembered seeing a shiny trophy glinting near the door.” An odd place to keep it, if you ask me,” I muttered under my breath. The trophy was still there! I took it, making a mental note to return it in case there was some unfortunate person looking for it.
“Where could the Niffler be?” I groaned. It was nearly nightfall and they would be even harder to spot then. I could only hope that I would be able to find it before then. Shiny objects… Shiny things… The fire! It wasn’t exactly shiny, but the sun made it glow that made it sparkle. I sprinted towards the blazing fire, but if there was a Niffler there, my heavy footsteps would have scared it off.
Then I remembered that somebody in my cabin had brought a jewellry box! There was bound to be a Niffler there. Night had fallen. When got to my cabin, I tiptoed around to the window making no sound. Peering through it, the dark frame of a Niffler was snuffling around on my bed. Preparing myself, I burst through the door and snatched the snouted creature up. I had captured it! I brought it back to the campsite and presented it to the staff, who locked the protesting animal back up into its cage.

Text #B97A84; italics Mentions N/AElara had been on her way back to the cabin when she heard that the Nifflers had escaped. She stopped to listen. The enclosure had been left open by accident. By the time anyone noticed, the creatures had already scattered around the campgrounds. Elara looked towards the area where the enclosure had been set up. She had seen a Niffler before. They were small, fluffy creatures with long snouts and a habit of collecting anything shiny. That alone made them rather troublesome. Especially around a camp full of students. Elara checked her pockets before doing anything else. Nothing seemed to be missing. She listened to the instructions and took the equipment provided by the Committee.
Then she started looking around the campgrounds. The area was quiet enough. She followed one of the paths between the cabins. There were people around, but nothing seemed out of place. Elara checked beneath a few bushes and around the sides of the cabins. Nothing. She kept going. A few minutes later, she noticed something on the ground. A coin. Elara crouched down and picked it up. She looked around, wondering if someone had dropped it. Then she noticed another one. And another. They led towards one of the cabins. Elara followed the trail slowly. She found a few more coins along the way, along with a hair clip and what looked like a pen cap. There were too many of them for it to be a coincidence. She reached the cabin and stopped outside.
There was a strange noise coming from inside. A faint clink. Then another. Elara pushed the door open. She stared. The room was a mess. A drawer had been pulled open. A few pieces of clothing had been moved around. Several shiny objects were scattered across the floor. Something small moved behind a chair. Elara froze. A black, fluffy head appeared. The Niffler looked at her. Elara looked back. For a second, neither of them moved. Then the Niffler grabbed something from the floor. It ran. Elara stepped aside just in time. The creature disappeared beneath a table. She crouched down and looked underneath. Where did it go? Elara waited. A small paw reached out and pulled a coin closer. She almost smiled. “You're not very good at hiding.” The Niffler immediately disappeared again.
Elara stayed where she was. She did not want to scare it into running around the cabin again. She noticed a small pile of shiny objects beside the table. A few coins. A button. A piece of jewellery. So that's what it had been doing. Elara carefully reached for one of the less valuable looking objects and placed it a little farther away from the table. The Niffler's nose appeared. It sniffed the air. Then it came out. Elara didn't move. The creature took a few cautious steps towards the object. She reached for it. The Niffler grabbed the shiny object first. It darted past her. Elara quickly stood and followed.
The Niffler ran out of the cabin and down the path, its little paws moving much faster than she expected. “That was fast,” she murmured to herself, hurrying after it. The creature turned sharply around a cabin. She followed the same way, only to find an empty path. Elara stopped. She looked around. Then she heard a soft clink behind her. She turned. The Niffler was sitting near the cabin steps. It was holding another coin. Elara stared at it. The Niffler stared back. Then it ran again. Elara sighed and followed. Finding the Niffler had been easier than catching it. She was beginning to think catching one might take a little more patience.

Latoya had been listening carefully to the instructions though she couldn't help the small smile that appeared on her face when she heard what their task involved. A group of Nifflers had escaped their enclosure and scattered throughout the campgrounds. It certainly wasn't ideal that they were loose especially with so many shiny objects belonging to students nearby but Latoya couldn't deny that she was curious to see one for herself. Before setting off she glanced down at her own belongings and checked her pockets. Nothing was missing. "Good," she murmured with a quiet laugh.
She collected the equipment provided by the Committee before she began making her way through the campgrounds. She kept her eyes open as she walked and looked beneath bushes around bushes and beside the cabins. Nifflers were small creatures and with their fluffy black fur they probably had plenty of spaces to hide. Latoya didn't want to rush around looking for one. If she frightened a Niffler it could easily run somewhere else and make an even bigger mess. Instead she tried to think of about where one might actually be drawn. Shiny objects.
She looked around again. It didn't take long before something caught her attention. A small coin was lying in the grass. Latoya crouched down and picked it up before looking around to see if anyone nearby seemed to be searching for it. A few feet away she spotted another coin. Then another. She followed the little trail and found a button, a hair clip, and a shiny pen along the way. The farther she went the more convinced she became that she was following the word of a Niffler. The trail eventually led toward one of the cabins.
Latoya slowed as she approached. A few things around the entrance appeared to have been moved and there were several shiny objects scattered nearby. She carefully stepped inside. The cabin was in even more disarray. A drawer had been pulled open. A few belongings had been shifted around. And several coins and other small objects had been gathered in a small pile. Latoya smiled. "Well, someone has certainly been busy."
A soft rustling came from behind a chair. She turned toward the sound. Two little eyes appeared first followed by a small black fluffy head and a long snout. The Niffler had found her. Latoya stayed still because she didn't want to frighten it. The creature stared at her for a moment before looking toward the pile of shiny objects beside it. "Hello," Latoya said softly. The Niffler seemed to consider her greeting. Then it grabbed a coin and hurried beneath a chair.
Latoya crouched down a short distance away and watched rather than trying to reach for it. She knew that if she chased it it would probably only make things more difficult. Instead she took one of the provided objects and placed it where the Niffler could see it. The creature's nose appeared from underneath the chair and it sniffed which caused Latoya to patiently wait. Slowly the Niffler emerged. It crept toward the shiny object and picked it up before it immediately turned around. Latoya smiled. "You're clever."
The Niffler seemed to disagree with Latoya's decision to admire it. Instead it suddenly darted toward the door way. Latoya then quickly moved aside to allow it to pass instead of trying to grab it. The little creature raced outside and disappeared around the corner of the cabin. Latoya hurried after it and was careful not to get too close. The Niffler was surprisingly quick. She followed it around the side of the cabin only to find that it had vanished. Latoya then stopped and listened. For a moment there was nothing until she heard a little faint click which caused her to turn. The Niffler was sitting near the cabin steps and held the coin between its paws. Latoya couldn't help but smile again. "You really do like shiny things, don't you?" The Niffler continued to examine it's treausre.
Latoya slowly approached and kept her movements gentle and unhurried. She didn't want to frighten it. Once she was close enough she placed another shiny object on the ground and waited. The Niffler's attention shifted. It waddled toward the new shiny object and Latoya carefully positioned the provided equipment. She gave the creature plenty of space and guided it toward the safe enclosure rather than attempting to grab it. After a few moments the Niffler was safely contained. Latoya let out a quiet breath of relief. "There we go." Latoya looked down at the little creature which was already inspecting its enclosure for anything else that might be worth collecting.
Latoya secured everything according to the Committee's instructions before beginning the walk back toward the designated area. Along the way she noticed another coin lying beside the path. She stopped and picked it up. If there were several Nifflers loose there was a good chance this wasn't the only trail around camp. Latoya glanced back toward the cabins. She hoped the others would be found soon. As mischievous as Nifflers could be they were still creatures that deserved to be handled with patience and care. After all they hadn't escaped because they wanted to cause trouble. They had escaped because they had simply followed their instincts. And perhaps that was something worth remembering.

Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures

Since Octavian signed up for Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures when he heard that the Nifflers escaped he figured he should probably help deal with it. He was given basic instruction and equipment before he went to look for the Nifflers.
How hard was it to find a bunch of tiny creatures he had thought before heading out.
For some ungodly reason every stupidly hard.
Taylor had been walking for what felt like ages, when he saw something small move near the bushes. He paused.
"Was that a Niffler?" he asked himself.
The black creature poked its little head out of the bushes before disappearing again.
"Okay...."
He crouched next to the bushes to get a better look at the creature. He barely got a good look at it before the Niffler suddenly ran away.
"Oh come on," Taylor mumbled, slightly annoyed, but he had always liked a good chase.
He picked himself off the ground and started to follow the creature. It wasnt exactly the easiest thing to follow. The Niffler was small, fast and seemed to have absolutely no interest in being caught.
Taylor followed it past a few trees and around one of the paths.
Why is something that small so fast?
Soon the creature stopped next to a bench.
Taylor stopped too.
There was something shiny and small on the ground next to the bench.
Oh, a coin.
The Niffler immediately went for it.
Oh yeah, who would forget that Nifflers were obsessed with shiny things?
Taylor watched as it grabbed the coin and held it tightly.
He thought for a moment.
Then he remembered the sandwich he had eaten earlier.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of tinfoil that he had gotten from his sandwich. He looked at it for a second.
He had no idea if this would actually work.
But like Albert Einstein said, if you never try you will never make it in life.
Probably.
He tossed the foil close but not too close to the Niffler, hoping and slightly praying it would work.
The Niffler immediately went for it.
Taylor blinked.
"...That actually worked."
He slowly walked closer to the creature while it was distracted by the shiny foil.
One step.
Then another.
The Niffler didnt seem to notice him.
Taylor took another step.
Please dont run.
He was close enough now.
He carefully reached down and scooped the creature up into his arms.
The Niffler squirmed in his arms, clearly unhappy with being caught.
"Yeah, yeah, I know, I know," Taylor said, trying to keep a good hold on it. "But its my job to get you back home. Sorry not sorry."
The Niffler continued squirming.
It twisted around and nearly managed to get free.
Taylor quickly held it closer.
"Hey, stop."
The Niffler squeaked loudly and tried again.
Taylor sighed.
"You are a whole lot of trouble for something so tiny."
He looked down at the creature.
The Niffler stared back at him.
"...Are you seriously still trying?"
Another squeak.
Taylor shook his head.
"Right."
He started walking back towards the designated area, keeping the Niffler securely in his arms.
It continued to squirm every few seconds, but eventually seemed to realise that escaping wasnt going to work.
Taylor looked down at it again.
"I dont know what you were planning to steal, but I'm guessing you already found something shiny."
The Niffler made another small noise.
Taylor wasnt sure if that was an answer.
Probably not.
As he walked, he glanced around the campgrounds.
There were probably still more Nifflers hiding somewhere.
He really hoped someone else was dealing with those.
One was enough for him.
He finally reached the designated area and carefully handed the Niffler back over, making sure it didnt get another chance to run away.
Taylor stepped back and looked at it for a moment.
"Well, at least I caught one."
He sighed and looked around the campgrounds again.
Now where are the other ones?
He really hoped the next one would not be this annoying.
Probably wishful thinking.

Zephyr always thought sheep were talented at getting themselves to places they were not supposed to be. Now, he realized he owed them an apology. At least when it’s sheep, they generally had the decency to remain visible while causing trouble. The warning about the escaped Nifflers was a but too late for him before he could check his pockets. A couple of simple things he collected during the day were gone, even the remaining coins he brought with him. Nothing important to a creature obsessed with shiny objects but then his hand stopped moving when he couldn’t find his pocket watch. Oh crap. Of all the days to have it with him.
The watch was a gift from his father, and unlike a few coins or something else easily replaced, he’s not willing to lose it in. Now he was in full panic mode. “Where’s my pocket watch?!” Hopefully Nifflers know how to respect personal property but everything he knew and read about them suggested otherwise. If he were a small creature obsessed with treasure and had an entire summer camp to rob, cabins full of students’ belongings seemed like an obvious place to start. There were probably coins, jewellery, watches, buckles and Merlin knew what else lying around there. He was still several steps away when he spotted something unusual. A small black shape conveniently holding a lot of stuff, including his pocket watch.
The Niffler looked comfortable and they both just stared at each other, neither were moving. “Aha! There you are.” But he had not completed his sentence yet when the Niffler disappeared, it was so fast! His eyes narrowed at the empty spot. “Or not.” Someone else was already on its trail because a voice came from somewhere, followed by movement inside the tent. The place looked messy. Belongings were scattered on the floor and several other things were dragged away. A crash was heard and his head snapped in that direction. Their little visitor was not finished messing with the place. He stepped carefully around the scattered belongings, whatever the niffler was doing, it’s ruining everything in its path.
When something moved, he expected a creature but he found a person moving to the bedroom doorway. “Sky!” She was holding her wand and looking as if she’s investigating something. “Let me guess, Niffler issue?” There was no hiding the amusement beginning to show on his face. He stopped a short distance behind her to see what she was looking at. Another rustle came from the bedroom, so it was cutrently in there. He exchanged look at Skylar, “Please tell me you’ve got a better plan than telling it to stop. It snatched my pocket watch.” There was a hint of annoyance in his voice. “We need something shiny to tempt the Niffler out. Chasing it is just going to make it run.” That much he knew from animals at home. Different creature, same basic problem. If something didn’t want to be caught, running after it would turn the whole thing into a game and it would always end in disaster.

The summer camp had just started a day ago. This was what Ophelia thought the moment she found out about the disappeared Nifflers. She was glad that she'd bonded quite well with the people in her group. The Department of Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures made her even more interested in the magical beasts, although she still thought that the name of the department was unnecessarily long. If someone were to say they worked in that department, the other person would have already left. Would it hurt the Ministry of Magic to just give their departments normal and short names, ones that are easy to remember? What about just "Department of Control of Magical Creatures"? Just get rid of two or three words, and it'd still make sense; no need to use synonyms. The raven rolled her eyes and crouched down on the grass to look under a table more closely.
Someone had left the Nifflers out by forgetting to close their enclosure. Accidentally or not, now it was the students in the Regulation of Magical Creatures Department who had the job to find the Nifflers and put them back in their enclosure. Ironically, they now had to control and regulate a magical creature.
Ophelia could see other students who had the same job as her from a distance. The raven had started to be a social butterfly in the middle of her first year at Hogwarts, but she still wanted some time alone for herself sometimes. It was called a "me time", and she had made it her mission to find some of it every month. Perhaps this month's "me time" had started a little too early, due to the fact that it was just the second day of August.
Her steps in the Hogwarts Campgrounds were slow and soft, with the intention of wasting time and maybe finding a Niffler lurking around somewhere. What did she even know about them? Lia had definitely seen one or two pictures of the creatures, but no way she could remember what they looked like. Maybe darker fur with the color... brown? grey? black? Some dark color in that direction, probably. More than that, she didn't know. Her thoughts wandered back to Muggle technology. If she were at home and wanted to see what an animal looked like, she would've just surfed the internet and looked at the images or descriptions. But now, on one hand, Muggle technology didn't work in the wizarding territory, and on the other, she was sure that she couldn't find an inkling of information about what a Niffler, a magical creature, looked like on Muggle websites. Surely no Muggle would think of such creatures. Dragons and Griffins? Maybe. But not Nifflers. Muggles tended to be a bit dramatic and creative with "inventing" magical beings.
Nevertheless, now she had to improvise. With no actual knowledge about the disappeared beast, she was in doubt about ever finding it. That was until she heard a bush move. "A little too easy," she muttered under her breath and walked over to the bush. "Hey, Mr. Niffler. I think you should go back to where you belong-!" While talking, she walked around the bush to catch the...... nothing. From next to it, she saw the small figure of a rabbit disappear into the Forbidden Forest. Fine, then. Not a Niffler. She definitely didn't sound crazy talking to a bush as the rabbit fled.
"Ugh." The raven threw herself on the grass on her back like a starfish, staring at the sky. It was becoming some crazy day, finding Nifflers seemed to be an impossible task. They were either too good at hiding, or too good at fleeing before a human eye caught their movement.

Ophelia felt movement near her jeans' pocket and stood up as fast as she could. Searching for the white keychain she'd gotten from her mother in July, which was in her pocket. From her peripheral vision, she saw a tiny creature with dark fur running away, and in it's mouth- "Oh, that little-!" She ran after the beast. She hated losing stuff, it was a thing she often did as a kid. Never special things, more like pens and pencils when she was at school. But that keychain was something she'd adored, and it was gifted to her by her mother. Ophelia did not want to lose it. Running after that fast creature was not in her summer bucket list, but some things have to be done in order to get other things. "Why is it so fast?" She muttered and turned, finally cornering the fast little beast between two enclosures meant for other magical creatures. Ophelia had been so invested in getting the shiny keychain and, sadly not getting to, but, tackling the Niffler, that she didn't look at the direction she was running to. "At least you'll be where you belong in no time." Lia walked closer and closer to the Niffler, making its space to run for hiding smaller and smaller, and trapping it by the wall. She crouched down, picking the Niffler up like a puppy, and taking the keychain out of it's mouth immediately before the creature died by swallowing it. "This is not food."
She let the Niffler loose in the enclosure and sat in front of it, dangling the keychain in front of her own face. The Niffler could see it, if it was looking at her. She then put the keychain back in her pocket and stared at the creature. "You're cute. But you shouldn't be running aorund stealing things that aren't yours." The Niffler tilted its head, and then started walking around in the encloser. Perhaps she should go visit a doctor, talking to bushes and Nifflers is probably not a healthy behaviour for an eleven-year-old, or any human being. Unless they could speak to animals. Parseltongue people could technically speak to snakes, so could witches and wizards maybe develop a way to talk to other animals? They probably wouldn't be called crazy if they could. To her knowledge, they couldn't do so for now. That meant she was temporarily a little crazy in the head.
