Jealousy was an ugly emotion, Leonard knew.

He was not jealous, if it were to be described. He was more, slighted. While it would be vain to walk around pompously while declaring of his advanced intellectual abilities, he knew his worth. He knew he was better off not doing whatever it was his lizard brain was going to make him do, but it felt almost compulsive to approach the girl and piss her off, for several reasons. Most were unreasonable.

First off, he needed another rival. His last attempt to make one had ended in the lesson that some Gryffindors actually believed that they were superior only due to house, and becoming a catalyst in a destroyed friendship between idiotic purebloods was not an experience he would’ve liked to repeat. There was something that just felt right about a nice rivalry. Competition always brought out another side of him, the side he liked much more than the one he showed when making acquaintances.

Second off, he just wanted to talk to someone to put off actually studying. Even if he were a mind in a millennia, he’d probably be too lazy to do anything with it.

Third off, he needed to get back at Ravenclaw. Leonard’s grudges went past the point of reason, farther than planets undiscovered. Once Verdine had broken his trust by siding with that cowardly pig Simmons, the entire house would feel his wrath. With a few exceptions, of course.

He approached the girl, hair the colour of sand and skin to match it. The chatty type, if the previous observations said anything.

“Hello, there. I don’t believe we’ve met before. My name’s Leonard. Would you like to play a game?”

Rose had gone to the courtyard to take a quick break, and to be alone. All the hallways were filled with busy, bustling students, and it was overwhelming, especially for someone who lived in a modest little town her entire life. So, when she stumbled on the courtyard and saw that there were relatively fewer students there, she picked a spot and spent her time reading and doing assignments.

No one had approached her, and she other people, so when a boy with brown hair approached her, asking a rather... strange question, she didn't know how to react. She remembered vaguely seeing this boy in a few of her classes, but she mostly kept to herself and as a result never really got to know him or her other classmates.

Mixed in a flurry of confusion and embarrassment, she stood up and instinctively shut her book.
"U-Um... hi, Leonard. I-I'm Rose. What g-game were you thinking about?
Her face heated up and she played with a loose string on her shirt. Why had she assumed that Leonard was talking to her? There were a few other people in the yard, and she just stood up and started talking. She truly had no experience with this thing called speaking, did she? It was bad enough that being shy was an understatement for her, but she couldn't even speak to other people normally. How could she expect to find a job or attend interviews in her later years? Rose prayed that she would've shed her shyness by then. It was a huge problem that made many obstacles appear that weren't necessary.

She just hoped that the boy wouldn't think of her as badly as she did herself.

He was once again asking himself what it was, exactly, that made him intimidating. Unless every student at Hogwarts was as inept at being civilised as he was (a possibility, strangely enough), then there was something about him that apparently was frightening, threatening. While this would help in his earlier plans, plans that now seemed much more achievable than being friendly, plans that were to overtake the entire world and rebuild it using an adjusted version of positivism, it would not help as an eleven-year-old boy that wanted to play checkers with someone.

No matter. His subconscious, though the term was a bit inaccurate if Freud was correct, could take notes. Stuttering happened much, which most likely was to stem from psychogenic, though that term was also a bit inaccurate. After all, meeting him was not a traumatic event. He was fairly sure of that. Well, not really.

It was a weird thing, really. When meeting others that seemed confident, he was reduced to a tortoise that needed to be coaxed by its mother to get out of its shell. When meeting others that were around the same general level of awkwardness, it was a fine conversation, usually not ending in the other party crying. When meeting others that were like this girl, he was the one that was confident. A frightening thought, indeed.

“Don’t know, really. Thought I could give you visitor’s advantage, like in basketball. Is that a thing? Wait, do you know what basketball is?” He needed the girl to underestimate him, which would make the defeat all the more compelling for a next round. Also, he didn’t know basketball terms at all. “No matter. I’ve got a pack of cards and some dice, so your choice. The muggle kind. Don’t want to start a bushfire.”
