A new beginning

First day of school
September 2017
A boy stumbled off the petrel, knees shaking, hair a windswept mess. He took a few seconds to himself, mind racing in a deep fog that he was not normally acquainted with. Usually, he very clearly knew and understood whatever he was thinking, but there was now a loud buzz in his ears such that words nor coherent thoughts could form in his mind at all.
He had imagined flying to Mahoutokoro a thousand times, ever since he had demonstrated his first instance of magic, when his curiosity had gotten the better of him while he stood out of his father's forbidden study. But, it had never occurred to him that the long flight and finally arriving at Mahoutokoro would feel as nauseating as this. With each swell of the winds, his stomach lurched. He was glad that he did not have to share a ride with anyone else as he shut his eyes and clamped his mouth shut, clinging for dear life while trying to think of anything else other than the height at which he was soaring. He should have known that flying on a petrel would be just as disagreeable to him as his first broom lesson.
Other giant birds landed next to his, and he felt the whoosh of their wings and feathers bat him with wind. Oh no.... was he going to get sick again?
He dearly wished that no one felt friendly or excited enough to approach him. The last thing he needed was an annoying child he didn't know, trying to befriend him while he was too busy keeping what remained of his breakfast from rising to his throat.
How pathetic he must seem right now. Not at all like the heir to a thriving real estate business.
A wave of cold sweat hit him, and he crouched to kneel on one knee as if adjusting his shoe and sock. But of course, this was only so no one could see how sick he looked, nor would they think to rudely approach him if some bored loser out there decided they wanted to make a new friend.

Akane then pondered what would greet her at the coveted Japanese magic institution. She felt a pang of nervousness; she had only gotten her first instance not too many months ago. Surely some of her peers would have been in touch with theirs even earlier, and would thus be superior to her. Akane tightened her grip on the petrel's feathers. She could not stand being inferior, and would not let her inexperience show. She would put on the display of a gifted Shimizu heir.
The wind blew her hair around, much to her annoyance, thus for most of the distance, she was was busy attempting to tame her locks, batting at it and simultaneously trying not to take a great fall into the water below. Once she saw the imposing volcanic island of Mount Iwo Jima on the horizon, she ceded her hair to the elements and stared straight ahead towards what she would call her school for the rest of her life.
Her petrel touched down gracefully, which Akane appreciated. She felt slightly bad for hanging onto the magnificent beast so much over the duration of her trip. As she climbed down, the kid imagined it likely regarded her as a lowly creature, incapable of flight. She wobbled a bit, adjusting to the feeling of solid ground beneath her feet, and righted herself, now staring up at the school building. In a sort of tranced hurry, she began to walk in a brisk pace, catching up to the front of the horde of kids. It was only when Akane was already in the air at a 45º angle that she realized she had tripped over something- evidently someone's shoe or something of that sort. Her face flushed, and she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Obviously an incident of this type would happen to her.
"My apologies," she expressed, bowing slightly as she had been taught. She stood up again. I hope you're alright." In front of her was a boy- strangely familiar. "Akira-san?

A new beginning

He was swallowing, taming his breathing and his nerves as he crouched, lips pressed together, looking as if he were staring at his shoe in deep concentration. Breathe in... breathe out... Until all of a sudden, someone walked over him and stumbled.
Why now, of all the minutes in his life? The briefest hint of a scowl etched itself onto his face before he consciously schooled his features and veiled his irritation at having to meet a classmate for the very first time, while nauseous.
"My apologies," the girl said politely with a bow. "I hope you're alright." He would appreciate her for her manners, if not anything else. "Akira-san?" the girl asked as she peered at him, and he stiffened at the sound of his name, before he glanced up to see it was someone he recognized very well, to his partial relief. Akira quickly stood, and then swallowed; just the small change in height made him a bit dizzy, but he blinked it away.
"I'm fine," he stated, even if the extra paleness of his complexion hinted otherwise. "I was only adjusting my shoe," he explained, hoping it would suffice, while giving his second cousin a quick scan to make sure she was alright from the brief stumble. "Good morning, Akane-san. I hope you're doing well today?" He greeted her, hoping to refocus his mind on the present and on etiquette, rather than the lurching feeling in his stomach.
That question was halfway out of his mouth before he realized that he didn't want to talk about flying on petrels, which was probably the most eventful task of her morning and the next topic of their conversation -- if she were to answer his question how he expected.

Akane slightly nodded at her second cousin's excuse, struck with the sense that there was something more, but she didn't push further. "Yes, I'm doing well, thanks for asking," she replied, smiling. While the girl did not mind having to meet new people, it was a relief to know that there was at least one person she knew well in her new surroundings. Seeing as they were both on their feet now, she began to walk, following the flow of students toward the castle.
"Though, the flight here was... not the most pleasant," she conceded, thinking of how she felt the elements ceaselessly buffeting her face, wind and water and all. "I'm sure the petrels are very nice, but the commute would be more enjoyable if, say, there was some sort of shelter from the elements. A carriage of sorts." The first thought that came to mind were the logistics attached to her proposition- she was very inclined to take into account these things. Where would they find enough carriages for so many students? And would the magnificent beasts cope well with such a hinderance to their motion? Then it was also likely they would need to be enchanted with some sort of spell to lighten up the load, if such a spell even existed. She could simply not wait to start learning magic.

A new beginning

He tried not to blink while he said he was fine, but knowing how perceptive Akane was, he had the feeling that she would see right through his denial. There were simply too many instances when she had seen him deny being hungry, upset, hot, cold, or tired, that he was quite sure she could sense any unease within him.
Naturally, he was grateful that she didn't fuss over his unsavory state as if he were a young child. It reminded him why he appreciated the company of his second cousin. In his experience, few other children had the same tact and understanding that Akane possessed. His step easily fell in line with hers as they walked towards the entrance, bringing with it a feeling of calm, familiarity, and reassurance, even if he would never admit it out loud. His breathing evened.
His eyes narrowed habitually in thought as he considered Akane's proposition, relieved that she had given him a logistical solution to distract him from his nausea, which had thankfully begun to wane. "I didn't care much for the flight, either," he said, nonchalantly, hopefully not with too much resolve or passion for the subject. "A carriage would certainly be more practical, especially in the rain." Not to mention the fact that it would helpfully block his view from how much distance there was between him and the ground below.
However, surely, generations upon generations of students have tolerated the flight every day. Who was he to complain about flying on a petrel, rain or shine? He ought to be grateful that he was gifted an early first instance of magic. "Although, I'd have to say that the petrels themselves are perfectly adequate." This was a statement made with much conviction, as if he were telling this to remind himself, to urge his words to become true in his own mind. "...Once one becomes accustomed to them," he added quietly.
He shook the self-pity out of his mind, and straightened his robe. "If Mahoutokoro has used petrels they way they have, for generations, there must be a reason for this. It would be presumptuous for us to decide that the system is less effective just because we find it uncomfortable."

"I'd think they'll teach us about petrels, and other creatures, right?" she asked thoughtfully, and glanced at the work of architecture that loomed ahead. Something about the sheer size of the building sparked a sudden fear in Akane. What if she wasn't good enough? Keep talking, she thought, blinking and shaking her head. "As well as the school's history, of course, I'm excited for it, really..." she trailed off, thinking about all the things they would dump in her brain once she was a student. To some degree, at some small crevice of her conscience, she was very scared. However smart a child she was, however, emotions were not her strong suit. For all she knew, though, she was wholly determined to prove that she could be more than competent.

A new beginning

By now, as his steps fell into rhythm with Akane's on the grass, he was starting to feel much more like himself. His life and his emotions were more in check and under his own control -- just how he preferred it. Gone was the feeling of his fate in another creature's wings, and being subjected to the elements of the sky. As for the daily commute, he was sure he would be able to handle it, eventually. He had to. What could possibly stump him? He was the golden heir of the Shimizu real estate company! And he would not disappoint. All the other children will bow down to him, surely, once they knew who he was and what he could do.
"You're right, I'm sure they'll teach us how to ...deal... with the petrels. Among other hazards." He followed Akane's gaze to the towers above, blinking for the first time in wonder at the mythical school he had only heard about. It made him feel small, yet he could also feel the structures emanating magnificence. A magnificence that will one day imbue him with a life of opportunity, knowledge, and power.
He peered at his second cousin and the way her voice trailed. She seemed a little less excited than he might have expected her to be, though he couldn't be sure, since she (like him), was not the type of child to be expelling her lungs often, or if at all. Was she worried about something? "I'm most excited to learn how to duel," he said, carrying on their conversation about exciting things, hoping it was encouraging. "Not that we'd be allowed to as 7-year-olds, surely, but we will get there one day. Can you imagine, being able to blast your opponent off the piste?" His allowed himself a quirk of the lips as the excitement and anticipation escaped him. No one would be able to look down on him or Akane if they could accomplish that.
"Perhaps I would request your help in our history lessons," he said, attempting to imbue his tone with an off-handed manner, so it didn't seem like he required it. "Because, I think you've always been able to understand history very well," he explained, remembering some of the tutoring lessons they've shared. Maybe his cousin just needed a gentle reminder of what she could do.
